My Mac needs help!

I am running on OS 10.4 something. When I start my mac, I get the flashing question mark in the folder. I did disk utility and I get the following messages:
Verify: Invalid B-tree node size, the volume needs to be repaired
Repair: Error the underlying task reported a failure on exit. 1 volume could not be repaired.
What do I do now? Thanks!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First thing to try is run Disk Utility again. Occasionally an error of this sort doesn't get fixed rthe first time round, but might on the second.
In the likely event that does not help however, then it means there is an error with the data structure on the drive which disk utility cannot repair. It also means the data you have on the drive is vulnerable, since the system can't work out where it is. In that instance, you really only have two options: the first is to buy a copy of a utility such as Alsoft's DiskWarrior, and attempt to repair the data damage with that, or to reformat the drive and reinstall MacOS. The process of reformatting clears the data and writes a new structure, but of course it also wipes your data, so should only be done if you have a backup, or can afford to loose the data already saved.
These types of errors most commonly occur when power is cut while the drive is actively in use. If you have not cut power after something like a crash by holding the power button in until the system turns off, it might indicate power variations in your location, and that it could be wise to invest in a surge-protected UPS if you have not already got one.

  • New iPad 3 will not charge from a mac. need help on that

my new ipad 3 will not charge from a mac. need help why if any one knows? thk

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • IPhoto crashing mac need help!!!

I recently got a 2010 macbok pro 15" with i7 dual core processor i have been using iphoto since i got it but now iphoto is crashing my computer allowing me to do nothing but restart it with the power button. I need help please i have reinstalled the software nothing works any help would be greatly appreciated.

Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and try to create a new, test library. If you can then we know the problem is with your current library.
If that's the case make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library the apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file,, Cache.dbt, that is located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If that doesn't help try the following: make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • New to Mac - Need help - Want to share Printer and Internet with PC

Looking for help in setting up to share my Windows Compaq PC printer and files and internet with my MAC Mini. They sit right next to each other, my PC does not have wireless ability. What equipment and what steps do I need to take to make this happen? I am looking for the cheapest way possible.
    Thanks

To share the internet you are going to need the means the connect both the Mac and PC to your internet connection. A router would be the simplest - connect your broadband modem to the router and the computers to the router. Routers are quite inexpensive these days and it is also needed to share a printer with both computers.
This leads us to the printer. Before you think about sharing the printer with the Mac you'll first need to determine the printer has drivers for OS X. If not, there's no easy way to seamlessly print from the Mac to your printer. Note I say seamless. Since all Mac applications can print a PDF file you can print the PDF, transfer the file to your PC, and then print the PDF in Windows.

  • PSE 12: Mac need help opening RAW files

I downloaded the trial version of PSE 12 on a Mac OS X v 10.8.5 and I am unable to open the CR2 RAW files taken by a Canon EOS Rebel XS and loaded directly to the Mac.
The exact error message is, "Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. Please visit the Camera Raw help documentation for additional information."
The Camera Raw plug in version on this PSE 12 is 8.2.0.94
In an effort to open these CR2 files, I downloaded the DNG Converter 8_2. This provided a similar error, "The source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files."
I believe that my camera is supported by PSE12 :
I plugged an external hard drive into the Mac which contains CR2 files from the exact same camera. The files were unloaded using a Windows PC and then saved on the hard drive. They open on the Mac using PSE12. No problem.
So, I am guessing that the problem is that I am a new Mac user. I have no idea where I should look on the Mac to figure out why the CR2 files directly loaded to the Mac won't open in PSE12 but files loaded to a WIndows computer and then opened on the Mac will open in PSE12.
    Any suggestions?

Barbara B--thank you so much for trying to help me.
I finally have success! I discovered that I must use the Canon EOS Utility to download the files to the Mac. Not iphoto and not the Image Capture.
For anyone else who might need a link to the Canon Rebel XS EOS Utility, I found it here:

