My Mac Mini does not wake up from sleep. What to do?

After my brand new Mac Mini goes to sleep (by timer or manually), my Apple monitor usually (but not always) refuses to wake from sleep. Sometimes I can get the display to return, sometimes not, but in either case there is no subsequent response to my bluetooth mouse or keyboard, and my only choice is to shut down with the power button.
(I know there have been other question on similar issues, but most are old, and recent ones do not seem to have been answered. At this point, on Apple's advice, I am about to return the computer, but was wondering if anyone has solved a similar problem)
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yes, you would be surprised as to what low voltage (brownouts) can do. The problem is, most people don't realise how dumb the power supplies in our computers are and how variable their electrical supply is.
To illustrate this, we used to have a light plugged into a power board which was powered by a 5 step line conditioner (basically a UPS without a battery) and you be amazed as to how low the voltage gets. When the nominal voltage was between 196 and 240V (the line did nothing at this point) the light was constant enough although once it went below 196V the line conditioner kicked in topping the voltage up to 240V all of a sudden the light output doubled. On a bad evening this would be flicking up and down all night. Can you imagine what this would be doing to a computer?
My recommendation for you and everyone else would be to buy a UPS regardless. For the small amount a UPS costs they're well worth the investment.
My current favourite are the APC Back-UPS RS series for important/sensitive equipment although these do cost a little more and the 1000/1500VA units are quite big (so check the dimensions carefully). I have a 1000VA unit for my desk, another for my plasma TV and home cinema equipment and an 800VA for my ADSL line and server. Additionally I use the APC Back-UPS ES 500VA units (they have a much more convenient standard power plug for appliances rather than a D type plug) for less important/sensitive equipment like the fax machine, laser printer etc.

  • After installing iCloud mac does not wake up from sleep

I have all of the necessary components and software for running iCloud however my computer will not wake up from sleep. I only get the gray sceen.  Any ideas?????

You shouldn't need software (other than Lion).
I'd reboot it and see if that gets around the issue.  It isn't supposed to do that.
Press and hold the power button until the Macbook reboots.

  • Mac Mini does not wake Cintiq

For 2 years, I used a Cintiq 21UX as the main monitor with a 2009 Mac Mini. It was connected with a mini displayport to DVI-I adapter and worked perfectly.
I replaced the Mac with a new i7 with the same setup (the mini displayport plugs into the thunderbolt port). When I boot the system or wake it from sleep, the image does not appear on the screen. The Cintiq's status light turns blue for a few second (its ON setting) then turns amber (its SLEEP setting). I have to unplug it and plug it back in to get the image to display.
I updated to the latest Wacom driver, reset the PRAM and SMC, but the problem persists.

Out of curiosity, I compared the tech specs for both Macs, under Graphics and video support.
2009 mini: DVI output using Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter (included) http://support.apple.com/kb/SP577
2011 mini: DVI output using HDMI to DVI Adapter (included) http://support.apple.com/kb/SP632
There's no mention for or against using a Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter in the 2011 model. But OWC lists its adapter as compatible with the 2011 model. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/CBLMDPDVI/

  • Mac Pro will not wake up from sleep mode

    Hi,
In my Energy Saver I have my system set to go to sleep after 15 minutes of not being used.  Unfortuantely, when I try to wake the system up from sleep mode, it freezes on the screen saver and I have to hard restart the computer to get it to turn on again.  I see that this is an issue with MacBook Pros, but I'm not seeing much in the Mac Pro Towers.  I did see a thread about Parallels VM causing causing OSX to not wake up from hibernation mode, but I am not always running my VM Ware when the system decides to not wake up.  Any help/advice is appreciated.
    Thank you,

    OS X Version 10.6.7

.... and you fail to mention the model SSD and firmware version... or how you installed or cloned the system
most people also move most of their user folder to another hard drive.
sounds like a more normal Mail + OS issue if just that.
hard restarts = directory corruption so don't reboot w/o first either Recovery Mode, then follow up with Safe Boot.
And maybe you have 3rd party hardware or software that is not compatible with 10.8.2 needs to be considered as well.
2008 model 3,1 also are having a lot of issues this year. Including another critical piece, what gpu it has.

  • Lenovo 11s- Screen Does Not Wake Up From Sleep

My Lenovo Yoga 11s does not wake up after putting it to sleep. I will press the power button multiple times, but the screen stays black. To turn it on I have to press the power button for 10 seconds so it completely shuts off, then I push the power button to turn it on. However when I do this all my tabs and windows are closed, which is very inconvenient.

