My MacBook Air is occasionally making a buzzing/humming noise

Occasionally my MacBook Air makes a buzzing/humming sound on the far left of the keyboard near the charger port. When this happens it heats up the whole laptop, prevents me from using applications (sometimes) and I have to force shut the laptop down. Also Safari doesn't work a lot of the time, even when I have full connection. Sometimes safari won't work and it makes the humming buzzing sound.
whats up with my laptop?

If a particular activity is using a high percentage of the CPU, it would indicate that there may be an issue. This would certainly contribute to low battery life and higher than normal fan speeds. This seems to be what you are describing in your initial post.
Which activity is using using a high percentage of the CPU. What percentage?

  • HP laserJet 5200dtn making buzzing/humming noise after printing

    Hi,
We have about three of these units in our office and one of them has recently began to make a loud buzzing/humming noise during and after printing a document. THe noise last about 5-10 seconds after the print job completes.  I can also make the printer buzz by removing the duplexer and puting it back in. The printer seems to load and then the buzz noise happens, again for about 5 seconds. I am aware of normal noise from these printers and this buzz is not normal.
This noise gets louder as the day goes on. Could this be a fan motor going bad?  We need to do somthing to get it quieter.
    Any help or suggestions?
    Thanks

  • My macbook air 2012 is making sort of a clicking noise

clicking noise or something i never heard of before. it's been more than 1-2 or so month since i purchase it online from apple. am i qualified to request assistance? i only notice this a few days ago.

Did you ever figure out the issue, OP? I've recently noticed this as well. The odd part is that if I tilt my Macbook a bit, the noise goes away. Then every once in a while it comes back.
I brought it to the apple store and they opened it up. came back and told me everything is normal... a few weeks later my ssd broke they replaced it (unnecessary info but i found this odd). i still have that fan sound, i think its normal. don't worry too much about it.

  • Help- my ipod is making VERY strange clicking/buzzing/humming noises

The screen went funky and at one point only showed the backlight. now when it's plugged in my computer doesn't recognize it nor itunes and the dumb think makes a very loud buzzing/clicking/humming kind of a sound internally from what I can tell. What in the world is happening? I am afraid it died and I am extremely disappointed by it.

Sounds like you have a hardware issue there--possibly the hard drive. If you're on a Mac, run your Disk Utility on the hard drive once.

  • While working on PC side, my screen went dark and my Macbook Pro has been emitting a loud buzzing/humming noise. How do I reboot? Am I totally dead?

Help, I was working on my pc partition, using quick books and my machine suddenly freaked out. Screen is dark, backlit keyboard is lit and it is emitting a LOUD humming/buzzing. I can't reboot, turn it off, nothing. I unplugged the power chord in hopes that the batter will run out but what the heck happened and is my machine completely gone? Is this under warranty? I bought this thing in august of 2010 so it's not yet a year old.
    HELP! HELP! HELP!

Hold down the power button and it will shut down. Have you not read the User Guide? (Chapter 4).

  • Quicksilver case buzzing & humming

    Hello All,
Since installing a second internal HD the other week (specs below), the case has been making a buzzing/humming noise. Both HDs check out as okay re: SMART Status; it’s not apparently related to HD spin-up or anything similar.
I’ve found that the noise level diminishes if the top and/or side covers are pressed down/in, but does not altogether go away.
Additionally, the buzzing/humming greatly increases if a software CD is in the optical drive.
It really does sound like a loose panel… or maybe the fan is wobbly at the power supply and causing these vibrations?
I’m hoping that the problem was initiated by the action of lifting the computer up from under the desk where it has sat for the last six years, which may have caused some sort of ‘flexing’ or dis-alignment in the case or nearby hardware item, and which hopefully can be fixed by tightening screws in the panels or reseating the optical drive/power supply box.
I’ve found the KB document for replacing the optical drive (just want to remove and reseat), but can find nothing here about reseating the power supply box or the left-side and top panels.
    Questions:
    1. If anyone else has encountered this, how was it resolved?
    2. What are the precautions for reseating the power supply box and left-side and top panels?
    Any other suggestions gratefully accepted.
    Cheers,
    Dennis

    Hi-
Since this began after the hard drive installation, I would start there. It may be that the carrier tabs didn't fit into the floor of the case properly, allowing vibration from the drive. Insure the drive is properly attached to the carrier as well.
I would highly doubt that the PSU is loose, as it is attached by an internal bracket to the rear of the optical drive carrier, and from the outside by three screws. Check for looseness, but "reseating" shouldn't be necessary.
The left side panel is held by four screws externally, and connected to the steel case in the center of the Apple. To access the clip for the center mount, the case fan should be removed to allow access from the interior of the tower.
I would check that the case fan and shroud are not loose, or mis-seated.
The top panel requires the top handles and the face panel to be removed. the panel then slides forward and lifts off. The top panel has a loose fit, so reseating will most likely not accomplish anything.
It would be best to locate the rotating mechanical device that is causing the vibration.
Fans and housings, hard drives and carriers, and optical drive would be the items to thoroughly investigate.
Though the case decorative panels may be making the noise, they are not the cause. They are all, with the exception of the rear panel and I/O port surround, by design, loose fit. Your intentions are good, but the real culprit is still in there......somewhere.

