My Mac Pro will read thumb-drive but not CF card reader

Can someone help me resolve this problem?
I just erased everything off my Mac Pro and reconfigured everything (as new). I installed all my programs, primarily Aperture3 and Photoshop CS5
(using Leopard).
I had NO problem uploaded some photos into Aperture3 from a thumb drive using the USB port, BUT,
when I tried to upload photos from my card reader the MacPro does not recognize the card reader using the same USB port.
I figured the problem was a bad card reader, so I tested it on my PC and it recognized the card reader and uploaded all the photos.
Also, the card reader's green light turns on when attached to the MacPro, as if it is working and connected but it does not register in Finder or desktop to indicate that the card reader is installed.
I even tried to upload directly from my Canon 7D and it also did NOT recognize the camera.
Why would the MacPro recognize the thumb drive on the same USB port and not the card reader or the camera?
Please help!

  • Mac Pro will connect to internet but not network with other systems

I have an iMac in my studio reception and a Mac pro and Macbook in my office. All three systems can connect to the internet but the Mac Pro has stopped networking with the iMac. However the iMac can network with the Pro. I have an ethernet cable connection to the Pro (no wi fi card) and I have a wireless router on the iMac which has enabled me to connect the Pro to other systems through wi fi. I also have a PC laptop and the Pro can connect to it via wi fi. Everything was networking properly several weeks ago and as far as I am aware I have not changed any settings. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this annoying little problem.

    Hello there, WoodenToy.

    Sorry for the delay...
I did what you've told me, new account and manually copied my files from Time Machine. I had lots of permissions problems, but at the end, almost everything is in order... It seems it had to be with some of the Apple Preferences, but I can't be sure, as most of them were dumped to the trash can.
I still don't have my Mail Rules back, unfortunately, although I did goggled some. It is a pity, as I had around 30 or 40 of them, getting my mail in order to each of its mailboxes, but it is a small price as the rest doesn't show the before syntoms.
    Thanks for the help, anyway!!

  • My mac mini will connect via airport but not via ethernet.

I have had a mac mini for several months which I connect via ethernet because it is in a part of my house where the wireless signal is poor. I changed ISP and now I can connect to the router wirelessly but not via ethernet. This doesn't seem to be a problem with the network as the connection works when I connect it to my mac book. Firewall is turned off. There were no major changes to the router settings other than changing the ISP login codes.
Any ideas? Is this a configuration issue or a hardware problem?

    Hi Mick,
If your router only supports 10/100 ethernet then it is possible that the auto-detect feature is not working properly to adjust to that speed. The mini has a Gigabit ethernet port. The OS by default sets the port to automatically negotiate the rate but it does not always work and the result is the problem you are having.
To fix it you wlll have to manually set the rate to 100.
To do this, open your system preferences, Select Network. Highlight the ethernet port on the sidebar, click the advanced button. Click on the Ethernet Tab, set the configure pop-up menu item to 100baseTX and click the ok button. If all works out you should see that the Ethernet port icon should turn green.
    Hope this helps.

  • Macbook Pro Will 'Tap to Click' but not 'Normally Click'

Hello, my Macbook Pro is not allowing me to click at all now. I can only 'Tap to Click' but when i physically press down on the Touchpad, the Mac doesn't accept it.
    I don't know what i should do.
Is my only option to take it to the Genius Bar?
    Thanks,
    --André

    Hi,
I think I have the same issue (new mbpro 15'' jan 2009), the normal "physical" click behaves very strangely, sometimes works sporadically, then doesn't work anymore at all. I had to enable the "tap to click" in order to be able to click :/
I can remember there was a firmware update at the very beginning for this glass trackpad because of those missing clicks and it seemed to be solved. But now, several months after, this seems to be worst than before: I sometimes enter this state with no physical click at all !
André, could you please keep us informed about the feedback you get from Apple if any ? Thanks a lot (I keep on trying finding something about it on the web but unfortunatly I always get articles from Nov 2008 about the 1st missing click issue that leaded to the firmware update... :/)

  • Aperture 3.3.1 Import fails on hard drives, but not SD cards (bug??)

After countless hours of research and attempting the A3: Troubleshooting Basics (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805), I have found a weird bug that I can reproduce.
If you import images, the import window will show some folders on a hard drive (and the corresponding images inside them) and not others. These exact images are viewable on an SD card. When clicking on a folder, it says "Loading Assets" for a second and then shows nothing. It doesn't matter what brand of camera, when the photos are taken, which hard drive. (Import is set to not exclude anything either).
I have tried the entire Troubleshooting Basics guide (creating a new library, using the first aid tools, deleting preferences, even a fresh install A3). I even tried different hard drives (all Mac formatted and have worked with Aperture before). Lastly, I even tried my other Macs with fresh copies of A3.3.1.
The final test was rolling back. I deleted all the old Aperture files (app, plists, etc...) and loaded Aperture 3.1 Trial that I had laying around. Surprisingly, it found the images as normal. However, once the AppStore updated to 3.1.1.... same behavior.
    Any suggestions?

