My MacBook Air has start freezing - Safari and Mail

In the last few weeks, I have had trouble with Safari freezing. No websites will load including the Apple site. Also, once that happens, Mail freezes. Any ideas?

  • My MacBook pro has been freezing up and giving me an error message.

My MacBook pro has been freezing up and giving me an error message.  I did the disk repair and reboot in safe mode for it, and then I restarted it in regular mode.  Still crashed and told me to hold down the power button to restart.  It seems to only do it while I'm using the Internet.  Any suggestions?

  • MacBook Air has a dark screen and works very slowly - what is happening?

I have a MacBook Air since July '10, and until a few weeks ago, it seemed to be working fine.
A couple of weeks ago I wanted to update iTunes and GarageBand, but since I couldn't find my charger and I really needed to update my iTunes, I just let it update without a charger. It seemed to be fine and I think I either switched it of or left it on sleep mode overnight (I don't quite remember). The next day, I opened it normally and it worked very slowly, it kept freezing and that little colorful rotating ball appeared every time I tried to turn on a simple program, like Chrome or something. I restarted it numerous times (it froze so much that I couldn't even force end the programs) and left it turned off overnight, but nothing helped. A few days after that I backed my MacBook up using Time Machine and deleted stuff I don't need (I previously used over 80 GB out of the 100 GB originally available). I went down to about 30 GB of space taken up, and after that my Mac started to work fine, except for the occasional freezes. It still wasn't as fast as it was before (I couldn't open a few tabs at the same time in Chrome, or two programs at the same time, without it continually freezing), but it worked fine so I just assumed it was because of all the space taken up. The occasional freezes still annoyed me, though (plus I couldn't put pictures on it because I was scared that the freezes would occur again), so I thought I could reinstall Snow Leopard. It seemed to work fine, so I just left it there as it installed. A while after that, the backlighting switched off, as it usually does after a while. What worried me, though, is that even when I pressed F2 or moved the mouse or pressed something on the keyboard, the screen would not become light again. The light was extremely dim and I could barely make out what it said on the screen, but it was bright enough that I read a message saying that Snow Leopard failed to install, and asking whether I'd like to try again. I restarted the laptop and the screen was not only very dark (the white screen that normally appears was now dark grey), but it also took a really long time to turn on. A few minutes passed before the Apple logo appeared, and it took about 5 minutes (in comparison to the usual few seconds that it takes me to switch it on) to fully load. Naturally, it still worked extremely slowly and kept freezing when it turned on, in addition to the fact that the screen was dim.
Could someone please help me? I am completely not a Mac expert so I have no idea what the issue might be.

    Usually signals memory problem.

  • My MacBook Pro has started freezing at least once a day

For about the past week my MacBook has been freezing daily. The spinning ball would just come up and  then I have to manually shut down the computer and boot it back up.

    Troubleshoot the spinning beach ball

  • When I turn on my macbook air, it starts to boot and then stops and turns off.  How do I fix this?

When I try to turn my MacBook Air on, it starts to boot (gray screen with Apple logo and the swirling indicator) but then it simply shuts off. I have tried Safe Booting but that doesn't work either.
Does anyone have a suggestion as I really need to get a couple of files off the hard drive.

The progress bar on the apple screen indicates that the machine is attempting to boot to safe mode.
Boot your mac and holds down the Option key to boot to the boot manager.
Once in the boot manager click on macintosh HD and click the arrow to boot, this should boot your machine normally.
    Also perform an SMC/PRAM reset:
    SMC RESET:
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
    PRAM RESET:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
If these fail, insert your OSX dvd, boot to boot manager, click the disc, reinstall the mac OSX.

  • My Macbook Pro has started freezing or 'hanging' for minutes at a time.

Cannot figure out what has caused this. Been doing it for three weeks now. Have re-installed OSX, wiped and restored from Time Machine but no difference. I would very much appreciate any help with this...... Console log looks like this:

  • My MacBook Air has recently started having substantial WiFi connectivity issues. How do I fix this?

