My Mac Pro is constantly thinking.

I have a Mac Pro desktop that I use as my media center for our house. Often, it will start "thinking" (that clicking/ticking noise that you usually hear when it's starting an application or adjusting files) and won't stop for a VERY long time (last night it went on for about 5 hours). I have tried shutting down all applications that were open, I have tried looking at the Activity Monitor and have found nothing, and I have checked to make sure that there is no malware, yet the problem still persists. It is currently running OS X Lion with all the latest updates, however, this problem has existed on the machine with every OS version I've installed since Tiger.
Has anyone else had this issue? Found a solution? Aside from the constant noise being annoying, it really slows down my system which is not ideal when using this as a media center.
Here are my machine's details:
Purchased  Late December 2006
Processor  2 x 2 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Memory  2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB
Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)
Any help that anyone can provide would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Tim

you don't have enough memory for one
you should clone the system to a new drive, and have redundant backups
Lion? well 10.7.2 is probably okay. There is now no PowerPC code support
Use to be Disk Warrior was a must to maintain hard drives and directory

  • Late 2013 Mac Pro freezes constantly - GPU Hang

I've been having a very consistently recurring problem with my brand new Mac Pro freezing. I am unable to predictably reproduce the problem, unfortunately, which makes it hard to solve or troubleshot from the get go. Basically every time I boot up I get a full freeze of the machine anywhere from within the first 10 minutes to an hour of boot up... somewhere in that window usually. Whatever applications are open will freeze, including system OS and usually only the mouse will be able to move but I will not be able to click on anything or Force Quit or restart. My only option is to hard reboot by holding down the power button for several seconds.
It doesn't seem to be isolated to occurring with any one application being open. I use my computer primarily for audio recording and editing. I use Avid Pro Tools HD 11.2. It's a version of their software supported to run on Mavericks 10.9.3 which is what I am running. I use it with their HD Native Thunderbolt hardware. Other than a few drivers installed to run audio and MIDI interfaces connected to the machine, I don't have much else installed on the computer yet. I do have a few 3rd party audio plugins installed, however, these problems were occurring before I installed much of anything on the machine.
I've checked Console each time I have the freeze ups and scroll to the log at the time it occurred. Almost every time without fail I get basically the following message in the Console log:

It's almost always saying something about a "GPU Hang" at the time of freeze up. I don't know much about what the possible problem could be but some initial research led me to believe it was graphics card related. I thought that because I was running two monitors perhaps the connections there were fouling up somehow. I am running two identical monitors simultaneously. One runs off a regular HDMI cable. The other was via a 3rd party Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. I thought perhaps the non-Apple branded adapter I was using could be the culprit? The Apple Store (of course) agreed and sold me the Apple DVI to mini DisplayPort adapter. I swapped it out but it did not solve my issue. Still having the freezes. Sometimes after the freeze happens I'll also get a pop up warning that my external hard drive connected via USB was ejected improperly, even though I hadn't touched anything?? The whole thing goes haywire.
It's been doing this for a few months now. I've contacted Apple Care and spent an hour on the phone with them which resulted in making an appointment at a local Apple Store with a Genius. This was after they recommended that I reset both the SMC and the PRAM on the machine, neither of which solved the issue either. I took the machine in and they kept it for 48 hours to do a full stress test to see if they could determine the issue. No problems were found. They gave me the computer back and could not reproduce my problem.
The problem still exists. So that's why I'm writing on here, out of desperation because I have a brand new Mac Pro, under warranty, that is essentially useless. I have a follow up call into Apple Care to see what my next steps are but I haven't gotten a call back.
The only next steps I can imagine are to possibly update to Mavericks 10.9.4 to see if that might help even though Pro Tools is not yet supported by that OSX version yet. Or do a full clean re-install of OSX and all software on the computer (yikes!).
Or Apple needs to swap me a new machine. This is unacceptable.
    Anyone else having this issue??

  • Mac Pro Freeze constantly - no kernel panic, no crash reports. Any ideas?

