My mac mail will not search mail anymore and doesn't load attachments anymore

Does anyone know why this would be happening?
My mac mail will not search mail anymore and doesn't load attachments most of the time.  When I enter some text in the search box no results come up and I know there are messages that contain the phrase that I've entered.
Also about 3 weeks ago attachments only get loaded about 1/4 of the way - if that.  So I have to log onto my web based mail program from the host and retrieve attachements or check the messgae with my iphone.
Please - does anyone know how to fix this?

I figureed out that spotlight was turned off via terminal -  I shut it off to unmount a disk (which didn't work anyways)
sudo mdutil -a -i on
that's the termianl command to turn spotlight back on.  As far as my attachments not fully loading in mac mail on my iMac that still baffles me.

The amount of RAM is not dependant on the operating system. It is all about the model of you Mac.
10.6.8 is the version of OS X that is installed on your system. It has no real baring on the amount of RAM that CAN be installed.
Personally I have never had good luck with Corsair RAM. I have always had good luck with Crucial and Kingston.

  • Mail will not send mail, only receive.

I have spent the majority of today re-installing OS X and all necessary updates, music, data after the death of a hard drive. Luckily everything went perfectly, except for the same problem I had with Mail even before the 1st hard drive died. Mail will not send mail, only receive.
All efforts time out and give me this message: "The connection to the server mail.earthlink.net on port 25 timed out"
Mail used to send messages, but stopped suddenly in 2004 and has yet to start again. Any idea guys?! I can't figure it out, under Account settings I have necessary fields filled in: Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) is set to "mail.earthlink.net", Server Port is set to 25, and Authentication drop menu is set to None.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    --DANIEL

This is NOT a problem with Mail or OS X. This is an incorrect settings problem - garbage in = garbage out and this information is certainly available at Earthlink's website and Earthlink also provides technical support.
Earthlink has an authenticated SMTP server they changed to long ago.
    SMTP Server: smtpauth.earthlink.net
Server Port: 587 but 25 should work if you are using Earthlink as your internet service provider for connecting to the internet.
Use SSL: Off or not selected.
    Authentication: MD5 Challenge-Response
User Name: Your ENTIRE Earthlink email address.
Password: The account's password - the same password used to check the incoming mail server for new messages.

  • My mail will not receive mail

My mail will not receive mail. It seems the last mail I had was 24th Dec but I have got the mail on my ipad and iphone ok. If I connect via safari I can get mail ok. I tried deleting old mail, no change.

    Not so fast ;-)
How many email accounts are you using with Mail.app?
In the left-hand panel of the Mail window, under "Mailboxes", you can see (beneath other things) the inbox(es) of your account(s). Is there some sort of sign/logo displayed to the right of their names? Is it possibel that you have taken it/them offline by accident?

  • Mail will not search in the "on my mac" folder

    Hi everyone,
I've been trying to come up with a useful solution to essentially archive messages from an email account that is no longer active. I would like to keep these messages searchable in Mail though. I thought if I put them in the "On My Mac" Saved Mail Folder, they would remain searchable, however it appears Mail is not searching this mailbox. Is it just me? It seems like the functionality exists. For example if I select the saved mail on my mac folder and then attempt to search for a message in that folder I have the option of searching All, Saved Mail on My Mac, Inbox etc. but no results from the mailbox appear in the search. Is there any way to change this so I am able to search messages in this folder? Thanks!

Hey thanks for the reply. My problem was solved by rebuilding the "on my mac" mailbox. Previously I was searching based on the title of an email that I knew was in the folder so I knew there was either a problem with my mail searching feature or it wasn't possible to search that folder.

  • One account in .Mac mail will not receive mail?

I've tried sending to my other .Mac accounts and this is normal. My primary .Mac mail account will not receive mail. My E-Bay mail and other mail is not reaching this one primary account. Any suggestions?
867 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   My primary account is storing 1412 mail messages

The .Mac servers for your area may be having problems this morning.
I'm using Mail 2.0.5 but checking the .mac server
directly takes mail out of the loop.
Not true. For a .Mac type account, it will mark a message as read only in the Mail.app when the mailbox is synchronized with the server after messages are checked and read at the server using webmail access and if changed to a POP type account in Mail, any message that is available at the server will be downloaded by the Mail.app even after messages are read using webmail access.
    Is mail storage calculated separately?
It is now. You can adjust - lower or raise the amount of server storage space alloted for the account.

