I'm having the same problem.  Are you connecting to a Windows VPN or File share?

Hello cor-el, thanks for your reply. I changed my settings for downloads to desktop and it has appeared on there. When I double click I am asked which program I want to open file. I click firefox and another box "opening install" says I have chosen to open the file which is an application and do I want to save it. This is the only real option so I press save file. I get a box saying this is an executable file which may contain viruses - do you want to run. I press ok and the final box showing C drive file name and desktop appears stating application not found.
This happens the same whenever I try to install.
To my untrained eye the application is not being recognised as an application and I cannot work out how to get it to do that.
My plugin is still showing as out of date.
Is there anything you could suggest. Thanks for your time.

  • My iBook is also shutting down randomly. Can anyone help?

    Hello!
So I appear to be in the same boat as many of the folks on this board. My iBook (bought new in June 1996 - I am still on the original battery) will shut down after a few minutes if I don't have it plugged in even though the battery does not show any signs of being drained.
    So here are some details:
    • Shut down happens when the adapter is unplugged. Has never happened when plugged in.
    • When plugged in to the adapter the battery charge level (listed as a percentage in the gray bar in upper right corner of screen next to an American flag and the time) never gets above 98% no matter how long it is plugged in.
    • Even though the charge level says 98% the tip of my barrel plug for the adapter is green not the amber color when it has a low charge.
    • The details listed in "About This Mac" for battery are:
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 2476
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 2430
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 16301
    Cycle Count: 287
I tried resetting the PRAM and as far as I can tell it did not do anything - it definitely didn't solve the problem.
So yes, it would mean the world to me if someone could help me out. I really need a computer that I can trust on the go for work this weekend and am in no position to buy a whole new laptop. So yeah, any help or advice would be amazing!
    Thank you!!
    Ryan

    Thanks Richard!
The plastic part and screw twisted off. I can push the tab in with a screwdriver to latch it. I have the screw and battery taped and it seems to stay in place, but I should get it fixed. Just saving up the money for it.
I am now trying the battery and let it drain and recharge, as I have neglected to do that lately.
    Thanks for answering!

p.s it just dumped me at 53% capacity when I restarted. I came back to session where I was dropped and continued typing.
Thanks for the info and suggestions! I know I need to get some stuff done on this thing soon!

  • When I try to open up camera raw it shuts down Adobe Bridge, can anyone help?

I am using mac. My problem at first was that when I tried to open a RAW image it would just shut down either photoshop cs4 or bridge cs4. Then I installed that Camera Raw 5.2 update, now I can open a raw image if I double click it from my desktop. But once I am in bridge and try to open a raw image, it loads for a few seconds and shuts down bridge. Is there a way to fix this?
Even when I when I try to change the camera raw preferences in bridge (File > camera raw preferences) that also shuts down bridge.

Go to photoshop, and check , in the Photoshop menu>about plug-ins
What version of camera raw do you see?
There should only be one camera raw plug-in installed at the default location (check the read-me or the FAQ of this forum)

  • My mail application is canceling my shut down request. Can anyone help?

When I try to shutdown or restart my Macbook I receive a message saying that the mail application has canceled my request. This is despite me having already quit the mail application. After I receive this message the mail application starts up again. I have tried using "force quit" to fully quit the mail application, but get the same result. I haven't been able to shut down my Macbook for a couple of days. Has anyone any idea of what's happening?

Tomfromblackrock, if you're Activity Monitor does not indicate that Mail is "Not Responding" then I suggest you hold down the power button on your machine until it powers down.  I have had this problem, too and that is the only way I have been able to shut down.
My email account was hacked into and shut down by my provider until I changed my password.  Ever since I have not been able to close Mail or shut down my machine.  Also, when I do this extreme shutdown I have found that Mail automatically launches upon restart.  I do not have it designated to do so.  I would love to know if your Mail program does the same thing.  Good luck.

  • IMac randomly shuts down.. Can anyone help?

My 5 year old iMac has decideded to randomly die on me..
I was using it the other day when it all of a sudden lost power and shut down, every time I tried to re-boot it I could hear the fan/it trying to come on but nothing happened.
I have left it for a few days and come back to it tonight, it switched on fine for a few minutes then same thing again.
Now I can't get it to stay on for more than about 30 seconds (and not enough time to get the file off it that I desperately need!)
Research on the web seems to point to anything from overheating (again I can't keep it on long enough to check the utilities for this, although it doesn't seem very hot!), logic board to power supply to virus'.
Has anyone had this problem and resolved it or can suggest anything I can do? I've tried leaving it off and unplugging it. Tried unplugging all the stuff from it (printers etc) I can't get a genius appointment until next week and need to get a file off it for a presentation tomorrow!
    Any help appreciated!

