My Mac mini starts up with a black screen and white writing.

Okay basically I purchased a Mac mini (Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8GHZ 1GB RAM model) in Feburay 2008, and in June 2008 i decieded to bring it to a store to get it upgraded to 2GB. At the store the guys told me my Mac mini wouldnt accept 2GB, they reckon it was 'cause of the logic board. So they put a new one in and was able to succesfully install 2GB.
Since that day my Mac mini stopped starting up with the apple logo. Now it starts up with the white/greyish background without the apple logo, then goes to a black screen and just runs pass loads of white text then its ready to use with no problems. It does this all the time.
I've read a little about the Kernal Panic and looked at pictures of it, but what I have doesn't look like the kernal panic pictures i'm seeing.
So i am writing this pose to find out whats wrong with my Mac mini, can anyone help me?
Oh, I nearly forgot. When i turn the Mac mini off it does the same black screen with white text stuff before fully shutting down.

Restart the computer with the Option, Command, P, and R keys held down, and release them when you hear the second startup chime; this clears a setting which causes it to start up into verbose mode each time.

I installed Mountain Lion in my IMac and now, some times, when I start up my mac it looks with a black screen and white text. I'm really worry about it, can somebody help me?

Don't worry, this is probably just Verbose Mode. It's perfectly harmless.  If you're not specifically invoking it, than it's probably down to an unwanted setting in NVRAM.  See this article on resetting NVRAM if it continues to bother you.

  • I just loaded the 8.1 operating system on my iPad.  It has been sitting for about 4 hours with the black screen and white apple with the bar underneath.  What should I do?

I am having trouble after loading the 8.1 operating system on my ipad.

I started loading 8.1 about 5 hours ago and it is still sitting with the black screen with the progress bar underneath.  It shows that it is almost done loading - just has a tiny bit of the progress bar left.

I Don't know if this will work for anyone else but just FYI - after loading 8.1 on my iPad it froze for several hours on the black screen with white Apple and progress bar underneath. It would not do anything.  I thought I was doomed.  I accidentay left it sitting overnight without plugging it Back into the charger. I meant to but got sidetracked and thought it was plugged in. During the night the battery was totally drained so this morning my iPad was dead. I plugged it into the charger and after a few minutes the battery icon came up showing it was charging. I gave it about 30 minutes and then turned it on and the new operating system came up. It looks like it might be ok now.  I can't say I recommend this, but it worked for me.

Will not show up in safe mode, will not show when started from Windows 7 DVD.
I suspect the Mac update wiped out my PC video drivers but can not think of a way to re-install?
Can see the PC volume from Mac side with files.
I've looked at all the online solutions so far and have tried most of them without success. Please help!

    EDIT: RESOLVED
For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!

Try f8 and try the repair your computer options
This explains advanced start up options:

    This explains start up repair:

A system disc can be used for these repair options also, in your case if the DVD drive is not working you can use an external dvd drive if you have one.

  • New mac Mini 2011/lion Windows 7 black screen at installation

    Hi,
I'm switching to Mac and finally got the new mini i5 2.5Ghz and I'm trying to install W7 professional.
I'm using an external USB dvd r/w unit (a samsung)
In bootcamp i was able to create the driver disk and repartition the existing hard drive in two halfs of 256GB each
But when bootcamp assistant restarts the mini in order to boot from the windows installation disc, I just get a black screen and the W7 installer does not boot,
At that point neither the 32 nor the 64 bit version of W7 boots. The screen simply remains black.
I can boot from the os x partition (keeping the option key pressed unitl the boot disk selection cames out), and Lion works, but any attempt to boot from the dvdrom with w7 fails.
Anyone else encountered this issue and can help ?
    Thanks!

    Go to http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst118DriverPreview.aspx
and install the ATI 11.8 preview drivers.
Once installed, open the catalyst Control center (you should have a red icon in the notification tray)
and in one of the settings there is an "overscan" setting.
you should see a slider, position it to "0%" and you should have full screen.
For some reason the overscan defautl setting is set at -15%, hence the black bars.
I spent quite a lot of time on this, mainly because the bootcamp ATI drivers did not have any setting page I could find. I then installedd the official 11.7 drivers, but I could not get the Catalist Control Center to show up, not sure why.
Finally after reading forums for hours I gave the 11.8 a try, as it seems thare are some improvements (but mostly performances) for the HD 6xxx graphics cards, then finally it worked and i could access the overscan settings.
You may want to try first to see if you have the overscan setting before installing any new drivers.
    Hope this helps

It seems as though quite a few files are missing, though the yaourt built the application just fine.