For the last couple weeks my MacBook Air has started having some mighty substantial connectivity issues.
When I wake it from sleep, or if I'm using it for an extended period (say, more than 5-10 minutes), the connection will become extremely unreliable. This primarily happens with browsers, or the Twitter application. For example, if I start a call on Skype the call will continue to function just fine, but I won't be able to connect to any websites through any browser. I've tried Safari, Chrome, and Firefox while the connectivity problems are occuring. When they do occur, a full shut down and cold boot are required to make it work again for a short while.
Does anyone know what might be causing this? I've done numerous checks for malware using Clam Xav and Sophos Anti-Virus. (I didn't suspect that this would be the issue, but it was still something that I decided to rule out.) Additionally, I've tried connecting using both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands on my wireless router. Neither seems to be more successful than the other. (Note: The 5GHz works perfectly and without interruption on my iPad and desktop PC. The 2.4GHz works perfectly with my iPhone 4S and Xbox 360. I feel that with that in mind, I can safely rule out the router as the root of the problem. Both of these examples go on for very extended periods of time. I game regularly using both my PC and Xbox 360.)

    Hi Jollified,
Does your sound work when you try to use head/earphones? If so, try the following:
Plug your Headphones into your Mac.
Play a sound through them (a song for example), then stop the sound.
Make sure 'Preferences' is isn't open. If it is, Quit.
    Launch System Preferences > Sounds.
While the Sounds tab is open and set to 'Headphones', pull out the Headphones from the jack.
You should see your Mac reset to 'Internal Speakers'
Also, I see you have tried resetting the PRAM, have you tried resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)? Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
As for your MacBook not sleeping when you close the lid, there are many reasons this can occur.
First of all, check out Apples article on the issue: OS X Yosemite: If your Mac won’t go to or stay in sleep If you find these steps don't help, try a few of the following:
A common cause for the Mac not sleeping is your printer. If there are queued jobs waiting to be printed, but your printer is switched off, for some reason you Mac just wont like it and simply will not go to sleep. System Preferences > Print and Scan > Open Print Queue
Do you have an Ethernet Cable connected? People have reported in the past that removing their Ethernet allowed their Mac to sleep. This goes for other things you may have connected directly to your Mac also.
Try heading into your Mac Preferences > Sharing and deselecting 'Internet Sharing' as well as 'Printer Sharing'.
Also deselect Wake For Network Access by heading to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter > Wake For Network Access.
Energy Saver > Schedule > Startup or Wake - Uncheck.
Alternatively, set your system preferences to Never Sleep, and put into Sleep manually: System Preferences > Energy Saver > Computer Sleep > Never.
    Good luck!

  • Safari and Mail Questions

I have short of a million questions...  I would like to focus on a few that will impact me immediately when I receive my MacBook Pro and start using Safari and Mail.
First off...although I am using Chrome from my current PC laptop to write this topic I notice that Chrome for some reason is not spell checking as I write.  This is strange as I thought Chrome spell checked everything--but maybe that is so only if I'm using Chrome's default editor when composing?  So I see how to toggle a spellchecker ON but there doesn't seem to be any functionality with it to add a word or select a word spelled correctly.  The word 'formating' gets underlined but doesn't suggest why?  I hate the feeling that I might be going 'backwards'.
    1. Does Safari and Mail come with built-in spell checkers that work as you type and/or at least review using F7 before sending?  If not are there 1st or 3rd party apps/plugins that will do this?
    2. Does Safari have a built-in Preview option that works similar to M$'s IE9 browser (which btw does not spell check) where you can highlight text you want to print; enter the Preview window; view how the highlighted text will appear; resize it if desired; enter the printer preferences to select automatic double-sided printing which my printer does; and finally print?  If Safari cannot do this directly is there an app/plugin that will?
My underlying goal is to use what comes with the Pro and _not_ to end up with a couple different browsers and email programs.  On the fly spell checking and print formating what I want to print are two very important functions for me and I would like to know my options _before_ I buy the computer because one bottom line for me is not the hardware I use and take for granted but the software programs that I directly interface with daily.  In a way Safari and Mail are more important then the Pro.  In still other words I'm taking advantage of the need to get new computer hardware to end up with better capability.  I have to do enough homework to know up front that I won't be regretting the change.
    Thank you.
I don't even have the MacBook yet and I'm already frustrated with Apple just getting through this post on their support forum!

    3. Does Mail introduce an ad at the bottom of ever email sent like Gmail does or is it ad free?
Just figured out that on a misspelled word you first have to toggle the spell checker to get words underlined in red; then left click to highlight to get suggestions.  But the suggestions do not include adding a properly spelled word to a dictionary--I don't like that.  I sure expect better from Safari and Mail.
