My mac keeps shutting down by itself

My mac keeps shutting down by itself. Seems to be when I'm trying to edit video on FCPX or when kids are playing a game. Its an older 2009 20" imac 2.66 Ghz Intel core Core 2 Duo running OS X 10.9.4
How can I stop this please? Thanks

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

    I believe -122 is a power issue...
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange problems...

  • Why my 2009 desktop with OS Maverick keep shutting down by itself

Why my 2009 desktop using OS Maverick keep shutting down by itself?

When it shuts down, the screen blanks (more like turns grey, like the color of the background when on the log in screen). It reboots immediately, so at first the problem was presumed to be restarting, not shutting down and powering back on. The computer is usually very warm, and definitely gets hot easily. A test was run determine when the fan would turn on to start cooling the computer by running digits of Pi, and the tester concluded it was too close within the safe temperatures before it would permanently affect the computer. (I believe this was within 5ºF, but I am not 100% sure.) The times when it will turn off and reboot do not seem coorelated with much if anything. It has done this at multiple times, among running varying amounts of programs and for different lengths of time: right after logging into the user, within a minute of after it has turned off and rebooted, within 5 minutes, 10, 30, even 60 minutes of turning off and rebooting, when only running one program such as Firefox, when running various programs such as Firefox, iTunes, Microsoft Word, Sticky Notes....
    Basically, it makes no sense.

  • Mac keeps shutting down

    Hi,
this is a bit of an awkward problem – not sure if someone can help me out.
I work on a MacPro (early 2008) but have updated it with two hard drives (SSD) and 24 GB RAM. So it works pretty well.
The computer is connected to a battery back up because we have lot's of brown outs in my area. My computer battery got fried 2 years ago (after a black out) and I think I have a third party battery now in the machine.
Everything has been working fine these last two years but now my Mac keeps shutting down and tries to start up again without success. I tried to find the problem and tested a new external battery back up, which wasn't the problem. I check our electrical outlets. They seem to be OK, though the electrician found out that they weren't wired properly – so he fixed it. And it works fine for a week. During that week I unplugged the computer from the outlet so that the internal battery can drain. When I stopped doing that and left the cable in the machine over night, the problems came back and the Mac kept shutting down. So my guess was, that there is something wrong with the internal battery of the computer. The strange thing is that the Mac works fine when I plug it with an extension cord in an outlet downstairs. This is confusion since there might be really an electrical issue in our home (?)
Then two days ago I realized that my memory RAM shows up only 12 GB instead of 24 GB. So I took the RAM out, dusted everything and put the RAM back in. The Mac was back at 24 GB.
So far the Mac hasn't tried to shut down on it's own. The cable is plugged in in my office outlet; not the ones which worked fine downstairs but I unplug it over night; just in case. As you can see, there is a lot of confusion in finding the problem. Perhaps the shut downs were related to the RAM? I'm just concerned that the problems come back.
Has anyone a clue what the problem is/was. Has anyone experienced something like this before?
    Thanks for you input.

I assume that you realize there are cheaper and now better FBDIMMs should you need to narrow down and find any that are offending?
Often heat and dust, and FBDIMMs run hot, age, go bad over course of time. New ones run cooler, that helps.
That you have now probably a 900W or higher, 1500VA UPS, and that you should not have to turn off, leave it on, shutdown or leave the Mac running, up to you.
Resetting the SMC and NVRAM probably done more than enough. USB devices are also able to cause erratic behavior. Been there and done that.
We also have a fair share of power oddities and UPS is a must - all my TVs and such have one, any electronics and floor lamps.
But you also want your modem, router, and important equipment on UPS too, and I found my old APC would interfere with modems and routers, my new-ish Cyberpower do not and work fine so I feel more protected (having had a modem problem is no fun, it was semi functional, semi not (illiterate) if you will (now have spare modem and router too). If you don't filter the RJ45 out of the modem, there can even be too much for the router or the RJ45 ports is what APC told me in a conversation years ago.
3,1 has been more prone to shutdown issues. So yes there are - some early versions of 10.8 for some, for others it was that they upgraded from 10.5 on and had never made a clean break esp. when Lion dropped support for older Rosetta dependent code.