    Dear all,
My good ol' Mac Pro (4.1-2009) which has been utterly reliable for years is now driving me cazy.
It freezes from time to time (let's say twice a day but sometimes not at all for 2 days in a row) - only possible option is hard reboot.
The screen just freezes, no kernel panic, no crash reports.
It has started after a ram replacement but then reverting to the original settings didn't change anything.
Tried all what possible: reverting to original ram (the Apple one), clean install on a new hard drive (10.8.4), replacing graphic card (4870 to 5770), Zap PRAM, resetting SMC, safe mode, clean new account, booting only with keyboard and mouse, Techtool Pro hardware tests-all passed (but not AHT as I can't find the original DVDs anymore), smc fan control, voodoo.
Some apps seem more enthusiastic at crashing than others especially Cinema 4D (when rendering), World of Warcraft (when playing), Photoshop CC (in OGL mode) but sometimes just dropping down a menu causes a freeze.
My eyes are full of tears.
Any idea? Someone had a similar experience?
    I might start drinking.
    Thanks.
    Mac pro 4.1 - 2009 - 2x2.26 quad xeon.
OS X 10.8.4 on a brand new hard drive.
    Ram 24 Gb (4/4/4/- 4/4/4/-)
    ATI 5770

Got a freeze but this time I also got a report! For some reason it makes me happy.
as I said, starting with just the keyboard and the mouse is enough to make this ****' machine freeze.

  • Aging Mac Pro constantly rebooting

My aging early 2008 Mac Pro is constantly rebooting, almost always when I'm away from the computer. When it reboots, I have to reset audio, which has defaulted to my MOTU Audio Express. The Mac Pro is exhibiting other odd symptoms: Occasionally, upon resumption from inactivity, the keyboard and mouse will have quit working. The Bluetooth Apple Magic Pad continues to function. A restart is the only fix. Also, occasionally, the Mac Pro will refuse to wake from sleep. Sometimes I must do a forced restart to get out of that. Other times, it will wake up on its own after a period of about 30 seconds.
It also seems to go into a harder sleep — rather than the monitors just lighting up as they usually do, it will hesitate a moment and the fans will cycle up loudly.
I was having similar issues months ago. I installed an SSD drive about six months ago, did a clean system install and migrated files over, and everything was working smoothly until the last week or so, and all the problems have resurfaced, with a vengeance. I reinstalled Mountain Lion, but that didn't help. I've considered another clean install or a Time Machine recovery from a month ago, but I really don't want to have to go through that every six months.
Any ideas? I'm half considering buying a new Mac Mini and using the pro as a file server or something.
Here is a copy of the report I get after the machine reboots.

Do you have TRIM Enabler? what SSD? how much free space? Have you ever done a secure erase and restore on the SSD? When you repair, are you booting from ML Recovery or from a full working system, a clone of your current system?
You might want a small 100GB volume somewhere with another clean install of ML 10.8.3 and with TRIM Enabler - I use my TimeMachine drive which has 800GB free. Also a 60GB sparse disk image of the SSD.
Putting your SSD on a PCIe 6G controller can help, though some have been known to cause corruption.
Repairing only touches the directory so it doesn't tell you if the entire file structure is okay.
A Safe Boot after repair is a good idea to do, then restart again.
How much faith do you have in the 8800GT? think it is time to replace and upgrade to a newer card, from Apple ATI 5770 or higher end AMD 7950 Mac Edition even.
Do you monitor system temps with something? how old are those FBDIMMs? Are they running 65* or less?
You should really have a clone and do a restore every 3 months or so. No need for TimeMachine method. Takes under an hour. And of course all your data is not on the SSD (well, the home library should which is  ~/Library where all mail and web and prefs are stored. But all data is not on SSD at all.

No reason or need for a Mini. Unless you want. Should be fine, though the 3,1's have been the most tempermental with Mountain Lion up until 10.8.3. And you might regret moving to mini if a new Mac Pro were to come out.

  • Mac Pro has slowed to a crawl - Please Help Me!

