My Mac Pro is dead...how dead is it?

Early 2008 Mac Pro Tower. On start up, displays 7 vertical lines through the apple screen, like a bar code. I have a couple internal start-up drives, holding option key and choosing a different drive still gets me the lines, wont proceed to the desktop. Starting on a windows drive (bootcamp) kinda freezes, doesnt get to an apple screen. I'm gonna check the logic board battery now, assuming that's ok, I'm thinking it must be a failed Logic Board or Video Card. I have a Nvidia 285GTX if I remember right, the fastest card I could find. Any ideas, anyone seen this before?
Any hints would be appreciated
ps, it has the latest OS on the main drive, and older OS's on the other drives

HI Jim, maybe dont give up on it yet. Try the following procedure before you pack it up in the box and take it to an apple tech. My Apple macpro tech told me the following... this may shake it up and it may kick over ok. Its worth a look
power down and remove the power cable from the back of the mac
remove all the cards in the PCIE slots .. including the Graphics card in slot 1
remove all the disk drives in BAY1-BAY4
remove the memory riser cards (yep simple to do)
optionally but worth it (pull out the memory DIMMS and reseat them again . you never know)
try and remove the CR3032 battery that on the main board. IF its old, go buy a new one and replace it. else leave it out for a 30secs and replace the CR3032 battery (this saves do a +P+R at startup)
now with the POWER CABLE STILL NOT connected to the MAC PRO, PRESS and HOLD in the POWER BUTTON for 5-10 seconds and release it.This will help discharge the P/S caps apparently
NOW... put the power cable back in and POWER ON without any cards or memory or disks in. It wont go anywhere..
Power it off again
NOw insert all the GRPAHICs PCIE card in SLOT 1 only (leave the others for now), and a insert a SINGLE DISK that has the production OSX on it (leave the other disks out unless you have a RAID CARD for the internal disks)... DONT attach any other IO devices other than the screen and keyboard etc to teh MAC PRO just yet
Ready?... now HOLD THE POWER BUTTON IN FOR 20 SECONDS until you seethe LED bower flash AND it makes a SQUEALING sound. This will reset the system management controller.
See if the MAC PRO will power up for you.
IF it works, shut it down and put in the remainder of the DISK bays and PCIE cards and the other external I/O devices. YOu may want to do this serially and power up and down to make sure its not one of these components that is contributing to the error.
This procedure has worked a few time for my colleague and I ove rthe years, especially of the machine has been left unused for a while and or it has been moved and bumped.
I hope this helps. If that fails, you best bet it to get it looked at by a TECH. Could be the P/S, the roser boards or the main board..... I just went through this myself in Februrary with a dodgey colling tower sensor on CPU-B on my 2009 MAC PRO. It was easy for Apple to find. Didnt cost too much to fix and they did it in a day here in Hong Kong Apple Store... great service I must say

If you mean the drive is locked then see:
Fix Permissions for a Locked Drive
Open Terminal in the Utilities folder. Paste the following at the prompt. Press RETURN after each. The first command will prompt for you to enter your admin password. It will not be echoed to the screen. After entering your password press RETURN again.
sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
killall finder
An alternative is to download BatChmod and use it to fix the permissions.

Mac Pro mysteriously dead

My Mac Pro (2008 8-Core) seems to be mysteriously dead.
When I power it on, I hear the startup chime, see the power light on the front, and I hear everything rev up (fans, optical drive, hard drive) but no video appears.
I tried booting from the system CD holding down C; same thing. I tried replacing the video card; same thing. I tried Firewire Target Disk mode to another Mac: the other Mac sees the 8-core in System Information>Firewire, but no drives mount, not even in Disk Utility. I tried zapping PRAM, but it does nothing. (Holding down command-option-P-R does not cause the chime to happen multiple times.)
HELP! Anything left to try?

Pull your hard drive(s). Your disk drive or directory is too corrupt and you need
a new boot drive for now
try reformat and restore the old one later on
The first thing would be Recovery Mode.
And if you use Carbon Copy Cloner you can clone the system and recovery partition to another drive just in case a drive fails.
A really bad directory can interfere with booting. From any media. Put drive in FW case and don't turn it on until the system boots from another disk drive or DVD (I never use DVDs after once installed).
With the drives pulled if you still have trouble, then it is likely hardware.

