My Mac Pro has narcolepsy!
Well, maybe not quite that bad, but what happened to the stability of the Mac environment? This is my first Intel Mac, and I hope this is not the best I can expect out of this machine. This machine is much more crash prone in every respect, but one thing that is somewhat recurrent is its intermittent inability to wake from sleep. Twice this week, I have put the machine to sleep and the next day it will not wake up. The power light continues its steady pulse. I tried re-plugging the keyboard and mouse, inserting a disc into the external DVD burner, turning the displays off and on, clicking the mouse, beating on the keyboard, plugging in the memory card reader, anything that I could think of that might trigger it back to life, but nothing has worked. I've had to hold down the power button until it cuts off, then start back up, losing any work that was open before sleep. Anyone else experiencing this?
No. But troubleshooting is a matter of trial and error; fresh install; and of course backups and repairs (Alsoft Disk Warrior). Don't just keep working.
With a good backup, you can do a restore and be back up in under an hour.
Isolate the OS from data. Keep the boot drive and system lean, don't install what isn't essential. And rule out any and all USB cables, devices, FW too, including card reader. Try going for a day w/o each.
Don't put it to sleep.
There was a firmware update to fix sleep issues.
From where you are with the system, leave the drive as is and don't use it. Clone it or install fresh system. Lengthy but often quickest way in the end.

Mac Pro has slowed to a crawl - Please Help Me!
Hello,
For some time now my Wireless or Wired Internet connection using my Mac Pro has slowed to almost nothing. For example, This page took 5 mins to load and now Internet use has become unusable.
I feel its my Mac Pro because all other Apple Computer run very fast wirelessly. I have (2) New iMac's (1) Apple TV and (1) Apple iPhone. All stream and surf the Internet blazingly fast.
My Mac Pro is constantly being redirected to other sites (mostly **** related) and a huge amount of Pop ups (even though pop ads are disabled in Safari). All Internet browsers perform the same on my Mac Pro or ANYTHING Internet related including WoW, Software updates or even iTunes Music Down loads.
I really feel that in some way (which is shocking) I am infected with "something" that is making my computer crawl on the Internet. Redirection of websites is just now very aggravating.
I am looking at the (2) Original Disks that came inside the Mac Pro Box. I'm seriously considering wiping my system clean and starting from scratch.
I currently hold NOTHING on my Factory 320GB HD other than programs.
I have installed (2) 1TB drives and created a RAID slice thus creating a single HD icon on my desktop that reads 1.8TB. Thats is where all my Music, Photos, and Movies reside.
My question is....
When I wipe my system will that RAID be broken? Will I lose everything on those 2 drives or will using the restore CD's leave all that information in tact?
Please let me know before I proceed.
Thank you for your time.
JohnYour RAID won't be touched. But back it up today if you haven't yet!
I use Firefox for security with noscript and some other filters, but I also hardened the router firewall to manually block services, ports and add rules - both incoming and outgoing.
You might want to look at LittleSnitch or NetBarrier and do some logging.
I've seen/heard where older routers and modems were fine, but not with Mac Pro or with Intel Macs in general and needed to be replaced or firmware updated. Problems with the latest updates for Airport have been seen by some, and worth checking into - on forums, news sites or hit google.
And of course check what processes are getting loaded and run; manually delete caches, history, metadata, even the bookmarks cache.
~/Library/Caches/Metadata
There are issues with fake Flash updates; normal sites (like CNN) suffering from SQL-injection. Best to run with javascript off for now.
Might want to look into ClamXav and other malware protection. But I would switch and see how Firefox and Opera behave. And turn off java, script, and plug-ins while you consider your options and try to find out why. -
My mac pro has died, how can I see my emails on my macbook
My Mac Pro has died. I intend to get it repaired, obviously, but I need to see my emails from the many years of emails archived on its undamaged hard drive. I have removed the hard drive and connected it to my macbook using a USB carrier. I can find myself under the users, but the library file where the mail folder is kept remains hidden, so I can't copy it across.
What can I do to get my emails useable again immediately?
I posted this before but on a Macbook discussion and got no useful reply.
It surely is possible to do this isn't it?In Finder select Go, then hold the option key.
You will now see Library. Select it and navigate to Mail.
emails are in V2 Folder
See eric's suggestion to "check ’Show Library Folder’"
f1eng wrote:

To keep it seperate from the Mail already on this Mac, I would set up another user account (->System Preferences->Users & Accounts), and then log into the new account. Quit Mail, Delete ~/Library/Mail in the new account and copy Mail from the other Mac.
Delete these files to force a re-index:

Memory Leak in Mac Pro. My Mac Pro has 16 GB memory
The memory (as shown in the Activity Monitor) goes from a high of approximately 11 GB free memory to a low of approximately 50 MB. The leaked memory seems to be going to "Inactive". When the memory is on the low end, the Mac Pro is very slow, sometimes freezing for several seconds. Does anyone know what the problem could be?
An update to my original discussion message. Now the Mac Pro has some extreme lag times when accessing programs, deleting files, copying files, etc. This occurs even when the free memory as shown in the Activity Monitor is high (over 8 GB). If anyone has an idea of how to correct this problem, please let me know.