    Hello,
For some time now my Wireless or Wired Internet connection using my Mac Pro has slowed to almost nothing. For example, This page took 5 mins to load and now Internet use has become unusable.
I feel its my Mac Pro because all other Apple Computer run very fast wirelessly. I have (2) New iMac's (1) Apple TV and (1) Apple iPhone. All stream and surf the Internet blazingly fast.
My Mac Pro is constantly being redirected to other sites (mostly **** related) and a huge amount of Pop ups (even though pop ads are disabled in Safari). All Internet browsers perform the same on my Mac Pro or ANYTHING Internet related including WoW, Software updates or even iTunes Music Down loads.
I really feel that in some way (which is shocking) I am infected with "something" that is making my computer crawl on the Internet. Redirection of websites is just now very aggravating.
I am looking at the (2) Original Disks that came inside the Mac Pro Box. I'm seriously considering wiping my system clean and starting from scratch.
I currently hold NOTHING on my Factory 320GB HD other than programs.
I have installed (2) 1TB drives and created a RAID slice thus creating a single HD icon on my desktop that reads 1.8TB. Thats is where all my Music, Photos, and Movies reside.
    My question is....
When I wipe my system will that RAID be broken? Will I lose everything on those 2 drives or will using the restore CD's leave all that information in tact?
Please let me know before I proceed.
    Thank you for your time.
    John

Your RAID won't be touched. But back it up today if you haven't yet!
I use Firefox for security with noscript and some other filters, but I also hardened the router firewall to manually block services, ports and add rules - both incoming and outgoing.
You might want to look at LittleSnitch or NetBarrier and do some logging.
I've seen/heard where older routers and modems were fine, but not with Mac Pro or with Intel Macs in general and needed to be replaced or firmware updated. Problems with the latest updates for Airport have been seen by some, and worth checking into - on forums, news sites or hit google.
And of course check what processes are getting loaded and run; manually delete caches, history, metadata, even the bookmarks cache.
    ~/Library/Caches/Metadata
There are issues with fake Flash updates; normal sites (like CNN) suffering from SQL-injection. Best to run with javascript off for now.
Might want to look into ClamXav and other malware protection. But I would switch and see how Firefox and Opera behave. And turn off java, script, and plug-ins while you consider your options and try to find out why.

  • Upgrade Memory on 2009 4 core Mac Pro - Max? Non-ECC?

I've been doing research on what I can do to upgrade my RAM on my Mac Pro and I think I did something I wasn't supposed to do a while back.
During my last upgrade adventure, I apparently purchased and installed a 2GB stick of Non-ECC (PC3-8500 1066MHz) RAM to fill the one empty slot. The computer shipped with 3 bars of 1GB ECC memory.
Now, as I scan the web for info on what kind of memory I can get away with, everything I'm seeing says that you should not mix ECC and Non-ECC. But I've been running both for about a year now.
    So my questions:
    1. Should/can I use Non-ECC Memory?
    2. If so, should I not be mixing?
    3. What is the Max amount of memory my Mac Pro can handle? I'm seeing some info that says 4x2GB, and I'm seeing other info that says 4x4GB. Which is correct?
    Thanks.

When you get a lot of memory in a computer, it is more likely so suffer an occasional memory error. This can cause serious problems that can lie hidden for months. It can take a very long time to isolate the problem and find the bad component and remove it, and the damage may have propagated throughout the files on your Hard drive.
Use System Profiler \[About this Mac > More Info] and click the "Memory" category. You will see an indication of whether each DIMM is ECC, and also a main status of "ECC ON" or "ECC OFF".
You are very lucky to own a Mac that has additional Hardware to support Error Correcting Code ECC Memory. IF ECC is active, you get enormous peace-of-mind. Any single-bit errors will be corrected, and double bit errors will stop your Mac immediately -- long before the problem can contaminate anything else.
I suggest you use only ECC memories, and make certain ECC is always ON.
Apple does not currently sell 4GB DIMMs, but others do, as noted above. Most sellers of 4GB DIMMs also warn you that you cannot mix 4GB DIMMs with 1GB or 2GB DIMMs.

  • Mac Pro 2.0 outperforming Mac Pro 2.66, WHY?

