My Mac Pro Experience (coming from PowerBook)

Hey All, I recently bought Apple's new power horse, and I thought I'd share my initial experience using it.
A little background
For the last few years I've been using a PowerBook G4 as my primary computer. I was about to buy a PowerMac when Apple made the announcement that they were going Intel, so I decided to put off a new computer purchase until they came out with the Intel-based PowerMac. When they finally came out with the machine a couple weeks ago, at first I was going to wait a month or two, giving time for any first-rev issues to surface. But turns out that's a lot easier said than done--on Saturday, after Flash froze up on me for the 3rd time that day, I ran to the Apple Store to get my Mac Pro.
Usage
I got the standard configuration and have since added a 160gb HDD for Windows from NewEgg and a another gb of memory from Crucial. Looking forward the plan is to go up to 4gb of memory, get ATI's Radeon X1900 XT when the Mac edition comes out, and grab a 500gb backup HDD.
To migrate my data over, I decided not to use the Migration Assistant as I didn't want to move any preferences or system files for apps I've uninstalled, etc.. So instead I just hooked up an ethernet cable between the computers. First I moved my apps, then my email, then my iTunes libraray, then all other files in my Desktop, Documents, Music, Photos, and Sites. I was already using .Mac syncing for my Bookmarks, Calendars, Contacts and Keychains, so that part was easy-- just enabled syncing.
Coming from a PowerBook, this thing is ridiculously fast. All these little things that took several seconds to load on my PowerBook are now instantaneous (loading Dashboard widgets for the first time after boot, for example). I have not noticed a performance hit running non-universal apps under Rosetta, however before I got more memory, the system's memory usage would almost max out when I was using Photoshop, so that extra 1GB definitely makes a difference there. One thing that's exciting about this computer is knowing it's only going to get faster as more applications become universal, Mac OS X Leopard comes out and has better 64-bit support, and as I add more RAM.
It's also very quiet. The new Xeons don't run very hot, and with the aid of a heatsink that spans the entire width of the machine on top of it, the fans are barely audible. The loudest part about it is the hard drive.
Boot Camp installation was just as easy as all the articles say. Windows runs pretty well on it– it lasted a full hour before crashing! I installed a program called MacDrive (www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive6) that enables Windows to access Mac-formatted hard drives. One thing that's worth a mention about MacDrive is that you have the option of making those drives read-only, so if I get some crazy worm or virus or whatever, it won't stand a chance corrupting any of my important data on the OS X drive.
But the main reason I installed Windows was for the games. While I was sleeping I had Steam download and install Half-Life 2. This morning I opened it up to check the performance. It's not bad at all–-with a 1680x1050 resolution (native 20" Cinema Display res), the recommended video settings were as follows:
- model detail: high
- texture detail: high
- shader detail: high
- water detail: reflect world (of options: basic reflection, reflect world, reflect all)
- shadow dtail: high
- color correction - disabled
- antialiasing mode: none (of options: none, 2x, 4x, 8x)
- filtering mode: trilinear (of options: bilinear, trilinear, anisotropic 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x)
- wait for vertical sync: disabled
- high dynamic range - full
The high dynamic range capability is particularly exciting to me because my gaming pc crashed every time I tried playing The Lost Coast, Valve's high dynamic range demo level. So, not bad at all.
Annoyances
Big thing here is the lack of the wireless module. Unless I want to span a cable across my room, I need wireless internet. A temporary solution to this is I have my PowerBook sharing its wireless connection with the Mac Pro over ethernet.
Not all Mac applications work on it yet, due to the x86 64-bit architecture. So far the programs I have tried to run that won't include Parallels (basically a VirtualPC for Intel Macs), Cisco VPN Client, and MySQL Administrator. The iStat Pro widget is also acting up.
On the Windows side, there are several things Apple could improve on. The biggest one here is the Eject key-- it will only open, but not close, the cd tray. If you have two optical drives installed, it will open both of them together (whereas on OS X it opens/closes the top one, and ALT+Eject opens/closes the bottom one).
With the exception of these minor inconveniences (which probably won't even be around a month from now) my experience has been completely positive. The only time I've had any sort of trouble was when I tried accessing a mounted drive that was no longer physically connected, forcing me to relaunch Finder, but this is a well-known issue that has nothing to do with the specific machine.
If you're thinking about getting a Mac Pro, my advice is to go for it.

