My Macbook air laptop sound, fan and speed is messed up, how do I fix it?

Where do I start. One random day I came home to find out that my sound has been muted. I tried to fix it with headphones, reseting the PRAM, google, and even by asking my schools computer tech. Some times the mute button would disappear and the sound bar would be in color but their would still be no sound. After  the computer tech went on his account on the laptop to un-mute it, which he couldnt, he told me that my built in speakers dont work and would need to be replaced next year. Im like okay no problem, that same day i closed my laptop and found that the light was still on, I asked a friend and he said the black bar between the keypad and screen is what activates the laptop to shut off, which means its broken, so in between class periods i either shut down my laptop or put it to sleep. The next day my laptop starts to run slow and as soon as i power it on the fan runs immediately but the laptop isnt hot. My mouse moves at normal speed but my applications are running slow. This all happened in one week which is this week. My battery dies at a normal pace though.
More information
This is a school given macbook air for a magnet program called iPrep, so i cant download anything with our administration password
This is my second laptop out of the 3 years ive been in the program. My first laptop started to break after the sound got muted and my laptop ended up with an X on the battery and would only turn on when a charger is plug but would go super slow. This makes me scared cause i dont want that happening at all to this one.
Problems
Sound is muted, it sometimes un-mutes but there is still no sound, internal speakers broken
When closed the screen display is still open
Computer applications go slow, fan turns on immediately
Any help, this is bothering me so much

Hi Jollified,
Does your sound work when you try to use head/earphones? If so, try the following:
Plug your Headphones into your Mac.
Play a sound through them (a song for example), then stop the sound.
Make sure 'Preferences' is isn't open. If it is, Quit.
Launch System Preferences > Sounds.
While the Sounds tab is open and set to 'Headphones', pull out the Headphones from the jack.
You should see your Mac reset to 'Internal Speakers'
Also, I see you have tried resetting the PRAM, have you tried resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)? Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
As for your MacBook not sleeping when you close the lid, there are many reasons this can occur.
First of all, check out Apples article on the issue: OS X Yosemite: If your Mac won’t go to or stay in sleep If you find these steps don't help, try a few of the following:
A common cause for the Mac not sleeping is your printer. If there are queued jobs waiting to be printed, but your printer is switched off, for some reason you Mac just wont like it and simply will not go to sleep. System Preferences > Print and Scan > Open Print Queue
Do you have an Ethernet Cable connected? People have reported in the past that removing their Ethernet allowed their Mac to sleep. This goes for other things you may have connected directly to your Mac also.
Try heading into your Mac Preferences > Sharing and deselecting 'Internet Sharing' as well as 'Printer Sharing'.
Also deselect Wake For Network Access by heading to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter > Wake For Network Access.
Energy Saver > Schedule > Startup or Wake - Uncheck.
Alternatively, set your system preferences to Never Sleep, and put into Sleep manually: System Preferences > Energy Saver > Computer Sleep > Never.
Good luck!

  • Whenever I FaceTime on my new MacBook Air, the microphone stops working after a little while, how can I fix this?

I recently got a refurbished MacBook Air from Apple. Whenever I FaceTime, my microphone stops working, and the person on the other end can't hear me. I end up having to FaceTime them on my iPod Touch, which can be a bit frustrating. Are there any solustions to this?

Why does that seem likely to be a hardware issue? How did you come to that conclusion? Do you know something about this issue that indicates that? (I realise that this might sound short and rude - I am not trying to be rude here - just to understand) My thought is that conventional troubleshooting would say that this is a software issue because it is fixed with a restart.
I also have this problem. The camera quits working after some time - I have not been able to make it stop working. Sometimes it is after I suspend the computer (close the lid) other times it still works.
All I know is that intermittently my camera stops working and it is a big pain to have to reboot whenever I am going have a video chat.
Anyone got any solutions, I'm not covered by applecare so would rather try and fix it myself if possible?

  • My new MacBook Air won't install the latest software update.  How do I fix that?

I can't get my new MacBook Air to install the latest software update.
It keeps telling me that an "unexpected error" occurred.
    How do I fix this?

