My Mac (Maverick) no longer recognizes my printer (Canon MX870)

I have a Canon MX760, connected wirelessly to my computer via Linksys ea2700.  I recently disconnected another peripheral from my router, and since then, my computer does not recognize that my printer is not just a scanner.  So I can't print anything.  I've tried deleting all drivers and software and re-downloading it from Canon.  Everything else I could think of (deleting the printer from my printer preferences and re-selecting it, turning everything on and off again).  I'm out of ideas.  Any advice?  I see that alot of folks had trouble getting their Mac to recognize their scanner, but not the printer.

The printer component of the MX870 uses a Canon protocol (canonijnetwork) to advertise itself of the network, while the scanner component uses Bonjour. This canonijnetwork protocol can take several seconds longer to appear compared to the Bonjour protocol. So open Printers & Scanners and click the plus button to add. If you get a small window with a heading of Nearby Printers, click on Add Printer or Scanner. Then from the Default add printer window, you will see the MX870 listed as a Bonjour scanner. If you wait several seconds, the printer should also appear.
If the printer fails to appear after 30 seconds then quit this window and then open Finder and click on Go > Go to Folder. Then type the following
/Library/Printers/Canon
and then press Go. You will now see two folders - BJPrinter and IJScanner. Trash the BJPrinter folder and then download and install the MX870 driver. When the installation has completed, restart your Mac and then see if you can add the printer.

Ok, fair enough.  But since Job's death - Apple's control on leaks has been terrible.  I got the new iPhone, and I like it - but it hasn't made nearly as big as an impression as previous ones.  Because of the vast ammount of leaks.  With the iPad mini leaks, it's 99% sure to come out next week.
Apple uses many manufacturers and it's massive also websites prefer to report on Apple whether true or false because it brings more hits.
Amd by "others" I meant other people on iPads - not other devices/manufacturers.  It's possible to do so, I just want to know how.  I honestly don't think we'll ever be in a Post-PC era until all tablets allow us to use USB in the way computers do.
No, USB is not the future, you missed the memo about cloud and wireless computing?

We've used the 400 to 800 firewire cables with limited success in the past...dropped frames was the main problem. Only used them until the Sonnet FireWire PCIe Card came in to allow a 400 firewire.

  • Firefox no longer recognizes wireless printer! HELP!

As others have posted numerous times, I am no longer able to print from my Canon MX340 printer. All was fine until I updated Firefox a couple of weeks ago. The printer works PERFECTLY AS IT SHOULD from Internet Explorer, Google, Iron browsers, so it HAS to do something with Firefox. and NOT the printer.
I have already tried to reset the printer settings in about:config as suggested by many, but this does NOT solve the problem. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, but this does nothing to solve the printer issue either.
Would you PLEASE tell me, as well as the many others having this same issue, how this is to be resolved or if we'll have to wait until the next update to see any change? I really don't want to go back to using Internet Explorer!
Thank you in advance for your reply! :)

i have recommended this procedure because quite a few other users have reported that the printer dialog doesn't show up with firefox 27 and up and avast. many antivirus programs still stay active in the background even if their UI shows them as disabled - so i think it's better to test it by uninstalling avast. after a restart it should be immediately apparent if printing works again in firefox.

  • Mac Pro no longer recognizes Optical drives

I was working on my mac Pro and it suddenly restarted itself. After that happened neither Superdrive would be recocnized by the OS. Oddly it took a very long time to boot, approximately 2 minutes. I have a Apple OEM DVR-111PB and a Pioneer DVR-112D. I disconnected the drives and it booted normally fairly quick. So I tested the two on another mac and the DVR-111PB will not recognize anything put in it. The other one works fine.
So I just installed the DVR-112 only, in the Mac Pro and it took a while to boot up and it still would not recocgnize it.
I have zapped the pram, reset the SMC and attempted to reinstall the upgrade to 10.4.11 to no avail.
Any thoughts on why the OS is not communicating with the drives? I do get the -70012 "A valid DVD drive could not be found." error message when I tried to run the Apple DVD player.
I have an external firewire DVD and I'm thinking I may have to reinstall the OS from it.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