[iIt's good to finally read something positive in these MacPro discussions.
Bear in mind that this is a technical support forum where users get help for their technical issues rather than a "feel good about your purchase" forum.
As for the Mac Pro itself, from what I've seen it's a extremely stable system and relatively problem-free system. You might want to have a look in the MacBook forums for a comparison of the number of recurring issues. Only then will you appreciate how good the Mac Pro is.

how can i open the file MPEG-2 Video, AC3 on my mac, when its coming from a sony camcorder?

I think those files are Samsung's proprietary format, so only the Samsung software can open and display them.  If they do not make their software for OS X, then you are stuck requiring windows.
I thought the DVR itself lets you save as standard avi as the backup file format?

Did a search here and couldn't find anything specific to this monitor. Have a chance to upgrade at work and the Apple display is not in the running. If you've had any experience with this monitor, I'd like to hear it. I will be doing high-end print production on it. I curently have a Lacie Electron Blue IV 22" which looks nice but is square which I hate when making tabloid layouts.
The computer is a G5 1.8 GHz. It's a bit old but it chugs along quite well.

I'm using a Mac Pro (Intel 2 x 2.66 GHz) with NVidia 7300 and this monitor. I love it. It's amazing. Connected via single link DVI. Beware though, Acer shipped several models with a crippled native resolution through DVI. Resolved by firmware update that service has to provide.
the one big problem is Apple needs to update the video card drivers to solve a blinking display issue when coming out of sleep. For me this is a minor issue for a beautiful 26" display, but getting really annoying.

  • Quard Core cpu for Mac pro is coming soon?

Shall I wait? end of this year?

From what I've read about quad core processors, the more cores the lower the Ghz rating, so when Intel does launch their Quad Core Xeon, I would expect it to run at @ 1.6Ghz or 1.83Ghz per core.
If you look at what Apple did with the PowerMac G5, they were using dual core in each model, except the early single CPU machines. When dual core G5 appeared, they dropped one chip from the PowerMac and introduced the G5 Quad.
It would make sense, cost wise, when a quad core chip is available, to replace the dual chip machines with 1 quad core chip. The top of the range configuration could be a dual chip quad core beast running at 1.6Ghz or 1.83Ghz per core.
The only disadvantage of having more and more cores per chip is the shared level 2 cache and a single front side bus per processor (allowing bottlenecks to occur). Again I have read reports that to enhance multiple core performance, the level 2 cache will have to be upwards of 8MB shared, ideally 16MB shared would allow 4MB per core on a quad core. This would help remove the bottlenecking caused by a one chip bus layout as more data is being processed per core.
Should you wait? That is entirely up to you but the way things are going now, it won't be long until 16 core chips or even 32 core chips, then 64 core chips etc are being announced, forever lowering power consumption (heat) and noise, not to mention lowering Ghz - so much for the Ghz war that went on for years! The lowering of Ghz per core will mean your system is much more memory dependant and so with quad core chips and higher, the memory needs of the system will be increased dramatically.
The basic fact of computing is if you want a faster machine you don't need a faster processor, you need more RAM memory. The more you have the faster your machine will run. When your machine is maxed out on memory and isn't up to the job, then it's time to trade up.
I bought a Mac Pro stock 2.66 knowing full well a quad core would be coming. It's a highly capable machine and so far hasn't seemed to slow down whatever I've thrown at it - data wise that is, of course having 6Gb RAM helps in that department too with much more room to expand (another 10Gb's can go in) when I need to.
The decision, as they say is up to you.

  • Mac Pro not booting from CD's using 'C'

All of a sudden I am unable to boot from a CD. Every disk that I try will not boot. The CD drive will try to read for 5 minutes, then crash with that different language please restart your computer crash screen. I've tried DISKWARRIOR and MacOS X Leopard. They will not boot. I've cleaned the disks and reset the PRAM, but still won't work. All external connections are unplugged.
3 months ago, it was working perfectly, I even did a clean install of Leopard. The only thing that was changed in my system, was an upgrade to the NVIDIA GeForce 88GT, but why would using a different video card force a crash during a CD boot?
Otherwise, my MacPro is working perfectly and the disk has no errors. I can read, write, install apps and run movies on the CD ROM drives. but cannot boot

