My mac safari looks different and had pop ups? Virus like...

I have a Mac Air 13".
I just updated my mac a few days ago. (I'm no sure where to find my latest update at either?)
When I bring up my safari the page of my top sites doesn't come up. And my preferred search is google....but it comes up as some white screen with some other name in the url and pretends as if it is google...then while moving through other sites I get all the pop up ads and "keep your mac clean", so and so sites. I need some help quickly before I leave for school!

Download this adware removal tool from this link: http://www.thesafemac.com/art/
It should take care of the ads
Then search "how to make google your default search engine" on safari, It will show you the steps.  They're easy to follow.

Try each of these in order until one works:
Open App Store and click on your Purchases tab. If you're prompted to accept them, then do so.
Put the old ones into the Trash, temporarily. Open App Store and see if you can download them for free from their individual product pages. If asked to buy them, see the next option.
Click here, contact Apple, and wait for a response.
You will have to purchase them using your Apple ID.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Mackeeper and other pop ups

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could tell me if my Macbook Pro has a possible virus? I really don't think anything is wrong, as everything seems to be working fine, knock on wood.... However, I noticed I when using Safari, I have had pop ups for Mackeeper, to clean my Mac, and just now I got a new tab opened automatically for Mackeeper and when I went to leave the page, a pop up appeared that said Let Mackeeper clean your Mac, If you don't want to use Mackeeper, leave this page.  It might not have been word for word, but it was to that effect, i exited out of that page! I saw a similar post on here from November, and Linc Davis gave steps to check for an extension that could be a problem. I followed those steps, but didn't find any extensions at all... So, did I look right and do I have anything to worry about? I really am not worried and know what to look for, but just want some opinions of my peers....

If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, AdwareMedic, or Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • Lagging, freezing and video pop ups

I have recently notice a lot of lagging to my laptop, a lot of freezing where it says "not responding" then will finally load the page, and video pop ups that I am unable to find the location they are coming from. I have ran several virus programs and I am still having the issue.

    I experienced the same thing.
(freezing website, not the video pop-up)
Try an adblocker to get rid of those pop ups...
In PaleMoon(a FF derivative) I didn't have stalled websites so far.

I switched initially to get back the old, non Australis UI but it seems many websites are much more responsive than in FF.

  • I was doing some stuff with torrents and now pop ups are everywhere. I deleted everything I downloaded that had to deal with them but the pop ups are still occurring. Does anyone know what to do? I do have AppleCare and was wondering if they could help.

I was downloading some stuff off of piratebay and I downloaded utorrent. I went back on my MacBook Pro later and found a bunch of pop ups on safari and a completely different safari format. I reset safari cleared everything deleted the stuff I downloaded and they are still occurring. I was wondering if it is an easy fix and /or AppleCare might be able to help me. Do I have a virus?

I would agree with kevin_, it sounds like you have downloaded some adware.
Torrents and piracy sites are extremely dangerous, and you should stop downloading from such places immediately! They have become very common sources for adware and malware on the Mac... really, the only common source, to be honest. You practically can't swing a stick in such places without hitting something malicious.
Stop downloading stolen content, provided by untrustworthy criminals, or you'll have this problem repeat itself. Next time it might be worse than simple adware.

  • Why does my Mac Mini look different on different displays

I have 3 HDTVs, 2 Samsung 40" LCD 1080p and a 50" Insignia Plasma 1080p. I have my 2009 Mac mini connected to my Samsung LN40a530 the picture quality is amazing, pictures are beautiful, text is extremely clear and colors look real and vivid. But as soon as I try connecting my Mac mini to my other television sets, the overall picture quality is very noticeably poor in comparison to the Samsung LN40a530. At first I had just the Samsung LN40a530 and the Insignia plamsa. I had figured the issue was the fact that one is LCD and one is plasma but I recently purchaced a Samsung LN40c550 LCD 1080p LCD and the same problem persisted. The colors are off for instance people look dark and orange, the text is blochy, the overall picture is just not very good. I have tried several times to adjust the settings on the Mac and the televisions with no luck. I find this very strange since both Samsung televisions are essentially the same tv. It's understandable with one being plasma and one being LCD but when the LCD and the plasma are having essentially the same issue it's very confusing. If anyone has had the same issue when switching monitors or televisions with a Mac mini any help would he great. Thanks

There is really only one setting on the Mac that can have such a dramatic affect. That would be the gamma setting. You get to the gamma setting when running through a color calibration on the Mac. You can check and see if gamma is the same when connected with the different TVs. Mac's typically default to 2.2 for computer displays but a setting of 1.8 is often needed for TVs, so that's worth looking into.
Outside of that setting, your attention should shift to the TVs. On you two Samsungs, do they have very similar menu arrangements? If so, try sitting down with a pencil and paper and write down all the settings for the good Samsung and then apply them to the bad one. I would think that would bring them very close into alignment for image quality.
Are all the TVs in question being hooked up the same way using the same cable and adapter? You didn't really say anything about how they are hooked up.

  • Mac book pro running slow and getting pop ups

mac book pro running slow and getting pop ups

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.
