My mac not using inactive memory

Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro, early 2011 version 10.6.8 / 2GHz Intel Core i7.
I had 4GB RAM originally but upgraded to 8GB.
I started having heat-up / fan issue about 3 months ago and brought my mac to apple store but it didn't solve any problem, so I tried upgrading the RAM. (My mac would heat-up and fan goes crazy much more often than before) It still didn't solve the problem. I have ADOBE products and use them often. 4GB to 8GB upgrade didn't make much difference.
I am kind of giving up with this issue, and am trying not to care... Today, I opened my mac, opened ADOBE Bridge and FireFox. When I was using ADOBE Bridge, the fan was going crazy, so I opened up the activity monitor and realized "INACTIVE" memory is very high and there was only like 10MB of free memory. From my understanding, I thought whenever more free space is needed, "INACTIVE" memory will be used, but my mac seems like it does not want to use the "INACTIVE" memory. Even after completely closing both ADOBE Bridge and FireFox by selecting QUIT, the "INACTIVE" memory is still over 5GB. All I did after opening my mac (not from sleep mode, but it was shut down before opening) was using ADOBE Bridge and FireFox. I closed both of the applications and the "INACTIVE" memory is still very high. Could anybody explain why this is happening and if this is normal? I attached a screenshot of the activity monitor I made when I was only using FireFox after quitting ADOBE Bridge. Thanks for your help!

Hello fmomade,
Some older video and software still requires an older version of QuickTime (version 7) that isn't included with Mountain Lion. It can, however, be downloaded and installed here.
Installing QuickTime Player 7
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3678
A Mac OS X v10.6, OS X Lion, and OS X Mountain Lion-compatible version of QuickTime Player 7 is available for use with older media or with AppleScript-based workflows. QuickTime Player 7 can be used to playback formats such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime Movies, and MIDI files. Also, it supports QuickTime 7 Pro registration codes for access to QuickTime Pro functionality.
To install QuickTime Player 7 on OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion
Download QuickTime Player 7 from here.
Double-click "QuickTimePlayer7.6.6_SnowLeopard". Note: This download is compatible with Mac OS X v10.6 or later.
QuickTime Player 7 will be installed in your Utilities folder.
Cheers,
Allen

When i'm playing Team Forchrease 2 I get about 80 to 100 Frams/sec(FPS), but the problem is every few seconds it dips down to 10~20 FPS which makes it very jittery.
I noticed that while the game is running there is almost no free memory but there is 1GB of ram tied up in "inactive memory" which I thought would be used by anything that needed it.  Now i'm not sure if the game has enough ram and something else is cassing the problem... but I think i have a 1/2 decent graphics card and set up and I don't think I should have this much problems running at the lowest graphics seatting.
Any insight to this problem of the low FPS and why TF2 only uses 1 GB of memory that would be a great help!  Thanks

Not video. You have 256MB VRAM for video, which is rather low for today's video needs. I believe that is the issue.

Is there a way to hibernate tab groups so that they do not use RAM memory? I have a lot of tabs open and have organized them into tabgroups but my computer still uses a lot of the RAM on mozilla. Can I hibernate some of the tabgroups in any way?

There was a bug filed in 2010, but it seems like it's halted.

    Hi TE8762,
I would like to help you with the symptoms your printer is experiencing. What model is it? Finding Your HP Product Model Number.
While I wait to hear back from you, please ensure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet and perform a power reset. To perform a power reset, leave the printer on and unplug the power cable. Leave the printer unplugged for at least 1 full minute then reconnect the power cable.
This alone may resolve the issue, if not let me now which printer it is and we can go from there. Thanks.

