My Mac keeps losing it's internet connection

My iMac regularly loses internet connection. Every few minutes a window pops up saying that safari cannot access a site as the computer is not connected to the internet. If I then do nothing, connection is restored after about ten seconds and the site in question loads normally. Alternatively, I can refresh the page and it normally loads normally. I installed Snow Leopard a couple of months ago and it was around this time that the problem started. I wondered if my broadband connection might be faulty although I also have an Ipad and this has not ben affected. Anybody have any ideas about fixing this?
Thanks.

Welcome, Footman, to the Apple Discussions.
What model iMac do you have? A couple of posters have been on recently with problems some what like yours, turned out to be a problem with the AirPort card or antenna inside the iMac.
Without dwelling on that, you might try logging into the router admin account and check to see if there are any firmware updates. If so, do a force update. You may then be asked to reset the admin account password as it gets deleted on some routers when they update the firmware.
Next, power cycle the router, completely off for a minute or so then back on.
On the iMac, delete the wireless account and then reinstall the information.
By the way, where is the iMac located relative to the router? Have there been any other changes around the time this started, such as new microwave oven, other wireless devices? Some people have the wireless utility meters in the US which are on the same band as WiFi and can cause interference.
This is strange because over on the iPad group people complain about lack of connectivity with their iPads while their Macs, PCs, etc., all connect without issue.

If you get a network timeout error, then disabling the computer's security software duirng the download and update usually resovles that error.
If that is not the error what is the wording of the error message.
Note that only a 3G or 4G iPod can go to iOS 5.  A 2G iPod can only go to iOS 4.2.1

  • TS1398 My week old ipad2 keeps loosing it's internet connection, even though it is still connected to my home wi-fi network. The ipad has to be rebooted to make it work, which it does for awhile, then looses connection again. Resetting the connection does

My week old ipad2 keeps dropping it's internet connection, even after rebooting the ipad and renewing the wi-fi connection. Gets very frustrating not to have internet in the middle of a task or email.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • My 2007 mac pro has a slow internet connection with lion

    Hi:
I've been dealing with a severely slow internet connection with my 2007 mac pro - dual quad core.  I have os 10.7.3.  I use wifi.
Typically, I'll experience difficulty loading websites completely.  Certain sites have a 90% failure rate to load most elements.  Other sites operate quickly from time to time.  Often, a site will simply fail to load at all.  My cable company cannot find anything wrong with my connection and other, newer devices don't have a problem loading sites.  It seems the issue is most likely related to my computer.
Interestingly, I can usually "jump-start" the connection by turning my wifi connection off and on and this will (temporarily) allow me to get an image or video to download.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you for your time.

  • How to transfer notes between your mac and Ipad without an internet connection?

Let's say you write a note on your Ipad. Then you want to use this very note on your macbook (mountain lion) but unfortunately you have no internet connection available at this moment.
Normally, you could just plug in the Ipad using a USB cable and sync Notes via Itunes. However, I've read that this is now impossible because you can only sync Notes via Icloud (requiring an internet connection).
So you really can't sync note if you have no internet?
Is there some note-taking app that could sync via USB?
If not, how can I simply transfer text files from the Ipad to my macbook via USB?
    Thanks you

Yes, you should be able to buy/download apps from the iTunes app store on your Mac and then sync them to the iPad - neither the iPad nor the Mac should need to be connected to the internet to sync the apps over to the iPad
If the iPad hasn't been synced to that computer before then you may find this page useful : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141

  • Local mac-to-mac transfers goes through the internet connection (very slow)

Transfering files from my iMac to my MacBook Air (or the opposite way) over my local Time Capsule wireless network is extremely slow. I connect to my MacBook Air using my local username account on that machine (which is the same as on the iMac). When I click on the connected MacBook Air again (under shared in Finder’s left column) it says I'm connected as [email protected] (my MobileMe address). Transfers then goes with around 50KB/s which is the same as my outbound capacity on my internet connection. If I disconnect the internet from the Time Capsule I get transfers around 2.2MB/s.
I can’t actually log in as a local user on my other local machine. It goes through the internet no matter how I log in. Back To My Mac is even turned off on both machine.
    How can I fix this?

You actually are close enough to their 3meg down that you can't complain. 2.8meg down and 700kb up is fine, unless it's supposed to be their FIOS that is.
Sounds like it is the site(s) that are slow, like these boards at times.

  • Reader updates on Mac state it must have internet connection, but my Safari is up and running fine. What to do?

I have Reader 9.5.5 on Mac OS 10.10.2 and frequently get Adobe update notifications in my dock, accompanied by a warning panel that states an internet connection is necessary, but I have my Safari browser up and running fine. So I can never get the updater beyond this point. This happens periodically and I have written Adobe and never received an answer. Adobe should make the updates a seamless, nearly automatic file, but instead they are still using antiquated software which is confusing (unless you are an IT person) and difficult to troubleshoot. Adobe could do much better.