Ok Guys, I am stumped here and hopefully someone can shed some light.
    I have 2 Mac Pros: System 1 - 2 x 2.66 with 9GB of memory and System 2 - a recently acquired 2 x 2.0 with 5 GB of memory.
System 1 has banks filled as follows:
    Riser A
    Bank 1: 2gb
    Bank 2: 2Gb
    Bank 3: 512
    Bank 4: 512
    Riser B
    Bank 1: 2gb
    Bank 2: 2Gb
    Bank 3: empty
    Bank 4: empty
In System 2, I installed snow leopard after reformatting a 500 GB WD (7200rpm)caviar drive w/16 MB cache. There is also a 2nd WD drive (1 TB, 7200 Rpm)
Having plans to upgrade the 2.O Mac pro, I decided to compare it against my "faster" Mac pro 2.66. I took a video file that is 1hr 23 mins. It took 56 mins to render in IDVD coming from ImovieHD. Knowing that the 2.66 is significantly faster than the 2.0, I was thinking it would take maybe 44 mins to complete on the Mac Pro 2.66... to my surprise it took 1 hr 49 mins.
Thinking that the benefits were due to snow leopard. I backed up the system, reformatted the drive and installed Snow leopard and all my apps on the Mac Pro 2.66. I did the same test, the performance was even worst - it took 2 hrs 3 mins. After dropping the F-bomb a couple times I started looking at other things.
The Mac Pro 2.6 has 2 x 1 TB 7200 drives the OS drive has a 32 GB cache the other drive a 16 Mb cache.
The memory in the 2.0 is configured as follows:
    Riser A
    Bank 1: 1gb
    Bank 2: 1Gb
    Bank 3: 512
    Bank 4: 512
    Riser B
    Bank 1: 512
    Bank 2: 512
    Bank 3: 512
    Bank 4: 512
The video files on both systems are located on the non-OS file but I create the disk image from IDVD to the desktop on the OS Volume. The workflow is identical on both systems.
Both video cards are the stock Nvidia 7300. All drives are 7200 rpm. Why is my Mac Pro 2.0 outperforming the MacPro 2.66 with almost twice as much memory? I even filled the two empty slots on the MAC pro 2.66 thinking that is why it was taking a hit, it did not help.
    Any good suggestions welcome.

    Some tidbits:
RAM should be in quad and paired across Risers.
4 x 2GB (or 4 x 4GB) is your best as far as memory bandwidth
6 DIMMs is not ideal (8 DIMMs properly paired is okay but higher latencies)
Higher density RAM also shows improvements.
HARD DRIVES are an easy investment and can be used in whatever system you need now or later.
7.2k drives are fine, yours are on the old side.
    Especially that 500GB model.
SATA III, latest models, show 20% improvement, 64MB cache
    4 WD Caviar Black 640GB @ $70 eachm or 1TB to 2TB ($85-170)
boot from one, and stripe the other two or three.
You probably aren't ready to throw SSDs in, nor do you want $200-275 for 10K WD VelociRaptors (300-600GB) which are fast and make nice drives for system, scratch, and of course in arrays.
Other throught - cpu upgrade project 5300: get a set of 5355s off ebay and have an 8-core frenzy for $400 the set.

Time to replace those 7300s, if they aren't ready to bulge and blow a capacitor already. Shame that there really are few choices, 5770 or... 5770.
OS drive should be lean, fast, and just OS and apps
    data or media drive
    editing drives
higher capacity drives w/ 64MB cache are a plus, just being 3rd generation of Caviar Black line improvements rather than 4 yr old 500GB 16MB cache model
+Tried to break-down and decipher your setup and results for my own use:+
    System 2
    Installed snow leopard
500 GB WD (7200rpm)caviar drive w/16 MB cache.
    2nd WD drive (1 TB, 7200 Rpm)
Mac pro 2.O against my "faster" Mac pro 2.66.
video file is 1hr 23 mins. It took 56 mins to render in iDVD coming from ImovieHD.

I work with a 2006 2.0 and a 2009 4-core 2.66GHz and the difference between the two is noticeable enough to consider upgrading my 1,1 to 5355s, 4 x 2GB (or more), and 5770, JUST so it can 'compete' on equal footing with $2k Mac Pro Special:

  • 2009 Mac Pro upgrading graphics card to GTX 680 mac. What is the best version of AE and PP and OSX to have?

