My Macbook Air (circa ~2008, used) keeps shutting off without warning.

Hi, guys. I'm back again with the same issue. My aluminum Macbook Air (circa late 2008, used) keeps shutting off without warning. It comes back on as if nothing has happened, and I can even unplug as soon as I press the power button (twice, once to do...something, and the second to turn it back on). I have a brand new battery, so I know it's not that, nor is it an overheating issue. This is becoming very frustrating for me.
Before you recommend: I cannot possibly get to a Genius Bar appointment, because, unfortunately, Apple has no stores in West Virginia.
Thank you all for your help!

And have you already tried to reinstall the OS and you put in a new battery?
cant be monitor or fan, only possibility is onboard Ram / logic board or the SSD is going bad.
If the logic board / memory is bad,...the cost of which  would make repair a bit counterintuitive to replace given the age of the unit.
Does it does this plugged in or only on battery?  Does it hold a full charge.

  • HP Laptop DV5000 shuts off without warning

My DV5000 is shutting off without warning at different stages of starting up. It has shut down before the splash screen, after the login screen, after getting to the desktop, in regular startup and safe mode. Tried taking out the battery and unpluging the power adapter, held down the power button for 30 seconds. Tried starting up with no battery using only the power adapter and got to the desktop before it shut down. Charging indicator is flashing to indicate that it is charging when plugged in. Was working fine last night, then we had a power outage (car vs fire hydrant city had to shut off power because water was hitting power lines). Nothing else in house seems to be affected by the outage. Not sure if just a coincidence or because of the power outage that the problem started. Used canned air to blow out vent and fan areas still not staying on. Any thoughts????

    Hi,
I bought my laptop to two years ago this past October. I have tried to boot up without the cell battery attached also. To no avail.
I finally got it to boot up with the recovery disk. First recovery disk worked fine, second recovery disk, error message. Bad Disk

I have an hp a6130n desktop that shuts off without warning. The fan goes ballistic and the power button turns orange and the only way I can get it back on is to shut off the power strip it is plugged into. Any ideas?

Your system was released back in May of 2007 so I suspect you've had it for a while.  I know that the CPUs have self preservation modes that  will react if the processor gets overtaxed.  Try cleaning out the system with some of that air in a can stuff.  Blow out the heatsink and processor fins and make sure there's not a lot of dust around the vents and inside.  Make sure it's got plnty of air flow into the box. When the fan goes crazy it's the system trying to react what it feels is an excessively warm temp inside.  It can also happen when you've got a lot of different programs running that strains the system.  The information on the webpage for your system (See here) reflects a base memory of 3GBs  If you want, another GB of memory might help the system if it's a 32Bit OS or as much as 8 if it's a 64 bit system. I hope this helps address your issue. Regards

  • G5 iMac shutting off without warning

Well, it seems as if I'm not the only one having this issue. My G5 20" iMac also shuts off without warning. This just started yesterday and it can be on for a few seconds and kill or be on for a few hours and kill.
I already tried resetting the PRAM and SMU, but that did not take care of it. I saw the other posts about this topic and looked to see if my iMac is eligible for one of the repair extensions.
My EMC number is 2008, not 2056 so it's not eligible for the second one. The serial number starts with W8439 and looks like it falls into the first one.
Is this the case or am I gonna have to shell out some $$$ for the repair?

There are in fact two programs for separate iMac G5 releases:
    http://www.apple.com/support/imac/powersupply/repairextension/
    http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
So be sure to check your serial number and EMC number against both!

  • TouchSmart 610-1115uk Randomly Shuts Off Without Warning

i have had this TouchSmart for about 2 years now and it is in immaculate condition. physically apart from dust, which i clean out regularly, you'd be mistaken for thinking it was new. in terms of operation i have always been careful to look after it too, running regular scans of the HDD and hardware, updating drivers and being careful when it comes to what i download.
i have recently upgraded to Windows 8 Pro x64 (within the last 2 months) but didn't do a clean install, i simply upgraded from Windows 7 Pro x64, and to be honest after a few tweaks the computer was working better than ever, it was faster both running programs and in terms of startup time, and graphics looked better than ever.
then about 2 weeks ago it just shut off without warning, not shut down like if you'd asked it to, but just went blank like loss of power, i powered it up and it didn't do it again for quite a while and so i assumed it was a one off. but it soon started doing it regular. i've gone through every thing i can possibly think of trying to diagnose what the problem is, i've checked all wires and connectors, cleaned out all dust and checked for overheating, updated drivers, removed the extra RAM i'd installed not long after purchase, wiped the system and reinstalled Windows 8 from scratch, deactivated Threading on the CPU, and have reduced power to the CPU down to 50%.
this last action did reduce the frequency of the shut off issue significantly but it just seems completely random, i can be running any number of programs and it can work fine for hours, and then i can be doing nothing on it and it will just die.
i have run no end of diagnostics on it and they all say everything is fine, no viruses, no errors and no build up of heat (i've monitored the temperature rise when running and it never gets over 40 now with the CPU power turned down).
please can someone tell me if i'm missing anything, and if i can solve this without HP as my warranty ran out a few months ago, thank you.
updated: the shut off problem seems to occur more often when the computer isn't really having to process very much like when it is left idle or when i'm just using the internet, whereas if i play a game or use a resource hungry application it rarely happens.