Recently, I bought diskwarrior but it doesn't boot. I tried the Leopard install to test it out. That doesn't work, then I called Alsof and they said it should boot on my current system.
DiskWarrior will not boot on a Mac Pro (Early 2008).
"All Mac models meeting the system requirements for DiskWarrior *except the new Mac Pro and Xserve models introduced on 01/08/2008, the MacBook Air introduced on 01/15/2008, the MacBook/MacBook Pro models introduced on 02/26/2008 and the iMac models introduced on 04/28/2008* can be started from the CD."
    <http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/support.html>
If you want to use DiskWarrior, you need to put it on another drive or partition containing OSX 10.5.4
Therefore, all of sudden nothing boots. Like I said, the only change I did was to replace the video card.
That's why the Leopard DVD won't boot. The Leopard DVD that came with the computer doesn't have drivers for the new graphics card. If you still have the old card, install it, install Leopard, update to 10.5.4, then put in the new graphics card.

  • My Mac Pro Experience

Got my stock 2.66 MP about a week ago and wanted to use it for a bit before giving my impressions. I run a graphic design business and am trading up from a 3-year old G5 dual 2.0. My primary workflow is in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, plus all the MS Office apps, so Rosetta performance is obviously a big deal for me.
I installed an additional 2GB of RAM that I ordered from memory2go.com (2x1g) -- so far it's working flawlessly, no errors from rember.
I added a 500gb perpendicular barracuda in the second drive bay, and pulled a 250 SATA-1 drive from my old G5 in the third, giving me a Terabyte of internal storage (plus a firewire 150 Gb).
    Performance:
This thing is very, very fast. The slight, but noticeable lag in the finder that my G5 had is gone. Everything is instantaneous. All the iLife apps just smoke and the Rosetta based apps are as fast or faster than my G5. I honestly can't tell the difference in Photoshop or Illustrator. Disk access is much faster than my G5 and files open and save much quicker. The stock video card is fine for my uses (I'm not a PC gamer -- that's what my X360 is for) -- it drives my 21 inch CRT and 17 inch LCD without any trouble.
    Issues:
I had a **** of a time migrating from my G5 using the migration assistant. Target disk mode just would never complete (gave up after 7 hours), so I pulled the drive from the G5 and dropped it in the 4th bay. It completed after 3 hours, but none of my documents made it across. My user account, login and most of my settings were fine, but random things didn't come across. I DON'T recommend using the migrator from a PPC based system.
I had the "volume keys don't work" problem that's been reported here -- a reboot fixed it. I got random crashes in Illustrator, which was fixed by trashing the preferences file.
I tried to put in a 3rd party DVD burner in the second drive bay, and it caused a kernel panic on startup. I'm going to play with the jumpers to see if I can get it to work, otherwise I'll just put it in a spare firewire enclosure.
I'm waiting for the Parallels update or the Boot Camp SATA fix before doing any Windows experimentation.
Other than that, it's been a fantastic machine and I'm very happy with the purchase. Hope you find this helpful.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro wakes up from sleep with Mavericks.

Ever since I upgraded to OSX Mavericks on Tuesday, my early 2008 Mac Pro keeps waking up from sleep mode every couple hours. It goes back to sleep again on its own though after a minute, so I'm thinking it's some kind of new automated feature that I'm not aware of. With the Mac Pro being fairly loud when it wakes up from sleep mode, it woke me up three times last night! Is there some kind of option in the system preferences that I'm not aware of that can deactivate this new behavior? I usually only shut down my computer once a week, and keep it in sleep mode when I'm not using it most of the time, but I'm going to have to start shutting it down every  night now to keep it from waking me up throughout the night...

  • Do I need to install the drivers on my old Mac Pro disc or from my Snow Leopard disc?

