My MacAir's fan is roaring.
My MacAir( 2011 dec ) fan is roaring wen heavy apps(Win7 via VMWare) are running. I also have a crystal cover but its well grooved for the heat exhaust.
Does anybody have the same experience ? Upgrading to 8GB RAM will solve it ? Is it possible to upgrade Mac Air RAM ?
My MacAir( 2011 dec ) fan is roaring
You ARE running Lion, aren't you?
Does anybody have the same experience ?
No. Never noticed that on my MacBook Air. Try removing it from the case temporarily just to see if you notice a difference.

Mini Mac, no light, and roaring fan!
Hi chaps please could you advise on my mini mac prob,
Basically unit was completely switched off for a couple of days, when switched on it booted up to a white screen with the apple logo and spinning timer which kept locking up.
I did a PMU which got me functioning properly (seems to be) but has left me with no indicator light and the fan keeps roaring away at an exaggerated speed.
thx for your time( I have rebooted/restated/shutdown several times but no different

IMac G5 (PowerPC) - roaring fan
As part of an attempt to correct some freezing/hanging problems after the 10.4.9 update, I restarted holding down command-s and ran fsck -fy from the command line. Upon entering command-line mode, my fan started roaring....and it hasn't stopped all morning.
This is troubling, as the last time it happened it was related to a logic board problem ... Any ideas?
iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8)Have you tried resetting your SMU? That may cure your problem.
Please post back,

Woke up this morning to fan blasting and no response to keyboard
I have been using my mac with a surveillance program called SecurutySpy for the last 3 weeks with no problem. I leave the Mac running all night and just turn off the dual monitors. Last night, after finally reading the manual for the program, I decided to optimize the settings on my Mac to better utilize the program. In the Options section of the Energy Saver System Preference, I set the Processor Performance setting to Highest from Automatic. All continued to work well till this morning.
When I put on the monitors and moved the mouse to rouse the mac this morning, nothing happened and the fans were roaring like a vacuum cleaner. I shut the computer down and restarted it to find that my keyboard was not even working. I couldn't even open the DVD drive door via the keyboard. The startup chime never sounded. After about 3 minutes, the fans started to roar up again.
I managed to open the DVD player with a paperclip and tried booting from the Tiger DVD, but again nothing. I even reset the SMU button inside to no avail. I was using the miglia tuner DVR card to interface with the surveillance camera through the composite imput.
Everything has been status quo for 3 weeks till I adjusted the energy saver preference to highest last night. This has not been a good day .
dual G5 2G Mac OS X (10.4.7)Ok, send me an email and I'll send you something that will help.

Fan makes noise, even after erase-install?
I have an iMac running tiger 4.5. The other day, I had kind of a bluescreen-scenario while to find a USB memory-plug on the desktop. The macine wouldn´t restart properly, not even in Safe Mode. While trying this, the fan started roaring, and never stopped.
I started the iMac up as a firewire-item, which allowed me to make a backup of important files. Then i booted from install disks, running disk repair on Disk Utility until it said no repairs necessary. That didn´t help my startup issue, and the fans were still going. Tried archive install, didn´t help either. Finally, did erase install. The iMac then started up with a "brand new" desktop - but the fans are still noisy like an airplane from the second I push the startbutton.
Called Apple Support, they suggested the running fan was a hardware thing, but I find that hard to believe, as the fan-problem occured while I was solving what I found to be a software issue. Any suggestions on this one, or should I bring the machine to professionals right away?Have you tried running hardware test?
(Install DVD/CD...hold option key as mac restarts)
...Just to rule out the possibility that there may have been an underlying harware issue that caused you sofware challenges. -
Fan noise with PB12inch?
My PB's fan seems to come on and stay on all the time now.
I've looked at the activity monitor to try and see what's making it do that but I'm not really sure what to look for. I've tried shutting off apps in the background, but the only thing that helps is letting it sleep for a few minutes and then it seems to quiet down.
Any suggestions or similar experiences? It gets louder than I ever remember it getting in the last 2 years - is that a sign of impending doom?I occasionally have this same problem. I'll sometimes find the screen asleep and the fan still roaring. Here's what worked for me.
Open Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities) and click on CPU below the window showing the processes running. In my case, the graph on the lower right showed the CPU maxed out by the user (green) with minor activity by the system (red). In the process window above, click on the column heading %CPU until the processes are listed by the percentage of CPU they are demanding. In my case, the faxjobmgr was demanding 85% of the CPU. I have no idea why. I've only used the fax feature half a dozen times on this machine and certainly not within the last few weeks. The machine has been restarted numerous times since I last sent a fax. Anyway, this seemed to be the likely suspect. I double clicked on the faxjobmgr line and a dialog box came up with a bunch of statistics and a "quit" button at the bottom. I clicked quit and the fan immediately began running slower and within a few minutes had stopped altogether. The graph in the lower right showed minimal activity.
Now, in the time it has taken me to write this post, the fan has come back on at about half-speed and the Activity Monitor itself is the single largest demand on CPU. I'm going to run a real-time experiment here and use the above described process to see if quitting the Activity Manager affects the fan speed. Here goes....
Bingo! within 45 seconds of quitting, the fan stopped. Go ahead and try this at home.