I'm going to reply here just in case someone else happens upon this post and wants a definite answer like I did...
    My Problem
My computer randomly shut down as if the power had gone out. I didn't shut it down on purpose, hit a button, put it to sleep nor was it running updates and needed to restart... it simply, shut off.  It shut off much like the power goes out in a home, however all of my lamps and other electronics in my room were on. It was only my computer that shut down.
I followed a lot of advice in the forums and it did turn back on a few times but only for a few minutes before turning off and never coming back on.
I feared it would be the motherboard but a friend informed me it could be the Power Supply (the brick) and I saw THIS post and thought... it has to be that... or at least I HOPED it was that... or I was switching to Mac.
Never heard a response back to my reply to this post, and I didn't see a follow up to the guy above seeing if it worked for him.
    The Solution
I decided to go ahead and purchase the power supply part for my computer which is the HP TouchSmart 610-1130f All-in-One series. It needed to be a 150W (hard to find but is sold in the HP Parts store).
This is the part info: 609919-001   In stock   Powersupply - Madeline-R 150W 19V EPS2.0 Shasta
Upon receiving the part and plugging it into my computer, it worked. That was 9 hours ago (currently using fixed computer) and it is running just fine. I'm STILL holding my breath and hoping it doesn't go out again. If it does I will come back to the forum and let everyone know.
Hopefully I won't be back again in 2 years to purchase a new part. Lucky it wasn't something worse like the motherboard... having a computer that only lasts 2 years?
Anyways. Thought you should know random person reading this. Best of luck.

  • MBP shut off without warning on 30% battery

This is the second occurrence. Two weeks ago it shut off without warning at 10%.
My Macbook Pro is 17 months old and the battery has gone through at least 150 load cycles. The battery's current max capacity is 3205 mAh (out of 5500 mAh, so 58%).
Do I just need to recalibrate the battery, or is it time to buy a new one?

Reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and re-calibrate the Battery, you should do this every couple of months. Your battery condition meets the terms for a free replacement ...

  • MBP shuts off without warning on battery...

In the last 3 days my 17" MacBook Pro shuts off with 17 mins left of battery. It doesn't give the running of reserve power warning it just shuts off. I bought this MBP in August 2007. I have reset the PRAM and did SMC reset. Is my battery going bad?

I recently began experiencing the same symptoms described in that thread where my battery would get to about 80% and then the unit would shut off without warning. I purchased my MBP in 07 and the battery Model No. is A1175. It shows only 87 cycles. There is a replacement program for that model battery, but my serial number wasn't included. I still have about a year on my Apple Care so I called and, while they were quite helpful, asked that I stop by an Apple store to have someone look at it to rule out any problems with the computer's energy systems.
So I stopped in last night, and the tech confirmed it was the battery. His initial comment was something to the effect that battery warranties are only one year, but after clicking away at whatever he was looking at on the other side of the counter, he confirmed that Apple would be sending replacement free of charge. So it appears to me that this is becoming more of a widespread problem and for those running into this, I would encourage you to complain firmly to Apple Care and your local store and hopefully you'll get a free replacement as well.
    Good luck

  • My MacBook Keeps shutting down without warning

Every since downloading Mavericks I have been having problems with my MacBook Pro. The worst thing is that the computer randomly shuts down without warning. Today this has happended about a dozen or more times. Every time it generates a report that is sent to Apple. I have coppied the first few lines of the report and I have pasted it below, I can post up the full report if need be: if anyone can help that would be great!

    Hi Mende1,
thanks very much for the help; the problem only started after I upgraded to Mavericks and started immediately after that. I have seen that there are other problems with my GPU particularly the icons on my desktop decaying. My computer is a mid 2010 CPU, it backs up automatically to our AirPort

  • Mac pro keeps shutting down without warning

I have a 15 inch Macpro running Mac OS X Lion, version 10.7.3. It keeps shutting down without any warning. The screen just goes black and I have to press and hold the power button for a while till a hear a sound to turn the system off. This is happening like, more than 5 times a DAY. Please help, any suggestions are welcome.