It was just a coincidence   Sorry, iTunes!
The problem was, that a broken file on my Desktop messed up the Import panel.
As soon as I add a certain empty PDF file with the name "119435-45-55 [6L].pdf" to my Desktop, strange things will happen with the Import panel on all three of my Macs running MacOS X 10.9.3 and Aperture 3.5.1. It took me a while to identify the file, because Aperture does show the filename as empty and does not show a preview.
The Import window will be messed up -
missing icons from the Toolbar and Import settings pane,
the File Chooser will be empty,
the busy indicator will show "Loading assets", and the Activity Window "Building Thumbnails"
The thumbnail of the corrupted file will be empty and the filename is showing as empty,
When I switch to list view, all text will be upside down as shown in my original post.
The problem is not caused by the brackets in the filename; if I rename the file, Aperture is still acting up. The file cannot be opened in Preview either.

  • PDX index works in adobe reader 9.4 but not in adobe X !!

Hello I have some commercial genealogy DVD's, bought a few years ago, with PDX files on them that work fine with adobe reader  9.4  but not in  adobe reader X.   Adobe reader X says they are invalid PDX index files. Ofcourse adobe says that version X is Backward compatible and I must contact the vendor of my dvd's !!!.
Does anybody else has this problem ?
I do not have the pro version so I cannot rebuild the indexes myself.

PS for now I have removed version 10 and re-installed version 9.4

Any advice is appreciated

How certain are you the superdrive ONLY is at fault?
That depends on your skill level, if you grew up tearing things apart and putting them together, its absurd how easy it is.
For some however its too daunting.   On a general skill level for the "average" person its about a 3 out of 10 in difficulty.
    Can you order same? yes.

I tightened all HD screws and it didn't help. With the machine running and side of the case off, I physically stopped both the video card fan and the front case fan with my finger for a couple seconds and the noise continued. I also took all hard drives out one by one and rebooted each time. Again, the noise continued until I took out the Mac HD in Bay 1, rebooted, and I had a very quiet, silent machine. The issue is the hard drive in bay 1 that shipped with the computer, it's without a doubt causing the hum/woosh sound. I still need to know if I can safely swap the Mac HD from bay 1 to bay 4 without any issues to the operating system. I would like to try that to see if it dampens the noise but I also want to make sure this swap won't screw up my machine at all.

  • Mac Pro will boot but won't restart.

When waking up or doing a soft boot my Mac Pro will chime and sound like it's booting but the display will never come on.
If I do a cold boot, or even hold down the power button to force it off and then boot it's fine. I've tried turning on and off and plugging and unplugging the monitor. I've repaired permissions and reset the SMC and PRAM. It's been happening for a while, but now I want to install MacFUSE and it requires a restart to finish installing.

    Which model Mac Pro? GHz?
    How much RAM?
    What display card? What display?
What USB devices (these have a strong reputation for interfering with sleep)
    What FireWire devices?

tried on a different mac. The same problem exists.
If that is the case, its extremely unlikely you have a bad USB cable on the seagate, rather as I mentioned earlier a bad SATA bridge card.
If the Seagate 1TB USB external wont open on either Mac and youve verified same (try a diff. USB cable if you have one however this is nearly never the case),....then to get the data off that HD (unless it is dead which is also extremely unlikely),......then you would need to extract the HD from its case and insert same into either a HD dock or USB HD enclosure.
8 out of 10  seemingly dead inopperable 1-3+ year old external HD are perfectly fine, rather the cheap 50 cent SATA bridge card fries and dies (alas)
reply back if you need help in extracting same.