This could be due to an issue with the System Managment Controller. What you should do is try to reset the SMC. This will help reset the power flow of the computer back to the factory defaults in case something became corrupted throughout general usage. (Steps Below)
There could also be environmental variables that caused it, even a power surge that could have cooked something internally. Some power surges you may not even notice because they can be small, but just enough to damage a component. Do you use a surge protection power strip?
    SMC Reset on iMac: ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964 )
1- Unplug the power cord from the back of the computer.
    2- Wait 15 seconds.
3- Plug the Power Cord back in
    4- Wait 5 seconds.
    5- Boot the computer.
Let it run for a bit (if possible) and see how long it will stay on.
If doing the SMC reset does not do the trick, then the problem will most likely be due to a Logic Board error and will unfortunately need to be diagnosed at the Genius bar.
Good luck MissLKMorgan! Let us know what happens.

Hi.Since I upgraded to Maverick my scanner which is Fuji Xerox Docuprint CM205 fw could not be used for scanning as mac wouldn't find the scanner. Can anyone help please?

    There's an alternative ...
Using Image Capture as a scanner:
Connect the scanner to your Mac whether Wi-Fi or USB.
    Launch Image Capture.
Click the very small black box bottom right side of the Image Capture window.
You'll see this pop up menu:   Connecting this (device) opens:
You can select a default app to scan (Image Capture) and select a folder from the Imort To pop up menu on the right to save scanned files to.

  • My mac wont shut down??

i tried to send an email of my isplash photo using my yahoo mail accout. my mac locked up and now it wont let me shut down or restart. when i click on the apple to shut down it tells me to quit shafri and shut down again. when i click on safari to the quit option is not highlighted so i cant shut it down. this is my frist mac and i dont know what to do. please help..

CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the Safari icon in the Dock.  Select the Force Quit option.  If that doesn't work open Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utilities/ folder) and locate the Safari process in the process listing.  Select it then click on the Quit icon in the toolbar and click, again, on the Force Quit button.
If none of the above works then press the power button down and hold it down for about 6-8 seconds until the computer shuts down.  Now before you try restarting do the following:
    Repair the Hard Drive
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.  Quit the installer to restart the computer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Help! MBP wont shut down or restart

My MacBook Pro has decided it doesnt ever want to shut down or restart. Whenever I try one of those two commands, it just freezes with everything cleared off the desktop except for my desktop background.
I actually usually leave the machine on most of the time, either working or in sleep mode, so it doesnt affect my daily operations...functions properly MOST of the time, but I'm afraid of the lingering effects of never having gone through the "shutdown" procedure. It's also odd that "restart" results in the same behavior.
Here's what I have tried so far:
    - Reset PMU (or SMC or whatever it's now called)
    - Zapped the PRAM
    - Repair Permissions
    - Run all command line maintenance scripts (daily, weekly, monthly)
    - Boot up in safe mode, then try shutting down (no avail)
Anyone have any ideas why this is happening and what i can do to resolve it? I've read similar threads in the forum, but haven't found an answer that worked.
I also recall there being some system log file that can be viewed or posted that shows what the culprit might be, but I can't seem to remember what it was called and where it was stored.
    thanks
    -Ken

You can go into the applications/utilities folder and launch an application call Console. This will allow you to look at certain log files. The more important log is the system log. check that for any errors. There is also a crash log. I don't have access to my mac right now so I can't tell you how to get access to it.

  • Can receive mail, it takes a while. Will not send mail, tells me sending 1 of 1, but never sends. Try shutting down and restarting doesn't help. What do I do now?

Can receive mail, but it takes a little while. Try and send a email but it never sends, bottom left corner says sending 1 of 1 but never sends. I've shut down and restarted iPad but that doesn't help. What to do to correct this and what is the cause?

In that case your email provider's server is having difficulties to deliver the message to the recipients email provider server.
This has got nothing to do with Thunderbird.
There is little you can do though. You may have the recipient to check with his email provider if they have any issues.