I had the same issue with the git version. Install the stable version and it should work fine

  • 2006 Intel Mac mini starts to load then turns off and sometime a kernel panic warning will appear

Mac mini starts then powers off before loading osx and sometimes gives a kernel panic warning

Tough without the Install disc, but some things to try...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).

  • How to start MacAir with frozen blue screen and no light on keyboard?

How do I start my MacAir with frozen blue screen and no light on keyboard?

    Hey 7manya,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing an issue with your MacBook Air frozen on a blue screen. The following resource provides some troubleshooting steps that may help to resolve your issue:
OS X Mavericks: If you see a blue screen at startup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14061
If you see a blank blue screen or a blue screen with a colored pinwheel when you try to start your Mac, but starting up doesn’t progress, you may have a problem with damaged or incompatible startup items or software.
    - If you are starting up from a DVD, it must be a disc that came with your Mac or OS X retail package. Discs from other Mac models may not work with your Mac.
    - Restart your Mac in safe mode. If the Mac successfully starts up in safe mode, choose Apple menu > Restart to see whether the Mac will restart normally.
    Start up in safe mode
    - If you see the login window prompting you for a user name and password, but starting up doesn't progress, you may have incompatible login items.
If you think you have incompatible login items
    - Repair your startup disk or disk permissions using Disk Utility.
    Repair a disk
    - Back up your disk, then reinstall OS X.
    Reinstall OS X
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • I tried to update my ipad software whilst connected to my computer. There was an error and now my ipad is frozen with a black screen and a white apple. it will not even power up. Help

I connected my ipad to my laptop in the hopes of dowloading some photos i needed. It invited me to back up my data and update to ios 7.0.6. After 2 hours to download the software it then tried to install it and encountered an error. The ipad is now frozen to a black screen and the apple symbol. i cannot even power it off. What on earth can I do?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Mac Mini / Boot Camp / XP Pro / Black Screen with DVI display

Boot camp partitioned the hard drive on my new Mac Mini and restarted after I clicked Start Installation, but came up to a black screen. No blue installation screen, nothing.
I downed it with the power button and unhooked the display from the DVI port. I went and got a VGA cable instead and hooked it up via the DVI/VGA adapter and started up again with the Option key. Chose the Windows XP Pro SP2 installation CD and it went through the Windows installation OK.
The trouble is this Norwood Micro HD17A (17" widescreen) looks TERRIBLE on VGA whether I run Windows or Mac OS, because there's no selection for 1280 x 768 resolution. It looks great on DVI both on Mac OS and in Windows once I get XP Pro to load.
After logging in to Windows I can unhook the VGA cable and adapter and reconnect the monitor using the DVI. The moment I do this Windows looks great, with native resolution supported and everything's fine. But this is a terribly cumbersome login procedure!
It seems that XP Pro has no trouble communicating with this display, provided I can get Windows to load. I contacted Apple Support but they say it's a problem with Windows, so I submitted a support request to Microsoft. I'm waiting for them to tell me it's a problem with Boot Camp or the firmware.
I've seen descriptions of very similar problems on other forums (123macmin.com) and here, but no solutions anywhere. Anybody know what's happening here?

Update: Microsoft says it's probably a problem with the hardware:
    ==========================================
Mark, I would like to explain that the issue should be related to the display card driver. We still need to contact the Apple support to verify if their machine has been tested under the XP environment when DVI or AVG is in use. This issue is related to Hardware and cannot be resolved from a Windows XP standpoint. Our Windows XP Support Team deals mainly with issues related to the Windows XP Operating System. Thus, we are not the best resource for this issue.
Please understand the problem may be beyond our support boundary and, therefore, our help to troubleshoot this issue is limited. Let’s contact the manufacturer who will be more familiar with their products. To contact them, please access the following link:

Meanwhile I sent Redmond the System Information in an NFO file. More as this develops!