  • Installation of Older FCP on New Mac - Need Help

    Hi. Help.
I just got a new Mac. I have an older version of FCP - it is 4.5 aka HD.
My problem is that my 4.5 is an upgrade. I first got FCP when it was 1.2.5. Then I upgraded to 3, then 4.5.
To install 4.5 on my new Mac (with Leopard 10.5), I have to install the previous versions first, then the upgrades.
Guess what? I can't install the original 1.2.5, since there is no trace of Classic.
I am not going to go out and buy a full brand new version of FCP, when I am eligible for upgrades.
Is there a way that I can get Classic on my new Mac, even though I have 10.5?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Mike,
By new Mac do you mean an new Intel machine or a used PowerPC machine?
If you really mean a new Mac then you need to upgrade your version of FCP. FCP 4.5 is PowerPC based and is not supported on Intel machines. You need a Universal Binary version. The first UB version was 5.1 and it was available during the Intel switch as a Crossgrade, it is no longer available. You can purchase an upgrade for FCP though as long as you have the original serial numbers you do not need to install the old version first.

  • CS4 Problem on Mac - Need Help

I was working on a few Illustrator files when the electricity in our building went out. My iMac computer restarted automatically, but all the apps that were open closed. I went to reopen the Illustrator files that I was working on before the power outage and Illustrator will not open any Illustrator file. The app quits before opening any given file - this is also happening with my CS4 version of Photoshop. I have not checked the other apps that are included in CS4, but I am sure that they will react the same. I opened these same files on a different computer with CS4 Illustrator version and they opened with no problems. I also ran a diagnostic test (TechTool Deluxe and Disk Warrior) on my computer and all seems to be functioning properly. It looks like the problems with CS4 are isolated to my computer. I believe that all other (non CS4) apps are working fine.
I ended up uninstalling all the Adobe CS4 apps, then I reinstalled them. I tried to open both Illustrator and Photoshop files and both apps still quit before opening any file. Both Acrobat and Media Encoder seem to be working fine. These apps open and also seem to be working correctly... CS4: InDesign, Media Player, Flash, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Device Central, Bridge.
I don't know what else to do, and Illustrator is something I must be able to use every day.
In case this helps, here's the error message I get when I try to open an Illustrator file:

  • Hey new to Macs need help getting one(s) running again...

    Hey all,
So I acquired some old Macs from a local schools surplus sale. I have managed to get one operational (a G3 tower) but am now trying to get a MacBook running and have had a few issues. I have gotten it to the flashing folder screen but have been unable to get it to boot from the HDD. The HDD drive works I have installed OSX 10.3 on the drive via firewire but it seems that the Mac wont recognize that the drive is there. When I get into the Startup Manager screen nothing shows up except the mouse (which I can move around). The MacBook is an a1181 with 1GB of Ram installed. Being new to Macs I have no clue on how to continue. I know Macs do not have a BIOS but is there something similar that can be accessed? What about Firmware updating? I would prefer not to have to take it (and others) to the local Apple store. Any and all help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I have the same MacBook (a1181) and had the same problem. My solution was to simply re-install snow leopard. Just buy a snow leopard CD from the apple store. Don't buy a mountian lion CD because it is not compatible with your MacBook. One you have the SL CD, insert it into the optical drive (CD drive) and boot the computer. When you hear the chime, press and hold down "C" on the keyboard and it should boot. If this fails, reboot and brews and hold option/alt when you hearths chime, then select the CD as it appears. Then simply install snow leopard, and enjoy your Mac! Hope this helps, and I will be happy to help with any problems or questions :)

  • New to mac need help on cleaning mac system

Hello guys i am new to the mac i got it yesterday and i am so use to a pc...so i have some questions
i want to know how i can clean my mac? (the system not the outside)
how to clean out the internet history etc.( i know on my pc i had these one click apps. that i just open and it would clean my computer out such as the internet history, Cookies etc. and it would clean up left over files that are left from software that i have uninstall is there a software like that for the mac?
oh this is the new macBook pro the 09 and its the 13inc. 4gb
    Thanks

    Hello Candy:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
A Mac running OS X needs no "cleaning." For example, OS X "defrags" files of less than 20 MB on the fly. Routine cache cleaning, etc, is done in the background as long as your computer is either on or sleeping. Let your Macbook Pro sleep so that the background tasks will run once you wake it up.
_DO NOT_ trash system files or indiscriminately clear cache files (that will make the Mac run slower).
At the risk of being pedantic, do not worry about maintenance tasks for a Mac running OS X.

