My Mac Mini keeps rebooting itself automatically after I've shut it down!

Hi All,
Something that has been going on for a few months now is that when I go to close down my Mac Mini, it goes to the white screen, then goes black, and then suddenly reboots, and comes up with something like "Your computer is rebooting because of a problem"....I am running Mountain Lion (latest version).
I can avoid this happening 9 times out of 10 if I go into Disk Utility and do a 'repair permissions', but surely this is WRONG.
I have my Mini plugged into an Apple LED Cinema Display, so problems with HDMI as I've read in other threads.
Anybody else experiencing this problem and anybody resolved it?
Thanks
P

  • My Mac mini keeps rebooting

My Mac mini with lion x server software keeps rebooting following the recent lion software update. How can I fix the problem? I don't have a start up disk. Can I repair my installion without an external drive

The first thing I would try is safe boot. Hold down the shift key right after power on. This often solves issues that arrives right after an update.

Give it a try and report back!

  • Mac mini keeps restarting itself....

    Hi,
I've just bought a refurb mac mini. The problem is it keeps restarting itself every so often. I've read a post from about a month or so ago saying that it could be something to do with RAM. Can anyone confirm that? I was just wondering if there was anything I could try before having to take it back the the apple store.
    Thanks x
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

There are a number of possible causes of random restarts, but RAM is certainly one of the more common ones.
Given that the unit has just been purchased, I would return it rather than try and effect a resolution yourself, particularly since many of the potential fixes involve opening the system up, and the common causes would indicate that the system had previously been worked on.

  • I just upgrade my ram to 16g from 4 and my mac mini keeps rebooting

i just upgraded my mac mini from 4 to 16 g of ram and now it keeps rebooting. Any idea what the problem could be or is it a hardware problem and how to tell?

    1)  It is Important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
Use this Link to check which RAM is suitable for your Mac...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/
The site also have videos on how to Install RAM should you need it...

    2)  Check that the RAM is seated correctly.
    3)  Try it with only the Original RAM installed.

  • My mac mini keeps logging me out after no activity.

the option to check/uncheck, "log out after X mins of no activity" is not an option to select.
when it forces a logout, the screen saver is showing, not moving, and when you move the cursor, it acts like an eraser and removes the part of the screen savor picture revealing the login screen underneath. of course this starts happening when my warranty period is over.
can anyone help? i've looked all over the net for this issue.
    thanks.

I had already done that for the screen saver a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, since I'm new to mac I can't do a screen shot, but several users had recommended going to Apple > System Preferences > Security & Privicy > General and uncheck the box " Logout after [______] minutes of inactivity." There was a screen shot in one conversation I had and it showed 5 options under this specific tab, including the auto logout option. My mac only has 4 options and does not include the logout option in this area. So I started looking around under every single app under System Preferences and when I opened Security & Privacy, on the bottom right corner is a button for Advanced. I opened that and the option for Auto logout is there. I unchecked it. So we'll see if this solves the issue.
Thanks for all the input. I appreciate it.

  • Mac Pro Keeps Rebooting itself

Hello, I am trying to figure out what is wrong with a Mac Pro I have.  It is 2.1, 3Ghz Quad Core.  It will run for about 30 to 40 minutes then automatically reboot it self.  I got it from someone else who told me about the problem, and I am trying to see if I can fix it.  When they gave it too me it was already booted up with Leopard, and a bunch of other programs.  It would stay on for about 30mins then cut off.  I wiped the hardrive, so I could do a fresh install of Snow Leopard.  It wiped fine, but when installing Snow Leopard it would get half way through and shut off.
I reset the ram, and even switched the ram out and the same problem.  I read that it might be the power that I plug in to, and I have tried different outlets and the same thing.  I am not sure what the problem is or what too do next.  I did pull the ram out, and it ran fine for about two hours.  Ofcourse there was nothing I could do without the ram in it, but it makes me think it is the ram, but I am not sure what else to do, as I have 32gigs of Ram, and I know not all the sticks are bad.  Is it possible the tray that the ram is in, can go bad?
If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

There are two things that I can think of that might make the Mac Pro suddenly shut down, then immediately restart.
    1) Power cord. The Mac Pro standard power cord (if you are still using that cord) has a large square block of rubbery material around the computer end. This can make it more difficult than usual to fully seat the cord in the computer socket. A loose connection here could cause the behavior you describe, and would not leave a trace.
    2) Overheating. This can also make  a Mac Pro shut down suddenly. But in this case, i would expect that the shutdown reason would be in the log.
Regardless, there may be some logs of kernel panics or similar problems. Here is how to find them, then cut-and-paste a copy here:
Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic

  • My mac mini keeps on restarting

This is a new issue I have been having I did not install anything or do mac upgrades but my mac mini keeps rebooting sometimes like once a day why how to fix?