  • 23" Cinema Display (clear frame) does not 'wake up' from Sleep

A strange thing has been occurring in the last month or so. When my Mac Pro (OS 10.5.8) awakes from 'Sleep' mode the monitor does not come on. When I push the 'On' button in the lower right hand corner of the display frame the light comes on and then goes off when my finger pressure is removed.
The only 'fix' so far is to shut down the entire system for a minute or more by pressing the Mac Pro 'On/Off' button and then pressing the button to start up. And sometimes the display does not come one even then, necessitating several tries.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

I have a 2.2Ghz Macbook Core 2 Duo system purchased in December 2007. I have 2GB RAM installed.
My system has developed a weird problem where it won't come out of sleep ... 100% of the time now.
I've tried resetting PRAM/NVRAM, resetting the power module and even reinstalled Leopard. Nothing has helped. I'm at my wit's end.
When I put my system into sleep mode, it goes into sleep mode as you would expect. However, when I wake the system (by opening the lid or pressing any key), the system looks as though it's come out of sleep (ie. there's a picture of desktop) and I can move my mouse but I can't click anything. I can't Cmd-Opt-Esc either. I have to perform a hard-reset at that point.
I have quit all other applications to try to isolate the problem and I'm beginning to think it's either Leopard or my MacBook. Either way, it's annoying as **.
Has anyone come up with a way to fix this? Doesn't seem like I'm the only one.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • DELL Inspiron N5110 does not Shut Down and does not wake up from Sleep

    Hello.
I have Dell Inspiron N5110 which cannot shut down neither in Windows 7 nor in Ubuntu Linux. I specifically booted Ubuntu Live from the CD to eliminate the possibility that  the problem is in the Windows 7. Shutdown in Ubuntu does not work either. This proves that the reason in not a BACKGROUND application in Windows that remains hanging and does not allow the laptop to shut down.
The laptop cannot wake up after Sleep or Hibernate either.
I have tried every solution that you advised to all the other people in the forum that have the same issue.
    1. The laptop cannot shut down in Safe Mode either.
    2. It cannot shut down even after Clean Boot Mode - all non-MS services disabled and all Startups disabled.
    3. I tried changing the Advanced Power Options of "Allow Hybrid Sleep" - both ON for "On AC Power" and "Running on battery" - no change.
    4. I tried installing the latest video drivers for Nvidia. This did not help either.
    5. Running only on battery does not change anything - still cannot shutdown.
    6. Running only on AC adapter without battery - still cannot shutdown.
    7. I tried removing the AC adapter and battery and holding the POWER button for 30 seconds to RESET the laptop - did not work.
ATTENTION: I've been reading your forums all day and saw at least 10-15 reports of the same problem and not a single fixed case.
    8. This is why I have not tried Flashing the BIOS to the latest version - I read other people tried that and it didn't work either.
    9. I loaded BIOS default settings (F9) - still cannot shutdown.
REMARK: Changing something in the BIOS and trying to Exit once caused the laptop to freeze and I had to Power Off by holding the button for longer.
    10. I ran DELL Diagnostics from Boot menu (F12 at startup) - no errors found.
    11. I could not locate IEEE 1394 Adapter in Device Manager to change its Power Management settings.
Actually none of the suggestions you may give for changing something in Windows makes sense because I already mentioned that shut down in Ubuntu does not work either.
The issue seems to be either in the BIOS or a hardware problem. But which component? Is it the CD/DVD drive?
    This is a new laptop.
Please advice how to proceed. If you know which component fails please tell me.

Remove the keyboard and palm rest (guide from dell shows you how) and you should see a small coin cell battery. Remove it for at least 10 seconds, then put it back in. Enter BIOS and make sure there isn't anything weird that was changed. It should work properly now. I have had this working in Ubuntu 12.04 for the last few days, with no problems.