Your Reader version 9.5.5 is very old and no longer supported.
I suggest that you uninstall it, then install the latest version using the offline installer from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

  • My mac mini won't hold internet connection

Our Mac mini loses the internet connection from any source and we can't stay online.
    Anyone have any troubleshooting ideas?

Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.

  • Why does my iPhone not show up in iTunes on a mac that has a shared internet connection from another mac?

I have what I would consider a difficult question. I called Apple Care and after she spoke to a senior advisor, the representative ended up saying it wasn't possible.
Having said that, I'm sure this is not a difficult question for people with networking expertise.
    Setup
So...I have a MacBook receiving a WiFi signal via AirPort.
In System Preferences, I have turned on Internet sharing (share airport over Ethernet).
I connected the Ethernet port on my MacBook to the Ethernet port on my MDD PowerMac G4.
At this point, I can successfully browse the web, perform software updates, and view other computers and iTunes libraries on my network from my G4.
    Goal
However, in iTunes on my G4 I would like to use iTunes DJ.
    Tried
    So...I click on iTunes DJ.
I set the settings (button in bottom right) to allow guest remotes, etc.
I turned on iTunes Home Sharing (logged into the same account as by iPhone).
    Problem
However, from the Remote app on my iPhone, I am unable to see the library on my G4.
Also, if I want to pair my iPhone Remote app with iTunes on my G4, I click add Library in the Remote app, but iTunes on the G4 never displays my iPhone in the left column (although I am able to see all other iTunes libraries being shared on the network).
Thus, I cannot connect to iTunes as a guest Remote, nor can I connect as paired remote.
I have successfully done both of these things with computers connected directly to my modem, as well as with computers connected via WiFi.
The problem is connecting devices to computers that get their internet connection though another computer via internet sharing.
    Question
So my question is about Internet sharing itself. Is it not a fully featured ad-hoc network? Does it only provide browsing capabilities and the ability to browse networked computers, but NOT devices such as an iPhone? I don't see the difference; my iPhone is on the same network as the computers, so why is there no communication between it and computers that gain their Internet connection through another computer?
I really hope someone out there who is an expert in networking can help me out with this. Or if it truly is impossible, if someone could explain to me why that is the case, I would also appreciate it.
ps. I usually have my MacBook sharing its Internet connection through an old router that I am using as a switch because I share the connection with three other computers. And if it isn't obvious, the modem is downstairs, and the MacBook, old router being used as a switch, and other computers are upstairs where there is no Ethernet wired.
Thank you in advance for any help.

  • My mac won't maintain an internet connection

My internet connection gets "hung up" and won't connet, in spite of a perfect connection.  All software is up to date.  Happens with Safari and Firefox.  HELP

    Open System Preferences > Network
Select the connection on the left then click Assist Me then click: Diagnostics
If any of the buttons on the left are red click Continue.
That should give you an idea of whether it's Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or your ISP preventing your browsers from loading pages.

  • Downloading large programs on Mac App Store kills my internet connection.

Most downloads work fine, but larger ones won't even start downloading.  I have to manually reset my DSL modem to get my internet connection back.  Seems to only happen with files that are > 1GB in size (Lion, Knights of the Old Republic).  If I connect to an external VPN the download works fine, but trying to directly download kills the modem.
Don't know why it only does this with larger files.  Is it making multiple connections that might be overwhelming my modem?  Anything I can do to troubleshoot or fix this - no error messages come up (just a dead connection), and I can see no logs to try to track down the issue.
Thanks for any advice you can give me.

I have had the same exact problem with the same exact app (Knights of the Old Republic) I have been having issues with every download from the App store. Sometimes the downloads will freeze other times (like now) it will kill my internet all together. I dont get why I can download anything fine through chrome or steam but the App store just will not work at my house. The only reason I am using it is because I have a gift card but honestly the service is so inconsinstant that I would rather not use it at all. If your still having issues (even though its been a few months) I would suggest trying a different Internet connection. When I went to an apple store to see if they could help I just used their internet and the download worked fine.

  • HP Web Services keeps returning a no internet connection error. HP1025nw

I am trying to setup the eprint service to work on my printer.  When I try to enable web-service on my printer, it returns an error message saying, there is no internet connection.
I have updated the firmware as specified thru eprnt support, and still the same error.

    Hi @wokst2,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I see that you are getting a connection error message when trying to enable the web services on your Laserjet CP1025nw printer.
Please set a static IP and manual DNS servers for the printer. The steps can be found in the Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection document. For the DNS servers please use 8.8.8.8 for the Manual DNS Sever and 8.8.4.4 for the Alternate Preferred DNS Server. These are Google’s DNS servers.
Please let me know how it goes.

  • Mac keeps losing internet connnection

I'm running a mid 2010 21.5 inch iMac, on the latest version of Mavericks. For a couple months now I have been having this problem where I am suddenly unable to connect to the internet on my Mac. This occurs across all users, but only on this machine- other devices on the WiFi network can connect. Connecting to the router via WiFi instead of ethernet makes no difference. A restart is the only way to fix the problem. It occurs randomly, sometimes going a couple of days without but sometimes multiple times in the same day. Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
