My macbook air became too slow, my macbook air became too slow

Hi dear Mac users
My macbook air became very slow.... is it because I have too many pics? or can I do some type of organization that I never did before?

Saying it is running slow is a bit vague, can you be more specific about when/how it is running slow (i.e. what tasks/programs/actions are you undertaking when it runs slow?)
It is doubtful that you have so many pics on your Air that it is running slow because of that, you'd have to have 10s of thousands of pictures to even come close to filling up the storage capacity of a 128 SSD (which I'm just guessing you have.)
By "organization" I'm assuming you're referring either to doing a disk defrag (not necessary on Mac's, especially an SSD driven Air due to the nature of SSD read/write capabilites,) or you're referring to how you have your pictures arranged in files on your storage drive, which isn't likely to be the culprit, either.
Given the lack of knowledge I'm going to guess that if you're noticing the slowness during normal operations it is probably going to be due to having too many CPU-intensive apps running at the same time (running flash based webpages is a major CPU hog as well as some high-res video or 3D apps/games.)
Let us know more and I'm sure someone here can help you figure it out, though.
Cheers!

  • Yosemite slow on Macbook Air

    Help! Seriously....
I updated to Yosemite the other day and since then my Macbook is extremely slow...
It is really annoying, especially because I have no clue what the reason could be.
I would really appreciate if anyone has an idea how to fix this.
Apple doesn´t seem to know the answer! (What a let down...)
Thank you very much for taking your time!
    Some of the problems:
+ The fan is running much more often now
    + MacBook gets very warm
+ Battery drain is extremely high
+ Animations and scrolling inside OS not fluent anymore
I have already tried the following:
    + new install
    + verify disk permissions
    + SMC-Reset
    + PRAM Reset (Cmd+P+R)
Here comes my report, I really hope anyone can help me with that.
I am really disappointed of Apple... What a let down!

Had the same problem, finally realized that the FileVault Encryption was struck at 19%. Speed back up to normal after I disabled FileVault using terminal command - sudo fdesetup diable
To check whether the FileVault is the culprit, go to System Preferences --> Security & Privacy --> FileVault to see if encryption is in progress.. For me the blue bar was less than a quarter with status 'estimating time remaining'..
Then open Terminal and type in: sudo fdesetup disable
It will then ask for the admin password (to be it asked twice), then it was disabled... Back to normal life again..
Here is my terminal log for reference:

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First, when you are going to turn off or restart your Mac, you will see a box called "Reopen windows when logging back in" in the shutdown or restart window. Untick this box and see if the App Store opens automatically in the next startup.
If it starts, open System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Items, and see if the App Store shows up. If so, remove it from this list

  • Macbook pro 2012 is slower than macbook air 2012

I have found that my macbook pro 2012 13" (non retina) is slower than macbook air 13" my co-workers own. all macbooks have same softwares and versions.
Macbook pro has better processor but Macbook Air is faster. I guess it is because of Hard drive in pro vs SSD in Air. so my questions are:
Does anyone have a same exprience?
and if I change my HDD to SSD can i beat macbook pro in speed?
waiting for your quick answers because I am feeling bad these days.
    Thanks in advance

Take a look at my one and only user tip - Upgrading Your MacBook Pro with a Solid State Drive.
If you have any questions after reading it, just call back. The tip really needs to be updated but I just haven't gotten around to doing so... so many different drives available now!

  • Mavericks extremely slow on MacBook Pro Mid-2010

    Hi all,
Since i installed Mavericks its been impossible to work on my Mac. I've already done a clean install and no signs of improve.
I use Eclipse IDE to work, and its extremly slow now. Even can have some video playing on Youtube without some cuts when working.
What should i do? Downgrade to ML? Sell this laptop? Buy new RAM?
I've attached below the EtreCheck.... i don't know if theres something on my OS that may be causing this.
PS: ....and the OS already indexed all the files.
Big thanks for any help given.

    Best,
    Paulo Seixas

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

    Hello,
I have very similar problem. Suddenly Firefox stopped work - It was working few days after ver. 4 update. I was looking everywhere for some solution but nothing worked.
    - uninstalled firewall - did not worked
    - added full exception for Firefox into the firewall - did not worked
    - Firefox reinstall - did not worked
    - Firefox complete reinstall (registry included) - did not worked
    - IPv6 diseabling - did not worked
    - diferent proxy options (no proxy, system proxy, autodetect proxy) - did not worked
    - new firefox profile - did not worked
    - complete coockies, history... deleted - did not worked
    - there is only one solution which partly works - I have used public proxy addresses for Firefox but the ping is (750ms), down/up (0.8MB/0.2MB originaly (10MB/2MB) and yes I have tried different proxy server from different countries from my included.
    - IE is working perfectly and without proxy
    - other companies browser - did not worked too
    - only IE is working
    - I have used three different malware, trojans, spyware, anti-virus programs and nothing
It seems to me as hopeless situation or very clever move from Microsoft, I am forced to use IE - at least this works
    Any ideas, solutions?

My MBA fans start running when I play video too - the CPU's video processor is working pretty hard to decode the video. The fans job is to provide better airflow.  The time to worry is when you play video and the fans don't run.

I have a MacBook Pro.  When surfing the web it will eventually slow to a crawl.  When this occurs, there will be a small multi-colored wheel spinning until my latest command is handled.  What is causing this and is there a way that I can modify or prevent this from happening?  Is there a setting that will prevent this?

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

Better for what? These are two very different computers. Tell us which things you are looking for and we may be able to help you. Examples - weight, standard RAM and flash memory available, video resolution, etc.

  • My iPhoto slows my MacBook to a halt.

Help! For only the past few months, my iPhoto has slowed my MacBook to a halt every time I open it. I do have 26,000 photos in it, but my hard drive has heaps of space left. I am now loathe to even open iPhoto because of what it does to every other open app. It runs very very very slowly and takes forever to complete any request.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Time Machine is designed to run constantly and backup every hour - the whole point is to be able to go back an hour or two or a day and get =good data - yes you have a backup but if you have problems you will lose a lot - I suggest yo reconsider what you are doing
I run TM constantly - do a daily bootable clone - and prior to an update or upgrade I make an extra copy of my iPhoto library - plu I do occasional off site backups and keep my photos on the sd card for over a year - my p[hotos are valuable to me

    All,
A very interesting NOTE to this thread. In order to try and get the "ignore permissions" box to show up in GET INFO (so I could execute Matt the Magician's solution to file sharing issues)-- I ran the terminal command for disabling ACLs on my internal HD / start up disk (as indicated in the linked thread to BDAqua's forum).
Although I understand that this was useless for disabling permissions on the start up disk (as everyone here pointed out) and allowing me to see the "ignore permissions" check box - somehow it did seem to fix my file sharing problem...and that was the root problem I wanted solved in the first place! After doing the terminal command and a quick reboot, I went in and tested file sharing on the chosen directory and I can create new files or work from existing files in the directory, with both users being able to modify / and save from both machines and each machine sees the revisions and can build from them. Bottom line - I'm stoked and want to thank everyone for their help.
The only other tweak I made was going over to my wife's machine and instead of using her log in / password, I just used my name and password to connect to my main machine that was sharing directories. Maybe that's what fixed the problem or the ACL disable but either way...I'm up and running the way I want to be.
Hope this thread helps anyone else who has these file sharing / permissions issues with Leopard. Especially for anyone wanting to do such a simple file sharing set up between 2 computers. I wish I understood exactly which tweak fixed the problem, but at least it works the way I want now.
So happy to be done w/this one!
Thx everyone. Any additional input on what solved it is welcome, so my curiosity is quelled...