MBA fans blaring 10.10.3 NEW Photos running
After downloading and upgrading to 10.10.3 I open NEW Photos app and the fans start roaring and the computer heats up.
How big is your old iPhoto database and the number of pictures, etc? Is Time Machine running? Spotlight reindexing the drive after the 10.10.3 update?
In Activity Monitor, what are the CPU and Energy hog processes when your fans are in turboprop mode? -
IMac fan running all of the time
iMac fan running all of the time - how to stop. seems that after several hours iMac then shuts down on it's own accord.
Is there any help online - or take the 15 month old iMac to the shop ?You can try an SMC reset, which can sometimes fix a goofy fan:
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
What you're describing, however, sounds like a temperature sensor that's either acting correctly or it's not. I'd install iStat Pro from http://islayer.com/apps/istatpro/ , and monitor the temps and fan speeds.
I'd also run the Apple hardware test to see if it finds any obvious hardware issues. This Apple note tells how to run it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 (if you have Snow leopard, look down towards the bottom of the note for directions).
When the fan starts roaring, have you looked at your Activity Monitor (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) to see if there are any programs that are driving up CPU usage to high levels? That could contribute to an overheating situation. -
Mid 2010 Macbook pro "overheating"
First off let me just say I know there are many threads about this already - but all of them have the same kind of answer "the Macbook Pro is not overheating unless it turns off, keep it well ventialted and on a flat surface" etc, etc. I'm not complaining about my macbook "overheating" per se, but rather it is getting hotter a lot faster than it used to. I had a number of problems recently with my macbook and got it sent away to an authorized apple support centre where they replaced the cable that connects the logic board and hardrive (I'm sorry I don't know the technical term for this or even if this is exactly what they did. I know they replaced some faulty part that connected something with the logic board). And all the problems relating to that ceased - however about two weeks later and my macbook started heating up a lot quicker. The fans come on after about 5 minutes of casual use (internet browsing or word processing), and after about 15 inutes of doing something like watching a movie the fans are roaring away and the back bottom of the macbook is nearly too hot to touch. I've remedied this a little bit by only using the laptop at my desk and sometimes propping it up to give more air flow to the bottom but I never used to have to do this. Previously, I would have to be doing something pretty hefty for the macbook to start the fans even at the lowest speed. I was wondering if anyone knew of how to fix this? Whilst it's not a huge problem it is an annoyance and I don't know if it's a coincidence or not regarding the fact this started only a week or so after it got fixed. Any ideas??
complexcraziness,
try this next: log in as your administrative user, and create a new standard user — say, “Test”. When you’re done for the day, shut down your MacBook Pro. In the morning, boot up and log in as the Test user, without doing anything. Does it still rise to 71°C within a few minutes of doing nothing as the Test user?
Did you leave the MagSafe adapter attached overnight? If so, then another approach to take would be to change the Battery values in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences so that the Battery and Power Adapter settings are identical. Shut down tonight, but detach the MagSafe adapter after shutting down. In the morning, boot up and log in as the same user as this morning, but don’t plug in the MagSafe adapter — just run on battery power. Does the same rapid rise in temperature occur when running only from the battery? -
I've been having an issue with my Macbook Pro which started possibly two weeks before April 21st. My computer screen went black while I was in the process of using it. The fans were still going, I pressed a button to see if it were asleep but nothing happened. Then I tried to adjust the brightness, again nothing happened. So I thought perhaps it was a random fluke, pressed and held down the power button to force a shut down until the fans went off and then turned it back on a few seconds later. A crash report came up as soon as the desktop was back, I reported it to Apple and continued on as if it never happened.
April 21st it happened again. This time it happened just after hitting send on an email in the Mail application. I decided to call Apple support this being the second time. After a lengthy conversation with two people I was asked to call back when I had my installation disks in hand to do a hardware test [because I did not have access to them at the time]. Not even five minutes after hanging up the phone my lap top did it again. Causing me to force a shutdown. I made sure to take notice that the sleep light was not on, and again fans were roaring.
I made an appointment with the Genius bar at a local store and brought it in. They did the initial MRI test at the desk and it passed. Then they tried a fsck which also passed. They asked to keep it over night to run more indepth testing. After leaving it to test over night, the next day I was told that the Thermal Module and the Battery had failed the hardware testing and they would be ordering those as well as a new Logic Board incase replacing the first two didn't work. After two weeks of waiting for a Logic Board to come into the store nothing had even been shipped and on April 28th there was another crash. They decided to ship it to the repair depot in hopes that it would be fixed faster on May 2nd.
This morning, May 12th, I finally got it back from the depot to find that the Main Logic Board, Fan, Left Fan and Connector were replaced. Nothing about the Thermal Module or the Battery. I called Apple Care to try to find out why this was and they were unable to give me an answer. They suggested I use it as is until the problem occurs again or go to the Apple Store. I decided to go to the Store and speak with a Manager who proceeded to tell me that the reason the Thermal Module and Battery hadn't been replaced was because the apparently the Logic Board can cause those to have an issue? Anyways I went home unsatisfied but began to use my computer as normal.
Only a few hours after being home my computer crashed yet again. Screen went back while in use, nothing would bring it back, sleep light was not on, fans were going like crazy. I made my way back to the store for the second time today. I spoke with another Manager who had me talk with a Genius. This time they claimed it was my RAM or a software issue. The new RAM has been ordered and I was told if that didn't work then I would have to wipe my hard drive and manually reinstall everything.