  • 2009 Mac Pro will not boot up under Windows

I have an Early 2009 Mac Pro system (Mac Pro 4,1) and I've had this system for 3 years already and have been working under OS X with this system ever since I purchased it.
However, when I tried to boot off my Windows disk, something very interesting happens. The Mac Pro WILL NOT boot up off the Windows disk or a known working Windows partition if two monitors are connected. Upon holding down the option key and selecting the Windows partition, I will get a black screen on one monitor (the one connected via Mini Displayport) and the other screen receives no signal and will enter standby and the system is halted. It does not respond to keystrokes, there is no hard drive activity, no measured power increase on the UPS, no apparent network activity, nothing. The only way to exit this scenario (from what I can tell) is to power off the machine, disconnect the display on DVI, power on the machine again, select the Windows partition wait for the system to reach the login window and reconnect the DVI monitor (at which time Windows recognizes it immediately and the system works fine again).
My question to the community is, does anybody know why this is happening and is there a known fix for this? Quite frankly, having to disconnect a monitor just to restart is very tedious and frustrating.
I have two Samsung P2350 monitors attached to an ATI Radeon HD 4870 (512MB, from Apple). One is monitor is connected via directly DVI and the other is using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter. Both monitors work fine under OS X with no issue. At first, I thought that this may be a driver issue on the Windows side and after installing all the latest updates and drivers the issue is still apparent. From what I can tell, this doesn't seem like a software issue but rather a firmware or EFI issue as this happens before Windows even loads.
If anyone knows of a fix or what to do in this situation, or if you are also having this issue, I would love to hear your input!
    Thank you!
For the record, I am running all the latest software builds on the OS X side (10.7.4, not that it would really matter at this point). I have also disconnected all unnecessary equipment in a trial and error scenario but the results are still the same.
The system passes all ASD testing.
The full specification of the computer and all connected equipment are as follows:
    2009 Mac Pro (4,1) 8-Core
    2x Intel Xeon Nehalem 2.66GHz Quad-Core CPUs
    16GB DDR3 ECC 1066MHz RAM (Apple Branded)
Two OWC 120GB SSDs (One for OS X, the other for Windows 7 x64) - These are in place of my optical drives.
4x 2TB WD Black Hard drives for storage.
Two Samsung P2350 Monitors connected via DVI. (One using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter).

In Windows I am using the latest (12.4) Catalyst Software Suite, 64 bit of course, downloaded directly from AMD's site after installing the drivers from Boot Camp.
As for installing Windows I used an original (not burned) installation media (Disk is in a pristine condition). And yes, Windows is fine, the problem just seems to be getting the system to boot up Windows with that second monitor. However if the "problem monitor" is disconnected the system boots fine 100% of the time and connecting it later after booting the system will still operate properly.
For the sake of arguement I swapped monitor cables and connected the "second" monitor to the mini displayport adapter to verify that it wasn't a cabling issue and I'm still yielding the same issues.
As for GPU testing, I've played games (Crysis, Grand Theft Auto IV, Battlefield 3, etc.) and I've had no issues with the card or stability.
You would think that Apple would try to find a fix for this, especially considering the caliber of this machine.

  • Help! My Mac Pro will not boot up

I knew I shouldn't try to use the Boot Camp on my MP, but I thought it would work.
I have three HD in my MP and followed the instructions for the installtion of WIN XP on Mac drive 3, but when I was faced with the formatting choices in the Win setup I got confused with all the drive letters (I have two CD drives and three HDs), and must have formatted my Mac OS drive and partially drive 3.
My Mac Pro will no longer boot to the Mac OSX, even with the "option" key held down. All I get is a black screen that says: "NTLDR is maissing. (press CRTL-ALT-DEL to reboot).
Is there any hope of a recovery?
    Thanks,
    Tony

Wow...this is good to know! After many years with PCs I "assumed" that it would name the 1st drive "C" and then each one after that in order.
My problem was that I have three identical drives, all 250 GBs, so it was confusing, but that is exactly what the instructions said. So, with your encouragement and a little bit of faith, I will try this one more time. At least I learned how to recover after deleting my boot drive.
    Thanks so much...
    Tony
    Tony,
If I remember right from my boot camp / xp
installation, boot camp aliases the drives, and when
it tells you to format C: for windows, that's the one
    to select from the screen.
I panicked when I saw that, but then I realized that
the C: drive shown on the installation screen was
actually my secondary drive (and that boot camp had
shuffled the drive letters around). If you notice,
C: is actually not the top of the list, and in my
case I had two different drive sizes and so I could
reason that C: matched my secondary drive's size.
In short, pick C: for installation, as the program
    says...
I thought for sure it nuked my OSX installation at
first, when it didn't seem that I could boot back to
OSX, but in the Control Panel of Windows (or in your
System Properties on OSX) you'll see an icon called
"Startup Disk" which will also allow you to pick OSX
    or Windows and then restart.

    Hi all:
I've got a 1 YO Quad, 2.93 Nehelam that wont sleep on set schedule. It has been doing this sense last week. I get the P-RAM, unplugged everything (even power), re-plugged everything, repaired my drive with disc utility, erased start up items, everything.
It WILL sleep on Q but not on a schedule in energy saver prefs. The only thing thats different lately is that Installed CS5 Master suite and Apple's latest audio update (which fixed my audio by the way...)
    Any idea's.
    Thanks---Seattle

Is this question in the correct discussion? I thought this was the discussion for Mac Pro (previous to 2009). This could be a problem that appeared in the 2009 Mac Pro line ... or it could be related to the OS you are running.
