My Mac Mini is dropping pixels

I have a 2010 Mac mini That I use for my media centre. It's hooked up via HDMI to a 42" LCD TV and is running the latest version of Mavericks.
The problem is about once a week, I need to restart it because some pixels mostly tool bar and the Dock ones go black.
Is there a fix for this or might it be the Graphics card is dying a slow death?

I have not tried logging out then back in but instead restart it. This seems to fixes it, but it  reoccurs a week or less later and a restart is required to fix it for another week or so.
I am now wondering if it is an issue in Mavericks itself since I've had this Mini since Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion it never did this till Mavericks.
I use it daily and let it sleep over night, rebooting it every 2 weeks or so but now, I reboot it every Saturday (weekly).

  • My mac mini keeps dropping wifi connectivity

    Hi Folks,
My new Mini keeps dropping wifi connectivity so I lose the connection to Apple TV and even just browsing on Safari seems painful hoping a page will load before losing connectivity. I reset my router, restart the mini and it intermittently keeps happening. Has anyone come up with a workable solution?
    Thanks

Hi Leo, this has worked for a few...
Though all of these steps may or may not be needed, I'm including them all.
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
    Click OK.

  • Mac mini 2011 White Pixels and Resolution Off

I just replaced my 2010 mac mini with the 2.5 ghz 2011 version and I noticed my resolution has been shifted up about 8 pixels and I see lots of white pixel glittering.  The glittering and image shift disappears when I change the resolution to 1080i instead of 1080p.  I have the same HDMI connection as I had before connected to my Westinghouse HDTV.  How can I fix this?

Just a thought.  I had audio noise problems on my mini.  Went thru two mini's and two speaker systems till I figured out it was power line noise.  Got a filtered power strip - noise gone.

  • Mac Mini Network dropping

I have a Mac Mini sharing a Verizon DSL network with an iPhone 6 and an older iPad.   Except for the iPad, the devices are all up on the latest Apple software.  My iOS devices are typically cabled to USB ports when I'm home using my Mini.
It just started happening recently.   After breezing along for a while on my Mac, my internet service will die, frozen progress bar on accessing web pages, Safari NOT crashed, I still have normal Mac functions except for internet.  Often, restarting the DSL router solves the problem.   Also, restarting the computer has solved the problem occasionally.   I've tried networking the Mini wirelessly AND by ethernet, same result.
The only thing that always works is using iPhone's personal hotspot cellular connection to the internet via USB.   But I have to be careful about my data limits.
My first thought was that my carrier's DSL router and service were repeatedly failing.   So far, they're only interested in having me restart my router, and they don't seem to grasp that I'm having to do this 8 times a day
Now I'm wondering if Yosemite on my Mac mini is causing the problem.   I don't see recent posts on this board about networking problems though.

    Hello whsiii,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you are being disconnected from the internet. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

  • I rented a movie on my mac mini buts its pixelated, how can i get it to work?

I rented a movie from the itunes store i can get audio but the video is pixelated.
    How can I fix this?

    Howdy Twetz8,
To view the movie you rented with your Mac on your iPad you would sync it from the Mac to the iPad.
About renting movies from the iTunes Store - Apple Support
If you rented the movie on your computer, but want to watch it on an iOS device, connect the devices and sync using USB. When you move a rented movie from your computer, it will disappear from your computer’s iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as often as you want, but you can only have it on one device at a time.
If you rented the movie on your iOS device or Apple TV, you can’t move it to any other device.
To watch an HD movie, you need to play it on a supported device: your computer, iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or TV using Apple TV.
    Enjoy,
    Nubz

  • IMovie '08 on my mac mini '07 drops audio levels at ends of clips no matter what I do to stop it!

In some but not all of the clips in my project, the audio level drops down for the last half second or so. I have tried every effing audio setting including setting fade to 0 seconds manual, normalizing, not normalizing, and every combination I can think of, but it's just not working.
When I google this problem, I find a few unanswered questions going back to imovie 2 in 2003, but no solutions short of remove the auto fade and set manual to zero, which again, isn't working for me. It really ***** to spend a whole afternoon working on a project to have it corrupted beyond repair. Anybody have any ideas of how to fix this, short of getting adobe premiere and/or a newer mac or even, a windows machine?