THis morning when I came downstairs my iMac fans were roaring and I could not wake it up - after several minutes of trying I held the power key down to force poser off - when I restarted I got a kernel panic with the fans roaring before actually getting up and running
I force power offed again and this time it came up ok and ran until just a few minutes ago when I have another kernel panic
Here is the problem description from the error report to Apple
Anyone with any ideas on what to do to avoid continued kernel panics

Failure to Sleep... HEAT build up...
I all,
I have a week 40 macbook 1.83GHz machine. This afternoon I put it to sleep (closed the lid) with a fully charged battery. Upon return from my son's Karate class the book was not sleeping, FANS WERE ROARING, heat was incredible (really really hot!!!... hotter then an MDD without a heat sink), battery was delpleted to 1.5hours (normally holds 4.5 or so). It appears that it failed to go to sleep and remained active with the lid closed (lid was fully closed and "latched"). I have not been able to reproduce this effect.
Is this a common issue with the MBs?
Is this a sign of an ill SMC (PMU)?
Is there a switch in the hinge armature or is it a super magnet like in the old PowerBook G3 Series that is failing?
Thoughts?
(The book is less then two weeks old... is this a sign of bigger issues? ).Hi Adam,
I also had to force it to shut down and... upon reboot had the "unexpected" quit message.
So far my book has not repeated this misadventure (failure to sleep follwed by running with the lid closed and then EXCESSIVE heat and really loud fan spin). I hope it will not do so as it was terrbily alarming. It was scortching hot.
I will watch it for a bit and if it repeats it is going in for service or at least a checkup. I have owned mac laptops for years (150, 165c, PB1400, Wallstreet, Lombard and Pismo... iBook1.33 and now this mac book)... I have never had this happen before with any other book in over 12 yearrs of Mac Laptop useage. I hope it is a "one of" event. I miss my iBook1.33. it was about as fast as this macbook for day to day lite use and it never misbehaved.

