My Mac won't install mpkg and pkg files.

My Mac won't install mpkg and pkg files.  Whenever I double-click an pkg or mpkg file, I get the dialog box to "choose an application" to open it.   After some searching, I discovered I do not have the installer.app.  I tried to Repair Disk from my Snow Leopard DVD but every time it boots from the DVD, my computer crashes.  Any suggestions?

You have the installer app.  It is located in /System/Library/CoreServices.
Use the finder's Go menu, Go to Folder... and type /System/Library/CoreServices to open the CoreServices folder.   You should see it in there. If you do not see it there then that would beg the question what else might be missing and perphas you need to do an update (re)install (or restore form a hopefully good backup).
To try to reassoicatate .[m]pkl's with the Installer, take one of your .[m]pkg's and do a finder Get Info on it and set the Open with... to the Installer app.  If the Installer app is not shown use Other... at the bottom of the list to navigate to the CoreServices folder and select Installer.  Then click the Change All... button.
I am not sure why your [.m]pkgs would have lost their Launch Services association with Installer in the first place (unless it really is missing).

  • How can i re-link .mpkg and .pkg files to hidden Installer?

I am near the end of the process of setting up my new Mac Pro (early 2009) eight core. Quite the wonderful difference from my "Mirror Drive Door" dual 1.25 GHz machine!
The Mac Pro came with Mac OS X 10.6.2 installed. I updated this to 10.6.6 via Software Update along with a slew of other updates presented there. I downloaded and installed a bunch of software. Finally, I was ready to install iLife 11 from the "CPU Drop-in" DVD that was on top of the box when the computer was originally unpacked.
Unfortunately, it wouldn't even begin the install. The "iLife.mpkg" file, when double-clicked, returned the error message "no application associated with this document". Hours of investigation reveals that NO .mpkg or .pkg file will open; doing a "get info" on the files reveals that those files have lost their link to the Installer app.
AND since the only installer I can find is hidden in /usr/sbin, there is no way I can re-link .mpkg and .pkg files to it via "get info".
I downloaded Pacifist and used it to open the "Mac OS X 10.6.6 Combo" package and re-installed the Combo updater. Much to my surprise, that didn't fix the linking issue.
I've logged in as root, but still can't re-link the package files to the Installer as /usr/ is still hidden. Is there a way I can temporarily "un-hide" the /usr directory so that "get info; open with" can see it?
I've started from the Mac OS X installer DVD and repaired permissions on the hard disk and "repaired" the hard disk. No luck there either.
I did a clean install of Mac OS X 10.6.2 to a different hard drive and applied the combo updater and the packages worked as expected there. So some software I installed or by running a slew of updaters via Software Update broke the link between packages and the Installer.
I'm sure that re-linking to packages to the hidden installer app can be done via Terminal and possible other ways, but I don't know how to do it.
Short of doing a complete Mac OS X 10.6 re-installation and update and having to re-do several days of other software installations and data transfers, I'm hoping someone will offer some solutions or tips on how to solve my problem.
How do I re-link .mpkg and .pkg files to the Installer?

Thanks for the reply. I know I had previously checked for the missing installer in /System/Library/CoreServices/ and I rechecked and it's still not there. But your tip spurred me to check the test 10.6.6 installation on the other hard disk and yes! It's there!
A quick copy from the second hard disk to my current hard disk and doing the "get info" trick and everything now works wonderfully. Only one day lost to trying to figure this out. Now that the problem is fixed, quite the relief.

  • Installing .mkpg and .pkg files

I have downloaded .mkpg files as well as .pkg files recently, but when I try to open them I get a message that I don't have an application to open it. I have never had a problem with this before. Now, instead of the icon I always saw before, these are showing up with the appearance of general folders. Any ideas?

  • Where can I download .mpkg and .pkg's so I can open them

I'm having trouble. Something weird happened with my mac just couple minutes ago. Now I can't even open my .mpkg's and pkg's. Can someone please tell me what is seriously going on here?

    Hi Jin Yi,
I have no idea what you mean with .mpkg and .pkgs. These are packages meant to install software. Why do you want to open them?
Concerning your startup problems try to insert the Tiger install DVD and restart with the c-key held down. Once the installer has started, select your language and then select disk utility from the MENU. Single-click your hard disk in the left sidebar and repair the disk and permissions. Once they check out without errors quit disk utility aand restart.

