My mac won't recognize my ipod

I'm sure this has been covered before, but I can't find a post that specifically pertains to my situation. My 4g 20gig iPod works just fine, it plays all my music and I'm not getting any weird icons or anything, but when I plug it into my computer nothing happens. It doesn't come up in iTunes, it doesn't come up as another source in the finder, and I can't see it in the disc utility. I tried resetting it, reinstalling iTunes, plugging it into my dad's Mac Mini and have had no success. (The apple website says to restore it, but I can't restore it without my computer seeing it first, so that seems useless.)
My dad has a 4g 40gig iPod that is working just fine and is recognized by both computers, so I guess the problem is with my iPod.

Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

  • The finder on my mac won't recognize my iPod

I have a MacBook Pro from mid 2011, I believe, and when I plug my 4th gen iPod touch it won't recognize it in finder. It comes up in itunes fine and I checked the finder preferences, iPods should show up.  This is my first mac; I'm used to Windows. Am I doing something completely wrong? I just want to get my pictures off my iPod.  You do that with finder right?  Thanks for the help!

Unlike Windows, my iPod only shows in Itunes, not Finder. You are in a sense locked out of navigating files on iPod (iPhone, iPad) as well as being able to copy etc.

  • My Mac won't recognize my iPod shuffle 2nd generation

My Windows recognizes my iPod with no problem. But, whenever I plug my iPod into my Mac, nothing happens. I've tried resetting it, restoring it, I've restarted the computer and iPod, I've installed programs that may help the Mac recognize the iPod... and still nothing happens. I've read online that it could be useful for me to reformat the iPod from Windows to Mac but I have to do this through restoring it, which doesn't work. I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. I don't know what else to do... does anyone know how to fix this?

At this point I'm not really sure what exactly was the cause of the error (and I suspect neither the Apple staff knows), but I can definitely confirm that the solution I've tried works. The idea is to basically be able to plug the iPod Shuffle 2G without opening iTunes, and then reformat completely the iPod from scratch using the Disc Utility tool. The only way (or at least one way) to do that is to launch the Mac in safe mode. These are the steps I followed, taken from user JWA:
"+I fully charged my iPod 2nd Gen with portable charger. Then connected to my shut down Mac.+
+Booted into into safe mode (hold down the shift key on startup). This will not allow iTunes to start with the iPod is connected. My iPod did not show in the finder, this I think is a good thing. I started "Disc Utility" and erased my iPod.+"
"+I restarted my Mac, iTunes started up and suggested I restore my iPod, when I clicked Restore the finder then didn't like the format and I ignored that dialog box. To my delight, the next box wanted me to name my iPod and I started with a fresh iPod and all is well. I hope this helps!+"
Like I said, I'm not sure if the issue is actually with the MS-DOS FAT32 format or something else, but reformatting the iPod seems to fix the problem. Just make sure that when you launch the Disc Utility tool in safe mode, that the iPod shows up as one of the drives. If not, remove it and put it back in the dock. It should show up as a drive. Then you can erase it.
    Good luck!

  • After transferring music to new Mac, Mac won't recognize iPod

I just recently transferred my music from a PC to a new Powerbook G4 using my iPod in disk mode. I erased everything on my iPod, then loaded it with music in disc mode to put on my new computer. But now, I need to erase the stuff on there in disc mode so I can put it back in the normal mode.
Just when I thought I was figuring it out, my Mac won't recognize my iPod. Do I need to reformat it for a Mac since I was using it with a PC? Be gentle, I'm new to Macs and don't know the lingo or my way around very well yet.

Exactly what steps did you follow?
    1. what do I do with original iTunes folder?
    It's on your old computer.
What do you want to do with it?
    2. how do I get iTunes to read/ingest playlist and songs?
If you copied the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer then you simply need to open iTunes.
Since it is the exact same library, everything will be there as it was on old computer.

  • Itunes for mac won't recognize ipod but iTunes on parallels will

Just upgraded itunes to 10.5 and purchased a new ipod classic (160gb). All my music is on my old macbook, but itunes won't recognize that the ipod is attached. Finder will, but iTunes won't. However, when I run iTunes in parallels desktop on the same mac, it recognizes the iPod and asks to sync. How do I get the mac itunes to recognize the ipod?

Sorry for the late response. I realised my notifications are off. I've tried that. All my software is up to date, setting for wifi sync are all checked off. I spent 1 hour on the phone with Apple with no results. Most threads are about Windows PC. I run a a MacBook. Variables could be my Linksys router but i/ve played with the firewall settings and nothing. I have a range extender but all devices are using the same network. Any final ideas?

  • New version itunes (Dec 2012) won't recognize my ipod touch.

Since installing new itunes on computer, the program won't recognize my ipod.  It does recognize my daughter's iphone.  I've gone through several troubleshooting lists, restarting devices and doing everything recommended.  I did a tutorial to help me recognize the new features and the one that's supposed to be there for my device just isn't.
    Help?

I've had the same problem. Go in and unplug all devices.Go to Control panel> Uninstall programs> Uninstall all programs accotiated with Mac ****If you are Windows**** (Itunes,Itunes update,Ipod touble shoot). Just go into list a separt by Developer and click on each and uninstall each by apple/ Macintosh, what ever yours says. Restart Download the newest version of itunes then. It should work.
P.S. Where are you from? ( What state?)

  • TS1425 itunes won't recognize my ipod

I worked with apple support to reload itunes. Now my computer won't recognize my ipod classic, at all.

Do you have any other USB devices connected to that Mac Mini? If so, properly disconnect them and reboot your PC and then reconnect your Shuffle with iTunes running.
If still no luck, try a reset of the Shuffle with it still connected to your Mac.

    Hi TakesTwo2Tango,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like you should definitely be seeing a plus sign after tapping Edit, so I would try a couple relatively easy things (closing the Music app, resetting the iPhone):
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

  • Please Help - My iTunes library won't recognize my iPod classic

My iTunes library won't recognize my iPod classic 80gb. I try doing the trouble shooting steps on apple, but they still did not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to add some newer music to my old iPod for listening in the car or when travelling. Thanks a lot.

    Hello dmbnewfie,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iPod classic is not being recognized in iTunes when you connect it to your computer. I know you have tried some troubleshooting on the Apple website as well, but without knowing which steps you have completed, I would suggest working through the attached iPod classic Troubleshooting Assistant.