If the original poster has an Intel Mini, he/she should definitely NOT do a PMU reset procedure on it! Intel Minis should get the SMC reset instead, because they don't have Power Management Units.
The Intel Mini's SMC reset procedure is described at the very end of this document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US
Applying the PMU reset procedure to an Intel Mini will usually cause the FAN to run full speed -- and apparently can cause permanent damage in some cases. The only cheap fix is to apply the correct SMC reset.

  • Why does my Power MAC G4 keep restarting itself after I shut it down?

    Hi,
    Thanks for reading this.
Why does my Power MAC G4 keep restarting itself after I shut it down?
This JUST started happening only 4 days ago.
Most recent installation was Limewire, but I removed it to see if this problem would go away.
I have 3 internal drives (See drive types below) that all have OS 10 on them in order to be able to boot up from either drive in the event of trouble.
    However...
No matter WHICH drive I use as the start up drive... the computer STILL restarts itself after it is properly commanded to shut down.
Prior to the Limewire install... the ADOBE creative suite was installed.
There is a Lexmark X83 printer hooked to the computer, which, it seems doesn't matter if it is left on or off... the computer still restarts itself.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi, Tommy!
If you still have problems, trash the following three preference files, then shut down and do a PMU reset. (PMU reset procedure for the QS is the same as is shown at the link for the Gigabit Ethernet.)

  • My iphone 4S 64gb factory unlocked keep freezing when running especially the music and photo app; and it keep rebooting itself after every total battery drain; i'm on ios 5.1

i upgraded to the ios 5.1; and i realized that each time i have a comple battery drain and the phone goes off; when i connect the iphone to charge; it keeps rebooting itself. And the phone freezes when in the middle of applications; i have to stop the app and start it several times before it works; i have an iphone 4S 64gb factory unlocked

At first drain the battery till the iPhone gets off for many times isnt really a good thing read this:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/
after that I think the only way that will help you is restore the iPhone and the bad news are that you should do it without restore a backup after cause you're problem could be saved in the backup of the phone too so you must manually reinstall apps, preferences etc etc

  • Mac Mini keeps trying to restart

My Mac Mini keeps trying to shut itself down. It does not shut down all the way - but if I leave it to sit for a while I come back to notices asking whether I want to close windows and shut down safari, and if I dont' have any programs that prompt a notification before shutting down I will come back to find that the computer has restarted.
I have checked my power settings and they are totally normal.
    Any other ideas?
I have the same problem on my MacBook Pro, and the Mini is a copy of the MacBook setup so I wonder if it is software rather than hardware (ie a power supply issue).
    Thanks!

your profile suggests you're on Mac OS X 10.6.
if that's the case, you could try if upgrading to 10.6.3 using the _*Mac OS X v10.6.3 combo update*_ fixes your issues.
    other things to try:
_*resetting the System Management Controller SMC*_
_*resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM*_
booting into _*safe mode*_, then rebooting normally.

  • IPhone 3g keeps rebooting itself

yesterday all of a sudden every time i checked my phone i had no signal bars. i figured it was the area i was in. once i left it continued to have no service. i turned it off then back on and since then it keeps rebooting itself. i connected it to itunes to try to restore it and it restores but does not sync. it reboots midway through the process. can anyone help me out?

Well the post says the question is answered - but a quick search on Google for "iphone keeps rebooting" reveals many thousands of people with this problem... including me yesterday!
I seem to have gotten mine fixed... Somehow I managed to get the phone to reboot in recovery mode. This stopped it rebooting, as long as I didn't press the round button. After that, without starting it or pressing ANY buttons I plugged it into my laptop and selected restore. This restores the firmware, but when I tried to then re-sync the songs, it crashed again. I thought it was all over. However... the second time I did indeed manage to re-sync everything - and so far to day, everything seems reasonably stable. Mind you. I have to "reactivate" my phone connection with O2 in the process though... very odd and frankly Apple should be a bit more open about this clearly known issue and tell us what to do... either play around or get straight to a store.

  • My mac-mini keeps crashing when I and watch a movie in itunes. Just auto-updated software, could that be the problem?

My mac mini keeps crashing. I recently updated the software, following apple prompts. Every time I open a movie in itunes, it goes for 5 mins then stops. The mac fan gets really loud and the whole computer crashes. I have to restart, then the same problem occurs! HELP!!!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or freeze, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search that archived log, and if necessary the older ones below it, for the same information.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