    Hi,
    I've got a 2008 Mac Pro (dual quad @ 3GHz) w/ 24GB RAM and I've got Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit installed. What do I need to install?
On my newer 2009 iMac (which included Mac OS X 10.6) I just inserted that disc specific to the iMac and installed the drivers, but the disc for my Mac Pro is old (10.5.2) do I need to install the drivers on it or not? Can I just insert my Snow Leopard 10.6 disc to install Boot Camp etc., or won't that include drivers for the Mac Pro? The Mac Pro is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your reply,
I have both the silver discs specific to my iMac and Mac Pro models that you receive with your Mac, and a general copy of Snow Leopard that you buy from the store.
I used the silver disc that is specific for my iMac to install the drivers, and Boot Camp 3.0 on my iMac. But with the Mac Pro, the software is older and only has Boot Camp 2.0, thus I'm wondering if I can simply use the software on the general copy of Snow Leopard I own, or does the silver disc contain specific drivers for my Mac Pro that I need?
I'm under perhaps the wrong impression that the silver discs that you get with your Mac purchase contain drivers for your specific Mac model which you can't get from the general Snow Leopard disc.
    Thanks.

  • Updates on Mac Pro Prevent Boot from SSD

    Hey there everyone,
I recently upgraded my 2010 Mac Pro (Quad Core) to an SSD Drive using the OCZ Petrol Drive and I coudn't be happier. The system is super snappy and works great. That said, I downloaded the latest updates to my system last night and as of today, it wont boot to the SSD. All other boot operations seem fine, but the SSD wont boot. It goes into the progress bar screen you get when a firmware update is running then just shuts itself down.
I tried reseting the PRAM with no luck and also tried a disk repair from the Lion Recovery Partition as well as a Lion DVD I made, but both fail to repair the disk. I am currently recovering from a Time Machine backup and everything seems to be OK so far, but has this happened to anyone else with the latest batch of updates? I will update this post when the Time Machine Backup completes and let you all know the outcome.

Update 2: I did a hard shutdown and rebooted holding down the option key to try and boot from the Lion Recovery partition and perform a disk repair only to find out the Lion Recovery partition was no more. Wow...looks like this is a bigger issue than I thought. Reinstalling Lion from a DVD now. This should be fun...

Now, from what I can see, the wake event comes from the Bluetooth - but I only have one BT device paired (they Apple wireless keyboard), and I have 'allows BT devices to wake up' DISABLED.
Does anyone have any suggestions or idea what could be causing the wake-ups? This seems to be happening every few hours, but at no specific times...
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Depends.
As you can see, the wake event seems to specifically point to the ONE USB bus that the BT is on - but nothing else. All other USB busses have a different hex address....
Having said that, I have - on the other bus - an RF logitech mouse (I disconnected that - no difference. And, when waking it says 'wake even on the xxx' bus - not the one that 'seems' to wake the system).
Then, a UPS, and finally an Apple 30inch CinemaDisplay.
The strange this is that is was fine the first 2 weeks I had the system. Then, one weekend being gone, I turned it off (but that wasn't the first time) and then on. Since then, the wake-up issue on that 'remote device causing event' happened - though of course I can't be sure they are really connected....
Do you think another device could cause the wake-up - even though the console would wound to BT?
For the record, I have no BT issues (adapter turning of or otherwise) that I am aware of.
Thanks for the help / suggestions!

Macs use "all devices active" with keyboards and mice. You can literally type every other key from alternating keyboards. There is no sensible way to turn them off.
The codes generated by the keys are not letters but key numbers. All you need is to set the correct keyboard translation to replace the default keyboard translation.

  • Mac Pro - Unwanted Waking From Sleep - A Possible Fix

I've suffered intermittent unwanted wakes on my Mac Pro for years, although there have been months in which it seemed to go away. Console consistently suggested that the problem was a USB hub (EHCI), which I traced to my Apple 24-inch HD Cinema Display. Here's a sample from the Console-
11/22/10 10:28:32 PM kernel Wake reason = EHCI
11/22/10 10:28:32 PM kernel System Wake
11/22/10 10:28:32 PM kernel The USB device HubDevice (Port 5 of Hub at 0xfd000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2)
When the problem started recurring last month, my "fix" was simple: unplugging the video display's USB cable. The display's USB hub is, of course, no longer available, but I plugged a third-party hub into the USB input that the display had previously been using, plugged in all the peripherals that I'd previously used the display's hub for, and so far no unwanted wakes. The only difference I've noticed is that the display's little power indicator light (bottom left corner) no longer lights up, but that's a small price to pay for being able to put my system soundly to sleep.
If the ghost returns, I'll let you know.

This a is common sleep issue. This person has it.
In my sleep tip faq, the first tip I give is this......
"USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit."