    Hello,
    I have a 2009 Mac Pro 4.1
    Mac OSX version 10.6.8
    Processor - 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory - 24GB
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon HD 4870
I use After Effects and Premiere Pro daily for my work. I am not too technically minded. I want to update and improve my machine as much as possible and am thinking of buying an SSD drive to replace my current start up disk. I also am thinking about getting the GTX 680 mac version graphics card. I have read many online discussions regarding OpenCL and CUDA, many discussions with mixed feelings about the improvements the 680 gives an older Mac Pro - some people say it is amazing others say the improvements seem minimal or worse.
What I want to know is if I purchase the SSD and 680 graphics card what is the optimal OSX - 10.8 or 10.9? and what is the optimal versions of AE and PP to have - CS6 or CC? Also what settings and what additional drivers would I need to consider?
I contacted an independent authorised mac reseller and he thought it was a bad idea to put a new graphics card and get the latest OSX in an old machine and tried to sell me a used 2010 Mac Pro, but I think it would be more cost effective to get the SSD and 680 instead, it's just I read the occasional horror story on a forum and I worry about making the wrong choice, I rely on my Mac Pro to make a living!
    Thanks in advance

Thank you for the valuable information Eric, I think I will go with the 680 but I understand that it wont be fully utilised on my old Mac Pro.
Perhaps I will replace my startup/applications hard drive with a 480GB SSD. My other 3 bays are full with 3 x 2TB Hard drives that have media on them so I have no spare room for a dedicated SSD drive for AE cache. But could I put a 250GB SSD into one of the PCI-E slots using something like - SSD SuperSpeed Upgrade Kit for Apple Mac Pro 2008 2009 2010 2012 | eBay
Would this be my best solution? Is it a relatively simple installation, does anyone have any experience of a similar setup?
cc_merchant, thank you for the reply, I am aware you have to pay monthly payments for CC, that is no problem.

  • Moving from PC to Mac Pro

    Dear All,
Having switched my wife’s laptop for an Imac last year I am now considering switching my desktop to a mac pro. I love using the imac and have just finished my first dvd using imovie and idvd (family video for grandparents). The process was so smooth and convinced me to go down the mac route for myself.
However I have some concerns and would be very grateful if someone could help answer them. I will put them in bullet points for ease:-
    1. I have a cable modem from Virgin (UK) connected to a linksys wireless router and from there by cable to my PC by Ethernet cable. Will I be able to have the same set up with the mac pro?
    2. I have a 24inch display from HP. It has DVI, VGA and HDMI inputs. Will I be able to use this with the mac pro?
    3. I am a photographer and the above screen is calibrated for colour using an eye one. Will I be able to calibrate the screen when connected to a mac pro?
    4. As I said I am a photographer and currently have 4 external hard drives (3 usb2 and 1 Fire wire) connected to my PC. Will I be able to just unplug from the PC and replug into the mac pro and see my files?
    5. I have an iphone and extensive itunes library. Is it possible to switch these across to the mac pro without problems and loss of data?
    6. Finally, My pc has 4gb ram and a dual core 2.66mhz processor running vista. I assume there will be a dramatic speed increase with the mac pro?
I think that is all my major questions and concerns for now. As I said any help appreciated.
    Best regards
    Josh

    Hi Josh,
    1. should be no problem. I have a similar setup (with a Netgear instead of the Linksys) and since in Germany another provider.
    2. Should work quite fine using the DVI-connection since both the GT120 and the 4870 come with a DVI-port.
    3. To my knowledge the Eye One includes a OSX-compatible version of their calibration software and the hardware is compatible.
    4. Mac OSX can read and write to/from harddisk that use the FAT32 file system. Also OSX can read from harddisks that use the NTFS file system, but can only write to them with additional software like NTFS-3G or Paragons NTFS for MAc.
    5. Should be no problem, although I am not that knowledgeable with it. I always had my iTunes library with Mac and besides only have self-made mp3s from my CD-library.
    6. Very likely. The Mac Pro is what they say "Beauty outside. Beast inside."
    Hope it helps
    Stefan

  • Why are the Mac Pro's dropping their server connection over a PC network.

This seems to be a common thread on the discussion, but I can't find a resolution. I have a mix of G5s and Mac Pro's all running 10.4.10. All the machines are set to manual 100BaseT Duplex. The Mac Pro's constantly drop their network connections or show write errors when you are trying to save. Can someone point me in the direction of the answer? thanks.

