My Macbook Air Is Making A Strange Sound

Every 20 minutes or so, I hear a strange sound as though I've pressed the wrong key or something. I've tried closing all of my apps as well as restarting my computer but I keep hearing it. It is literally driving me crazy. Anyone else expereince this problem and was able to fix it? I'm beginning to get a little nervous...

Try SMC and PRAM reset.

  • My Macbook Air is making a strange clicking noise and the startup sound no longer plays?

I just noticed about 15 minutes ago, that whenever I turn on my Mac, every maybe 30-45 seconds it goes, "Click-Click-Click."
I ran disk utility, and had it verify the disk, and it says everything is in the clear. I googled it, and someone had said that to stop the clicking, they just knocked on it, and it turned out to be the fan, so I tapped the part of the computer that was clicking and it settled for making a very low sounding fan noise. Is it possibly the fan and not the hard drive as everybody else has advised? And as far as the startup noise, it still doesn't "Ding" annoyingly. Any advice?

First action to take in this situation is to fully backup your data, possibly a clone.
Take the computer to an Apple store to have it checked out.
    Best.

  • Hi folks! My MacBook Air is making awkward little chipping sound... For no apparent reason. My Macbook Pro does the same. Goes like "chip... chip... chip", always three times in a row, for no apparent reason. Does anyone know how this occurs? Thanks

Hi folks! My MacBook Air is making awkward little chipping sound... For no apparent reason. My Macbook Pro does the same. Goes like "chip... chip... chip", always three times in a row, for no apparent reason. Does anyone know how this occurs?
It seems to be linked to the sound being on. When I mute the thing, it doesn't do it. When I plug headphones into it, it does it over the headphones.
    Thanks for your help!

  • My macbook air was making the 3 beep sound

my macbook air was making the 3 beep sound, what does that mean?

When you boot and you get 3 beeps and the system won't start up, that means you have a memory problem. This Apple note describes the tone/blinking lights in more detail.  Since memory isn't user removable on the MBA's, you should take it into an Apple store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for service.

  • MacBook Air keeps playing the restart sound every few hours

So my Macbook Air keeps playing the restart sound every few hours. It's that "Dummmmmmmm" sound when you first boot up the computer. Things I noticed: when the sound played and I quickly went to open my laptop it was like nothing has happened - I had my Google Chrome window from the previous session open, everything was just normal as if I had just opened the laptop to resume using it. This has only happened when the Mac is folded up. Today it just happened at approximately 10:00 and here's the log:

My MacBook Air is making a clicking noise every 7 seconds for 2 seconds. It started today, and I have had the computer for almost a year.  It is below the power switch and annoying enough that it is hard to even work with the computer.  It sounds as if a hard drive is trying to work. No applications running.  Ideas?

If its a MBA with solid state drive then I would guess its the fan touching something ???. I think it have no other moving parts.

  • I am trying to record a from my Macbook Air and an annoying loud sound, like a burp, will suddenly erupt from the MacBook, necessitating I start again. Any ideas on how I may stop this, or what it is??

Click on the blue Internet Recovery in nbar's post. That is a link to what computers can run Internet Recovery.
Do a backup,  preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

    OS X Recovery (2)
When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data.

  • My macbook air is making a very quiet, buzzing sound..

whenever i'm scrolling (on the trackpad).. It's coming from the top right corner. It's also making the same sound when it's loading or processing something - as if it was struggling or something.. Since it's only 2 months old I don't think it's a major problem, but it's really annoying and it started just now. Does anybody have a clue how to fix it, please?

Some times it is the fan that has a problem, but that makes more of louder clicking sound. The fact that it happens when you are scrolling makes me definitly think of the power supply. I could be wrong of course. Try putting you ear right next to the power supply in a quiet environement and then scroll.

  • My macbook pro is making a weird sound, please help?

    Hello,
i have an early 2011 model, it was running soo fine until now.
its making a weird sound, to describe, it sounds like a small *trrr* at normal state, and at high, intense states, (playing games..) it turns into a loud *trrrrrr*, but, if i hit it gently over the keyboard, it goes away, then comes back.
please, i dont have an apple retail store in my country, i need help from here, help me.

first thing to do is to buy a new hard drive and an external drive before it fails so you won't lose your files.
once you've done that, put the new hard drive in the external drive and open disk utility.
format/erase your new hard drive as MAC OS EXTENDED Journaled.
After that has been done, open carbon copy (if you don't have it, you can download it for free).
Once carbon copy is open, click on clone your hard drive.  Source drive is what you're using now and your target drive is your new hard drive.
Once carbon copy is done, turn off your macbook, open the back of your macbook, take off the hard drive and install your new hard drive.
After you've done all those, turn your macbook back on and you're back in business.

  • MacBook Air 2012 5.1 surround sound support?