  • Powerbook 5,7 boots only after pmu reset, does not wake up from sleep

    Hello,
my PB 5,7 wont boot normally. I got to reset the pmu every time i try to power on, even when i put it into sleep it will not wake up - only after the pmu reset.
What i tryed until now is:
reset pram, disconnect: HD, optical drive, PC Card, Soudboard, Airport, right USB board, left USB Flex cable, fans – no other reaction.
I changed: Topcase with keyboard, DC-IN board, power cables, batterie cable, RAM and right USB board with the pram batterie - every time it will only start with the pmu reset.
I installed a new tiger system and also a new leopard from orig. DVDs and updated both via Airport with the combo updates.
Now i dont have any further idea. Every help would be appreciated! Did i have overseen a crucial thing? Thank you all!
    Must I replace the Logicboard?
    Best regards
    siebo

    Hallo,
yes I run the AHT. There came no error message. For the AHT my Powerbooks seems totaly ok. And I also reset my Mac's PRAM and NVRAM without any results.
But thank you for your suggestions!
    regards

  • Computer does not wake up from sleep

I have my Macbook set up to prompt me for my password when I bring it out of sleep. Lately, however, it has woken to a black screen and does not bring up the prompt box for my password, leaving me unable to bring it out of sleep mode. I can usually fix this by restarting the computer manually, but it's still sort of troubling.
My computer has also been running warmer lately, even though I haven't been placing as much a load on its memory as usual. That, I haven't been able to solve--even reducing the number of applications keeps it running at a higher temperature than usual. Any suggestions?

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes drop down menu. Click twice on the CPU column header to display in descending order. You are looking for a process consuming a large amount of CPU time. This is generally the sign of a crashed process. Select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar then click on the Force Quit button. This should kill the runaway process.
Open the Console application and check for any entries that may indicate why the process crashed. Often it's caused by an application that is incompatible or by a corrupted preference or cache file.

please advise me how can i solve this issue

    Hi
Tempro will notify you if new BIOS has been uploaded.
But I recommend you downloading such BIOS manually from the Toshiba European driver page and then to run a update
Read the also FAQ: [how to update the BIOS |http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=60] before starting such procedure.

  • Mac Pro will not wake up from sleep

After replacing my boot HD with a Solid State Disk, I have had experienced a couple of strange problems.  One, is that Apple Mail will sometimes not quit when commanded to do so, it requires a force quit.  Mail remaining open causes a hang when trying to shut down. Second, when the machine goes to sleep due to inactivity, it often cannot be awakened.  The only way to restore normal operation is to hold the on/off button until the computer shuts down.  I can then restart and all is normal.  I can not confirm that this behavior is related to my SSD boot disk, but it did not happen prior to using the SSD.
I have an early 2008 MacPro, 10 GB RAM, 120 GB SSD, running OS X 10.8.2.

.... and you fail to mention the model SSD and firmware version... or how you installed or cloned the system

  • G460 does not wakes up from sleep but no display

    Dear All
I have bought a Lenovo G460 about a month a go. I have set it on High Performance power plan through Lenovo energy managment.
When ever the system goes to sleep in balanced power plan, after i try to being it to wake the screen stays blank, though hard disk keeps running and all other lights come up. So i put it on performance mode, which only switches off the display. But even then the same problem remains.

    Processor: iCore 3 2.16 GHz
    Video: NVidia 310M
    Ram: 4 GB
OS: Win 7 HP 64 bit

Tried with NVidia latest drivers(256.88) but the problem remains. Tried bios update yesterday and update was very successful but still the problem remains.

  • MBP will not wake up from Sleep

    Hi,
I installed Leopard successfully on Friday, and since then, my computer does not wake up from sleep about 50% of the time.
When I open the lid to attempt to wake it up, I hear the normal CD drive clicking sound (not the best way to describe the sound, but I don't know how else haha), but the screen just remains black. I cannot tell however, if it is a) waking up and the screen is remaining black or b) not waking up at all. The only way to remedy this is to hard to a hard shut down with the power button and then to power back on.
Anybody else experience this or know what could be causing this? I never had this problem with Tiger in the 5 months that I had it on my MBP.
    Thanks for the help!

Just installed Leopard on my original 15" MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo. Last night, I had several applications open (Safari, Transmit, Timbuktu Pro) set up in separate Spaces. I closed the lid to put the machine to sleep. The sleep light was pulsing normally.
This morning, when I opened the MBP, the screen came on ok showing the last Safari page I was on and the Airport Indicator showed that it re-connected to my wifi as normal. However, the cursor was scrambled (the was a vague set of dots but no arrow where the cursor should be). This "scrambled cursor" moved around the screen when I moved my finger on the trackpad but the computer did not respond to any mouse clicks or keyboard input. I tried commandoptionQ to force quit but no luck. Eventually I had to press & hold the power button to force a restart & the computer then started up normally.