  • 3.0 causes BSOD in Windows 7 on Mac Pro

I just did my third reinstallation of windows 7 on my mac pro and I think I've narrowed the bsod problem to the 3.0 bootcamp drivers. Every time I go to install steam, which is really the only reason I use windows, It gives me the bsod. The bsod references something about HFS drives. Or maybe it's my graphics card. I did put in the GTX 285 from EVGA. Does anyone else have this issue? Anyone find a fix? Will 2.1 work?

been running windows 7 for 2 weeks
when using the graphics drivers that come with bootcamp3.0
i initially encountered video playback freezing the system
but after i download windows 7 drivers from nvidia, it seems ok now
perhaps you could try that first?

    Hi
I want to upgrade my graphics card as high as I can go on my machine (details below). Any advice? I use two (aluminium enclosure) 24" cinema displays, so need two DVI ports.

Good that the 4870 works in any Mac Pro, but I think at the end of the day, you may find that Motion and FCP would run better with 2009/2010 model.

  • Erasing and reinstalling my mac pro hard drive

I have an older Mac Pro (2006 I think).
I want to erase and reinstall the hard drive. Once the disk is clean, is there a way to install OS directly to mountain lion? Or will I have to install from an ealier complete set of physical disks?

If it shipped with 10.4 and is a 2007 or earlier Mountain Lion is not supported, only up to Lion.
You download and save the Lion installer first and would need to have 10.6.8 to access the App Store.
Leave what you have as is, and just install a new system to another of the drive bays.

  • Building the ultimate Mac Pro for Lightroom

I am looking at upgrading my current Mac Pro or buying a new Mac Pro with the specific goal of making Lightroom faster.
My problem is that I use a PhaseOne P45+ back and rendering each file at 100% takes approximately 12 seconds. I could do a blanket 1:1 render but then my catalogue would be huge.
Here's my question; which part of my Mac Pro is most involved with the rendering?
    Processors
    RAM
    Graphics card
    Hard disk
I currently have a first generation Mac Pro and was thinking of either doing the following upgrade:
Increase ram from 7GB to 16GB.
Create a RAID 0 hard disk from 2 of the Intel X25M solid state drives (new G2 models) and have the catalogue and cache on that drive (obviously it will be backed up frequently)
Replace my graphics card with a Radeon 4870.
If I bought a new Mac Pro then I would still carryout the above modification but I would have the benefit of 8 cores instead of 4 and the RAM is faster. However, I am reluctant to spend the additional capital if the increase in performance is minimal.
My second question therefore is; does Lightroom 2.4 take full advantage of a new Mac Pro's 8 cores?
    Thanks!

A single OWC Mercury Extreme Pro RE SSD will pretty much max out a SATA2 port so any caddy that puts two of those SSDs on one port becomes pointless.
There are two extra unused SATA ports on the motherboard that could be used with the Trans Intl. DX4 Mounting Station. This is probably your best option for maximizing as many of your internal SATA ports for storage HDs as possible.
I don't know if its true for the 2009 and later Mac Pros, but in the 2008 and earlier ones the limiting factor for RAID bandwidth was the Enterprise Southbridge Interface which was limited to 1 GB/s.

  • Video card suggestions for Mac Pro early 2007 (Rev a)

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro Dual Quad Core. I bought it in March of 2007 so it is a certain type of Mac Pro. I think they call it Rev A.
I want to put in a more up to date video card that is really nice and works with 3d and after effects.
What are my choices for video cards? Am I limited to certain cards because of the year I bought my Mac Pro? I don't have the money to go up to the really nice $1000 dollar cards but I'd like a real nice ATI card. I think I'm done with Nvidia. They keep burning up.
    Thanks!

    Hey Stephan,
One more question and this will be solved. I'll rep you again of course . I know that nVidia cards cannot do SLI in OS X. I have two and was super disappointed when I bought my first mac (this one) to learn that this option is not available.
Are ATI cards any different? They have the Crossfire capability and since they seem more supportive of Apple products, I was wondering if they also can support the Crossfire capability.
    Thanks,
    Spiral