  • Mail will not open from dock and wont allow me to shut down, Help?

My mail will not open from the dock and if I try and close my computer it is prevented by the application mail being open.  Help please.

You can try to Force Quit the Mail application by using the keys OPTION COMMAND ESC, from the window that pops up select Mail and clcik force quit.
Have you tried launching Mail from your Applications folder? It launches properly, drag the icon off the dock, it should vanish in a puff of smoke, you can then go to the Applcations folder and drag the Mail icon back to the dock to create a new shortcut.

  • Mac Mail will not compose mail or respond to mail without restarting Mail app

After using Mac Mail for a few messages, sometimes only ONE, it will not respond to received mail, either by clicking the RESPOND icon nor using menu choices under "Message".  Nor will it respond to Compose New mail, either by icon access or menu choice.  It WILL respond after RESTARTING Mail, but then only for one or two messages, but then it will no longer respond without restart.
I am using Mac Mail on a MacBook Pro with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 6 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Memory.  I have OS X Yosemite (10.10.2) installed, but this problem began WAAAY over a year ago with previous iOS.

  • Exchange Mail will not Send mail from Iphone when Desktop computer Shutdown

A client of mine has an Iphone that I have setup to connect to his Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server using Activesync. Everything works fine and dandy until he shutdown his desktop in his office. Than he is no longer able to send any mail from his Iphone but is able to receive it no problem. Anyone have any insight on this problem?

Your problem is with Cox and Cox not having an authenticated SMTP server.
Not many ISPs provide an authenticated SMTP server and I'm not sure why - especially with laptops and devices such as the iPhone so popular.
I'm a Time Warner/RoadRunner customer for cable and internet access and I quit using my RR email account several years ago for this very reason. I switched to using my .Mac account as my primary personal email account which has an authenticated SMTP server. I'm able to send messages with the account regardless the internet service provider used for internet access. My business POP account also has an authenticated SMTP server and no problems sending with this account either - via a number of different Wi-Fi connections and EDGE.
I suggest seriously considering switching to another email account. A Gmail account is free, can be accessed as a POP or IMAP account with the email client on your computer as well as with the iPhone's email client, has a good spam filter at the incoming mail server, and has an authenticated SMTP server.
If you ever move or decide to change your ISP from Cox to a different ISP, your email account and address will not need to change. You can access and send messages with a Gmail account with any ISP - the same with a .Mac account. And you'll have much more server storage space than Cox provides.

  • 2013 new Mac Pro will not boot up from and external hard drive

New 2013 MAC PRO running Yosemite will not not see a bootable external hard drive when starting up using option key?  Same External hard drive will boot up on 2013 Mac Book Pro running Yosemite.

Reading between tea leaves sometimes leaves some things to imagination.
You used SuperDuper latest version that was recently upgraded for Yosemite on a laptop running 10.10 (or even 10.9.3+) that is in a X-brand USB3 drive enclosure, not bus powered btw, moved it to the nMP and plugged it into a direct port, not going through a hub (monitors have hubs of course and there is only one real bus+controller on the nMP that ALL USB3 travels through.
Thunderbolt and self-powered would be nice but they cost a bit more.
I have read where Carbon Copy Cloner (now v 4.x) worked where others failed. I use to use both but have used CCC since its inception and use back in 10.2.2 forward along with SD! for a few years based on comments here.
Drivers missing? someone compared system extensions and found the ones needed for say the nMP are not there? how about running a 10.10.1 combo update and see if that changes - we USE to be able to apply updates to a system that we were not booted from, very handy (could update a sparse disk image of a system that way, one created with CCC).
WD Passports seem popular with laptop users, but they come here to this forum complaining that it doesn't work, disappears off the bus (spins down goes to sleep, acts like a green drive acts).