  • MBP not using all memory while rendering video

    Hey,
When I do rendering in Adobe Premiere Por CS6, my Mac is not using all the available RAM: 2773 MB used....5416 MB free
    Memory Pages:
                                  1658 MB active....1099 MB wired
                                  5420 MB inactive....11.2 MB free
it also says that:       3 swap files at peak usage
256 MB total swap space (20 MB used)
350 GB free storage space( total 750 GB)
    I have a MBP (OS x Lion) late 2011 with i7 2.8 GHz and 8 GB RAM
Adobe Premiere Pro is set to use 6.5 GB of RAM but not even while working in the programme it has ever used that much of memory.
During rendering, it is the only app running, except for Google Chrome.
If this info is not enough, just ask what do you need to know...
    PLEASE HELP, rendering takes forever.
    Thanks,
      kund

You never said what model Mac you have. Since this is the MacBook Pro forum, I assume you have some version of the MBP. 390% CPU would indicate CPU-boundedness for a quad-core CPU without active hyperthreading, or a dual-core CPU with hyperthreading active.
Given the high CPU usage and the low swap usage, it seems unlikely that memory usage is the problem, but I'm not a Premiere Pro user, so I couldn't guess what it.
You might try posting your question in an Adobe forum for Premiere Pro.

  • AE CS5 not using all memory and cpu

I am using After Effects CS5, wondering why the rendering is not using my CPU and memory full. It`s using only 15 % of memory and sometimes up to 50 % of CPU. What can I do to make it use better my hardware.
The current rendering is chroma key using Keylight.
I understand it can`t use all the hardware, but why only 15 %, because everybody is talking that you need a lot of RAM for AE.
CPU: Intel Core i7 920 - overclocked to 3.4 GHz
    MEMORY: 6 GB DDR3
    GRAPHIC: nVidia GTX 285

Not all rendering operations will max out all RAM and all CPUs (processor cores). Some rendering operations are I/O intensive; some are memory-intensive; some are CPU-intensive. If, for example, I/O is the bottleneck, then you won't see either CPU or RAM usage maxed.
Also, the goal isn't to see that 100% of the CPU and 100% of of RAM is being used. The goal is faster rendering (and other operations). Sometimes greatest performance is achieved when there's "headroom" left over for other activity. See this page.
Are you using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing? That is one feature that really benefits from having a lot of RAM. The 6GB of RAM that you have in your system is not enough to make effective use of that feature. See this page.
Here's a page that collects information about how to optimize for performance.

  • Make a PDF with a Mac, NOT using Mac PDF maker

I am suffering from blurry text when making a PDF in Mac OS 10.6 (using "Save as PDF" in the Mac printing dialogue).
The software company has confirmed the problem. They suggested using CutePDF to make a PDF because it does a better job. CutePDF is Windows only.

Also, could it be a problem with the software you are using (you didn't mention what it is?)
It is ViaCAD 2D. My text is razor-sharp when viewed from within ViaCAD. However, when I make a PDF of my drawing using, File > Print > Print PDF my text comes out blurry.
    http://www.punchcad.com/p-6-viacad-2d3d.aspx
    From the ViaCAD Fourm:
"This is an old and contentious issue that appears to effect some Mac users and not others.
The only work around I have found is to print to EPS (Postscript) in the print dialog, and then convert the EPS to PDF in Preview. Sadly the EPS output from the print dialog is also broken in that it will not support anything larger than 8.5 X 11, so that will not work for you.
The other work around might be to try and export the whole drawing to Illustrator using the File / Export dialog, but again that is also sometimes buggy for some people. The only good news is that the output that appears blurry on your Mac will probably look fine on a PC, or even another Mac as this does appear to be a very system dependent bug (which is why it never gets fixed)."

  • More problems with securityd -- pegging CPU, not using much memory

Well, I'm at my wits end with this one. I'm going to probably have to do a very painful system restore tomorrow night if I can't come up with a solution.
The infamous 'securityd' process is at it again, this time it's pegging my CPU. It differs from other common problems in that it's hardly using any RAM at all (approx. 290KB)! Regardless, one of my CPU cores is maxed out dealing with it, and if I use the System Monitor to display information, the amount of Unix System Calls is rising at a laughable rate.
I've tried the common solution to the similar issue of deleting the /var/db/CodeEquivalenceDatabase, however in this case it does nothing. Upon reboot, 'securityd' immediately begins chewing up as much CPU time as it can get its hands on. The only way to stop it from doing so is to forcibly kill the process, which of course breaks functionality with anything that requires authentication.
This is becoming VERY annoying. Does anybody have a solution other than having to perform a System Restore? That's about the only option I have left, and I'm not very happy about it.