Have you just tried repairing with Disk Utility?
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Fresh Leopard install gone Wrong - PKG Files Associated with Safari

I just purchased a used Macbook Core 2 Duo 2.0ghz that came with Tiger installed. I upgraded to Leopard by zeroing the hard drive and reinstalling Leopard and all updates.
The problem I am running into is that for some reason, and PKG files downloaded to install programs (i.e. Skype) will not install because the PKG file is associated with Safari. I check on my Mac Pro, and it has PKG files associated with "Installer". I tried to find "Installer" as a program on the Macbook but had no luck. Any ideas? With this being a fresh install I have NO idea how this happened. Any help is most appreciated. Thanks.

Hmm, I tried to associate a file with the Installer, but wasn't able to get the system to tell me where it is. There is a command line version of the installer in /usr/sbin/, and that may be what the system uses under the hood, but I couldn't find a way to get to that either (I was trying to do this in the Get Info pane, under Open With).
I don't know why pkg is associated with Safari. It could be that your launch services database got hosed somehow during your upgrade. If you're willing try something, it might be that rebuilding your launch services database will help. From the command line, run this command:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
(the above should all be on one line). This will reset, then rebuild the database. Although I don't think it's strictly necessary, restarting your machine after this command has run successfully would probably be a good idea.

  • Virtualbox - install build and header files for your current kernel

I have initially installed virtualbox before upgrading the Arch
Also took backup of the kernle before upgrading since kernel26 2.6.30 is having problem with virtualbox
After upgrading I have configure the grub to use the previous kernel i.e 2.6.28
Later  installed xorg and want to install the video drivers from VBox additions
    but running
    sh VBoxLinuxAdditions_x86.run
    i get the following
install build and header files for your current kernel
The current kernel version is 2.6.28 Arch
What are the build and header files I have to install or search with pacman
And since i have upgraded the system will I able to look up the header and build files needed for kernel 2.6.28

dmartins - he's talking about his kernel's headers, not the kernel-headers package - they are two very differnet things.
sant527 - when you backed up the 2.6.28 kernel, did you remember the files in /usr/src/linux-2.6.28-ARCH/ ? They're what VBox is looking for.

  • Problems with *.mpkg and *.pkg

    Hi everyone,
I'm really new to Mac, and I've been having a problem which is probably easy to fix:
I've got a program in an *mpkg format, and when I double-click it says that no program has been chosen for opening it. I looked it up and I need Apple Installer to open it, but I have no idea where to find it. I have the same problem with *.pkg files. Any suggestions? Thanks
    iMac4,1   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Look in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder for a copy of the Installer application; if you don't find it, use Pacifist to extract the Installer from your Tiger installation disks. If you have a previous version of Mac OS X 10.4 on those disks, run the Mac OS X 10.46 combo updater afterwards.

  • My mac won't install anything

I have Mac OS 10.6.5 and I have had several issues that I'll summarize briefly:
    - Could not download updates using software update.
    - When I managed to download the updates (from the website, manually) my mac was not able to install them.
    - It takes ages to start up, and 1/3 times finder does not respond, 1/3 times network won't work.
    - I cannot install anything, I tried reinstalling the mac OS 10.6.3 from the dvd received with the mac but did not work. Received an error message (probably because either the dvd drive or the mac hard drive do not work properly).
    - I cannot decompress downloaded folders.
    - I have tried the hardware problem scanning by pressing "d" (or whatever key was) at mac start up with the application dvd inserted, but got no hardware error messages.
    - Finally, I have a boot hard drive with windows 7 installed (that works perfectly fine), could that be a problem?

It's possible your hard disk is failing or is too full. Mac's need 10-15% of the total HD available. The easiest way to tallow much available space you have s to click your Hard Disk in a Finder wind then click Command - I. This will provide some basic information such as the capacity of the drive and how much is available.
If you have plenty of available space then open Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility) highlight the HD on the left pane then click the First Aid tab. Look at the bottom right and see what the S.M.A.R.T. status is. It should be Verified, anything else and it's in trouble!
Also you can run Apple Hardware Test in extended mode, if you get back errors then report what they are and we will try to help you interpret them.

  • My Mac won't install Snow Leopard?

