My Mac Pro freezes.

I have two startup disks. One SL for fcp 7 and one ML where I run FCP X. FCP X is often plagued by the beach ball. Recently when editing on FCP X (and I suspect it's when I am also running Safari) my Mac Pro freezes and requires a power off to get going again. Any suggestions?
Here is Etrecheck readout:

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Late 2013 Mac Pro freezes constantly - GPU Hang

I've been having a very consistently recurring problem with my brand new Mac Pro freezing. I am unable to predictably reproduce the problem, unfortunately, which makes it hard to solve or troubleshot from the get go. Basically every time I boot up I get a full freeze of the machine anywhere from within the first 10 minutes to an hour of boot up... somewhere in that window usually. Whatever applications are open will freeze, including system OS and usually only the mouse will be able to move but I will not be able to click on anything or Force Quit or restart. My only option is to hard reboot by holding down the power button for several seconds.
It doesn't seem to be isolated to occurring with any one application being open. I use my computer primarily for audio recording and editing. I use Avid Pro Tools HD 11.2. It's a version of their software supported to run on Mavericks 10.9.3 which is what I am running. I use it with their HD Native Thunderbolt hardware. Other than a few drivers installed to run audio and MIDI interfaces connected to the machine, I don't have much else installed on the computer yet. I do have a few 3rd party audio plugins installed, however, these problems were occurring before I installed much of anything on the machine.
I've checked Console each time I have the freeze ups and scroll to the log at the time it occurred. Almost every time without fail I get basically the following message in the Console log:

It's almost always saying something about a "GPU Hang" at the time of freeze up. I don't know much about what the possible problem could be but some initial research led me to believe it was graphics card related. I thought that because I was running two monitors perhaps the connections there were fouling up somehow. I am running two identical monitors simultaneously. One runs off a regular HDMI cable. The other was via a 3rd party Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. I thought perhaps the non-Apple branded adapter I was using could be the culprit? The Apple Store (of course) agreed and sold me the Apple DVI to mini DisplayPort adapter. I swapped it out but it did not solve my issue. Still having the freezes. Sometimes after the freeze happens I'll also get a pop up warning that my external hard drive connected via USB was ejected improperly, even though I hadn't touched anything?? The whole thing goes haywire.
It's been doing this for a few months now. I've contacted Apple Care and spent an hour on the phone with them which resulted in making an appointment at a local Apple Store with a Genius. This was after they recommended that I reset both the SMC and the PRAM on the machine, neither of which solved the issue either. I took the machine in and they kept it for 48 hours to do a full stress test to see if they could determine the issue. No problems were found. They gave me the computer back and could not reproduce my problem.
The problem still exists. So that's why I'm writing on here, out of desperation because I have a brand new Mac Pro, under warranty, that is essentially useless. I have a follow up call into Apple Care to see what my next steps are but I haven't gotten a call back.
The only next steps I can imagine are to possibly update to Mavericks 10.9.4 to see if that might help even though Pro Tools is not yet supported by that OSX version yet. Or do a full clean re-install of OSX and all software on the computer (yikes!).
Or Apple needs to swap me a new machine. This is unacceptable.
    Anyone else having this issue??

  • Mac Pro freezes

Why does My Mac Pro freeze in outlook.com email.

My husband uses outlook.com e-mail for a special mailing he has. He goes to the search bar in Safari and types in outlook.com, then goes into his e-mail.
When typing in his message the Mac Pro freezes and the computer needs to be shut down and restarted.

  • Mac Pro Freeze and Beep

My brand new Mac Pro freezes and just begins beeping about twice a day. It freezes in various programs. It will freeze sometimes in Final Cut Pro, sometimes in After Effects, sometimes in Photoshop, and sometimes in Safari. I have a Decklink Extreme card and I suspect this may be the problem. Has anyone elses experienced this and what should I do to fix it?