  • New to MAC  NEED HELP

Hey guys, thanks for reading....I woke up this morning and my itunes library was gone. Also, I know in a windows os, when you have anything stored on a seperate drive, a media player only plays those tracks. My itunes wants to copy everything to the os hard drive and there isn't enough room to do so? Can I configure itunes to just play the library and not try to copy everything to the OS hard drive? Also, how do I uninstall applications to clear up space? Any help will be greatly appreciated, again, I am totally new to mac OS.... Running OS X Tiger 10.4

Hi Solomon, and a warm welcome to the forums!
In iTunes>Preferences>Advanced tab you can set the iTunes folder location to an external or other location.
Also, how do I uninstall applications to clear up space?
Applications really won't clear up enough space, DVDs & Movies & such are the big users... my Applications & Utilities folders, (400+ APP & Utils), takes up lees than 4 DVDs.
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?

  • Newbie to Mac Needs Help Please - Very Frustrated

Hello. I'm new to Mac. I'm pretty well versed in Windows and pretty technically savvy so this is frustrating. I cannot get my MacBook with OS X 10.4.8 to print on my new HP 1020. Both are new. It never even occurred to me that the Mac wouldn't be able to talk to it and neither sales person asked about the other. Any work-arounds? Mac appears to recognize it...finds its name and all that...and any/all apps appear to "print" but nothing happens...no printing occurs. I know the printer works; works with my old Dell. Please help. Thank you.

It's my understanding that if you go to hp website and get the drivers for the HP1022 printer that will work. If it doesn't DO THE BELOW STEPS:
If you aren't already on OSX 10.4.8, upgrade now and then follow these steps:
    For The MacBook:
    1) Disconnect the HP 1020 if it is currently connected to the MacBook.
    2 Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ1022_SeriesOSX.dmg (Old version)
    2) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility"
    3) If you have anything for the HP 1020 (or the 1022 from a failed installation) in "/Library/Reciepts" delete it.
    4) Remove the 1020Series folder from "/Library/Printers/hp/laserjet" directory if it exists.
    5) Reset the print system from the Printer Setup Utility
    6) Reboot (the HP 1020 is still disconnected from the MacBook)
    7) Run the installer package downloaded in step 2
    8) Shut down the MacBook completely
    9) While the MacBook is off, connect the HP 1020 and power the PRINTER on.
    10) Power on the MacBook
    11) Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD

  • Newbie to mac need help

Let me preface by saying I'm completely new to the world of mac, I got an emac 1ghz for $50, I don't have an apple keyboard I'm using a regular windows based keyboard by that I mean I don't have any apple keys on my keyboard. Here's my problem, I can't see the Super drive on the desktop or on the side tab when I use finder. I put in the World of Warcraft dvd thinking it would just auto launch and it doesn't. I don't know how to go into the drive and run it and I cant find it anywhere. When I got to system profiler I can see it says I have one and I managed to put a little eject button on the top by the clock, but whenever I put a disk in regardless of the format I can never find it. I'm having a real hard time using the forums because I don't know how to navigate through mac OS and the lack of the apple keyboard doesn't make things any easier. I'm completely proficient in windows and I really want to give mac a shot but I'm finding it incredibly hard to make the transition, can anyone help?

Make sure you are using a Mac version of World of Warcraft, otherwise your computer will not play it. Also, Macs rarely use autorun on games and applications. You may experience trouble using a Mac on a day-to-day basis without a Macintosh keyboard, as Windows keyboards do not have 'eject' keys, or keys for Expose or the Dashboard. If you are completely new to Mac I suggest you take a look at http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/ and watch all the tutorials. You have not specified which version of Mac OS you use.

  • Windows to Mac, Need Help!

So I've been a Windows guy all my life. Recently, upon using Mac lately via friend's laptops and desktops.... I've really kind of started to like Mac. I used to own a Macbook Pro 3 years ago, sold to make a down payment on my first car.
I produce music, so I'd need the Window's aspect of that for the laptop.
Though I'm also a student and am always away from home. So something on the go is what I'd like to have as well.
How is using both Mac and Windows on a Macbook?

    >How is using both Mac and Windows on a Macbook?<
Not a problem. Actually works quite well. My daughter runs 10.9.X on her iMac and Win 7 via Bootcamp.
She uses Win 7 because of Sai ( a manga drawing program) and she also plays Maple Story with my son who's on his multi core PC machine.
She prefers the Mac environment for general browsing, homework etc.
