Hi CVGJ,
If you are getting an Apple logo when you start up your computer and it does not progress any further you may want to troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
OS X Mavericks: If you see a gray screen at startup

My MacBook Pro doesn't want to start up anymore.
When I turn it on, it turns on, followed by a white/light grey screen with apple logo. After a while a loading wheel appears beneath the logo and a loading bar beneath it. The loading bar loads to about 1/5 and then disappears, leaving the computer stuck on the the white screen with the apple logo and the loading wheel.
I tried to reset the PRAM, but it didn't help, it only got the startup sound to play when I turn the MacBook on.
What can I do about this? Hopefully I don't need to lose my files.
    Thanks in advance,
    Emil

Seems like I have to use my Time Machine backup drive to reinstall the OS.
    No you don't.
OS X can be reinstalled all by itself leaving the programs and files alone, provided the drive is working correctly.
I'm not quite sure how to recover the files from Macintosh HD that I don't want to be deleted during this process.
The TM drive is almost useless because you can't boot from it to recover your latest files with.
That's why I gave the link  for the undelete boot drive, you create and boot from that, access your internal drive and grab files, then you can restore from TM or other things, like the repair list of fixes I gave you.
Could you help me a little on how to backup files manually most easily?
The problem is your machine isn't booting to grab the files.
So you need to create a external boot drive, then you can access the internal boot drive directly and grab files out of your Music, Pictures, Movies, Documents folders (etc) to the external boot drive.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Or is there a way to do this without deleting all of the files in my user folders on Macintosh HD?
Yes, you can choose to create a
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
and recover your filesnow , or you can chose to try fixing the machine without recovering your files, but your taking your chances as we don't know how seriously wrong it is yet.
If your willing to take a risk then proceed through this list, Step 1 - 8 etc., until the machine boots up.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
If the machine doesn't boot up then you need to create the external boot drive to get the files before proceeding with further steps.
If this is too much for you, then call a local PC/Mac data recovery/repair service and they will handle it for a large fee.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't want to start

    Hi,
This morning, when I tried to start my MacBook Pro and nothing really happened. He made the normal MacBook starting sound but the screen refused to open... The apple logo on the top of the computer was illuminated though.
The only solution I found is to hold the power button several seconds then start it again, press and hold the R, T, CMD, ALT buttons until a special recovery screen shows up. After that, if I turn it off normally.
Finally, I am able to restart it and the computer will work as usual.
It is not the first time I experience this problem... It happened at least 3 times.
Do you know what is causing this problem and if there is any clue of solution you could give me?
For your information, I have a MacBook Pro retina 13,3 inches with Intel Core-I5 and a 128GB flash storage bought in early December of 2014.
Thanks a lot for your help!

    Hi there Lapetty11!
It sounds like you may want to try resetting the System Management Controller on your MacBook in an attempt to resolve this issue:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

You may also need to try booting your computer in Safe Mode, which is explained here:

For hoangtu23, looks like you have a graphics card problem that will need a visit to an Apple Store (make a genius bar apointment first) or to a Apple authorized service center.

My macbook air doesn't start after being for 2 months off? What can i do?

Plug it in and leave it on the charger for about 5 minutes then try to turn it on. If that doesnt work, contact apple and have it sent out for repair or take it to your local apple store. they will probably cover it for free if no physical damage has been done.

  • MacBook Air doesn't see wifi if booted in a room where otherwise it has access

If I start my MacBook Air in a room close to the router and then I bring it into another room, the wifi connection remains full bar. However if I restart it in that other room, it won't find my router again; if I display the list of routers found in the area, it won't display mine and so will not be able to connect.
If it would loose connection walking into that other room, I would think this is a range issue, but I believe it's more like a combination of range and some op system or wifi card... whatever issue, not sure.
Also I thought it was due to the recent Mountain Lion installation, but after reinstalling Lion, the issue still remains.
I brought it to the official Apple service and they could not find anything. They guessed it must be an interference issue with the router (doubt it, it's on channel 12, not 6 or 11) or that the router doesn't allow more connections (no such settings, plus time to time it does connect while there are no less computers on the network).
The internal network consists of a router with DD-WRT firmware, a Dell Laptop, an iMac and 2 iPhones, all connect perfectly.
If you need any more detail, please let me know and thank you for your help in advance!