  • Mac Mini + DVI- HDMI + Toshiba 42RV530U = black screen

Hi all, I have a new Intel Mac Mini 2GHz and a Toshiba 42RV530U REGZA HDTV that I'm trying to connect, with only a black screen so far.
I believe the DVI output on the Mini is working - I can at least get a picture with a DVI-S-Video cable, but it's obviously lower resolution. The DVI-HDMI cable works - I tried it on our cable box.
When the DVI-HDMI cable is hooked up to the HDMI-1 input on the TV, the "No Signal" warning vanishes, but it's replaced by a black screen. No amount of fiddling with SwitchResX has worked so far.
I've tried coming up with values for SwitchResX based on these numbers from the manual (don't know why the H Freq and V Freq give 2 values for each). I couldn't get exact values, but pretty close. I'd ideally like to get 1080p working.
Name Resolution Vert Freq Horizontal Freq Pixel Clock
    480i 720 × 480i 59.940/60Hz 15.734/15.750kHz 27.000/27.027MHz
    480p 720 × 480p 59.940/60Hz 31.469/31.500kHz 27.000/27.027MHz
    720p 1280 × 720p 59.940/60Hz 44.955/45.000kHz 74.176/74.250MHz
    1080i 1920 × 1080i 59.940/60Hz 33.716/33.750kHz 74.176/74.250MHz
    1080p 1920 × 1080p 23.976/24Hz 26.973/27.000kHz 74.176/74.250MHz
    1080p 1920 × 1080p 59.940/60Hz 67.433/67.500kHz 148.352/148.500MHz
I've also tried repairing permissions, rebooting many times, deleting the windowserver.plist files, zapping the PRAM, etc. SwitchResX identifies the TV as "TSB-TV", which sounds the same as other posts with different Toshiba TVs. I'm able to remote into the Mini via Remote Desktop Connection to play with settings, etc.
Any suggestions? Would a DVI to Component cable work? The TV does have an analog RGB in, but this won't support high def. Thanks for any help!
    -Frank

An unforeseen twist... I tried hooking up the Mac Mini to a DVI computer monitor, also with no picture. When I hook up my Powerbook to the Toshiba via the DVI->HDMI cable.... Picture! So, looks like my new (refurbed) Mac Mini has a bad digital video output. Seems a little strange though, since the analog video output on it is working fine.
Off to the Mac store tomorrow.

  • My display starts up with a black screen or fades to black after being on.

So just recently when I would turn my mac on, it starts up with just a black screen. The computer is on just no display. Sometimes it will take multiple times of restarting the computer to get the display to come on. When the display is finally on and working fine I found out that if I touch the top of the iMac near the iSight the screen will then slowly fade to black. And of course, the only fix is to restart. Anyone have a similar problem? Unfortunately I didn't purchase the extended warranty and my computer is one month past the 1 year mark. Thank you.

Restart the computer with the Option, Command, P, and R keys held down, and release them when you hear the second startup chime; this clears a setting which causes it to start up into verbose mode each time.

  • Imac starts with a black screen and flashing white light on console

I have a 24" imac, it is white and it is from the first year they used the intel chip. When I power it up I get a black blank screen and then the white light on the lower right side of the console flashes on and off. I hear the disk drive spin (I put the 10.4 install disk in ) and it does nothing. How do I get the disk out. I even tried holding down the mouse button at start up and that doesn't work.
I tried to remedy this myself by resetting pram. I have taken out memory and put it back in. I have been able to get it running twice before by taking out memory and putting it back in but it only worked for a little while and then I turned it off and went to turn it back on and same problem again. Is this a logic board problem or something else. I think I read if it was the logic board the disk drive wouldn't work but I hear it spinning.
    Can anyone help me?

    Hi MacGruff69
That has all the classic signs of unseated, improperly seated or bad RAM.
Laying the iMac face down on a soft towel and reseat the module(s) by pressing real hard on each one with both thumbs, then closing the ejector clips and replacing the cover.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1432
Them if the iMac still has the same symptoms, try one module at a time or replace the module(s) with new one(s).

  • Mac Mini file server with 10.5.8 and folder permissions

Our office has a Mac Mini we use as a file server.  We each connect over our network with a common user.  All of the folders we use are on the root.  When one creates a subfolder, the permissions on the new folder are read only.  One has to go on to the mini and reset the permissions rw- for 'everyone' then all is well.  Is there a way to create a user which we would use to connect from our own mac that will be allowed to create folders with rw- permissions?

If you are using the Go menu "Connect to Server" and logging in with a generic Server User-name and password, the permissions of any files you create should be those of the Server User with which you logged in.
If you are just clicking on a sidebar item and using the Finder WITHOUT logging in as a unique User on the Server, the files you create will be owned by the Creator (not the generic Server User) and follow the Creator's permissions.
I find I am sometimes already connected as a guest, and the login dialog does not come up. If I want specific permissions on the Server, I need to eject the Server drive and Connect to Server again. This time I get the login dialog and can enter the username I desire.