    Hello People,
I need help, Yesterday i booted up my iphone and it crashes like each 5 minutes,

So i put it in the computer and updated my os to 4.3.5 (if thats the latest (not 5)).
But now when i plug it into the computer it goes on and off byitself.

How can i fix this or what could be the problem?
    Kind Regards,

iPhone shutting OFF by itself is most often due to faulty battery. You have already done a Restore. Make Genius reservation and take iPhone to Apple Store for quick free battery dianostic testing to confim that it is a battery problem.

  • My Mac keeps shutting down.

    Hi there,
Can anyone tell me why my iMac G5 (not intel) seems to suddenly and randomly shut itself down and reboot. I suspected it might be a CPU temperature issue but It does this even when no programmes are running. It did this about 6 months ago but then seemed to work fine again.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Julian, UK

    Hi Julian,
Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test.
    Then get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Mac keep shutting down after cancelling Snow Leopard upgrade DVD

    Hello,
I tried to upgrade my computer with the Mac OS X Snow Leopard DVD. The upgrade failed twice, so I decided to quit it and to restart my computer with hardware, but then, it doesn't run more than 35 sec and then shuts down automatically. I have tried 5 times to restart it, but it shuts down even before I can see my desktop. Ho yes, and I ejected the DVD from it.
    ...help please! : )
    Thank you!

Sounds like you've damaged your system by forcing it to quit and restart in the middle of installing. You probably also had something wrong with your machine that was interfering with the installation in the first place, as the Snow Leopard installer is ordinarily pretty good at failing without damaging anything if something causes it to fail.
I would advise [repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417]. If that fails, you'll need to erase and repartition the hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard from scratch. If repair works, but you still can't boot, you probably have corruption in important system files. You could try installing Snow Leopard over it at this point, while booted from the Snow Leopard disk. If repair shows no problems, post back here, as you've got something a little more exotic than simple hard disk damage going on.
Do you have a backup? If not, it's possible all your data might be gone at this point, depending on what exactly has gone wrong with your computer. You can try to back up from Disk Utility running from the Mac OS X install disk... see the Restore tab. You'll need an external hard drive to which to copy.

  • The connection of my MAC keeps shutting down!

I have a problem with my connection. It keeps shuting down almost every 15 minutes (technically not connected) but it's still somehow connected. I've checked for the diagnosis and it appeared that ISP, Internet, and Server are failed. If I turn off-then-on the wi-fi of it returns. AND SO ON..
Can I deal with such a problem from here (If yes how?) OR should i take the device to the company ?
    please help,
    Thanks

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Disconnect all USB 3 devices. If you don't know which are USB 3, disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. If you find that Wi-Fi works better with Bluetooth disabled, you should use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. Your router may not support it; in that case, you need a new router.
    Step 4
Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • Done everything, yet my Mac keeps shutting down when in sleep mode

I have reviewed all the topics here and nothing quite matches my problem.
When I put my computer to sleep, after about 30 minutes, it shuts down.
    I have vacuumed the vents.
I checked Console for warnings (there are none).
    I reset the SMU.
    I reset the PRAM.
It is out of its warranty with Apple Care ... is my computer dying??
Any ideas what to do next?

My 3.5 year old 20” G5 iMac recently started doing the exact same thing! It does not seem to be heat related, and there are no warnings in the console either, and it was not part of the ones identified with possible power supply issues.
I’ve checked all of the preferences and settings, ran Disk Warrior and Disk Utilities, checked file permissions (all were OK). Mine only seems to power down after it goes to sleep (but not every time), never in the middle of doing anything. So far, I’ve only noticed it when some of my external fire wire drives are powered up, but that could be a coincidence.
I was beginning to think it’s some sort of software bug, but I suppose it could be a hardware fault with the logic board. But since you are having the same issue, maybe it is software afterall. My software is totally up to date, but it seems that I’ve only started having this problem after installing 10.5.6.

  • My mac keeps shutting down without warning

Can anyone help. My imac will suddenly turn itself off, this happens when I am not online and I can start it again immediately.

What model iMac do you have?  G3, G4, G5, Intel-based?  How old is it?  What OS are you running, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, 10.6, etc.
It sounds like your power supply is going bad.  Here's a link to an old discussion with a similar sounding problem:

This may or may not be a repair that you can do yoourself, depending on you iMac model.  I've never had to do this repair so I can't help you out that way.
    Good luck.