  • FCP X: Mac Pro Freezes when I turn on "Analyze and Fix" media

    Hello,
I see this happening regularly ever since I started using Final Cut Pro X. If I turn on "Analyze and Fix" on my imported media files, my Mac Pro freezes up after a while. I am forced to power cycle the Mac Pro at this point.
I am running Mac OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) on a Mac Pro with 8 cores, 10GB RAM. My primary hard disk for the video editing is not the same one as the OS disk - I use a second internal drive for video and all projects / events are stored here.
If I check off / turn off analyze / fix in the background, my Mac Pro does not crash. System log does not reveal anything.
Any ideas on what can be done to fix this? Has anyone else experienced this?
    Thanks,
    -Balu

Yes - I go to the "Analyze and Fix" menu and check mark video and audio analysis and let it crunch in the background. It goes on for an hour or two. At some point, I have to power cycle my Mac Pro. It freezes up.
I see this happening on Lion OS as well...
If I don't run analyze and fix, i have absolutely no issues..
    Any thoughts?
    Thx,
    -Balu

  • Mac Pro freezes at login screen

Mac Pro (2008, dual 2.8GHz quadcore, OS 10.6.8) is set up with
Energy Saver settings: computer sleep 1 hour, screen sleep 5 minutes
Security settings: require password immediately after sleep or screen saver begins
After the computer goes to sleep, upon hitting a key, the login screen appears. However after typing password, there was a message "checking password" and then the computer freezes. I've followed recommendations in Mac Pro Freezing: Checking Password
After the computer goes to sleep, the login screen is frozen. I cannot even enter password. After hard-rebooting it, it appears OK.

Question: how can I find out what causes the computer to freeze and how can I fix it ?

I would say yes to the verbose mode and go one further and make it permanent. Coming to OSX from running Tiger on an XPF install on a beige G3 system (totally unsupported by Apple), it was ALWAYS a smart move and even in new machines running hardware they're built to, you can't lose. For the times I do have to reboot, it's good to be able to watch the startup, as you catch immediately if there's a problem with anything. It is verbose after all...
To turn the mode on, you open the Terminal, and at the prompt, type in
*sudo nvram boot-args="-v"* and hit enter. It will nag you about using the terminal (if you haven't done so before) and you enter your password, hit enter again and you're good to go. (if you want to turn it off, type in *sudo nvram boot-args=* and hit enter and your password again)

  • Mac Pro freezes after sleep, wont shut down, and 5870 issue

    Hi,
I just got my new Mac Pro 3.33Ghz hexacore a couple of days ago and I've been having some issues with it.
    1) When waking up the comp from sleep and its been cold for a while, the Mac Pro freezes. I can still move the mouse but that's about it. So, I have to do a hard restart. But...
    2) Since last night I'm not able to turn the MP off. When I try to shut it down from the menu it closes all the apps and nothing but the background and dock shows and it gets stuck there. So I have to do a hard restart, but when pressing down the power button it just goes to sleep rather then shutting down, so only way to turn it off is to pull out the cord.
    3) And the last problem I'm having is in bootcamp. When I play games (Battlefield Bad Company 2 or Crysis) the computer freezes after 3 min or so. The screen either turns blue or black and I have to shut it down. I am able to do the hard restart in Windows 7, in fact I just have to press the power button ones and it shuts off correctly.
I'm really frustrated since in the last 2 months I've had 3 iMacs and this MP and all have had problems. My old 20in iMac has been running for a couple of years now and has never had any problem...
Also, if I have to take it to the Apple store, is there anyway a tech can come to my house? I'm tired of going to the Apple store all the time, its a big hassle taking the comp there, plus I don't feel like they're really helping me.
    Thanks for your help!

