My macbook air has a flashing folder when start up, I just got it back from apple with a new hardrive.

I just got my macbook air back from apple because my hard drive failed,
Now that I have finally got it back I get a flashing folder and when I boot up to the disk utlities it doesn't let me choose a disk and it doesn't provide one to reset the OSX,
This is the worst experience I have EVER had with Apple and I need help.

  • I am locked out of my computer (macbook air) I just got it back from the apple store and they reset it. I put in a new password, and now it doesnt let me log in anymore. Command R doesnt work, all i hear is a sound, but nothing happens.

I just got it back from the apple store and they reset it (becuase it kept shutting down and not turning back on).
I put in a new password because i needed to start over from factory settings, but now it doesnt let me log in anymore. (I don't know if this is because it doesnt accpet my password, or I forgot my password in less than 5 minutes, or because when i typed in my new password, i typed it in wrong twice)
Command R doesnt work, all i hear is a sound, but nothing happens.

What I don't understand is why it is rejecting a password I am creating.
Perhaps the password you are creating is too short, or has characters that are not allowed, or is not secure enough because it is a word in a dictionary.
FileVault may have standards for what it considers an acceptable password. If the password is part of the 128-bit encryption scheme, it might have to be 16 characters, for example. (Don't know if that is true, but it's a possibility.) Check your documentation for password requirements.

  • Flashing folder when starting up ??

Anyone know how I can remedy the flashing folder when I start up my mini? I have a ministack and if I restart it boots normally with the grey apple. When I turn on the Mini I get the flashing folder and don't boot. Show a Folder logo with "?" . I don't have that problem with my other drives.
    How do I fix this?

Two possible scenarios. Don't overreact, and read both to find out which one is best:
    1. If you are getting a flashing ? folder that won't quit flashing ? folder, in some cases booting with the Option key is necessary:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
You need to use the operating system that is installed or a newer retail operating system disk to examine the disk. I'd only do this on a system that is backed up, and following the instructions in my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
    2. If it quits the Flashing ? Folder and goes to the desktop without issue, then you don't have anything to worry about, but you should backup your data in anycase as my FAQ* explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
The Startup Disk will simply need to be reset in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk so it won't flashing ? folder on the next restart.
Do you need a translation? Or do you understand what I am saying?

  • Trying to start macbook air, getting a flashing folder with question mark. Cannot restart from USB recovery stick. HELP!

Had to perform disc repair a couple of weeks ago and reinstall to defaults. At that time had spinning wheel when trying to start. Now have flashing folder icon with question mark, and cannot enter utilities or start from recovery USB. Totally stumped at this point.

You have not mentioned whether or not you are following procedure to switch to a different boot disk. Try holding down the option key while booting, and then all possible bootable disks will display, and allow you to choose the USB drive.

  • Macbook air has a blue screen on start up

    Hi,
My macbook air freezes on a blue screen on startup. I can see the cursor, but nothing else happens. Before this occured, the colourful "spinning wheel" used to come up with almost every application that I ran (for instance when writing documents).
I have a very basic understanding for these technical things, so I appreciate all the help I can get!
    Thanks!

This might be very easy to fix. Restart your computer and hold the shift key until the grey Apple appears. This is a safe boot. It checks the hard drive, deletes some caches, and loads only the essential drivers. If your computer boots to the Finder immediately restart it. With luck problem solved.

  • My macbook air has randomly wiped itself clean how do i get my files back?

i have been on vacation when i got back home i opened my mac and it had been completely wiped clean any suggestions on how to get my files back?

    Then you have a problem...
Did anyone else have access to it while you were gone? Exactly what state was it in when you fired it up? They can't just spontaneously wipe themselves.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • I have a MacBook Air and I use "Notes" when I delete a folder it comes back. How do I permanently delete it?

I have a MacBook Air and I use "Notes" when I delete a folder it comes back. How do I permanently delete it?

it all depends on what's running in the macbook air that causes it to heat up.
open activity monitor - change my processes to all processes - and on the %CPU, click it twice and see what running using 10% and above in the %CPU section.
highlight anything that are using high CPU percentage and hit quit process.  see if that brings the temperature back down to normal.
screenshot below is my activity monitor - have a look at it - nothing over 10% on the %CPU section.

  • My macbook air has a black sreen, I can hear the apple chime when power is pressed but is stuck on black screen

My Macbook Air has black screen, I can hear the apple chime when power is pressed but is stuck on this black screen.
Also had beeps, 3 beeps was able to stop doing command/alt...
    What is going on???

3 Beeps on POST usually indicates a memory problem.
You will need to take it in for service, as you can't even so much as re-seat the memory on an Air.

  • Why has Apple decided that online orders for Macbook Air display and speak VO when first opened from the box? I"m guessing 1%or 2 % of your customers know what it is or want it.

You are not talking to Apple, we are just users like you.  Only Apple knows that answer.

  • My MacBook Air has problems connecting to a saved network when I first open it.

My MacBook Air has problems connecting to a saved network when I first open it. When it idles, the connection gets lost and even clicking on the network won't connect it. Then I have to turn off wireless and turn it back on for it to connect. My boyfriend's MacBook Pro does not have this same problem and this problem started maybe 2 months ago and nothing about our internet or router has changed, and its only my computer having the problem. Its a 2013 MacBook Air and my softward is: OS X 10.9.1 (13B42). Please help!

    Hello, nheredia05.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
There are a couple steps that I could recommend trying.  Power cycle the router and test to see if the behavior persists.  Next, try an remove this prefered network from your list and then add it back again.  Make sure all firmware updates have been processed on the router side and the settings have been optimized for performance.  If the issue still persists try the steps in the second article.
