My Mac partition has disappeared, now all I see is Windows!

A few months ago, my mac all of a sudden stopped working correctly. It would boot up, show my custom background, all my apps in my dock, and the documents on my desktop... but I couldn't open any apps or access any of my documents. Since I've got an older macbook that works, I have kind of put this on the backburner for fear of destroying it more than it already is. I fear I may have done that tonight.
I have my OS X 10.4.8, OS X 10.5 and OS X 10.6.3 discs.
I started by trying to wipe and reinstall with 10.5, it checked and cleared the disc, but about 10% or so into the wipe an reinstall said the hard drive was messed up and stopped. I tried a handful of times and different ways to get it to allow me to try again to no avail. It kept saying it couldn't install 10.5 because it needed 10.4. So I hopped into the windows partition, popped in my 10.4 disc, and tried again. Then it would tell me that I couldn't install 10.4 on this computer.
After trying both of those, I opted to try my 10.6 disc, it started the install again, then said my hard drive was messed up.
I've tried booting into single user mode, but it's only reading the disc that I have in, not the hard drive. Now when I try, it just reboots into windows. That is all it sees now. When I power on holding down the alt key to choose my partition, Windows is now my only option.
I'd like to wipe and reinstall everything, clearing out the partition and deleting the Windows... but I'm afraid I've maybe gone too far? Any help on this would be great, since I'm completely at a loss of what to do now!

It is pretty much completely ignoring all things mac now, and only booting in Windows. None of the start up prompts (s, c, ctrl + alt, etc) get me anywhere.
ETA: I can access the disks on the windows partition, is there any way to re-install bootcamp or something there?
No.
Reboot, hold the option key down at the sound of the chime, release it when the startup manager appears.
Does the startup manager contain a Mac drive as well as a Windows drive, are there any drives other then the Windows drive showing?

• When using the Pencil Tool I could see an outline of the pixel group - this has disappeared and all I see is the pencil - Why ?

I use the Pencil Tool to modify pictures and drawings in Photoshop Elements. Normally I would see an outline of the pixel group - so for example, if the pencil size was 6 pixels I would see the outline of the six pixels. This allows very accurate poitioning of the tool. All of a sudden these outlines have disappeared and all I can see is a representation of the pencil where the cursor is. This makes positioning rather hit and miss especially if the pixel size is large. What has changed - and how can I return it to the way it was ?

You have "standard" set as your curser preference. To change it Edit<Preferences<Display and Cursors.

Look in your user library/Mail to see if it is there. If not, if your have a backup, try restoring that folder.

• Recovery partition has disappeared

Hi, after installing Mountain Lion the system was running perfectly. But now my recovery partition has disappeared. Is there any way to recover this partition without installing the whole system?
Thx a lot ...

You have no recovery partition. This is a normal condition if your boot volume is a RAID, or if you modified the partition table after running Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows partition. Otherwise, you need to reinstall OS X in order to install a recovery partition.
If you don't have a current backup, you need to make one before you do anything else, unless of course you have no data you want to preserve.
You have several options for reinstalling.
If you have access to a local, unencrypted Time Machine backup volume, and if that volume has a backup of a Mac (not necessarily this one) that was running the same major version of OS X, then you can boot from it into Recovery by holding down the option key at the startup chime. Encrypted Time Machine volumes are not bootable, nor are network backups.
If your Mac shipped with OS X 10.7 or later preinstalled, or if it's one of the computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery, you may be able to netboot from an Apple server by holding down the key combination option-Rat the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.
If your Mac is unable to use Internet Recovery, the simplest solution would be to run Recovery Disk Assistant on another Mac to create a bootable recovery device.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

If none of the above options is available to you, then you'll have to start over from an OS X 10.6.8 installation. There's no need to overwrite your existing boot volume; you can use an external drive. Install 10.6 from the DVD you originally used to upgrade, or that came with the machine. Run Software Update and install all available updates. Log into the App Store with the Apple ID you used to buy 10.7 or later, and download the installer.

• Iphoto has disappeared on all my computers

Ok I did not throw it away on any of my computer systerms. I have 3 macs and iphoto has disappeared on all of them. I plugged in my camera and that when I noticed its missing. On computer the icon is there but in the package is only music. WTH is going on. Is there a mac virus going around or something? Its not possible for this to suddenly happen on all three machines. One is an old MacPro that doesn't even have the latest on it. Did apple get rid of iPhoto? and deleted it without informing me?
I just called a friend and she was shocked to see it disappeared of her computer also
anyone know whats going on?

Who knew that you has upgraded AND done it with an erase and install option - if you don't other to tell us what you have done then we certainly can not guess
You do not have to buy iLife - it came on your computer and you can install it again after the upgrade -
reinstall iPhoto - go to your receipts folder ("Your hard drive" ==> library ==> receipts) and remove any iPhoto receipts and reinstall from the restore disks that came with your computer - do a custom install of bundled software only
For more information click here for the MacWorld article on reinstalling OS X applications.
Or if you do a simple upgrade rather than an erase and install (or even an archive and install) you will not erase your applications
With the way you "upgraded" you had to reinstall all of your applications - including, of course, iLife.

• My Bootcamp Partition has disappear from OSX and its impossible to activate

Hello,
i`m using Bootcamp with Win XP, and now the partition has disappear from the desktop of OSX. When i use the HD-Diagnostic tool i can see the partition as unactivated. Trying to activate is not possible. But the partition seems to be working, because i can still start Win XP when i reboot and hold the "alt" Key. Then i can choose between OSX and WinXP and it goes fine. Is there a way to activate this partition in OSX? Because i want to delete WinXP from my Apple.

Hi
To remove the WinXP partition you have to run Bootcamp Assistant (Application/Utilities) again, it should give you the option to (not sure of exact words)Remove Windows and Return to one partition.
This question should have really been asked in the Boot Camp Public Beta Forum. The first thread in that forum is called Uninstalling Boot Camp but gives the same instructions as I have.

• I erased my HD and could not install lion. if I turn on the mac now all I see is a folder with a question-mark. How can I install a new operation system?

I erased my HD and could not install lion. if I turn on the mac now all I see is a folder with a question-mark. How can I install a new operation system?

Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

I bought an album on my iPhone and it never transferred to my iTunes account. It has disappeared now and I'm not allowed to buy it again. How can I find my missing music album or have the option to purchase it again?

Hello bubblegirl2,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your purchased album.
First, I recommend trying to download the album from you list of past purchases. Use the steps in the section titled "Download previous purchases on Mac or PC > iTunes Store" in the following article:
Download past purchases
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
If you have tried those steps and still do not see the album, it may be that the album is hidden. Follow the steps below in iTunes on your computer to check if it is hidden and unhide it:
To unhide your purchases
Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.
If you're not already signed in, choose Store > Sign in.
Choose Store > View My Account. (You may be asked to enter your password again).
On your Account Information summary, scroll down to the "iTunes in the Cloud" section and click Manage.
Choose a content type by clicking Music, TV shows, Apps, or Books from the top.
Click the Unhide button next to the item you would like to restore.
Note: If the item you are unhiding is not already downloaded on your computer locally, it will begin downloading automatically.

• After downloading OSX Mavericks, my AOL mailbox has disappeared and all the AOL messages get dumped into the inbox along with the gmail messages. How can I get the AOL mailbox back?

After downloading OSX Mavericks, my AOL mailbox has disappeared and all AOL messages have been lumped in the inbox along with my gmail messages. What do I have to do to get my AOL mailbox back?

Linking AOL and gmail? I don't know what that means. But if it means what I think it does - that you have the AOL and gmail servers chatting directly with each other through some configuration, I'd definitely disable that.
In general, the messages either aren't deleted, or aren't correctly deleted, or there's a protocol or network error, or some sort of a mail server error.
First diagnostic is a mailbox repair. Mail.app > Mailbox > Rebuild
Then verify that the credentials are correct and the connection is reliable:
Mail.app > Window > Connection Doctor
And yes, if you have gmail and AOL chatting directly with each other, undo that.

Try:

- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
