my mac pro seems to be running slower today than it was friday, i purchased it used an don't have disc or password

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It is not safe to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1a. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Some models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you may not be able to reinstall 10.6 even from the original discs, and Internet Recovery may not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
1b. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
2. Partition and install OS X
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In thePartition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
3. Other issues
If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • My MacBook Pro seem to be running slower since the last lion update, anybody else?

Since the update of the Lion software my Macbook Pro is running rather slow and the pinwheel appears quite often, anyone else having this issue.  Any suggestions for solution?

This is from an a brody recent post:
Backup your data if you want to isolate all the possible reasons.
    Depending on what is slow:
    1. The hard drive may be close to capacity.  85% is the maximum most Macs can run at without exceeding it.
    2. It may have insufficient RAM.
    3. It may have a damaged directory.
    4. Your use of so-called maintenance tools may actually be corrupting system caches.  Onyx, and Macaroni are all tools that should only be
used by experts who know when they should be used if at all.  MacKeeper shouldn't be used at all.
    5. You have a dying hard drive.
    6. You have a router not compatible with your operating system.
    7. You have a peripheral not compatible with your operating system.
    8. You have a firewall that isn't routing internet traffic properly.
    9. You have some incompatible software.
So tell us when you are backed up, and what is slowing down, and maybe we can help you isolate the problem."

I recently updated? to Lion from 10.6.8(snow leopard), and things seem to be running slower.  Has anyone had similar problems?  I have Feb 2011 Macbook pro 13" 2.3 Ghz.

As Shootist pointed out, the system uses more power.
However, initially it will reindex the hard drive for spotlight, which will slow things down temporarily.
It also must rebuild caches that eventually will speed things up.
If it has completed indexing the hard drive (no dot pulsing in the spyglass), then there might be something wrong.
Start by booting into the Recovery HD (a partition created with Lion that has Disk Utility and reinstallation options) by holding down cmd-r when you restart. You can let go when the gray screen appears.
When it boots, select Disk Utility and Repair the drive.
If that doesn't speed things up, try re-installing the OS from the same Recovery HD. It won't delete any of your files, but it has helped some people whose Macs ran slow after installing Lion.
Also, how much memory do you have? Lion needs RAM so maxing your Mac out might also help.

  • My MacBook Pro is three years old and seems to be running slower. Ideas of what to do?

My MacBook Pro is three years old and seems to be running slower. Any ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are actually shell commands -- little programs. They’re harmless, but they must be used exactly as given in order to work.
First and most important, don’t run these commands until you have verified that they’re legitimate. Never execute shell commands from an untrusted source without knowing what they do, or at least that they don’t do anything harmful. I’ve posted these same commands, with minor variations, many times on this site. You should be able to find other discussions in which they were used without ill effects. Do that before proceeding.
Some of the commands will probably line-wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search.
    Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
    Step 4
    ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address will appear in the output of the above command. Change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • My iMac seems to be running slower lately. Is there anyway to make it run faster?

My iMac seems to be running slower than when I first bought it. Is there something I can do to make it running faster? Also can anyone recommend a good antivirus software for Mac. Thanks.

The best antivirus application is none at all, keep OS X up-to-date and educate yourself about Malware by reading Viruses, Trojans and Malware - Prevention and removal: Apple Support Communities.
In order to speed up your iMac we need to know some basics about it first such as what version of OS X is installed, exactly which iMac you own, how much RAM it has, what size is the HD and how much free space on the HD. Without those fundamentals we would only be guessing.

  • IMac G5 intel core 2 duo Mac OS 10.6.8 running slow

iMac G5 intel core 2 duo Mac OS 10.6.8 running slow.
It was bought over a year ago on eBay, and I don't have the original install discs.
Recently simple tasks take ages and I see the spinning beack ball alot.
I ran disk utilities, varified and repaired permissions, with the conclusion that there are errors and "disk needs to be repaired".
Without the original install discs, is there anything I can do?
    Many thanks, Brion

    Hello K
Thank you for that. It does make perfect sense. And I was quite surprised when the guy at Apple Care said that store bought OS discs are the equal equivalent of the original grey discs. However, I was also kinda relieved, because I have the Snow Leopard discs and I don't have the original grey discs, so at least I have a chance of fixing the problem.
To clarify, I am not intending to upgrade the OS. The iMac originally came with 10.4. It was upgraded to 10.6 when I purchased it on eBay for £220. Now, 14 months later, after working perfectly well, it has developed some minor errors and has become sluggish. Running Disk Utilities, it seems the disk needs to be repaired by starting up from something other than the iMac harddrive. I had thought that meant the grey discs. But Apple tell me I can reboot from the Snow Leopard disk and repair the iMac that way. That isn't the same as ignoring the problem and reinstalling a new OS on a corrupt harddrive.
BUT, I haven't done it yet. When I reboot from the Snow Leopard disc, I'm hoping I get more options then simply 'INSTALL'. Apple Care tell me that I will be able to navigate my way to Disk Utility. I hope they are right.
Wish me luck, and thank you again for taking the time to help me out. I really appreciate it.

Adobe Creative Cloud - has anybody had any luck running Adobe CC on a new mac mini? Does it run slow for Photoshop?

Adobe CC applications are very large and the base Mac mini isn't a good choice because it has only 4GB of RAM and has a slow standard hard drive. To get the most out of ACC you should upgrade the mini to at least 8GB. I'd also choose an SSD or Fusion drive for better performance.

I have a MAC Pro from 2011 currently running MAC OS 10.9.5.  This weekend I cloned the MAC HD drive to a new SSD drive for improved performance.  The clone was completed successfully with no errors.  After the clone completed I successfully restarted my system using the SSD as the boot device.  I then successfully tested all of my products, including Photoshop CS6 and all of its plug-ins.  I successfully tested the key features that I frequently use.  Today while attempting to launch Photoshop CS6 a message is being displayed indicating that a scratch disk cannot be found.  All drives are available on the system via the Finder and Disk Utility.  I can access all drives including the old MAC HD which is no longer the boot device.  I've even attempted to launch Photoshop from the old device yet the same error persist.  Is there a way to review/edit/change Photoshop preferences if Photoshop doesn't launch?  I've even restarted my system several times to see if that would resolve the issues.  Does anyone have any recommendations for this issue?  Have you previously address this issue?
    Thank you Gregg Williams

  • Mac 10.5.8 is running slow and programs are disappearing

    Hi guys,
I actually have more than one problem with my Mac:
For one it is running slow especially when using Firefox and Office at the same time often resulting in me having to force quit the programs because they are not responding.
Lately applications are disappearing. First Stickies which is really! bad, because, stupid as I am, I put important info on them and did not make a backup. I tried to restore them via Time Machine but find nothing under ~Library/.StickiesDatabase, ...Application Support... or ...Preferences/com.apple.Stickies.plist
Then Preview disappeared which, luckily i could restore via Time Machine.
And now iCal looks different in dock (the white square surrounding the actual date disappeared) so I am guessing this  soon will be gone as well.
Another info that probably is important: my battery is swollen so generally I use the Mac without the battery
Do you think this is a virus? Or maybe 10.5.8. is just too old a version? Do you think an upgrade to at least 10.6. would help or rather worsen things? And is it worth it to invest in an upgrade, a new battery, a complete check-up or should I just wait until the poor thing dies and get a new one (which would be really painful)?
