My Mac REALLY hates RTFs: any app (including Finder) hangs
This problem is affecting my work Mac, a mirror-drive-door 1.25 GHz G4 with 768 MB of RAM, running OS X 10.3.9.
A couple of days ago, it became deathly afraid of RTF files... or so it would seem, since any time an RTF is anywhere in sight, the application that's trying to access it, including the Finder, will hang.
Some recent examples:
Entourage: Trying to read an email from a coworker that contains an RTF attachment, just reading the MESSAGE, not opening the attachment, hangs Entourage.
Finder: Hangs just getting a directory listing if there's an RTF in the directory. If there's an RTF on the Desktop, Finder just hangs, period.
TextEdit: I was writing a document, and when I came to save it, as soon as it was saved (as an RTF of course), TextEdit hung.
Downloading a new utility, opening the DMG file, which contained an RTF, again hung the Finder.
I've tried deleting any com.apple.* preferences that were modified in the last week and rebooting, no luck. The only way I can get around this problem is to go into the directory via command line in Terminal and delete the RTF file. (OK, that's ONE thing that doesn't seem to be affected by RTFs, but that's it.)
It's not any one particular RTF file; as the examples demonstrate, ANY RTF, including one I've just created, will do it.
I'm no novice with the Mac; I've been using Macs exclusively for 14 years, and I work as a web developer. In other words, I'm a "power user" who's spent 8+ hours in front of a Mac almost every day for a decade and I know the system extremely well. I've never seen anything even remotely like this.
OK, here's an update: I just created a new user account on this computer and with that account I am able to load RTFs OK. So it does seem to be some kind of preferences issue, or at least something specific to my main user account. I'm still stuck on exactly what it could be, though.

Hi, I am trying to launch illustrator after downloading it onto a Mac. I go to apps in finder and click on Adobe Illustrator but there are no files - such as configuration etc. What should I do?
Thanks for responding, I downloaded the Creative Cloud Installer which is sitting under Devices in my Finder and then installed the Ai app which is appearing under Applications in the finder. I notice that in the launch tutorial there is the Adobe Creative Cloud sitting in the Apps folder above Ai - I don't have this. Hmm what to do?

Is this a bug in the OS? Is this a common issue and is Apple going to update their OS to fix this? I have tried restarting the phone and deleting the last app downloaded just in case but still automatically going to homescreen with any app. It seems to be an OS issue but not sure. This is the first time I have ever had an issue. Very annoyed considering I just got this phone in late March.
It's not necessarily an iOS issue and Apple is unlikely to release an update to "fix" this minor annoyance.
A simple search of the forums would have revealed multiple threads with similar issues.
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).
Many users have reported getting around this issue by installing any new app (free or paid). -
MacBook Pro Retina 13" crash quitting all apps including Finder
Hello everyone,
Below is the crash log I am getting with what seems to be a display issue on my MBP 13" retina (late 2012).
I first noticed the problem when emails failed to display in the Apple Mail message preview pane (below the message list, as seen in Classic Layout mode). Opening these non-previewing messages, some of them would still fail to display. Double-clicking the empty display area routinely prompts a crash which forces all open applications to relaunch, including finder, preceded by the Macromedia style twirly that one usually sees on shut-down.
Any help would be much appreciated!

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
Folllowing an upgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) Finder frequently hangs, causing any open apps and the iMac to hang. This will occur whether or not any 3rd party apps or Safari are open. About 50% of the time trying to empty the trash will cause a finder hang. There are no error messages to let me know what code such a hang may be. Repeated attempts to force quit the iMac always fail, so I have to hard crash using the power button. Multiple attempts are required to successfully restart via the login screen. I do not know whether any other apps, such as Safari or screen saver may be involved. I think a crash log would help, however I am not sure whether I should look in: useres/library/logs/DaiagnosticReports or : users/library/logs/CrashReporter, and whether I should attempt to open the latest in either in Console or Text edit and then post here. Also, is this the appropriate site to post a log in the hope that Apple may look at it? I have read through threads on Apple finder, and am stunned to find that after all these OS-X versions finder is still buggy and inferior to MS Explorer and Apple appears to be in denial. Maybe their efforts are in devices such as iPhones and iPads? Ths issue never occured in OS 10.5.8.