  • Mail will not search

Regardless of what I type in mail search it returns nothing. Its like it is turned off or something. This is a brand new Mac Pro.
I did do a migration from my older computer but it was running the latest OS. Also, it did not suffer from this search problem.
I have seen many many posts about this issue. But very few resolutions expect for a scary command line to enable Searchlight. When I tried to issue this command I was asked for my password and was warned this could cause serious damage to system files! Needless to say I did not proceed.
Is there a fix for this that does not require major surgery?
    Desperate!

Reindexed. Mail still refuses to search....anything. I type in a word I know exists and mail just says this...
or it says nothing and just ignores whatever I type.

  • Mail will not send mail wirelessly: need to plug into ethernet port:

    Hi:
This is weird. While my wife's ibook has a strong signal and can use Safari effortlessly, when she tries to send mail, Mail won't let her. In other words SMTP is the issue because she never has a problem receiving mail the POP server. Since we have several macs on a network, she has recently borrowed my CAT5 cable (removing it from the back of my B&W G3) and when the connection is made to her ibook, the mail is automatically sent. All the other computers have no difficuly receiving or sending mail from Sympatico. I don't think it's the ISP it's the program mail. I have not checked to see if Entourage (part of Office) has the same issue. All I've done was to trash the preferences file and removed the program and reinstalled. No Change. Any ideas? My wife is tired to using my ethernet cable
    Ted

    You’re welcome.
Both of our versions on Mail for our tiger systems is indeed 2.07.
If you’re running Mac OS X 10.4.8, it should be at least 2.1. Have you re-installed Mail? This is a common mistake. If you’ve reinstalled Mail from installation disks with an older version of Mac OS X, you must also reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, to bring Mail back in sync with the rest of the system:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for PPC
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for Intel
You may also want to read the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Mail will not display mail content from aol.

Message has no content. All other mail received is ok. Any ideas?
The aol message sows no content on iPad but when viewed by iPad mail or Safari login to Gmail.  When login to my Gail mail account using win xp &Tbird there is content in the messages.
Have mercy on an old person and help find a solution.
Thank and have a wonderful week.

From one old timer to another ....
Quit the mail app and restart the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit the mail app by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on the mail icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the app. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that fails to solve the issue - try this.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Mail will not send, Mail will not send

Why Can't I send email from my iPad? I previously was ably to do so. First lost the ability to send from one e account and today lost the ability to send mail from a second account.

If it was just one account, I would say to check the outgoing server settings, which you can still do, but the odds of them both going ahywire at the same time seem sort of slim. I t doesn hurt to check however.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.
You can try quitting the mail app completely and reboot the iPad as well. Sometimes that cures mysterious issues.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Server Mail will not delete - tx.rr and Network solutions

I have an iphone 4s.  My first iphone.  I have two email accounts set up.  Both of them are setup to delete from server when delete from inbox.
    They are not working.
I have called apple and the pop 3 providers and neither can help.
I have tx.rr.com - road runner and Network Solutions (company I have a domain name with).
BOTH of these have worked corectly with my last two phones, Blackberry and Samsung Epic.  But neither are working with the iphone.
Is anyone else having this issue or suggestions on what to try.
Of course I want to get apple and road runner on the same call so I don't keep getting sent back an forth to each one.
I REALLY want to be able to delete from the phone as I get so many emails due to my personal business...I want to be able to delete all day long and not have to go home and read/delete again.

Yes, it was definitely within Cyrus. The Apple interfaces are pretty and all but they didn't even get close to helping me solve this easily.
Essentially, what I did was download all the emails from the server (to make sure I didn't miss anything), rename my email folder to something different to preserve the emails in case I really did miss something, then do a recover on the mailbox.
Being a UNIX-head, here's what I did on the server:
    cd /var/spool/imap/user
    mv scott scott.dead
    sudo /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/reconstruct -r user/scott
Sudo, of course, prompted me for the superuser password but everything was fixed right away after that. It is recommended to shut down the mail service from inside the Server Admin program first.