just wanted to update you guys on what the official stance of OWC is on this situation. I had the same problem like you guys. I have the 240GB OWC extreme pro SSD in my Mac Pro 3,1. When it goes to sleep, and i leave it sleeping for a day -- upon returning, it will freeze up with the spinning wheel of death.
This is what they had to say about it:
"While Sleep will work with our SSDs, there have been reports of system hangs in relation to hibernation mode which is the deep state of Sleep. We suggest not using ANY program that puts your computer into hibernation mode when using an SSD. SandForce is working on this issue and it will be addressed in a future firmware update.
Normal, automatic sleep mode functions perfectly with no issues. But if you need to try and fix the hibernation issue with your Mac revision, please Open up Terminal (Applications>Utilities>Terminal) and go through the following steps:
    Type: sudo pmset hibernatemode 0
    Press: return/enter.
Type: your password when it prompts you to, then press return/enter again.
You have successfully disabled hibernation! Go ahead and exit Terminal.
Also, some have chose to use the application SmartSleep, which is free online. http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26979/smartsleep
SmartSleep is an application that you can use to set the hibernation mode on your computer.
I apologize for the inconvenience. I sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter and hope you will continue to bear with us as our extreme SSD product line transitions through these evolutions and unforeseen road bumps. Please let us know if there's anything else we may do to help."
--I would like to add that the OWC SSD is great. And since Downloading smart sleep and disabling deep sleep aka hibernate, the issue has been totally resolved. Im pretty sure the terminal entry works just as well. But I liked the added convenience of the other features of smartsleep. So there you go guys.

  • Since installing Maverick my Mac Pro freezes at least once a day, any advice?.

Since installing OS Maverick my Mac Pro is freezing at least once a day. I can not access 'Force Quit' via shortcut and have to force a shutdown. This has occured when using Firefox, so i tried Safari and Chrome, freezes using all three. It has happened while use software as well eg, Photoshop and Word.
I have installed and run AVG Anti Virus and done a full system check to ensure that there was no virus etc.... all was clear.
I am assuming that it is a bug within Maverick as i experienced none of these problems prior to its installation.
Is anyone else experiencing these issues and does anyone have any advice on prevention?

Firstly, uninstall any anti-malware software. It isn't needed and could cause your problem. Also, avoid using Chrome which can also cause problems. Never use more than one browser at a time. Using three is asking for disaster.
I've been using Mavericks on all my computers and have had no problems, so what you describe is unlikely to be a bug. Start by uninstalling the AV software using their uninstaller. Disconnect all third-party peripherals. Then try the following:
    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Mac Pro freezes or restarts shortly after startup

    Hello,
My Mac Pro has developed a habit of freezing (including mouse pointer) a while (some 10 minutes) after powering on the machine. After a forced restart the problem has disappeared for the rest of the day. On some days the computer spontaneously restarts a while after powering on and then the problem is more persistent, with the light on the front flashing and the machine not getting through powering up at all. What then helps is removing and putting back the video card. I have already replaced the video card with a new one, after which the problem had disappeared for several weeks, but now it is fully back again.
Several runs with TechTool Pro did not reveal any hardware problem.
Can someone advise on how to diagnose the freezes etc. or even how to solve it?
Below is an error report produced after a forced restart.

  • Mac Pro Freezes on Startup with Second Monitor Connected

I have a base model Mac Pro with OS X Mavericks that is fully updated. When the computer boots, if my second monitor is connected, it begins to load the login screen and freezes before it has fully loaded. The second monitor is mostly black with a few blocks of color instead of the solid grey it should be. If I disconnect the second monitor and reboot the machine, it starts up fine and the second monitor can be connected without issue anytime after the login screen has fully loaded.
I am using two identical Asus monitors with Thunderbolt to DVI adapters.
Does anyone have an idea as to why this is occurring? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I have the same problem with both Mac Pro (Office and Home)
The office's one have 2 Dell P2412H monitors with DVI adapter
The home's one have 2 Samsung 27" monitors width HDMI connections
Both have OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
If i don't unplug a monitor, the OS X when have to start the graphics for the login freeze