After getting into this a little further it is looking like it may be a power supply issue. I ran the extended diagnostic utility on an external firewire drive and everything passed. I measured voltage at the power connector for the optical drives and on the 12V side it is only getting 9.7VDC and the 5V side it is at 4.9VDC. As I mentioned in the OP the drives spin up and such attached to another computer. I'm wondering if the powersupply is going bad and the 9.7V isn't enough to run the drive. I hooked the DVD drives up to an external power supply while the data cable was connected to the mac and viola, the drive is recognized, actually both DVDs are recognized when hooked up in this manner. So essentially the DVD drives are OK as well as the ATA bus.
Now to the power issue. The power supply on the 12V side of the connector seem to vary all over the place, anywhere from 6 to 11.55 volts on the 12V side of the connector. The 5V side is a constant 4.9VDC.
I'll see what I can find for power supply diagnostics. I'm wondering if the 12V comes straight from the power supply or does it go through some voltage regulator on the main board to reduce the voltage to 12VDC. There are 4 connectors on the power supply marked PS1 through PS4. I need to find out what is what. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • My mac air does not recognize my printer connected to a network

Is usb to lightening the correct connection to see the printer

    Hello there, Appletreflie.
The following Knowledge Base article should have some practical information for you to help setup your printer:
OS X Mountain Lion: Set up a printer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11145
    Specifically:
Add a network printer to your list of printers
You can connect to printers on your local network that use Bonjour, IP, and Open Directory, as well as shared printers and printers connected to a Time Capsule or AirPort base station.
Be sure to follow any instructions from your network administrator.
If the printer isn’t connected to your network, follow the instructions that came with the printer to unpack it, install ink or toner, add paper, and connect it to your network. If you’re connecting a printer to a Time Capsule or AirPort base station’s USB port, see this help topic:Set up a printer connected to a Time Capsule or AirPort base station
Choose Apple menu > Software Update to make sure OS X has the latest information about printer software it can download from Apple.Usually you shouldn’t install software that came with the printer on your Mac. OS X downloads the latest printer software automatically.
Open a document to print, and then choose File > Print.
Open the Printer pop-up menu and choose your printer in the Nearby Printers section of the menu.
If you don’t see your printer, choose Add Printer from the Printer pop-up menu.A dialog appears listing any Bonjour, IP, shared, and Open Directory printers on your local network. It may take a minute or two for your printer to appear. If you’re asked for an administrator name and password
Select your printer when it appears in the list, and then click Add.OS X automatically uses AirPrint if your printer supports it, or it selects printer software (also called a printer driver) and downloads it from Apple if necessary.
If you don’t see your printer in the list, do one of the following:
For an IP printer, click IP in the toolbar and enter the printer’s information. For more information, see this help topic:Set up an IP printer
For a shared Windows printer, click Windows in the toolbar and enter the printer’s information. For more information, see this help topic:Connect to a printer shared by a Windows computer
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • My late 2008 Mac Pro no longer recognizes my DVD Player/Recorder.

It stopped working properly after I installed one of the later Snow Leopard updates.  When I insert a blank DVD I don't get the icon on the desktop that I used to get.  It seems to recognize music CDs, however.  I can't record to CD or DVD.  Has anyone had this problem that might be able to tell me how to fix it.  I could just purchase a new "SuperDrive" online, but I'm afraid its an OS problem and not the hardware itself.  I figured I would install Lion and that would fix it, but it didn't.  Any help would be appreciated.

well, you could try using one of those brush type cleaning dvd things, or blasting the lens with compressed air. If that doesn't work, you may have to shut your Mac Pro down, take the side panel  off,  disconnect the power cord, get in there, disconnect the power and data cable from the dvd drive, wiggle it out, take off the top cover of the dvd drive, clean the lens with a cotton swab and some pure isopropyl alcohol, clean out any dust and crud in there, put the top cover of the dvd drive back, wiggle the drive back in, reinstall the data and power cables, put the side panel back on, then reboot your Mac. Failing that, repair permissions. Your drive may also be toast, especially if you've been using it a lot. Did you know you can pretty much use any ATAPI dvd burning drive in your mac? it's true. I put a lite-on dvd drive from a pc that was about to fail into my mac pro's 2nd dvd drive cage, set both drives to cable select and it worked fine-just like that
    hope that helped

  • OS 9 Emulator no longer recognizes my printer from the chooser

I am using OS 10.4.7. I have an older version of MS Word that runs on the System 9 emulator. So far, I've been doing fine with this, but today the chooser would not let me select my printer, and so I could not print out of MS Word.
I'd like to fix this, and I've tried reinstalling the drivers from HP.com, but there are so many now for this particular Deskjet 1220c. Plus, do I reinstall the driver for 10.4.7, hoping it will take of 9 in the process, or install a version for 9? I've done both to no avail. I'm not really sure which driver to reinstall. At any rate, the chooser steadfastly refuses to show the printer so that I may select it.
I'd upgrade to Word for OS X, but they don't sell it separately, and I can't afford the entire Office Package right now. Any ideas on how I can fix this?
    Thanks,

