My Mac suddenly has white screen and lines through it

My sons Macbook Air has a white screen this morning when he turned it on with colored lines through it.  What does this mean?  Why did it happen? How can we get it fixed?  Please someone help!

Hey bwzdragon,
If your iPad will not start up completely, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
Specifically -
If your device gets stuck during startup
When starting up, you might see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen for a long time, or your device might restart again. Try these steps:
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Happy computing,
Brett L

The 3 beeps during start-up are telling you that the RAM is bad.
If you can access the RAM modules, you may try taking them out and putting them back in, perhaps it's only bad contacts.
If that doesn't help, you'll need new RAM module(s).

  • My MacBook Pro 13 won't start has white screen and beeps

I used my MacBook pro lastnight and worked fine. Tried to turn it on this morning and it won't start. Does sound like it is going to then before login screen shows ur goes to a solid white screen and beeps every 7 seconds. Need help school is about to start again.

    Check this out.
I think you have bad RAM, so either you've recently put in new RAM, knocked some RAM loose from the socket (really hard to do), or the RAM went bad (maybe).
You might need to see a real tech.
Upon further review, I think your MBP has a serious problem.  You need to take it to an Apple Store for repair.  If you bought it within the last 12 months, you will be able to get warranty service, as long as you're not at fault.

  • Help! 3G works then has white screen green lines

This all started after i squeezed the top portion of the phone a bit too hard. I didn't think it was so serious since the phone booted up fine and worked for fine for that day and then maybe in the evening or the next day it was going through kernel panics and reboots after a little while while using it.. (like making a call).
Then it got worse by freezing in the OS if not booting itself up again. I would see a white full blank white screen and then later green vertical lines on the right of the whole screen.
But IF you say it is the LCD, how is it that it CAN boot up (maybe after some check disks attempts and an extra reboot) and the LCD works well. I even managed to retrieve my addresses book from the file system and back up my recordings and some music. HOWEVER then after a short few minutes it begins to lose connection to the PC and shows that familiar white screen.
I am prompted to do a restore in itunes, and i did attempt to do a restore to its current 3.1.3 iOS in both recovery mode and DFU but itunes tells me error 21. And the itunes diagnoses says it cant detect an device.
That about covers the behavior of this phone.. any one know what could be wrong??
Can a bad battery cause all these possibly? I have one i ordered to put into it prior to all this.

  • 20" Imac has white screen and freezes at start-up

my 20" imac will not start....help...All I get is a white screen and tone at start-up then it stays white. I tried hooking up a bootable firewire drive and pressing the alt/option key at start up nothing. I also tried the command/option/p/r at start up, it will reboot to the same screen. I also tried running the hardware diagnostics at start-up...no response. Computer was purchased on Nov .4 2007, warrenty just expired.
    Help......Please....

I had the exact same problem today. My iMac 20" (iMac 8,1) would't boot any more, staying stuck on a white screen immediately after the normal start-up chime. Nothing worked (no safe mode, no DVD boot, no disk selection icon when starting with alt pressed, no Apple hardware test, no parameter RAM reset, power management chip reset had no effect, no verbose mode, not even open firmware).
I browsed the forums, but what I found didn't help, so I was about to stop trying and have it fixed by Apple. But my son told me he had noticed that after "a long time" (he's 4...), a folder with a flashing ? would appear. I figured that wouldn't happen in case of a severe hardware failure, so I tried one last thing: I hooked up an old PowerBook in target disk mode via Firewire and restarted the iMac. I tried several times (with and without alt pressed), but nothing happened (when pressing alt, a functional mouse pointer would appear, though).
Then I restarted a last time and left the iMac sit there on its white screen for about 20 minutes... and that's when the miracle happened: it finally booted off the target-disk mode PowerBook's system!
I ran Disk Utility, which saw the iMac internal HD as disk2s0 (or something like that), and launched the disk repair process. After about three error-ridden verify-repair cycles, the green ok message finally appeared and the volume mounted as if nothing had happened. I rebooted off the internal disk without a glitch, and I still have to find damaged or lost files.
I guess I was lucky that my HD problem was benign enough to be cured by Disk Utility. But even if that had not been the case, at least I'd have known that the HD failed, and maybe I could have saved some files using recovery software. Whatever the case, if you've got an external bootable drive, it's definitely worth trying before handing your iMac over for (usually horribly expensive) repairs.
    Good luck!

  • 6th gen ipod nano has white screen and won't go into disc mode

My ipod nano has a white screen - it will play music, and it is recognized by itunes. It won't enter disc mode. I can't seem to find any other helpful steps to follow online other than put it into disc mode and restore it via itunes. When I attempt to put it into disc mode holding power/Vol down together the screen will turn back, but when I then hold down Vol down/Vol up together while the screen is dark it just goes back to white screen. I did plug it into the computer and restore it via itunes, and the screen is still white.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

    Hi LizS5,
It sounds as if you have already done much of the troubleshooting suggested in this article, but I would suggest you work through it in order to get your iPod nano back up and running -
iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3474
    Specifically -
Try putting the iPod into disk mode:
Reset the device (press the Sleep and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the display turns black—about eight seconds).
When the display turns black, hold down the Volume Down and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until the device enters Disk mode.
While the device is in disk mode, sync it to iTunes and try to restore.
And if the issue is not resolved -
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?

  • 5th Gen iPOD has white screen and beeps when center and menu button is held

My ipod was perfectly fine until I downloaded iPod Updater 2006-01-10...now, my ipod has a white screen, won't turn off (white screen stays on) and when I hold the center and menu button down, it does a 3 syllable beep. I've done the switching the hold button back and forth; resetting my ipod; restarting my PC; un-installing and re-installing both the itunes software and the ipod updater and still no working ipod. I am atleast trying to restore it to factory settings, but, I get an error message on the iPod updater screen. Can anyone help? Thanks!

everybody listen to babara hall, genius, it takes a while but reset it one more time using menu and selct and while its off for a few seconds push selct and play/pause, hold it for a long while, then let go and you'll see the apple logo and everything will go back to the way it was before.
p.s. thank you so much, ipods working great now, glad someone knows what there doing instead of apple, lol

  • Ipod  touch has white screen and not responding

screen is white and not responding

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.