I was looking for an explanation of this, but apparently the MacBook Air doesn't really communicate well with a router on channel 12. As soon as I switched to channel 10 (11 was way too crowded) my problems were gone.
Apparently there might be a problem with the MacBook Air's AirPort Country Code, but I could not figure out how to check it on mine. If you are curious and want to use channel 12 or 13, check out this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3656144
    Hope this helps.

  • Macbook air doesn't connect to Sharp Notevision PG-B10S projector

macbook air doesn't connect to Sharp Notevision PG-B10S projector with OS X, same as upgraded to Yosemite

    Hi There,
Whenever I hook up a projector that doesn't work with my MacBook (when it shows just a blank, black screen), the first thing I try is going to System Preferences > Displays and setting the resolution of my desktop to 800x600.
Nine times out of ten, the projector starts right up and works perfectly.

  • My macbook air doesn't have phone under messages - not syncing

my new macbook air doesn't seem to be syncing messages like my mini, ipad and macbook pro do.  I noticed under the Preferences, it has my two .me and .icloud email accounts, but doesn't have the phone number in there or any way to add it.
on another note, it also won't let me connect by bluetooth to my iphone 5 (running IOS7 beta) to use my ATT hotspot - when the other's do...
it also wouldn't allow remote disk installation of my adobe products (when mini worked just fine over remote).
Not sure if they are all related, but strange problems I'm having...

    HI,
Are you talking about Messages > Preferences > Accounts ?
You can add @me.com and @icloud.com IDS as valid AIM Screen Names.
One can be used as the iMessages account.
On the iPhone > Settings > Messages remove the Apple ID.
    Set Messages to Off.
Wait a few minutes and then turn Messages back on again
    Add the Apple ID.
Restart the Mac version of Messages.
You should now get one or two pop ups saying the iPhone is using the Apple ID and the iPhone Number
Accepting these adds the iPhone Number to the Receive At list of "Aliases" and the Send From (Start New Conversations from) drop down.

    Hi Chalmita,
For your immediate issue of the MacBook Air not shutting down, try the following:
OS X Yosemite: Log out, sleep, restart, and shut down
    https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18786?locale=en_US
Hold down the power button until you see the restart, sleep, or shut down dialog, then click Shut Down, or press Return.
If you don’t want the app windows you currently have open to reopen when you restart your Mac and sign in, deselect “Reopen windows when logging back in.”
If your Mac won’t shut down, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to force a shutdown.
Important:   If you force a shutdown, you may lose unsaved changes in open documents.
The Mac is completely shut down when there is a black screen, no active power light, and no fan or drive noise.
What version of OS X do you have on your Mac?  It might be helpful to back up your computer with Time Machine and update to the latest version, which is 10.0.3.  Do the same with your iPhones so that everything is up to date.

  • My macbook air doesn't let me use the internal microphone

My macbook air doesn't let me use the internal microphone while my headphones are plugged in.  The reason I want to use the internal mic is that the person I talk to can hear me louder if I used the internal mic.  Can someone help please ASAP?  Thanks.

I assume you're using the 3 slot mini jack of the Apple earbuds/ mic.    Use a 2 slot headphone jack that doesn't make contact with the the microphone contact in the headset jack on the AIr.
The Air has a HEADSET jack, in which either headphones or headsets can be used.
headset jack on left, for both MIC and headset...............headphone jack for earbuds/ speakers on right (listening only)

What is the official Apple erro number if the airport hardware on a MacBook Air doesn't work?

    Welcome to the  Discussions
Actually that is not enough information.
Was this to an AIM on PC Buddy ?
If so which version were they using ?
Was it to a Tiger Buddy on iChat ?
The log says it was one on the other and not a Leopard Buddy as there SIP port is listed as port 5061.
Also what routing devices are you using ?
Makes Models and version numbers please.
Which ports do you have open ?
What method did you use ?
In fact read this FAQ even though it was written at the time Tiger came out

My MacBook Air 13' (2013) will occasionally start the fan at full blast, not connect to any wifi or detect any wifi, and will remove the battery icon from my menu bad as well as tell me there is no battery connected. How do I fix this? I have restarted my computer multiple times, **** it down, and ran a diagnostic test to tell me nothing is wrong and my computer is not running any applications. There is no reason for the fan to be on full blast! when I try to set the option to show my battery icon in the menu bar, it will automatically uncheck. How do I fix all of this?

Have you tried SMC and PRAM resets?
