My Mac Pro won't turn on...

This has happened 3-4 times...my computer will be on; I insert a thumb drive and the screen goes black, the fan goes bonkers and the only way to get it to stop is to turn off the computer manually. Each time, the computer would restart except for this last time. The machine won't turn on.
I've got a genius bar reservation for later today but does anyone have any idea what's going on? I'll bet it has nothing to do with the thumb drive but that seems to be the constant. Although, the first time it happened, I'm not sure if I used the thumb drive.

It would also help for us to know the exact size and year of your MBP.

  • Start Up hangs - My Mac Pro won't turn on

After upgrading, my Mac Pro won't start up.  Does any one else have this problem...   I can't get my Mac to start up...  HELP!

More information on what the 'upgrade' was and which MacPro would be helpful.  With that said -
If it worked before the upgrade and does not work now, the first thing I would do is think about what changes were made.  If hardware, is/are the component(s) installed the proper ones, designed for Macs and for you Mac?  If satisfied with the components being the right ones, I would look at the installation process.  Is everything seated properly and in the correct location?  Are any power cables connected?  Were ESD protocols followed?  Next I would run the Hardware Test included on the Installation Disk.  Reporting those results here may help.  (Note: this may not find a video card problem).

  • 2008 Mac pro won't turn on at all

I have a 2008 MacBook pro and I turned it off and then later I turned it back on and it sounds like it is loading but the screen is still black and there is no start up noise

  • My Mac Pro won't turn on, what should I do?

In the morning I used my MacBook's hard drive with an USB-SATA cabel as the "booting" hard drive. When I turned on the Mac Pro I pressed alt to choose my MacBook's hard drive as the primary driver. Everything went right.
I wanted to copy my files to my server, it was almost done when suddenly the electricity went out... I disconnected the MacBook's hard drive and I wanted to turn on the MacPro but only the grey screen comes up with the apple logo and the spining circle.
    What should I do?

First try booting from your installer CD.  If successful run Disk Utility to try to fix both the external drive and the internal macpro drive. Hopefully that will fix it.

  • Mac Pro won't turn on

I cannot turn on my Mac Pro anymore. It was in sleep mode - monitors only, not HD - and didn't wake up when I pressed a key on the keyboard. So I pushed the power button until the LED went out and then pushed it again to turn on the machine.
The LEDs on the memory banks lit up for a fraction of a second, much shorter than they normally do. A brief whistle sound came on. The UPS display indicated a power draw of 9 Watts, then 8,7,6 and so on until it hit 0. Pressing the power button again didn't do anything. When I removed the power cord and reconnected it again, pressing the power button resulted in the same as above.
This seems to point to the power supply, doesn't it?

    Are you saying
    You drained your UPS
You leave the side panel off when running or booting
    Hope the UPS is 1200-1500VA
A Mac Pro with power cable disconnected (and any others probably) and press power on button for 10 seconds resets the SMC. But should be used only limited fashion.

  • Help! My Mac Pro won't turn on!

    Hi,
I've looked around on some forums but haven't been able to solve my problem.
Basically, whenever my Mac Pro is plugged in, it will try to start and fail and power off almost immediately. Then, after a few seconds, it will try and fail again and so on.
For a short while, it was only attempting to turn in when I pressed the power button and would fail a few times before eventually turning on but now it's started doing the above.
Does anyone know what this could be?
    I tried resetting the SMC
I've read posts about looking for trickle lights etc but I'm not sure what they mean.
    Thanks,
    Chris.
P.S. My Mac Pro is from 2006. It's running Tiger 10.4.11 (upgraded from 10.4.7) on 1 hard drive and Snow Leopard on.
If you need any more info, please let me know.

The AC power cords used on some Mac Pro are a unique design that surrounds the active part of the computer-end of the cord with a large block of rubbery material. This makes it very easy to think you have inserted the power cord completely, but actually have just barely made contact.
Before you spend a lot of money on this problem, remove the computer-end of the power cord, examine it for signs of arcing (unlikely) and then press it into the computer socket as hard as you can. It is well supported, and you cannot hurt it. That will eliminate the power cord as a possible source of the problem.

My Mac book pro won't turn on at all and when i put it to charge the light blinks, what should I do?

Yes if your model MBP has a removable battery.  If it does not:
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Mac book pro won't turn on and battery is fully charged..

My Mac book won't turn on... The battery is fully charged, we have it hooked up to power... We've tried holding power button down and disconnecting from power but nothin have worked! It makes a noise like its going to turn on and little white light flashes but nothing happens

Try a safe boot, see if it starts, this takes a bit longer.  Push power button while holding shift key, continue to hold key till you see the progress bar. If it boots, shut down and try to boot in the normal way.  Best

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If this doesn't work then you will need to erase the drive and install Snow Leopard from scratch:
    Erase and Install Snow Leopard
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. When completed quit DU and complete the Snow Leopard installation.