    Hello!
I own a 13" MacBook Pro, which I bought in 2010 (I think it's the mid/late 2009 model). It came with Snow Leopard.
When Lion OS X was launched, I downloaded it, and have been using it since then. To be honest, I've not liked it at all because it's a lot slower, and I don't really like all of this resumé business. I've only kept it because with University, i've not had much time to downgrade back to Snow Leopard.
But basically, I've got the time this week, and tried to install Snow Leopard yesterday - I tried this by inserting my original disks which came with my MacBook Pro, restarting the Mac, then pressing Option (Alt) to bring up the start-up disk stuff, and wiping the hardrive.
Yet, after wiping the hardrive, after asking it to start the Snow Leopard disc as the start-up disk, it wouldn't. The Apple logo loaded, the little loading wheel thing underneath it did, and it just stayed like that for ages - you could hear the disk spinning, then after about 5-10 minutes, the screen went black and I had to turn the laptop off.
It kept doing this so because I wiped the hardrive, my only option was to go to the Recovery disk and re-install Lion.
I'm thinking there could be a problem with the disc drive, but it works fine if i'm burning CDs/DVDs, or install software and that. So what is it that's wrong? Am I doing something that's wrong?
There's nothing wrong with the MacBook Pro discs because when I put them in the laptop when I've got Lion, it loads and asks if I wish to install Snow Leopard - of course though, it won't let me.
    Cheers.

  • PSE8 Mac Won't Install

After starting the setup process on the install DVD and entering the serial number the installer says "preparing to install" and then nothing happens. This is on my new iMac 21.5" LED Screen Late 2009 running Snow leopard OS X 10.6.2
I also tried installation on my 2007 Macbook and had the same problem: click the install button which briefly dims then turns white again and nothing happens.
I tried copying the Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 folder off the CD and onto my iMac as suggested by a reviewer on the Amazon PSE8 Mac page who had the same problem and trying to install from that didn't work either. Note: I made sure Safari wasn't running which caused an error message when re-installing my old PSE6 on my iMac.
Could this be a defective PSE8 DVD? I posted this problem in the Adobe Customer Support Portal on 11/19/2009 and have had no response.
I was really looking forward to becoming acquainted with PSE8's new features over the Thanksgiving holiday and am very disappointed with this turn of events!

If you're saying that simple upgrading and/or using Migration Assistant causes the problem, then you will no doubt be hearing from many users. The only users who would not do that are those who buy a new Mac since 10.6 came out, and who never have had a Mac before. And they will have potential problems in the future, since upgrading and using Migration Assistant is standard procedure.
Yes, I upgraded to 10.6 from 10.5. As I have upgraded to each OS version since 10.1. I do use Time Machine, but I have never restored a backup. I have never had any problems due to upgrading before this one.
I did use Migration Assistant when I replaced a first-gen MacBook (2006) with my current MacBook Pro (late 2008 model). I did not use it to migrate from PPC to Intel, as that is acknowledged to be suspect. I used PSE6 (upgrade downloaded from Adobe and installed over PSE3, I think) without problem both on my 2006 MacBook and on my 2008 MacBook Pro, after using Migration Assistant and across various OS updates. Only this PSE8 upgrade has presented a problem.
Throughout the same years, I have also upgraded PSE (and predecessors) on the same machines as the OS upgrades, with no problems before now. I even continue to use the X version of MS Office (2001 vintage); Microsoft and Adobe are by reputation the worst offenders in strewing files all over the file system and using non-standard installers. (There are only a few typical installation memes for OS X, such as mounting a disk image and double-clicking an installer. The PSE8 install disk mounted and simply sat there; no window opened with instructions. Opening the mounted disk opened a window with file icons. The read-me file, under its installation section, does not have installation instructions, only some notes. Double-clicking the PSE icon opened a folder with sub-folders and a PSE icon labeled Setup that, on investigation, was an application, which turns out to be the thing to run. Not rocket science to figure out, but why?)
So I tend to think that the Adobe file problem is ultimately an Adobe issue, since Adobe chooses to put files in places where, perhaps, Apple does not expect them, and uses a non-standard installation mechanism to boot (pardon the expression). And apparently you're saying that the files whose deletion solved the installation problem were corrupt, yet they did not appear to be corrupt for any purpose except use by the PSE8 installer. Operation of PSE6 was unaffected, and the PSE6 installer utility worked, AFAIK, to uninstall PSE6.
While I am certainly grateful that you provided a workaround, I would think Adobe needs to look at this more carefully as an Adobe problem.
