My MacBook Air freezes momentarily after update to 10.8.2

My Trackpad/keyboard pointer freezes after I updated my MacBook Air 11 "2010, model A1370 to OS X 10.8.2.
With a few minutes intervals the pointer freezes for approx. 5 seconds - quite annoying.
Is there a solution to this problem - I have noticed a lot of other users with the same problem.

This appears to be a usb issue. I've noticed that the trackpad/keyboards stops for a few seconds everytime a usb device is plugged/unplugged.

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been experiencing constant Mac OS freezes, as much as twice daily. When I say freeze, I mean that the whole system halts, the mouse doesn't move, the display does not switch off when I close the lid, the caps lock light does not come on when I press it. The only remedy is to power it off using the power button and do a hard restart.
It seems to involve something with maill application:

    HI,
*"repair disk does not fix any of the above problem"*
If Disk Utility reported errors, did you repair them?
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
Might be a good idea to run the Apple Hardware Test just in case, go here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2684
Try downloading and installing the 10.6.2 combo update here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959
    Then repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Deleting the com.apple.systemiuserver.plist file should fix the Status Menu Bar issue as "donv (The Ghost)" suggests.
One last thing... please click My Settings on the right side of this window and update your forum profile. Thanks!

If you use a trackpad and don't want to switch to a mouse, you can uninstall and reinstall all day long and will still have problems, but if you really want to try it, you can download PSE 12 here:

  • Macbook air freezes in screen save mode (Mid 2011 model using Mountain Lion

My MacBook Air freezes during screen save mode & is completely unresponsive.  The only option is to press & hold the power button to force a power down then restart the laptop.  This issue is not intermittent but happens every time the laptop is in screen save mode for any length of time (+20 mins).
The laptop is a Mid 2011 model. 1.8 GHz i7, 250 GB solid state HD, 13" display with 4 GB RAM.  I updated to Mountain Lion latest version about 1 month ago.

Hi there. I'm not using any 3rd party screen saver software, only the standard Mountain Lion supplied stuff.
I did have to get the Genuis Guys to reset my SMC as my battery, fan & power lead were showing problems.  Those issues are now solved but this has persisted.
I am considering a reinstal of the OS system but that is a 1 hour download following by ?? hours of waiting for the program to restart.
I'll try using one of the other screen saver options to test that.
    Thanks for that idea.

  • MacBook Air freezing upon wake from sleep

Hello there! Ever since installing Mavericks, my MacBook Air freezes nearly every time I wake it from sleep. Whever I open the lid, it allows me to enter my password, and then it freezes. Other times, it will let me log in, and then whenever I try to use Safari or another application it freezes. It doesn't completely freeze, I get the beachball and everything. What is going on?

    Hello there AustinJGibson,
It sounds like you are having performance issues with Mavericks.
It sounds like you are seeing some performance issues after having installed Mac OS X 10.9.
I want to recommend the troubleshooting information from this article named:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13895
If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.
An app you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the documentation that came with the app to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with it.Find the manual for your Mac
Quit any application that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an application may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click Displays.
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any apps you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk
Next I would perform a Safe Boot:

OK. Now, you say you got this alert through App Store when trying to download Mavericks or after you downloaded it and were trying to install it? Which is the correct case?
The error you are getting may sometimes occur when the computer has already been updated, but I don't know why you would be getting this message. I can only suggest that you take it in for service to find out why this is happening.

  • MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1

MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1.
I have a mid 2012 MacBook air. I just upgraded to Maverick. As part of the upgrade the ssd was checked and I got a message that my ssd was successfully upgraded and that it is fine. After two days a lost most of the data that was inside it.  Some photos songs and OS were not affected. All my document folder was erased and I lost all my work. Can you tell me if I need to go and replace the ssd or is this a normal issue with the upgrade to Mavrick?

MacBook Air computers sold between June 2012 through June 2013 with 64 or 128 GB SSDs are known to have a high SSD failure rate and Apple is replacing them for free.
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbookair-flashdrive/
You should maintain current backups.  Given the known failure rate of your SSD that is especially important.

  • Can't install os mavericks because don't have macbook air flash storage firmware update 1.1; can't install firmware update because OS is too old (10.7.4)

Hello, I have a Macbook Air, bought May 2012 or so that came with OS 10.7.4 on it.  Did not try to upgrade OS until recently.  Tried to upgrade to OS Mavericks, however received error message 'Before installing OS X Mavericks this system requires MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1."  I then downloaded and attempted to install said Firmware Update 1.1, but received another error message, to wit: "This update requires 10.7.5 or 10.8.5 or later"
Who can help me out the this Catch-22?  I thought about first updating to OS 10.8, but apparently that is no longer available?

    Hi CursedIn,
If the Firmware update required for Mavericks requires 10.7.5 to install, you may be able to download it directly from the following link:
OS X Lion Update 10.7.5 (Client Combo)

  • Macbook Air freezes when changing screensaver

I am having issues when I try to change my screensaver. Whenever I click on a different screensaver option, my Macbook Air freezes, and I have to force close System Preferences. I have no problems with changing my desktop wallpaper. I have restarted my laptop but it still freezes.
I saw another board with a similiar problem except instead of the screensaver window freezing, their desktop window would freeze.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Back up all data. Quit System Preferences if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A folder should open. If it does, look for a file with a long name that begins "com.apple.screensaver". There may be several such files. Move them to the Trash.
Test. If the problem is resolved. recreate your settings in the Screen Saver tab.

  • Can't install MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1

My macbook air is mid 2012
And I just update the mac on Oct 15
And today I heard about the ssd failure thing.
I head to appstore and find 0 updates there.
Then I download the MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1 here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1690
And it says "This computer does not need this update"
Does this mean my mac is good? Or not?

Firmware update tests the computer first to make sure that the SSD is not a faulty one.
Then update will not be installed and returns the message
"This computer does not need this update".
Does this mean my mac is good? Or not?
    Your Mac is good.
    Best.

    It's here:
