My mac powers off when not in use and I must unplug to restart.

My Mac powers of after not being used for a period of time.  I must unplug to restart.

All ATVs go into sleep mode when not in use.
Simply pressing the power button on the remote should wake the device up, is that not occurring?

How long should you leave an ipad mini plugged in to charge? How low should the battery be? Should I power it down when I am not going to be using it for several hours between uses? Thank you. I NEED to know these things.

Charge it when you see the Low Battery Alert. It is not recommended to Fully Discharge the battery.
    Use Your iPad Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

    This is not necessary.

  • Should Wireless Router be turned off when not in use?

I successfully installed the Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router Model WRT54G.  It was very easy.
I notice that it now appears to be "on" all the time, and I use my home PC & Laptop perhaps up to about only 2 hours a day.  Should I be turning it off when not in use?  Is it a potential security risk to always have it on?  If I do turn it off, is the only way to unplug the power adapter?  I can not locate any on/off button on the router.
    Thanks,
    Adam

You said your router was "very easy" to set up.  I hope that this does not mean that you skipped setting up security.  If your wireless router is not secured, having it on or using it is a security risk.  If your router is secured, then it is OK to leave it on 24/7.
If your wireless is not secured, anyone in the area can log into your router and use your DSL line.  At a minimum, this wastes your bandwidth.  At a maximum, someone could send spam, visit child porn sites, distribute viruses, and give away copyrighted music  ---  all from a DSL account with your name on it!    Additionally, if your router is not secured, others can see what you are doing on the net, including seeing your bank account numbers, passwords, and credit card numbers.  So my advice is ... secure your system.
In order to keep intruders off of your wireless system, you need to enable wireless security.  To do this, pick an SSID and don't broadcast it.  Encrypt your wireless system using the highest level of encryption that all of your wireless devices will support.  Common encryption methods are:
WEP - poor  (see note below)
    WPA - good
    WPA2 - best
WPA and WPA2 sometimes come in versions of "personal" and "enterprise".   Most home users should use "personal".  Also, if you have a choice between AES and TKIP, and your wireless equipment is capable of both, choose AES.
The wireless devices (computers, printers, etc.) that you have will need to be set up with the SSID, encryption method, and passwords that match those you entered in the router.
For additional security, on many routers, you can limit wireless access to just the MAC addresses of the wireless devices that you own.  If possible, you should definitely use this feature.
And don't forget to give your router a new login password.
Also, when you pick your login password, SSID, and encryption key (or password or passphrase) you should use a random combination of capital letters, small letters, and numbers.  An SSID, or a login password, should be 12 characters or more.  WPA and WPA2 passwords should be at least 32 characters.
Note below:  Recently the FBI demonstrated that WEP can be broken in under 5 minutes using standard, internet available, cracking tools.  This suggests that virtually all wireless users should upgrade their wireless equipment to WPA or better.

  • Apps wanting to access my location when not in use (and not giving the option to turn it off)

For most apps, I can choose to share my location 1) not at all; 2) when the app is in use (my favourite); 3) always (even when not in use).
Why do some apps not offer the second option?
For instance, I want to use an app that locates the nearest automatic external defibrillator (if someone has a cardiac arrest) but I can only use the app when I allow the app to access my location all the time. Given the fact that I will use this app perhaps only once every 15 years, I see no point in giving them my location for the next 15 years! That's just a waste of battery power and also a breach of my privacy.
Second example: Apple's own weather app. I check the weather maybe once every month. I do not want the app to locate me all the time. But I can only choose between option 1) and 3) above.
Is there a technical reason apps work like this? Or are they just sneakily trying to get as much information about me as possible?
    Thanks for your thoughts.
    PS: I am using iphone 6, iOS8.3

everything rudegar said is right on.  Still, 10% overnight is more than you would expect - so something is still running.  try-
double click the home button, and see what apps are listed as recent.  one or more of them might be still churning away.  it is a good idea to close those out fully every night.  Any of those apps with notifications or location services may be checking in every now and then and using your power.
you mentioned airplane mode is 'off'.  this may be a terminolgy thing - but having airplane mode 'off', means that the radios are on.  WiFi, and 3 G if you have it.    turning airplane mode "on" turns off the radios.
with everything off on mine - (except I leave the wifi on) -  i use 2 or 3% overnight.
But if you really want it off - do what rudegar says.

  • HP Officejet 6500a Should I turn it off when not in use?

Is it better too turn off the printer when not in use for short periods say 2-4 hours? or days? (the manual does not explain this adequately) Thanks

    Hi,
I normally turn my printers off to save few cents of electricity. No point to keep printers on unless you are having/doing business (expecting fax or something). Even at work, for a long weekend, we always turn our printers off.
    Regards.

  • Switch off when not in use or standby?

I dont have an ATV yet, but have lots of questions!
When not being used, is the ATV to be left in standby (consuming what I hope is just a small amount of electricity) or can the power be turned off at the wall socket? Does it lose any settings if I do this? I only have time to watch TV at weekends.

There is a stand by mode but it isn't a very low power mode, if you only use the tv at weekends, I would unplug it in between. I'd usually say don't be unplugging it regularly, but I don't believe once a week is. Personally I'd leave the unit in stand by on Saturday night though.

  • Photoshop 5.1 bombs when not in use and often disables keyboard

I'm using Mac OS X 10.7.2 on an Intel Core 2 Duo IMac. A few months ago I downloaded PhotoShop 5.1 after having used every previous issue of PhotoShop without a problem.
    1. Often when I have Photoshop open on my desktop but not actively using it, it will freeze and I'll have to force quit and restart. When I installed the latest version of InDesign and Illustrator they would also freeze when not in use, however removing and resinstalling them seemed to fix the problem for them, but not for Photoshop.
2.I will be working along on a project when suddenly all of the alphanumerical keys on my keypad won't work. I ultimately have to restart the Mac to get them to work again in any program. This never happens with any other program and I have tried othe keypads, even one just out of the box, and it's always the same.
I have removed and reinstalled Photoshop twice, but still the same issues.
I have called the Adobe helpline and tried all of their fixes, but it still happens. They resolved that it must be my Mac. But Mac says because it is related to a specific software it is not their problem.
    Any ideas?

Thanks for taking the time to respond.
It might be Suitcase 3, because I keep having trouble with it and issues with the FM Core.
I'm also getting this prompt which I don't know how to resolve: "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturer's website for the latest software. GPU enhancements can be enabled in the Performance panel of Preferences. (I couldn't find it in the preferences and not sure who the video card manufacturer is.)
Here is the other software that usually is or may be running at the same time as Photoshop: InDesign 7.5, Illustrator 15.1.0, ITunes 10.5.3, Mail 5.1, Preview 5.5.1, Suitcase Fusion 3 14.2.0, Firefox 9.0.1, Microsoft Word 14.1.4 and Excel 14.1.4; less often: PowerPoint 14.1.4, ICal 5.0.1 and Address Book 6.1
When I first had problems with this install as I mentioned I upgraded my operating software and donwloaded MacKeeper to clean things up. It hasn't helped.

  • Seagate FreeAgent Desk (Mac) turns on when not in use?

    Hi,
I just bought a 1TB Seagate FreeAgent for mac. It is all working fine, I have partitioned it to use half for time machine and half as just an external hard drive. It turns on every hour to back up, and sleeps after that, but I find it turns on a couple more times in the hour when it is not backing up and the storage partition isn't in use either.
It's quiet so I don't mind when it turns on to back up, but it's a bit annoying when it comes on when it's not in use.
    Any ideas appreciated,
    Thanks.

    nwgjackson,
Welcome to the Forums! I think what you are seeing is one spotlight indexes regularly so that its easy for you to find things, and when the disk is plugged to your mac it periodically reads what is on the disk so that you can easily access it if you so wish.

  • Should the Airport be turned off when not in use?

Yes Or No, on or off?
    mp

There has always been two equally divided camps when it comes to leaving electronic equipment running 24x7 or powering-off. I think it really depends on what your requirements are for the base station.
The AEBSn draws about 22 watts of power when running, about the same as a low wattage incandescent light bulb ... and puts out about the same amount of heat.

  • RAM remaining active when not in use and grinding system to hault

    Hello there!
The to point, my RAM appears to be acting very strangely and would be very grateful for any explanation/workaround/solution.
I regularly use the RAM intensive application After Effects CS5. I have 16GB (8x2 GB matching pairs) of RAM which has worked fine for the past year or so until now. I usually tell After Effects not to render one frame at a time (no absurd multiprocessing requests) and to leave 6GB of ram free for other applications in its memory preferences. This used to stop AE from gobbling up too much RAM and slowing down the entire system. However, all of a sudden AE has started to disregard its memory settings and proceeds to use all of the available RAM until none is left. I then see my renders grind to a hault and the entire system move the speed of a snail as little to no free RAM remains.
What is worse is that after I stop the render and quit After Effects, 8GB or so of ram remains active acccording to Activity Monitor, even though nothing is using it. I need to restart in order to get back to normal.
I have tried all of the standard AE fixes, erasing preferences, cleaning caches, changing render settings, etc. I have also done all of the standard OS clean outs with Onxy, Disk Utility, etc. Nothing works.
Below is a screen shot of my idle system with nothing open. The numbers do not add up!
Below is a screenshot of what happens about 5 minutes into any render in AE, completely full RAM with with the Swap increasing with every pass.
I realize that this is quite a specific question I should point at Adobe but I'm thinking it might be more of an OS issue as it has happened so suddenly for no apparent reason. No new type of render, no settings or updates applied lately, just completely out of the blue. Help much appreciated!
I am running an Early 2008 8 Core Mac Pro, 8 GB of good ram in matching 2GB pairs. 4 fast internal drives. Mac OS 10.6.7

The numbers don't add up as 6GB is shown as active in the pie chart while the amount of ram used by the processes list barely reaches 1GB. So what is using the remaining 5GB of active memory?
I would not mind this so much if it was being used by some unseen system resource, and was made free if needed by other apps, but that is the problem. When I load more apps from this state the ram does not clear out and I see the computer struggling and writing page outs/ins even when the amount of ram being used in the list of prcesses is well below 16GB. The mystery process seems to remain active and does not release the ram.
Hatter - I have gone through MANY threads about Adobe not releasing memory. I have been using AE for years and never and very aquainted with the best settings to use for rendering in accordance with available ram, processors, and fast drives. Many of them complain about inactive memory not being released and Apple's memory management. This is more of an oddity as until now everything has been fine. I am doing a render of the sort I have done hundreds of times in the past with this system.
My problem is that this started happening all of a sudden for no apparent reason. AE allows one to control how much ram it uses and how much is left for other applications. I keep this at the Adobe forum suggested 6GB, and until a few days ago it would leave 6GB free. The render would progress smoothly, no need for page outs, no maxing of the ram. A simple render.
Now the same simple renders max out all of the RAM despite my telling AE not to use it all. Changing the memory use settings seems to make no difference no difference at all and I gradually see the ram fill out to maximum and then the page in/outs go through the roof, the render taking 4-5 times as long as previous.
So a bit stuck here! Do yall think I'll need to re-install my system to fix this or perhaps it might be more of a hardware problem? I am hesitant to wipe and re-install from a backup image so if any other possibly solutions come to mind please let me know...Possibly a hardware problem? =/
    Thanks for yout time!

  • Firefox stalls when not in use and must be forced quit.

The program works fine while I am actively using it. When it is in the background while using another application, or when I wake the computer from sleep and bring up Firefox, the program has stalled/become unresponsive. This phenomenon started approximately two weeks ago. I have turned all add-ons acquired the past six months in an attempt to eliminate conflicts, but the program still freezes when not active at least once a day.

You can also consider to create a new profile to have a fresh start. That will also get rid of some weird pref values.
    See "Creating a profile":

You can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

  • A way to turn the software "off" when not in use.

    JUSTIFICATION :
Java software is not compatible with Solomon (my company's time card/financial system). I have to literally install the software everytime I use usps.com, and want to print out a shipping label, for instance, and then uninstall Java again. This happens a few times a year...about every 1-2 months or so. Very tedious. Any advice?

Your company software probably has a bug and definitely wasn't tested enough.
If nothing else and you are a developer then just ask for another computer.

  • How to turn the airport off when not in use

My airport network is currently running 24/7. I'm away from home a large part of the day. Is there a way to disable it, and then re-enable w/o unplugging it from the wall?
    Thanks.

Home Depot and Lowes have simple electronic timers that plug into the AC socket that will allow you to set auto ON/OFF times. The Express would plug right into the device.