Ok, here's another set of step-by-step instructions for configuring an extended network. Please give them a try to be sure you didn't miss anything.
Dynamic WDS - Extending a Wireless Network Setup
If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
Open AirPort Utility, and then, select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the base station network and base station password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Mid 2010 Mac Mini -- Can see pixelated desktop through browser window

    Hello,
Sometimes when I am browsing I can see certain areas of my screen that are pixelated and I can see pieces of my desktop in these pixelated areas. Is there something wrong with my graphics card or does this just happen to everyone? I'm using an HDMI connection to a 32" LCD TV.
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
    Regards,
    GMack523

    Problem sorted.
By using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter and then a DVI to HDMI cable the monitor works fine.
I had previously tried the same cable with the HDMI to DVI cable that was in the product box, so there is clearly a difference in the way the two display ports support even the same resolutions.
    Thanks

  • Mac mini constanty drops off wifi connection and then reconnects

New MacMini constantly loses wifi connection.  IPad a few deetaway has excellent connection.

This issue cropped up for me when I upgraded to Leopard, and you will find similair threads in the MacBook discussions. It appear to be a timing issue as the network stack wakes up from sleep. The 2 simples solutions are to either turn on SSID broadcast (this worked for me) at the router or to turn Airport Off and On when the mini wakes up. Several folks in the developer area have submitted bug reports, I expect this will be addressed in short order.

  • I dropped my macbook pro and the screen is broken can i still use it with an external monitor? Or can I or how do I transfer hard drive files to my mac mini?

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.

  • Late 2012 mac mini display signal drops while booting and monitor goes to sleep

I have a new Late 2012 Mac Mini.  I have had it for a week, what just started happening is that during restart, the video signal drops and my monitor goes to sleep.  I then have to toggle through the input options on the monitor and the video signal is detected again and the monitor wakes up.
Here is what I see - If i shut down and then power back up, I get the grey screen, then the apple logo, then the little status circle spins for a few cycles then stops and then the screen goes black and the monitor says signal lost and then 5 seconds later goes to sleep.
It is possible it is my monitor but, I haven't had any issues with it and i only drops the signal like that during a reboot.

Welcome to the family. Search this forum for the main thread for this problem titled: "mac mini 2012 video blinking out".

  • Mac Mini gets wifi connection for 3 seconds, then drops it.

    Hey all,
Long time listener, first time caller.
I'm running a 1.66 Mac Mini with 10.5.4 on it. My wifi network is based on a Comcast broadband connection and is broadcast through an 802.11g Airport Express. Also on the network are: a Macbook (3,1), my iBook G4 (1.33 ghz), my original iPhone, my Tivo, an HP desktop using an 802.11g wireless adapter and occasionally a Wii. All of these have great wifi connections, run fast and connect easily. The wifi is normally WEP ASCII 128 bit encrypted.
The Mac Mini, however, does not. The Mac Mini has been in several positions near my TV (This is what it uses as a monitor), but in most of these has had an extremely hard time finding the wifi network. This got a bit better after I removed all of it's locations, keychains and such and re-set-up everything. Except it still, whenever it connects, drops the web connection within about 10 seconds on an extremely good day. I'll select my network from the Airport drop down menu, it'll join happily, I'll click a bookmark and the page will load very slowly, get about halfway and then stop. Sometimes it'll just go straight to "You are not connected to the internet. (Network Diagnostics)" When I click network diagnostics, either Airport Settings or ISP has failed, but when I go through the process of trying to repair/diagnose the problem, suddenly they will all be working fine.
For what it's worth, I took it to the Genius Bar, and it worked amazingly well on the Apple Store Wifi.
    Any thoughts?

I was having an identical issue with my Mini, and I have an eerily similar mix of devices on my network. Last night I went into my Airport Express configuration and changed the channel that it is broadcasting on (also turned on Interference Robustness) and everything is now working great. By default, my Airport channel was broadcasting on channel 1 - I changed it manually to channel 7, restarted the Airport and that did the trick. All of my macs (including the Mini), tivos and wii are now getting a stronger wireless signal since I changed the channel.