Hi - thanks for the quick reply - my router is normally on 24/7 and I have rarely seen it disconnect.  I only ever reboot the router if there is a problem.  It was 'suggested' by BT India after I called them this morning that I should reboot the router but other than moving it to plug into the main socket it hasn't been off since Monday when I logged the fault.
As you say the noise seems high - I wasn't even asked about this when I reported the fault - but it does not get any better if I plug into the master socket so I don't think it is an issue with the internal wiring.
The crux of my post is that:-
1> Support did not seem concerned in investigating WHY the profile dropped but just requested a reset of the profile
2> After the allotted time there has not been an improvement suggesting an underlying cause
3> IP profiles seem to cause more support issues than they resolve
4> How can I get the speed improved without waiting another 63 1/2 hours?

  • Does anyone know how to upload footage from an SDHC to mac not using FCP or imovie?

Does anyone know how to upload footage from an SDHC card on a mac that doesn't involve using Final Cut Pro or iMovie? Those don't have many options for import/encoding settings. They also upload the clips into an enormous file size. I always have to re-export them in MPEG streamclip or Compressor to lower the file size and it's getting annoying. HELP!

If you have 30GB at OS level then please configure the memory correctly...
maximum server memory in mb = 2147483647
minimum server memory in mb = 10240
May be based on the load you can consider using 80% to sql and 20 % to OS or 70% to SQL and 30 % to OS ( but its all based on your SQL and OS usage ).
If your sql is not using more memory then that means sql instance is not performing too many transactions and load is very less.
Check what is running on your server and it will take memory and other resources based on the needs and work load.

  • After Effects is NOT using the full Twelve GB of memory on my Mac Pro late 2013 dual video cards

I would like to know if there is a reason why AE CC12 and CC13 (2014) is not using the full amount of video card memory on my MP late 2013. It's six GB per freaking card I invested in and its not accessing it.
Is there a work around this issue?

Why shouldn't it. When I upgraded to this new Mac Pro late 2013 with its dual video cards. Premier turned into a blasting fast editor. I no longer need to render my edited cuts and the scrubbing of preview and timeline footage is phenomenal. The only performance boost I've seen in AE with this new system is in rendering and I can't even say its double as fast in comparison to Premier or Encoder and its an 8-Core system with 32GB of ram. Everything else is flying.
So again to answer your why should it. I rebuttal with "Why shouldn't it". The other two mentioned programs are using GPU resources to improve performance why is AE so behind the curve.
I'm not the only one asking why. I was in the audience at a Dmala meeting here in LA with Todd Kopriva and Al Mooney previewing AE and Premier 2014.
People kept asking Todd about performance boost in between questions about new features. Todd finally just asked what do you prefer a couple of new features or performance boost. Everyone wanted performance boost over new features. If you think I'm making this up go ask Todd Kopriva.

  • Inactive memory steadily increasing... but I am not even doing anything

These past two or three weeks, my Apple's memory has been getting occupied very quickly, causing my computer to run very slowly, and I have even received a "not enough memory" message. The thing is, I don't use it for any memory-intensive processes. I usually have my browser (Firefox), MS Word, and MS Excel open at the same time. (I would like to have iTunes on too, but I run out of memory!!). I tried Repairing my Disk Permissions because some website said I should -- it temporarily gave me a few hundred MB more of free memory, but did not seem to have a lasting impact. I noticed that Inactive memory was taking up the majority of my memory. My inactive memory creeps up by about 1 MB every 3 seconds, so by the time I finish this message, I may well run out of free memory, even though the only things I have open are Firefox and Activity Monitor.  I also tried running the PURGE command in the terminal, but nothing changed. And of course I tried restarting, but to no avail.
Could it be that I recently installed calibre for my Kindle? Or what else might be going on?  The situation seems to be worse every day. Also, I don't think there is any apple support office or store in the country I live in. I worry that soon my computer will run out of memory before I can even open any applications that might help me fix it!
I have MAC OSX 10.8.5, with a 2.6GHz Intel Core i5 processer, and 4 GB of memory.