Kernel Panic Mac Pro now dead!!!

Big problem here:
Kernel Panic - but system totally locked out of any key combination apart from Hardware test on Install Disk 1 (OS X 10.4). Hardware test (loop running 12 hours) finds NO problems.
Have swapped out RAM, swapped out HDD, tried to boot using install (shift key gives me the bootable options) but Kernel Panic at every attempt.
Nothing has been loaded extra, and even running with new HDD and RAM teh system still locks out in Kernel Panic.
Before sending this back to shop - any ideas out there??
Help would be massively appreciated guys - been using a Mac since 1988 - first time I've been stumped!!!!

thanks for the response - I will get onto the right forum as suggested for teh MacPro! Must have been finger trouble!
I have swapped out the RAM and the HDD - so I am left with Kernel code and PRAM (which has been zapped).
I will be buying my first diagnostices Apple software later today (Techtool Pro) and using a Firewire lead to remove all my files from the MacPro.
18 years of trouble free computing - using everything from a Mac Classic through all models (incliding a G5 - just sold) and never a problem I couldn't fix within twenty minutes.
Intel has a LOT to answer for and I am now considering a move away from Apple.

your problem could be from a bunch of things, you
went threw most of the process of elimination tho
and you haven't found a fix, my sudjestion would be
to take it to apple and have them repair or or
replace it. cause what ever that is its not sounding
good.
so you removed all but one stick of ram and tried it
and if that fails take the other one out and put
another one back and test them all to see if they do
the same thing. also i have seen HDD's going bad

Mac Pro 1,1 how to troubleshoot no graphics output, no video output

Mac Pro 1,1 OS 10.7.5
Bootup sounds normal but the Apple Cinema Display (ACD) is black. Same result in Safe Mode. The ACD works perfectly when cable is switched over to either of 2 MacBook Pro. Thinking it might just be failed graphics card I brought back from USA to NZ a Radeon X1900 XT PCIE 512M. To my delight, when I installed the X1900 the video out was normal (2 weeks ago). I did a bit of testing over an afternoon, then shutdown the MP and offered it for sale.
With a buyer awaiting shipment I setup the MP again to wipe drive and pack. No graphics again. Safe Mode, same result. ACD still tests fine (I've been using it 100% as MBP monitor). There's no point in sending MP down to Auckland to the only recommended service agent. Their fees will exceed the market value.
Any thoughts on how I should troubleshoot this?

Update: This case is getting more confusing and complex. Following my last update I succeeded to get the Mac Pro to boot in Safe Mode. Then I booted normally twice. Things were looking up so I started working on wiping a drive to package with the MP for sale. I ran Geekbench OK and Stress Test for 15min OK then left the MP powered overnight. This AM the MP was unresponsive. The ACD light was still on. After forcing shutdown and reboot I see a kernel panic log. Below are the first few lines through the non-Apple kext.
Next on the MacPro I inserted a security-erased drive, then SuperDuper cloned the working boot drive system and the admin-user. That new semi-clean boot drive would not startup. Neither would the source of the clone -- the drive that I had been successfully booting. I tried various Lion bootable disks and startup keys for a couple of hours. One boot worked in Safe Mode but not on the next 2 tries. Did the PRAM reset voodoo etc.
What should I do now?

My mac pro has died, how can I see my emails on my macbook

My Mac Pro has died. I intend to get it repaired, obviously, but I need to see my emails from the many years of emails archived on its undamaged hard drive. I have removed the hard drive and connected it to my macbook using a USB carrier. I can find myself under the users, but the library file where the mail folder is kept remains hidden, so I can't copy it across.
What can I do to get my emails useable again immediately?
I posted this before but on a Macbook discussion and got no useful reply.
It surely is possible to do this isn't it?

In Finder select Go, then hold the option key.
You will now see Library. Select it and navigate to Mail.
emails are in V2 Folder

To keep it seperate from the Mail already on this Mac, I would set up another user account (->System Preferences->Users & Accounts), and then log into the new account. Quit Mail, Delete ~/Library/Mail in the new account and copy Mail from the other Mac.