    Thanks John,
I ended up having to rebuild my System 9 from scratch, only to find that re-plugging in the USB cable from the keyboard to the laptop did the trick. The very patient Mac Technician must have spent 4 hours with me on the phone as we went though every possibility on our tedious process of elimination. I did need a specific driver since this was a Deskjet, and couldn't see it in the chooser any other way. He said that USB ports in the keyboard have less power than the ones in the computer itself. Up until I had the problem, it was working perfectly through the keyboard port, so who knew? It just suddenly stopped working, so I immediately suspected the software, not the hardware.
    Thanks,

  • Mac partition no longer recognizes keyboard

    Hi,
Recently when I restarted my computer I got a weird notification that said it was going to update th "BIOS" on my MacBook pro. This alone seemed weird since macs don't use bios... but before I could do anything about it my computer initiated the restart and when it booted up to my lock screen, the keyboard was unresponsive. on top of this, anything plugged into the USB ports is unresponsive as well. I was afraid my computer was shot, but I tried a hard restart and I could still hold option and select my windows partition to boot from. after it loaded, my keyboard and USB peripherals still worked well. Any ideas on what the problem could be and what I might be able to do to fix it?

imho then bootcamp is not much more troublesome then installing a clean install of windows on a computer which didn't have it preinstalled but for many people thats not for them
other then that macs really really like to use the apple bootcamp drivers letting windows update or manually installing driver mean you're gonna have a bad time
for people who need not play 3d games or use very taxing applications a vitual machine is likely better

  • My MAC desktop no longer recognizes my iPhone 4

I've had my iPhone 4 since last fall, and when I first got it I was able to plug it into my computer and it was recognized; however, now when I plug in my phone to do updates, my computer won't recognize it.  I'm two or three upgrades behind apparenlty, so does that have something to do with it?  Thanks! : )

What version of OS X are you running and what version of iOS are you running on the phone?

  • MacBook no longer able to print wirelessly?

    Hello
I have an issue that I can't seem to come up with a reason for or a resolution. I apologize in advance for the length of this posting.
We have a Dell Laptop that is connected wirelessly to a Brother MFC-420CN printer. We have a Linksys Router. Previously, we'd also had been connected wirelessly to the same printer and our MacBook. The Mac was connected to the printer through an Internet/IPP connection, using the IP address. We had no trouble printing from the Mac.
On Christmas, the Mac stopped printing wirelessly to the printer. We got the message "Failed to connect to device." We tried re-installing, etc, and finally went out and bought a USB/printer cable and connected hardwire Mac to printer, and after that, it again printed wirelessly.
    Problem solved, right?
Now, its happened again, but we cannot get the Mac and the printer to talk to each other. Each time we try, we get the same message "Failed to connect to device" but nothing has changed! This has happened literally overnight, one night it prints wirelessly, the next day it doesn't. Even connecting hardwire between the Mac & printer does not help this time. We've tried everything we can think of.
No issues w/the PC and printer at all.
Additional info: The PC and the Mac are NOT networked w/each other. Also, when we enter in the original IP address under the Mac printer installation, it immediately identifies the printer as the MFC-420CN, however, this is NOT the same IP address as on the Linksys router, but if we put in the IP address on the router, it no longer recognizes the printer.Printer sharing is enabled on the PC, although it wasn't previously. We can print hardwire from the Mac. Finally, the router and the Mac work fine wirelessly for the internet.
We're literally at a loss. It worked fine, then overnight, it doesn't.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated! I am a new Mac user so please bear with me!
Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello
We weren't using that method to add the printer, however, we did try using both the original IP address as well as the one we see when we open the router properties, and still no luck.
Does the printer have its on IP address? Separate from the router IP address? If so, how would we find it?
    Thanks

  • Mavericks won't recognize my lacie external hard drive

I've been using a LaCie external hard drive for my Time Machine backups and it's been working fine until a couple of weeks ago. Mavericks no longer recognizes the drive. I tested the drive out on a non-Mavericks Macbook and it booted up fine. I see there are issues with this, but wondering if anyone has a work around or if you've found there is a fix I can do? Really frustrating to not be able to access my archives or be able to back up my work!

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