  • Mac Pro freezing up

Forgive the long post: I'm trying to be provide as much information as possible so I can get the best help.
    The problem:
My computer just stops working. ITunes continues to play and the mouse works, but the clock stops working and nothing functions. The only recourse is to hold down the power button. This can happen with any software, with my RAM being almost entirely in use or just the bare mimimum. It's very erratic. I see the problem mostly when viewing video in Safari or playing World of Warcraft, but that may be strictly coincidence. This is a very, very flakey problem though, so this is likely coincidence. I've tried (and failed) to make it freeze.
I have a ~1 month old Mac Pro. I bought it at the local Apple Store stock + bluetooth/wireless. Original specs were with the Nvidia card, 1GB RAM (2x512) and 250GB drive.
    Upgrades:
I bought a 250GB drive and installed it as a Raid0 via a reformat and Apple Disk Utility. So now I have a "single" 500GB hard drive which I occcassionally back up to a USB hard drive.
I bought the OEM ATI x1900 from the Apple Store and installed that.
I originally bought 2x1GB RAM upgrades from OWC. RAM caused kernal panics. I've sent that back to OWC and am dealing with severe customer service issues (I gave up on them last Friday and have resorted to dealing with contesting the charge instead). In the mean time, I bought 2x1GB from Crucial and have seen no more kernal panics. RAM is installed with the stock Apple RAM in riser b (2x512) and Crucial in riser a (2x1GB). (As soon as my charge with OWC gets resolved I'll be buying another 2x1GB from Crucial, 3GB isn't quite enough.) While I'd love to buy the RAM directly from Apple, the price is quite unreasonable.
    Other peripherals:
    30" Apple Cinema Display
    Stock wired apple keyboard/mouse
Optical sound out to an amp/reciever
(printer is usually not plugged in)
    Software:
All software is of the highest caliber. No shareware/freeware other than what's mentioned (i.e. SMC Fan Control). All software is Intel native with the exception of Quicken, which is rarely running except for the widgets. Only one or two widgets that aren't pre-installed, and none of them are shadey.
    Tests and troubleshooting:
I ran Apple Hardware test extended and it passed. I've used (and not used) SMC Fan Control. I've zapped the PRAM.
    Possible guesses:
It's hard to troubleshoot as I can't really function with less RAM, the original vCard, etc. So it's hard to start elimintating hardware. Because I put it all into the machine around the same time, anything could be causing the issues.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. It's still under Apple Care, but I doubt they can do more than I have done and I really can't lose this computer for a week while they troubleshoot as I work on it 50+ hours a week.

I didn't know that about the RAID, but it makes sense. Do you think my mismatched HDs could be causing the issues? If so, am I going to see that much of a difference (speed) if I just take out both HDs and install a single 500GB? On my old G5 I had a raptor as the boot drive and an extra storage drive, but having two HDs, while handy, is a slightly annoying (having to cmmd drag from the desktop, create various aliases like iTunes, etc.). It sounds silly, but there it is. I figured if I just created a RAID using the original 250GB drive as 1/2 the RAID, I'd save a bit of money and see a minor speed increase. Your thoughts? And if you think a single 500GB HD would be a better option, do you have any recommendations?
I didn't do a clean install and erase after the OWC memory issues. I've seen you on these forums a ton and am sure you know what you're talking about, but is there a cliff notes explanation as to why that would matter? It's not that I don't take your word for it, but I like to educate myself when possible.
I was going to wait until 10.5 came out (next Tuesday maybe?) and then do a clean install as I've always felt that was a better option than the upgrade, but there is no real knowledge behind that. Is an upgrade just as good as an install? In that case I'll just stay up late some night this week (after I address the HD issue) and do the reinstall, then upgrade when 10.5 comes out.