Dose this issue happen when the computer is plugged in? or only when it's unplugged from power?
Have you checked for software updates? if so, have you installed all the updates? (apple menu, software update, install updates, reboot, repeate untill there are no more updates)
If the issue is happening while power is plugged in, have you tried a SMC Reset and NVRAM Reset?
Is there any thing externaly connected to the computer besides power? if so, haveyou tried removing those items; to see if the issue only happens while those devices are connected?
Do you know if yoru MacBook Pro has a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT? (apple menu, about this mac)
Do you have any kind of keyboard cover? if so, have you tried removing the keyboard cover, dose the issue still happen?
You could also try running an Apple Hardware Test. If it give you any error codes; I would suggest writing down the exact error message it displays.
Also it might be a good idea to set the graphic card to run on the high end card; and see if the issue still happens. (apple menu, system prefrences, energy saver, At the top there should be a check box along the lines of use best graphic performance at all time, check this box)

  • MacBook shuts off without warning

The MacBook I use at work suddenly shuts down without warning after running for about 60 seconds. This only happens when the battery is in. If I use the MacBook with the AC power alone, it is fine.
Is this a battery problem or could it be a problem with the MacBook itself?

Hi! Well, i work @ the Apple Store in San Diego and this issue has been a rpoblem for the last month or so. The good news is that in most cases the sudden shutdown was caused by a lack of software update of Firmware. So i thought I recommend taht you guys check for updates every single day, its critical to the performance of ur equipment. Dont get me wrong, I said most cases were fixed with the upgrade and there is a possibility that the battery is damaged. For that, I would recommend calibrating your battery about each month in order to have the best battery performance. Instructions for calibration can be found online or in your user's manual. I hope this helps and last but not least, go to the Apple Store if you have any questions, talk to any employee and they will find the help you need! Good Luck and again hope this infromation is useful.

  • Lumia shuts off without warning

I got my Lumia 800 a little over a week ago and im reasonably happy with the phone a little disappointed with the level of apps or lack of should I say but my issue is a bit more annoying twice now the phone has shut of without warning and when I go to turn it on it wont unless I hold the power button for some time in which it vibrates and comes to life but when it does the batt has plenty of life in it so I was hoping someone had a clue in what was going on cos I can't have it keep happening and would rather not have to stick it on eBay and go buy another iPhone.

I am having the same problem on a 12 inch PowerBook. I left it in sleep mode for a couple of days and when I went to use it, I noticed that it was very warm and that it had shut down. When I hit the power button, it gave the usual chime but would not start. I tried various things and finally removed the 1 gig RAM chip to see if that was the problem and it started fine so at first I thought it was the RAM. But I put the RAM back in and it started fine so now I think it was overheating. I've noticed before when it was asleep that it was not cooling off so it seems to be drawing power while asleep. Any suggestions on how to trouble shoot this?

  • IMac shuts off without warning

Hi, My iMac G5 completely shuts down without warning. It does this on a fairly regular basis. It may happen 5 - 10 times a day. My CPU temperature is consistently between 40 - 50 degrees celsius, and my hard drive around 52 degress celsius. This seems to have happened right after I updated to 10.4.5. Can somebody help me so I can use my computer again?
    iMac G5 2.0GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

t have a local authorised Apple repair centre where I live, so I guess I will have to ship it away, which *****.
I guess that means that "Sydney, NS" in your profile means Sydney , Nova Scotia, rather than Sydney NSW (with a missing W) , Mark!
Good luck with it. The Power Supply replacement is still listed as a "do it yourself" operation at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300205 for the 2 GHz 20" "ALS" model, but in some countries I know that this is no longer the case. Still, given the distance from the Sydney on Cape Breton Island to the narest store its certainly worth checking!
    Cheers and good luck

  • IBook shuts off without warning

    Hi,
How do I solve this? My iBook's started powering off without warning -- even if the battery's fully charged. I left it on charge overnight and only got ten minutes use out of it before the iBook switched itself off.
    What do I do?

    HI Oliver,
You may want to try reseting the PMU (Knowledge Base Document #14449, which covers Resetting Powerbook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU)). Have you looked at Knowledge Base Document #300552 on My computer won't turn on (Display troubleshooting) and Knowledge Base Document #106214 on Troubleshooting Startup Issues.

  • HT1941 My MacBook Air was running slow and shut off

Hi. My MacBook Air was loading pages too slow a for few days then closed down. Now, I can not restart it. Do I need a new battery? I had been deleting cookies also, mostly 3rd party ones, when this happened.
Thanks for any help. I'm new at this.

Does it start when the power adapter is connected?
    Try a SMC reset:

If no success, an Apple store genius bar appointment is the best option.
    Ciao.