  • Macbook air making buzzing/humming when moved

I've had my macbook air for about 3 months and I hadn't had any problems with it. However, in the past few weeks it's started to make a very loud buzzing/humming noise. Sometimes it does it when the computer is just sitting still on my desk, but other times , if the table its on is shaken, or the computer itself is moved, the noise will start again. If I shut the computer and put it to sleep, the noise continues, but stops as soon as the computer is opened again. A few minutes later, the noise starts again. This process repeats several times and is honestly getting very annoying. The fan is always running less than 2500 rpms when it makes the noise and there aren't any extensive applications running (usually only safari and mail).
Is anyone else having this problem? Or has anyone else solved this problem? I've considered taking it to the Apple store, but it doesn't happen every single time the computer is used and would be hard to show to the people at the store.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated... thanks!

I've actually been having the same problem, and I've had my MBA for about the same amount of time. My computer also gets very warm, so I think its a fan issue. Sometimes the humming/buzzing stops and then it restarts after a minute. Mine sounds like its coming from under the power button. If I move the computer around, the noise changes slightly, but it goes back to the same drone. I think the average fan speed is 2500 if you aren't doing anything taxing. Mine hovers around 1000.
I'm going to take my computer into the Apple Store to see what they say...
Sorry I'm not much help. I just don't think you're the only one with a strange noise problem...

  • New Macbook Air makes a strange zipping noise?

When I open the lid to resume from sleep mode the computer makes a strage zipping niose. It sounds almost like a hardrive spin up. I suppose it could be the fans, but I don't believe it was making this niose before? Is this normal of a Macbook Air?

Then you have a fan noise,...the bearings could be defective.

  • Macbook Air Beeping Sounds

My refurbished 13" Macbook Air has been making beep sounds every time I close it/put it to sleep. When i open it back up it shows a black screen and beeping noises. (3 beeping noises every 5 seconds) I just got a new hardware and I am not sure it it is the problem .How can I make it stop? I let it beep until the battery dies and i plug it into a power source and it turns on but I can't seem to make it stop beeping.

The 3 beeps every 5 seconds usually occurs when booting a system that has memory issues. The beeps indicate that the memory doesn't pass the power on self test the system does. I'm not familiar with that also happening around sleep, however, would recommend you take it into Apple.

My MacBook Air 13' (2013) will occasionally start the fan at full blast, not connect to any wifi or detect any wifi, and will remove the battery icon from my menu bad as well as tell me there is no battery connected. How do I fix this? I have restarted my computer multiple times, **** it down, and ran a diagnostic test to tell me nothing is wrong and my computer is not running any applications. There is no reason for the fan to be on full blast! when I try to set the option to show my battery icon in the menu bar, it will automatically uncheck. How do I fix all of this?

Have you tried SMC and PRAM resets?

I purchased a Macbook Air 11" in January 2011. It has one key on the keyboard which sticks making an irritating clicking sound that I would like to get fixed. I took it into my local iStore but they were not at all encouraging, saying they doubt that Apple warranty will cover something like this, and also that the whole keyboard would have to be replaced as they don't do individual key repairs.
This is very unreasonable to me. Firstly, the keyboard does work (is not actually broken) although the intermittent clicking sound of a single key is very irritating to me and I expect more from an Apple product than a flawed keyboard.
Any thoughts, tips and insight on this greatly appreciated.

Just wanted to conclude by saying that I did go to an Apple store and after supplying proof of purchase and verifying the warranty etc, I had my MacBook checked out by one of the technicians who (after finding that my machine was immaculate bar the sticky keyboard of course) they replaced the entire keyboard within a week.
I was so happy with the helpful and prompt service and am now so happy with my new silent keyboard!
Also wanted to add that the young guy who told me at the iStore that he doubted Apple would support this and guessed Apple likely say it was due to user damage was being a tool, and he was obviously assuming  that I had done something wrong to break my keyboard.
This was my first Mac purchase and I was delighted to find that the support is genuine and not just a rumor... I have since gone on to purchase an iPad2 will probably buy the iMac too once my trusty PC needs replacing. I was never a PC hater and got on well with windows, and was actually reluctant to make the change - but so far so good :)
    Thanks for all the help!

  • Why does my Macbook Air make a single buzz/beep?

Why does my Macbook Air make a single buzz/beep every time I open it or turn it on? It doesn't happen after again after the initial buzz. If I open it after it has been sleeping, it starts up and then there is a buzz. This has only happened since I downloaded iOS Maverick.

    Beeps on startup:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images.
5 beeps = processor is not usable