  • Dropping WiFi Connections after new Mac Min and Upgrade

First of all does anyone know why this discussion was archived when there was never a solution posted?
        https://discussions.apple.com/message/12586041?tstart=0#12586041
Secondly (why I found that thread among many others addressing the same problem). I received a new Mac Mini for XMas (cool, I needed it) which worked fine with my other computer and devices (2 iPads, 2 iPhones, 2 Win7 Laptops and 2 Win7 desktops) for a couple days, so I thought. Now all these devices got along very well until Mr. Mini comes along. Then I note wireless drops occasionally, it seemed to come back so I wasn't too upset, yet and decided to deal with it later and enjoy my vacation.
Now, after I allowed Leopard to do its upgrade (I had deferred that) I now have all the above devices dropping wifi and physical LAN connections as long as this Mini is powered on. I shut it off, Internet is blazing, I turn it on, Internet falters and screeches to a halt.
Since all my other devices have worked cooperatively for several years and this device comes along and crashed the party im pretty convinced its not my router or computers. I am not interested in trial and error here. i have many better more important things to do and this is Apples responsability to figure out. I am a very savy IT dude (career professional) and want to get to the bottom of this for everyone.
Soooo.... What changed? Why does this device kill my network when it is turned on (note, no alterations from out-of-the box to any network protocol or config.) and why does a thread (one of many) without a solution get trumped on by Apple?
    Apple?

  • Does the mac mini have air drop? the newest verison

Yes, that is Apple's latest model Mini. It's called the "late 2012" model since it has not been updated since then.

  • Brand New Mac Mini drops network after a few minutes

My new Mac Mini (Core Duo) arrived a couple of days back and I couldn't wait to set it up. The next thing I did was to download all the latest updates but the network connection kept dropping after a few minutes (seemingly randomly). This is the wired connection (not airport) and all other computers on the network are working fine.
I thought it might have been a problem with the updates site but now I'm trying to copy my data across the network from my old Windows XP PC (I want to switch) and the connection hangs again after a few minutes.
The only way to get the network back up is to reboot the system, then it works okay for a few more minutes. I've changed the Ethernet cable and the other PCs are working fine - it's just the Mac that has issues.
I wondered if the network card is faulty but does anyone have any other ideas?
I guess as this is only a few days old Apple might exchange it?
    </Mark>
Mac Mini Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi John,
My ISP is PlusNet and there are 2 Windows XP PCs, a Windows 2003 Server, 2 Windows 2003 virtual servers, an HP printer, a DLink Wireless Access Point and a Linksys NSLU2 NAS box all working perfectly happily here - the Mac is the only machine that doesn't want to play.
The router only has a single Ethernet port so that's connected to a Netgear 10/100Mbps hub which the other devices use.
In addition it's all NATted so the ISP could only block my external IP address - they don't have access to the router config and in any case all the other devices are communicating with the Internet over the ADSL link with no problems so I think I can rule out the ISP doing anything nasty.
    Thanks for the suggestion anyway.
So... here's the progress to date:
I spent two hours on the phone to Apple Support at national rate phone charges. I finally snapped when they asked me to check the firewall settings on my Windows PC (I pointed out that if there was a firewall issue then no data would copy - not several hundred megabytes before timing out). They suggested I took the Mac to an AppleCare centre for diagnosis to see if it could copy files from another Mac (so much for interoperability - they only care that it works with Macs).
I have confirmed that the problem exists on both static IP and DHCP configurations, and whether or not I set the duplex manually or automatically on the network connection. Interestingly it only occurs connected to a 100Mbps/half duplex hub (not a 10/half hub or a 100/full switch or a 100/full crossover cable) but as all the other devices are working fine I can rule out issues withe the hub.
So, now I have the Mac connected to a 100Mbps/full duplex switch, with no other devices connected. That switch has a link to the hub with the other devices connected and on to my ADSL router.
Everything seems to be working but obviously it's not an ideal situation as the Mac should work on the same Ethernet hub as everything else.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. If anyone has any further ideas I'd love to hear from you.
    Cheers, Mark

  • Mac Mini drops internet connection (ethernet)

    Hi
I have a brand new mac mini w/ mac Os 10.5.2. I connect to the internet via ethernet: it works fine for some time (30 mins, 2 hours) then, apparently for no special reason, it drops the connection and I need to reboot to restore it. It is connected to a switch hub with other devices (macBook, AppleTv) that continue to work fine, so it is not an ISP issue. After rebooting the problem occurs with higher frequency, i.e. connection lasts for shorter and shorter periods then reboot is needed every other 5 mins.
I have no clue whether it is a hardware or software problem -- please help.
    Thank you

    Hi Keith
Thank you for your message - I figure it should be something like what you are saying. I am still kind of puzzled to why it connects OK with iBook, even when it is connected alone and/or together with AppleTV and/or macMini.
I have another macMini (PowerPC) at the office connected to same hub type (same ISP, same hardware) and I never experienced a problem like that although we are using it with other iMac's on the same network.
I will give it a try and get a router to see if your suggestion is right.
    Thank you again,
    macko d.