Uh-oh... Boot failure, out of the blue
Got nothing but a loud fan sound when I turned on my G5's power this morning. No chime, nothing.
I forced shutdown by holding the power button; then I disconnected the power cord for a minute.
Next boot was completely normal, and it has been running quietly and happily for a couple of hours. (The only thing I did differently was to turn off my external G-Drive before starting up. I seriously doubt that's relevant, but thought I should mention it.)
Should I be concerned? Did it likely just need its PMU reset for some reason (if memory serves as to what the power disconnect does)?
My one other worry about this Mac is that it seems memory-challenged lately, but that happens mostly, if not always, when I have been working on my increasingly media-intensive MySpace profile. The computer has only 1 GB of RAM.Hi everyone,
Well, surprise surprise, it did it again, following an abrupt crash of Firefox when I clicked on a link in Google Reader--one of Google's own functions, mind you, not my RSS junk. Same deal: seemed to power on but then just fidgeted, no chime, and finally the fans would roar up and I'd have to force shutdown by holding the power button.
And this time, it really freaked out. At first it would boot if I held down the shift key, but that only seemed to work about three times. (The Apple tech who discharged it last night said it was probably just being a diva and the shift key only SEEMED to be making it boot.) I can't remember whether I ever succeeded in making it boot from the system DVD; it never would boot from the Leopard-enabled partition on my external drive, although various views clearly show this sector to be bootable. When it wouldn't do that and I didn't know how to reset the startup drive, I gave up, put it in its box, and made a quick drop to Apple.
One week later, it's back, and it's up, but we don't know what happened. Just like a car on the fritz, it booted fine at the Apple store. Many times, under duress, they tell me. Two different techs phoned me about it, and the second one spent a lot of time on the phone with me to make sure no possible culprit had gone unmentioned. All possible diagnostic routines were thoroughly implemented, I'm told, and they found nothing. Nor was there anything in the logs to indicate that the power supply had been failing. What I get from my conversation with the second guy and the guy who handled the discharge is that this was one of those things that can't be diagnosed if it's not happening. Some kind of intermittent flakiness, most likely on the part of the logic board. Both said I might have gotten out of the jam by pushing the reset button on the logic board, and the last guy showed me where it was and gave me something nonconducting to poke it with. (I forgot to ask him to explain why that remedy was different from disconnecting the power cord, which IS--they acknowledged--supposed to reset the PMU on this model.)
You gotta love Apple culture. I was treated very kindly and attentively throughout, up to and including the young man who was deployed to roll the G5 out of the store and handle the awkward and strenuous task of getting it situated (wheels and all) on the back seat of my little old two-door automobile. (Edit: And, I neglected to mention, they charged me a grand total of nothing.)
I'm reporting all this mainly in case it might help anyone else, but if anyone has any thoughts about what happened and/or how to prevent recurrence, I'm all ears. Ditto re: Leopard versions, which I'm about to go research in the discussions now. At some point during last weekend's struggle I put the machine back to 10.5, and obviously I should update that, but I have my doubts about 10.5.6 and am wondering if I should just do 10.5.5 for now. Opinions welcome (but I'm not going to sweat that decision for more than about an hour.)
Kudos to my PowerMac 7600, which got me through the week quite ably for a 1996 model with nothing more than minor RAM and storage upgrades. It is a grand old workhorse if ever there was one.

Having some trouble with my 15-inch Early 2011 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8.3
I was using the computer with no problems for nearly two years, then one day I was using chrome and suddenly, the computer crashed with a dark blue screen with horizontal lines across it.
From that point on, the graphics would get glitchy every once in a while for the next few days, commonly resulting in the blue screen crash. After a lot of searching around online, I learned that it might be a problem with the discrete graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 6750M) so I downloaded gfxCardStatus and set it to "Integrated Only." It seemed to fix my problems and the computer ran fine for the rest of the day.
The next morning, when waking the computer up from sleep (I had closed the lid the night before) all I saw was an unresponsive black screen, and the fan started roaring. I rebooted and some of the graphical glitches were back. Once the computer booted, it crashed to the blue screen before I could set gfxCardStatus to integrated only (the program is set to open on startup, but doesn't remember my selection)
Since then, I have found that I can't restart my computer without it crashing, and I am lucky if I can boot it up. If the computer sleeps for a long period of time, it seems to crash as well.
Is there any way I can totally disable the damaged discrete graphics card, so that it doesn't interfere with my computer?

Console errors eating up cpu, help?
I recently realized that launchd was using 100% cpu, my fans were roaring constantly and my battery was draining in around an hour on my 2011 Macbook Pro running 10.10 Yosemite. After som investigation, I came accross my console which showed that it was trying to launch something from optimum app, which I had already deleted using appcleaner. I can't seem to find the related plist file anywhere, and I've checked /system/library/launchagents and /system/library/launchdaemons. Anyone have a solution for this? Attached is a screenshot of console.
It looks like you installed something from your ISP to watch TV via the Internet, and it isn't working. I suggest you remove it.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