I have even received a "not enough memory" message.
What is the exact, complete text of the message?

  • Inactive memory. it's not working properly, how do i tweak the system to fix it?

    hi.
my system has 24 gigabytes of ram. I use After effects and photoshop and illustrator... all day, every day, going back over 10 years.
when I run a particularly big project in AE, one that uses big fies, or a lot of files, the inactive ram very quickly balloons out of control.
prime example: I am rendering right now, it takes about 12 minutes to render the comp, in 12 minutes the system will go from zero megabytes of inactive ram, to 17 gigabytes, leaving me with no ram for the system, causing in some severe cases: actual hard crashes. I continually have to monitor and run a "purge" command in the terminal in order to cut that out.
the documentation and general discourse I've read agrees that inactive memory is the same thing as free memory, in that it is available for applications with need to use it. But, it contains potentially useful data that was recently used, and the system would rather give you the free stuff before giving you the inactive stuff.
    here's the problem:
Aftereffects uses this memory, and then frees it. it's full of gibberish, it gets used quickly, and released quickly, and pooled into inactive memory. At this point it should be availible for other apps to use, and it isn't. it is treated as if it is in use. The system can't use it, aftereffects can't use it, no other app can get this ram allocated to it. Inactive memory, becomes terminal memory, memory that is not available for use by the system.
I know there has to be a system default or a setting in the terminal, I can set to make it trigger happy and automatically free up this useless memory.
    what is it?

Inactive memory is the operating system cache.
This cache may contains data which has not been written to disk (called dirty pages).  This is because Mac OS X defers flushing dirty cache data to disk to cut down on contantly starting up idle disks, consuming power, draining laptop batteries, and adding extra wear to solid state disks which have a limited number of writes.
When Mac OS X has lots of inactive memory and the system starts to slow down, this is because now the OS is being forced to write the dirty cached pages to disk before it can give those pages to another applications, or to reuse those pages with the same applciation.
After effects and photoshop and illustrator are very memory intensive apps.
...causing in some severe cases: actual hard crashes.
That is either a hardware problem, or an operating system bug.  You should file a Bug report including your crash dumps to Apple.

The inactive memory may still be part of the After Effects address space, just not in the current process working set.  That is to say, ever so often the operating system will mark pages inactive and see if the process references them again.  If it does, they are put back in the process' working set (quickly because they are still in RAM and it just requies updating some process tables), otherwise they sit in inactive memory.  If they are really part of After Effects address space, then chances are the data in those pages is dirty, and before they can be given to another process the pages have to be written to the /var/vm/swapfile(s).
If After Effects generated this inactive memory by reading files (and only reading), then those pages are clean (not dirty), and can easily be moved to free pages and given to a process as there is no need to write them  back to disk, as the disk has the same values as what is cached.
If After Effects generated this inactive memory by writing data to files, then the pages are dirty and are waiting to be written to disk.  Unless the file has been deleted after the write (such as a scratch file), then the operating system must write the data to disk before it can reuse the inactive pages.  It does not matter if later the file will be deleted, the operating system does not know that, so it cannot give those pages to another process until they have been written to disk.  The except being if and only if, a process is also accessing (reading or writing) that file, then cache starts to pay for itself.
The operating system does not refuse to give inactive memory to other processes, it just has responsibilities to make sure dirty pages are properly moved to stable storage before the pages are reused.  And generally speaking stable storage is slow.  Orders of magnitude slower.
If you want  to control when you the operating system cleans dirty inactive memory, then you may continue to run the 'purge' command.  As long as you are not running it non-stop, and especially if you are using a laptop or solid state disk.
Then again, getting more RAM will allow the operating system to dirty up more RAM before it needs to start flushing to disk.  And replacing your disks with solid state disks (SSDs) will allow the operating system to flush dirty pages much faster when it needs to start cleaning the inactive memory.