  • Mac Pro freezes up; temporarily fixed by reboot

I have a Mac Pro 2x3 GHz Quad core with 8 GB RAM. I'm experiencing bizarre freeze ups and other malfunctions that are temporarily fixed by rebooting.
The computer is used for live broadcasting twice a week.  Between broadcasting events it sits mostly idle handling email and running a network camera via Evocam.  After I finish a broadcast on Wednesday I copy some audio and video files from the broadcast onto a portable drive.  I leave the computer on. The computer seems to be operating properly when I finish and leave.  Then when I return on Sunday to set up for a new broadcast most often (but not always) I find that the computer begins to act very erratically.  For example, opening a folder on the desktop takes 10 to 20 seconds before it appears on the desktop.  Some files that should be in the folder don't show up.  Then the desktop freezes altogether for up to 1 minute.  The mouse moves across the screen but clicks are ineffectual. I am forced to shutdown and restart.  The computer comes back up functioning perfectly fine.  The cycle then repeats when I return on Wednesday.
I've run TechTool Pro and no problems are found.  The main hard drive checks out fine.  I've noticed a large number of strange (at least to me) messages in console. One of the recurring ones is:
User Event Agent:***mach_port_mod_refs returned error 15
I also get a lot of console entries beginning with "racoon:IKE packet" or "racoon: IPSec"
Also entries such as "kernel: /!\ WARNING: 284 recoverable class Fbd error(s)"
I have no idea where to proceed with troubleshooting.  Is this likely a hard drive problem, a computer hardware problem or something else?  All help will be greatly appreciated.

I've only been using my new Mac Pro (late 2013) for a few days now but am expereicing an issue on restart/start up. It seems the computer struggles to search for the two new 1920x1200 Dell displays that are hooked up to it through mini display-DVI converters.
Sometimes it only sees one display, but when it finally finds the second one (usually before the login screen,) the second display appears to look corrupted showing a grid of weird static blocks. This then makes the pinwheel appear and login screen become translucent and eventually freeze forcing me to perform a hard reset.
Usually after a few hard restarts and switching the display cables around, it eventually starts up.
I'm running 10.9.3 btw and also am plagued with the Adobe/GPU issue. Could this problem also be related to OS X?
    Thanks.

Try using another keyboard; I know that may sound unrelated, but it's simple, and this is my reason for the advice:
I've been having my computer shut itself off either during sleep or while trying to wake from sleep. Attempting to reset my pram, as directed by AppleCare, caused my mac pro to exhibit these symptoms exactly: one mostly black screen with peculiar rectangular patterns which occasionally contain bits of text, and an Apple logo covering login area of other screen.
I found that these issues only occurred while I had the apple keyboard connected; it is the same keyboard as depicted in the two images above. After disconnecting that keyboard I was able to use another to reset the pram successfully.
The sleep and shutdown issues I've been having are still occurring.
Anyway, try removing your Apple Aluminum USB Keyboard and see if that helps. It may still just be a treatable symptom of a bigger hardware problem, but it might help some of you out.

  • Intermittent Mac Pro freezing - perhaps a solution

    Hi all,
this is part a request for advice, and part a possible solution:
I've a brand new latest model Mac Pro and it's been locking up from day one, but only occasionally.
The mouse freezes and will occasionally move a little after a while, drives are very slow to mount, iTunes launches very slowly and the superdrives sometimes won't open at all!
A restart fixes this, but only for a while.
The problem seemed to be exacerbated by having firewire and/or USB peripherals plugged in, but I couldn't nail it down to one device (or cable). After a lot of swapping about and frustration I've hit upon the possibly answer with the help of an Applestore Genius...
I've removed my Aluminium keyboard - the one thing I'd not thought to be suspicious of as it came with the machine! - and I'm typing this son my old KB - and so far so good! It's only been one evening but so far no problems... Next step is to plug th eold keyboard back in and see if the issue returns!
I hear there's a firmware update for the Aluminium KBs so I'll try that too. Anyone else had a similar issue and got results from keyboard firmware update?

USB hubs are also known to be a problem. So plugging into an Apple CD monitor, plugging mouse into keyboard, any and all of those use hubs and while 'improved' with 10.5.2, problems with USB hubs date back to Jaguar 10.2.x (10.2.5 lasted just weeks as it tried to 'fix' problem and broke so many by removing legacy support with cleaner code) that 10.2.6 had to be released ASAP. And seems to always be there under the radar.
and on my system, I found that some of the trouble I had was indirectly linked to using Hardware Monitor, which I had used (and trusted 95% anyway). But fewer = better sometimes, and reducing startup items and tasks always helps.