We Recently had a few brief power failures. Since then, my Mac Pro has been very slow on startup. Any suggestions?
Like the man says:
Run Disk Utility > Repair ... (not just repair permissions) while booted from another drive. If you have a stronger utility like Disk Warrior, that would be even better.
If you find that the ONLY way you can do this is by booting from the DVD, The Hatter recommends you establish an emergency drive or partition on a drive other than the Boot drive and use that in the future. It makes emergency Repair, backup, and cloning much easier. -

do not use your normal system for now - it is probably corrupt and can lead to more issues
try a clean system w/o any 3rd party anything, divers, cables, devices
rather common for fb-dimms to fail and go bad, luck, other than apple, they carry lifetime warranties -

okay-what, am I a salesperson now? dunno why you can't google it yourself, or get me a job doing this (just kidding--sorta)
anyways, you could try either twistedmelon or a bluetooth presentation remote (targus or Kensington, maybe logitech.
I think i've done enough here....just fyi, bluetooth on a mac pro desktop isn't great....
getting a dongle for that might be helpful.....

my mac pro has no sound. don'yt know what i did. is there a mute i don't know about? was wking fine.
F10 is usually the function key on MacBook Pro's. You might have accidentally touched it. Hit it again, and the sound will return.
Also, I hope you're not actually using OSX 10.5.1. You should get all the security and performance updates to protect your Mac. -

My Mac Pro has a 10.5.8 version, I need to upgrade to 10.6 to be able to upgrade to OS Lion and other programs that require 10.6 or newer
It's not your wording that's at issue. It's the incorrect information you provided. Go back and read my reply.
I'm sorry but I can't help your mis-wording. I can only make sense from what you have written. Your location is the UK so I must assume English is your first language without other information to go by.
If you wrote the same thing a hundred times in one day, then you'd use copy and paste, too. So don't insult those of us who do. -
My late 2013 Mac Pro has a dust problem, any help?
My late 2013 six core Mac Pro has a lot of dust within it and it is bugging me. Is there a way i can clean it or sort it out?
Any response with be well received!
Thanks in advanceI have two cats that shed very fine black fur. After a couple of weeks of use, I noticed a build up on the intake slots of my Mac Pro (late 2013).
1. cut a piece of 1/4" hardboard / mdf / plywood into 7" circle.
2. get some very fine mesh, 'no-see-um' screening. Cut a piece into a 12" circle.
3. lay the screening on the table, lay the mdf in the middle of the screening, set the Mac Pro in the middle of the mdf.
4. stretch a narrow rubber band around the Mac Pro, just below the connector cut out
5. working around the Mac Pro, pull a portion of the rubber band away from the Mac Pro, tuck in the screening, until the whole outside edge of the screening is under the rubber band
6. the slightly larger diameter of the mdf circle keeps the screening away from the Mac Pro intake slots
Every couple of months / weeks vacuum the screen. -
I have interface M Audio 400 with 400 firewire new Mac Pro has firewire 800 Do you think an adaptor will provide the same quality? Will the M audio 400 work with lion and new system or do I need new software? Thanks so much
If you have a little Firewire adaptor, everything should work fine. It does on my system.

My Mac Pro has died can I get my Mail onto my Macbook Air?
My Macbook Pro has died and before I send it for repair I would like to get all my Mails off it onto my Macbook Air. I have both the syatem disc and a Time Machine backup.
Is there a utility to do this or anything I need to look out for or make invisible files visible (and if so how on Mavericks).
I have been very much against putting much on iCloud, I am beginning to have second thoughts now...If your email Provider uses POP, that setup is geared toward ONE computer fetching the emails off the Mail Server, reading them, and storing them locally (on your Mac). The Server deletes them after a while (but you can specify how long before it does that delete).
If your email Provider uses IMAP, that is geared toward one OR MORE computers reading emails, but the Master Copy continues to be stored on the Server. This makes it easy to use Multiple devices, and "Copying" is completey optional. But your Server mailbox can get really BIG unless you prune un-needed old emails and especially attachments.
iCloud, AOL, and Yahoo are some of the popular services that can be configured to use IMAP.
iCloud (possibly others as well) is set to transfer your messages encrypted. I am not sure whether they are stored encrypted. -
I hae a brand new mac pro and the screen is blank during start up. ***...I can here instructions but can't see screen.
That Mac comes with 90 days free phone support from trained Applecare reps. You should take advantage of it.
Another alternative is to make an appointment at the Genius Bar and have them put their hands on it.
Be sure you do something before your 14-day return/exchange (if you bought it direct from Apple) expires, or you may face a 3 to 5 day repair cycle.
Shine a bright light at the screen when it has booted up.
¿ Is the picture "there" but not lit up? that could be a backlight failure.
The F2 key is used to turn up the brightness, if it accidentally got turned down low.