Mac Pro 1.1 How to control PSU fan

I have an upgraded (2 x X5355 8 core) Mac Pro 1.1 running 10.7.4. I routinely use SMCFanControl (the latest version) to ramp up the fans when I am running long, CPU-intensive jobs. However, SMCFanControl only changes three of the four fans - the PSU fan remains stuck on 600rpm, regardless of the settings. My PSU is getting pretty hot - 70+C, so I am looking for a way of cranking it up. Any suggestions will be greatfully received.

That's a good question. It's been a while since I've run my 1,1 Mac Pro, but I remember that smcFanControl could change everything but the PS fan (which is at the front of the PS brick, right behind the DVD drives - I just took the cover off and doublechecked). On my current Mac Pro, which has the same DVD/PSU layout, smcFanControl can control all the fans.

Need advice on what Mac Pro to purchase/how much ram

Hi.. this is my first post...
I have been a Logic user for--15 years??-- and love the program. I have been using only pcs and now have to switch to Mac because, well..... we all know why....
Here's my question....
With a certain amount of cash to spend ( using Logic pro/ express ), and a lot of audio samples to crunch, am I better off::::
1.---buying the more expensive 3.0 ghz Mac pro with, say, 3 gigs of ram or,
2.---buying the cheaper 2.7 ghz Mac pro and use the savings to load up with more ram memory?
I lean towards the #2 just because 'they' say more ram is good. Up to now all my pc's were just stock and they ran, more or less, fine with few problems. Mind you, I was using midi exclusively..no audio files at all.
I will be recording only one live instrument ( a flugelhorn---brass instrument ) so that's about it!!
Any guidance would be appreciated..

Well, the old computer saying goes, "buy the fastest computer you can afford, at that time"... or something like that...
That being said, a new 2.7 Mac Pro ain't a shabby beast, by anyones standards.
3 gigs of RAM is pretty good... for now. But in anticipation of the new OS Leopard, and the inevitable rewriting of Logic that will take place (or is currently in progress), to allow it to access more than 4 gigs of RAM... more RAM wouldn't hurt either. You'd be putting yourself in a position to be able to take advantage of those advancements, when they occur.
So, my 2 cents is with you... a 2.7 Mac Pro with more RAM (maybe 6 to 8 gigs worth...? ) looks quite nice.

There are still benefits to more RAM when working with files that can grow or take up more memory even though you are not using 64-bit kernel, but still able to run CS6 as a 64-bit application.
people have outfitted their MacPro1,1 with more than 16GB to full 32GB to improve performance. That along with SSD for scratch and another for system (or use an array for scratch, though memory is your best "scratch") and of course an array for loading files and for your save volume (2GB files taking too many seconds?).

First, if you have a MACBOOK PRO (a laptop), you should post in that forum. MAC PRO (desktop) and Macbook Pro are different things, so when you use those terms interchangeably, it's impossible to know what you're talking about.
Second, even guessing that you have a laptop, I still have no idea what your question means. Are you trying to load Microsoft Windows on it? Every Mac can run Windows using either Boot Camp or Parallels/Fusion/VMWare solutions. Please explain in more detail what you're trying to do, and we'll try to help. But post in the Macbook Pro forum if you're talking about a laptop.

How to specify which Ethernet port on a Mac Pro to send an Ethernet packet

Hi,
I am doing some development on a Mac Pro. The Mac Pro has two Ethernet ports on the rear: Ethernet 1 and Ethernet 2.
I want to specify which of these ports I send a UDP Ethernet packet from.
In my code I currently create a socket and send data through this. This works fine, but the data (packet) always seems to come out of Ethernet port 1 on the rear of the Mac Pro.
So, how / where do I set in my code which port (Ethernet 1 or Ethernet 2) on the back of the Mac Pro to send my packet out of?

You are due for a new build or pre-built, most definitely.
you should be able to hit score of 14k on 6-core w/o trouble.
And for what you can get for £1799 - £2099 I think you could build one, but start with quality parts and go with a solid foundation that will be supported for years. As long as you don't need OS X as it stands.
the mac pro use to shine when it came to dual processor setups. Custom built dual PCs can be another matter, and not for faint of heart.
Choose current socket support, processor, and motherboard and you really are set for years and can upgrade from there.
