My Mac OS X has completely frozen...

This morning I was on my Mac, just checking facebook etc, I went to shut down all my windows and I then hovered over my finder, and it said it was not responding.  I tried to force quit, and the spinning beach ball appeared.  It's been about an hour since then, force quit is not working at all, and I cannot open the Apple to do a force shut down since the spinning beachball won't let me.  The time is frozen at what it was an hour ago, and the battery life does not seem to b lowering
I'm at a loss of what to do, since all I can do is move around the beach ball.
Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

you can try install a small utility called AppleJack, that will have boot in Single User mode (press the Command and S keys at the gong)
No additional utility is required to boot in SUM (single-user mode). See
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8879.html>
However, IMHO, SUM is only for experienced users; and I should not recommend AppleJack or any similar utilities, and certainly not after one incident as the OP described. Normal boot and disk verify should be adequate; if the incident re-occurs, then Safe Mode may be in order

You can try this and see if it helps at all.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • My iPad 3 has completely frozen up.  2 identical messages appear on the screen: "iCloud Backup  This iPad hasn't been backed up in 2 weeks.  Backups happen when this iPad is plugged in, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi."

I am a novice user of an iPad3.  My iPad is currently frozen.  The only things appearing on the screen are two identical message boxes:
    "iCloud Backup
This iPad hasn't been backed up in 2 weeks.  Backups happen when this iPad is plugged in, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi."
Please help me figure out how to get this resolved, as the device is now totally immobilized.

Have you tried a soft-reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • My 4S phone has completely frozen and will not even shut down.

I was trying to open a video link, and now I just have a black screen with the spinning white circle (which is not spinning). I have tried both pressing and holding the power button to try and force a shut down (nothing happened) and pressing and holding the power and home keys to reset (still nothing).

Force your device into rebooting by holding down the Home and Sleep buttons until the Apple logo appears, then release.  Wait for your lock screen to appear.

  • My iMovies app has completely frozen, how can I fix this?

This happened mid session, tried to re start and sync however the app will not open at all. Please help.

Ok, I called Apple and they walked me through the process of reinstalling through syncing with iTunes (not via deleting the app from the home screen), which was probably done with the hope of saving my data. The data was not recovered (my project was lost) but the app now works.
However... I now have a new problem, which might be the origin of the old problem. If I try exporting the project (and I have been able to send it to iTunes, so I now have a backup of the project on my computer), iMovie inevitably hangs very early in the export process. Mainly it just stays there, but once it gave me an error message. Once this happens, however, iMovie once again stops working and have to close it out through the Quick App Switcher and then restart the iPad. Very frustrating, will try to call Apple again about it.

  • My iPad has completely frozen up. This happened when charging.

My iPad was charging. I unplugged it and turned it on. The iCloud box was on stating that it could not back up iCloud. I am unable to get the unlock button to work or get rid of the iCloud box. Any suggestions?

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Macbook Pro Completely Frozen

    Hi,
i've got a Macbook Pro Intel 2.2, running 10.4.11. The touchpad was acting a little strangely in the last week, and now my computer has completely frozen and is unusable. The keyboard and mouse do nothing, only the power button works to shutdown and start up the computer. I've tried doing an SMC reset but this made no difference. Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Chris

If the computer turns on, you can try to boot in to safe mode by holding down the shift key when you turn it on. If this works, you can then insert the install DVD and boot into it by restarting and holding down the C key. You can then run permissions repair and check the HD. If that all checks out fine, you can restart into hardware test by holding down the "D" key when you restart (with the install dvd in place). Make sure that all peripherals are disconnected. If your hardware test is normal and everything else has done fine, reboot (just to be sure) and then do an "archive and install" from your system dvd.
    Good luck!

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 1T hdd 8GB Ram and ran Maverick without problem...Yosemite installation has me completely frozen, nothing works but the spinning ball...I had to force shutdown last night, and haven't turned it on again...what do you advise?  During installation emptied cache, etc. Backed up using time machine, fortunately.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite

  • My computer has been infected with a Trojan Horse.  It has completely taken over my Mac email account and was sending out malicious email to everyone in my address book.  At the same time it infected my iPhone---I am no longer able to receive or send emai

My computer has been infected by a Trojan Horse.  It has taken over my Mac email account and began sending out malicious emails to everyone in my address book.  I cleared out my MAC address book and began using my AOL email account. It took a few days and then my AOL email account was infected and has now been send out malicious email to all my contacts for over a month.  It has also infected my iPhone--I am no longer able to send or receive emails on my iPhone.  Also, once the Trojan Horse began using my AOL email it completely blocked me from using my MAC account by sending never ending popups asking for my email password to access my MAC email account, but it never accepts my pass word.  The TH has also slowed down everything on my computer.  It's like I am working on an old PC with dial up connection instead of the high speed digital connection that I have.  The little color wheel spins constantly as I wait for sometimes over a minute for a page to pull up.  If it pulls up at all.  I have tried to use the 2 disks that came with my computer to completely remove everything on my computer and then reinstall all the programs, but I am not allowed to sweep my computer clean.  I thought maybe my disks that came with my computer were defective so I called Apple and they sent me 2 new disks.  I am not able able to clear my computer with the 2 new disks either.  I have done this before successfully so it's not something new to me.  I do remember when I believe my computer became infected:  I had googled an unusual sewing term, and I was opening what appeared to be legitimate sites, when all of a sudden a pop up appeared that said that my computer had been infected.  I immediately shut my computer off, but it was too late.  I downloaded a virus program for Mac, and it has never found a virus or problem at all.  I think it is part of this Trojan Horse, but I am unable to delete it from my computer.  It refuses to uninstall.  The Mac Trojan Horse is real and it is terrible.  If anyone has any suggestions for me I would be very appreciative,
    Beth
