Have you just tried repairing with Disk Utility?
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

My mac won't start up this morning ? It has a full charge of battery and even plugged in it just shows the grey screen. Any help.
Please restart your Mac and hold the 'Option'-key to see your start-up discs. If you do not see any start-up discs it could be your hard disk cable that is faulty. This is a common problem with Macbooks, but I am not sure this issue has been fixed with the Retina models. I've had this problem with my 2012 Pro, and a new cable did the job. Very easy to do yourself!
You can also start Internet Recovery (need wifi or cable) and start up Disk Utilities to see if your hard disk shows up there.

My laptop keeps shutting down to a square box with writing that says, you must restart your computer. Use the start up key and hold it down. athen it has some writing looks like german or dutch also in the box. The first time it did this, I updated to Apple Remote Desktop 3.7.1 and I reset the pram and it worked fine for about 5 days. Then it started doing the same thing, but this time resetting the pram doesnt work for repair, and I also cant start up in safe mode now. Any ideas what happened, or suggestion on a fix for this?????

I have already tried to start in safe mode. No go. I tried the single mode option as well. Volume ok. I don't have the os x disc. The computer was given to me because they could not fix the problem. Not computer smart. Does anyone have any ideas?

I responded to install new software message and was asked to restart--I did that--went to lunch and when I returned my screen showed the message that said, "unable to complete update for unknown reason" or something to that regard-and asked me to restart. I tried to restart and now see the apple but the time scroll is in an unending loop and my computer will not boot.-I recently installed snow leopard in order to be able to sync my mobile me accounts--since then my computer runs hot. Not sure if that has anything to do with current issue.
You will need to reinstall Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the appropriate Combo Updater to return to the Snow Leopard version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/. -

Ok, this is my big big problem..
One day, i was just doing nothing on my dear computer, starting up firefox or something, then suddenly everything stopped. I couldn't do anything. I forced-restarted the computer with the boot-button. When im trying to start it over again, i get to the white startup-screen with the apple-icon in the middle, with the loading-circle underneath it. After a while, the apple-icon changes to a grey stop sign (picture of it further down).
So, what have i tried?
Trying to boot with CD, says i can't install Mac OS, but i can go into the Disk utility, Verify Disk / Repair Disk:

I have time machine on my external hdd, but when pressing the time machine-button after trying to start with CD, nothing happens.

Ok, so i cant boot the computer with the shift key, just gives me bad error message. Nothing particular is happening while booting with the X-button and i've tried to reset PRAM.
I really don't know what to do... and my computer is from 2009, has worked pretty good (until now), and i dont have any warranty...

However, it sounds as though you have tried most of what's there. If it won't allow you to reinstall the OS, then there is definitely something amiss with your hard drive.
Sometimes a third-party disk utility (such as Drive Genius) can repair a drive when Apple's own Disk Utility cannot.

Computer won't start up and was previously acting funny
Hi,
I am in Japan en route to Bangkok where I hope to find a store that knows something about my computer. I have been letting it sit in my bag for about a week when I went hiking in Japan and now it won't start properly. If I start normally, immediately I get a shadowed screen that displays the message:
'You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several sconds or press the Restart button.'
I have tried this many time but the screens comes up every time now. I then try to restart holding down the shift key in safe mode, which did work just earlier but still with problems, but not it also immediately turns the screen black and shuts the computer down.
Does anybody recognize these symptoms and have some suggestions for what to do since I am traveling. Should I have my installer disk mailed to me from Canada or is there another way to fix this? I can't even get into my desktop so I can't run any tests or repair programs....

AlexSo I tried what you suggested and achieved the following results:
immediately upon reaching the root#: prompt the computer itself launched panic debugger and executed it then and finished but with no positive result. I wasn't able to type anything in at the root prompt because this debugger started right away and then I would restard my computer again.
Some key lines from the script I saw:
yellow text that said "Faild to load extensions com.apple.driver.AppleUSBEHCT"
and also an error code:0X00000000
Do you think this is RAM related or something else. If I need my install disk and I don't have it, can I use any install disk for Macbook Pro that I can get my hands on?

Mac won't start up... or eject a disc
Tried to re-boot my mac and got a screen that was white with a gray file folder. I very stupidly put the mac os install disk in, but it couldn't find a destination to install and now I can't get the disc to eject. Anyone have some suggestions?
It could be that there is a problem with the system files. There is a way to make the computer do a file system check which requires that you boot into Single User Mode. This is done by first shutting down the computer by holding down the power button until everything goes black. Wait for a few seconds then power up; hold down Command and "S" until you see a black screen (looks like a terminal screen) with info begin to appear; release the keys and wait until the screen lays out all its info. At the Command Prompt type this command:
fsck -fy
Hit Return and wait while the computer does a check of the file system. If any files need to be repaired it will be done during this procedure. Once the check is finished you will be prompted to continue: type this command:
reboot
Hit Return and wait for the computer to reboot. Now to address the stuck disk. As the computer begins the reboot cycle hold down the left mouse button (or Click bar area on the trackpad if it is a laptop). Continue to hold until you hear the optical drive release the disk.
This might be a 'hands on' job for a more experienced user if these steps seem to be a bit confusing. A trip to the Genius Bar or a visit from a friendly Mac user could help out here. At the forum level it is hard to assess all the possibilities. -
I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?
Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first. -
Screen goes black, won't wake up
I have a Macbook Pro 13" mid 2009 running Mavericks 10.9.2 and I recently noticed a recurring issue where the screen (note that the computer is open, not in a closed position) will go black and no matter what I try to to do aka press buttons, press the mouse, put the screen down and open it again, the computer will not wake back up. I have to do a hard reset of the computer by pressing down the power button for several seconds.
This has happened recently since I installed Mavericks. I have now turned off the option "Put hardisks to sleep when possible" in hopes that this solves my issue.
Other information: this is not an issue when I close the screen manually. When I do this, and open the screen back up, the computer is responsive and the sign in screen comes on. I have noticed several threads about this but regarding 2013 Macbook Airs and am writing another thread because my computer is in fact much older than 2013.1. My daughter's old I Mac won't start. It is not backed up. We want to get some things off of it if we can.