I turned on my MacBook pro today and whenever I click on anything, I get a rainbow wheel. And whenever I click on apps they just bounce and won't open. And sometimes it will just rainbow wheel on login and won't let me in. Basically it's impossible to use. I'm not sure what to do.
It's very likely that your boot drive is failing, or that you have some other hardware fault. If you like, you can try to erase and recreate the boot volume, but I don't know whether it will do any good.
Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with a cloning tool such as Disk Utility. Preferably both. You must be certain that you can restore everything to the state it's in now.
Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you import the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:
Using Setup Assistant
Don't import the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password. -
Itunes wont quit on mac and cannot browse any apps or window
Hi,. I was just listening to my songs,. Then suddenly when I'm trying to exit my itunes, it won't quit. Everytime I try to restart my computer, my itunes keeps coming back, and I cannot use any of my applications, click any icons or open any windows on my mac, Help, I dont know what to do,
OS X Lion and Mountain Lion automatically opens the apps that were opened the next time you start up your Mac. First, press Alt, Command and Esc keys, choose iTunes and force close it.
If this doesn't work, turn off your Mac and turn it on while holding down the Shift key. By doing this, it will start up in safe mode. Then, log in, open System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items, and make sure iTunes is not in the list. If it is, delete it. Finally, restart the computer -
Hi All,
I have a macbook pro with snow leopard on it. The tab key is not working now suddenly. It doesn't work on any browser or applications like word or excel. The key combos with Tab also doesn't work.
Thanks,
Daniel.I noticed the same problem started a few days ago on mac pro with logic fcp keyboard but caps lock also stopped working. I cleaned under and around the tab and caps lock keys thoroughly but no dice. If I change usb ports the keyboard is plugged into caps lock lights up briefly and if I tweak keyboard setting tabs to force it to re-recognise the keyboard the tab and caps lock functions work while I have the keyboard system panel open and attempting to "identify keyboard" but back to not functioning when I close it. There have been a few postings about this problem but haven't come across the solution yet. Any ideas...

Mac Pro runs very slow, any apps, accessing finder spinning ball
For the past 3-4 months my Mac Pro is slowing down to about 2 to 3 times slower
This is across the board no mater if it is an application or opening a finder window
I made a new volume and a new install , no 3rd party apps just what was on the disk
and updated to 10.5.8
Same thing so i don't think it is software related
I have noticed that my cpu memory maxis out very quickly im not using more than 1 or 2 apps and page outs are 2 to 3 times the page ins,
last night i can't use the mouse like i used to i have to almost hit the buttons
to do anything, it's as if is pressure sensitive
If you like i can send you jpgs of the activity Monitor but i don't know what you want from the Activity Monitor
I'm worried that it night be a memory problem i have run almost all diagnostic programs all report no problems
I have a Mac Pro 2.66 dual-core
with 2 GB memory
running 10.5.8
I know that you might ask for more specific info, just tell me what to do
I need to find out what's going on before something with the hardware causes expensive repair and data loss
Please i need help
Thank anybody
Steve knoxHi Steve,
My first suggestion is to run the Apple Hardware Test DVD, My next would be to download TechTool Deluxe and see what it says.
The AHT DVD is run the same way as the System Install DVD, just restart holding the C-key with the AHT DVD inserted.
And here is a link to TechTool Deluxe:
https://support.apple.com/techtooldeluxe/main?id=dl
Hope this helps you out.
Kind regards,

Where am I going wrong?
Reset all settings; settings > general > reset > reset all settings. After you have done that reconnect to WIFI and then try again

Why won't my iPad screen rotate?
Change the position of the side swithc up and down and see if the screen rotates.
If that doesnt work, "double" click on the home button and swipe to the end then tap on the end icon and see if that works -
Well, I guess I wrote everything in the question.
But to repeat myself, when I first got Mountain Lion I was so sooth to see that when I was switching to finder from any other application (using the cmd+tabs buttons) I could see instantly my desktop meaning: the screen without any other windows, the desktop!! With the wall picture and the few folders lingering there.
But for some reason, it doesn't do it anymore...
Was it only an short appercu... only to make me hope that they finally... humm... some frustration with the ...
Anyhow I would appreciate any help.

Try Safe Boot, then see, and boot into ML Recovery too and check your system drive. -
I start up, that takes like 15 minutes. Desktop photo appears. Dock, Finder, and menu bar appear briefly before disappearing. Cannot open any programs, because clicking on anything is impossible. So... am I screwed? I did not back up for a few weeks. I don't want to lose all my work. Really distraught, really poor (can't afford another laptop), really confused.
Shut down your machine.
Turn on machine
hold command s until you get a black screen
type:
fsck -yf
if you see any:
disk0s2 I/O Error
Your hard drive is failing.
if that fixes some stuff, make sure you type
mount -uw /

Can't Open Any Apps: "architecture not supported"
I'm using Snow Leopard on my Intel MBP, but keep handy a clone from a couple years ago on an external hard drive....in case I need to boot from another drive for diagnosis/repair.
The clone on the external is from OS 10.5.7. And whenever I try to launch any apps (including native Mac ones like Safari....which are the versions that were on disk when I cloned) on that drive, I get "can't open; architecture not supported".
I've tried adjusting an app's permissions to let me read/write/own, renaming, and copying the apps.....but they won't open.
Any ideas?
I'll note that I'm trying to launch apps that were cloned at the time I was running OS 10.5.7. I'm not trying to launch apps from my internal drive.Unless you cloned a working Snow Leopard installation, which unless I'm misunderstanding you did not - you said you cloned 10.5 - then again you probably do not have the Rosetta environment installed. It won't matter that you have 10.5 on the external disk and that the applications are on that drive unless you boot from that drive. Nor will it matter that you cloned a 10.5 drive to your internal when you then upgrade to 10.6; the Rosetta environment does not carry over from 10.5 automatically when you upgrade to 10.6.
Again, try installing Rosetta per the instructions to which I linked.