I'm thinking of buying one of the new MacBook Airs. I recently saw a video on youtube showing that MacBook Pros are able to transfer surround sound. Are the new 2012 MacBook Airs able to do this as well when using a cable like this one: http://store.apple.com/nl/product/H7124ZM/A/iwires-3-5mm-to-digital-optical-cabl e?fnode=51&p=1#tech-specs?
    Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, there is no configuration option for the S/PDIF interface. The following are the supported output formats:
    2.0 (Stereo L/R)
5.1 (Dolby Digital - DVD bitstream or AC3 encoded containers only via QuickTime or VLC)
5.1 (DTS - DVD bitstream only)
To configure for proper 5.1 use, you need to set DVD Player to use Digital Out (Optical), not the Digital Out (HDMI). To configure VLC you need to set it to use Digital Out also, though you may have to fiddle with it to figure out which digital output is which as VLC's advanced configuration options aren't the most user friendly out there.
Once again, for the S/PDIF interface there are no configuration options available other than Stereo. 5.1 tracks will not play properly unless the apps used to play them back are capable of sending encoded digital audio. Dolby Digital and DTS are bitstream formats (encoded), and as such require that the app can work with those tracks.
Audio MIDI Setup does have the option to manually select Encoded Digital Audio in the format menu, but you should not do so as that disables regular stereo playback. The aforementioned apps will automatically switch between Encoded Digital Audio and Stereo, usually reverting to Stereo when playback is concluded.

  • Mac air is making constant, strange noises!

hello.  i have macbook air 13". late 2010 model.  today, literally from out of nowhere, it keeps putting off sounds as if somebody's "scratching" a rap tune...if that makes sense?  i have no idea what is going on.  can someone help?
    thanks so much!

    thank you, jason!
i hadn't even considered that info you gave me about the forum here.  it probably should have been obvious but it never occurred to me.  so thanks for breaking it down.
as for the noise.  yes, it is coming from the speakers.  i have not plugged a headset in so i can't answer that question. i will keep a set nearby and plug it in if/when i hear it again.
the first time i heard it, i was checking email, reading some news articles etc.  nothing unusual.
i will say, and this may or may not have a thing to do with it but you would likely know more than i would, i had been shooting some photos onto a memory stick earlier.  when i removed the stick from my camera and put it in my mac, i noticed the memory stick was a psp memory stick and not my customary one.  the photos were on it so i went ahead and downloaded them.  is it possible there was some sort of sound scheme on it that i downloaded without realizing it?
at the moment, i am not hearing the sound but i have just logged on after several hours.  i did not hear it earlier today either, after a night offline.  last night, after i ran the repair disk, i did stay online for a while and never heard it again.
again, i appreciate your input very much and will keep the headphones nearby so i can plug them in if need be and respond to those questions.  if you have any other thoughts.......please do share.  as you correctly surmised, i am a complete newbie....not only to this forum but to the world of mac in general!

  • My macbook air fan making a lot of noice

I bought my Macbook air about a year ago, 3 months ago it started making a lot of fan noice while beeing charged or while i'm watching a movie. I think it is a dust problem, but i'm a bit afraid to open it..
    What should i do?

If you really think it is a dust problem, it's unlikely that you actually need to open the case to alleviate the obstruction. With a penlight, look into the gap at rear side of the lid hinge, when the lid is open. You will then be able to view the inlet and outlet of the fan ducting. Using a small vacuum designed for the task of vacuuming small crevices on electronics, draw out any accumulated dust on the ports.
It is probably a good idea for you to install an app that will let you see fan speeds and temperatures during operation. The easiest, least expensive way is to use a Widget, called iStat Nano. With iStat Nano, you can make some observations of temps, before and after you clean the hinge slot to see if progress is being made.
If, on the other hand, you see that fan speed is rather high, but temps don't seem to be rising to make such a demand, then it could be that the SMC is a little out of whack. The SMC is the hardware/software system in the computer, among other things, controls the fan speed as temp demands it. Oftentimes, resetting the SMC is all you need to do to restore proper functionality. Apple recommends that the SMC only be reset if it is suspected to be the actual problem, so using a temp monitorig app like iStat should be employed to make that decision.

  • Macbook air and making things larger

i was able to make most things larger in my macbook air's mail program, i like to view it the older way.
have not been able to make the area of the Mailbox names larger, the section on the left side, does anyone know they type of font it is and how to make it larger.
also on safari the tab bar words are way to small for me, any way to get them larger?

I don't exactly know what you want to sync or what kind of expectations you had but I keep my MBA in sync with my desktop (iMac) for some of the content. I use a program called Synk to keep various folders the same so I can take stuff home or on the road to work on. There are other such programs. It is not exactly hands off as little things can cause conflicts in the sync process but it works well enough for me with a little oversight. My mail is "synced" because I use IMAP. If you had MobileMe you could also sync contacts and calendars. There are other options for that as well (e.g. Dropbox). To go beyond that, I guess you could backup everything (at least user files) to a portable drive on one machine and then restore that backup to the other computer but I think that would be too tedious.

  • My macbook air is making a weird squealing noise when charging.

Hi, recently i have noticed that my macbook air has started to make a weird squealing noise when charging. This noise is feint, though it's clearly audible, and is quite annoying when i am using my mac for things like word processing and internet browsing. It only makes this noise when the charger is plugged in, and not when it is running off battery power. Whats also worth noting is that whenever i scroll up or down a page in safari, or chome, the noise changes slightly. Again this only happens when the mba is plugged in.

hi, right now i am using my macbook air off the battery, and everything seems to be running ok. unfortunantly this is my first mac, so i dont have any other chargers lying around that i could test it with. However i shall definately see about taking it to the genius bar. its a bit of a pain, seeing as it's only been ten days since i purchased the **** thing.