Your posting above says you're running Lion (Version 10.7.3).
Going to the current version of Mountain Lion (Version 10.8.2) requires a $20 purchase (upgrade fee) from the App Store.
Further, if your iMac is older than mid-2007, it cannot be upgraded to Mountain Lion.  Only mid-2007 or newer iMacs can handle it.

  • My macbook air does not work, saying i have no memory, how can i fix it?

The computed showed a message, saying that i have no memory enouth, the day after when i turned it on appeard that beggining messages, then anything else, even the dock. i dont know how can i delete my archives and stuff, somebody can help me?

Does it say hard drive space or application memory? Because if it is application memory then deleting items won't work. You'll have to open up Activity Monitor in Applications > Utilities and sort each process according to memory. Then you will see what is using up all the resources.

When I'm streaming videos from my Macbook Air to my AppleTV, my Macbook Air gets rather hot and the fan works hard and is loud trying to keep the laptop cool.  Is this harmful to the laptop?  Is this normal?

My MBA fans start running when I play video too - the CPU's video processor is working pretty hard to decode the video. The fans job is to provide better airflow.  The time to worry is when you play video and the fans don't run.

Apps for OSX aren't in iTunes: they are in the App Store in your Applications folder. The payment method is the one registered in iTunes. There's no app actually called Yoga Studio, though there are several Yoga apps. There is an iOS app called Yoga Studio but it appears to have no OSX equivalent, though I haven't done a detailed search.

Are you referencing your Photoshop image files, or Photoshop application files?
If the latter, cease and desist at once!
Always install Photoshop from scratch, from the original media: CD/DVD or download.
If the former, please provide details:
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
Note that this is boilerplate text.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,

    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.

  • MY NEW MACBOOK AIR IS HEATING UP AND ITS BATTERY IS DRAINING OUT REALLY FAST

MY NEW MACBOOK AIR IS HEATING UP AND ITS BATTERY IS DRAINING OUT REALLY FAST. WHAT TO DO? I BOUGHT IT JUST 5 DAYS AGO.

If you are within the 14 day purchase period you can exchange your MBP for a replacement.  If not you can have it checked out at the Apple store genius bar.
CPU intensive applications will place stress on the CPU/GPU which will create heat and speed up the fans.  That is normal.  If you will, download from the Internet iStat pro and install it.  When your MBP gets hot, post an image such as this from mine:
Also open Activity Monitor and set  to show 'All Processes' and '%CPU' to display values from high to low.  Post that as well like this:
From this information we may be able to tell if there are any issues or not.
    Ciao.

  • My macbook air becomes so hot and noisy

I don't know why my macbook air becomes so hot and i can even hear some running sound inside my mac.
This has been happened for a few days and every time i need to shut down my mac and turn it on again to stop this weird phenomenon.
May I know why is it so?
    THANKSSS.

The noise you are hearing is probably the fans.
Make sure your MacBook Air is well ventilated >  Mac notebooks: Operating temperature
If it's not a ventilation issue, try an SMC reset > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • Macbook Air gets really sluggish and incredibly slow

Hi, my Macbook Air bought last December (2008) becomes very sluggish, as in really slow after some very light usage.
It usually happens when I'm watching a YouTube video (or any .flv video) in either Firefox or Safari or if I'm browsing for a long period. It's not just the browser that becomes slow, it's the whole computer. The video cannot be watched and it becomes all jittery. Switching between tabs takes a while, and even scrolling down a page has a delay. Typing also has a delay, and the whole experience is just horrible. Moving along the dock, the icons magnify at irregular intervals and launching an application takes extremely long, even the System Preferences Pane.
The happens whether I have three or four applications open with twenty tabs in Firefox or with just my browser and only two tabs. Along with the sluggishness, the fan starts very loud and to get rid of the slow behavior and loud fan noise (the noise wouldn't bother me, but I associate it with slow, slow problems) I have to flip the lid down and leave it go to sleep. When I return, watching the video is ok for a while, but if I have to pause it to do something else or if I do something other than view light web pages like change tabs, the computer slows again.
It's a Macbook Air 1,1 with a 1.6GHz processor and 2GB of ram. I have 50GB of the 73GB of hard drive space empty.
I recently updated it and left if off for a couple of days, but this hasn't helped.
There are only two applications which open when I log-in also, so I have no idea what the **** the problem could be.
Any ideas, and what could I do to fix it?
Your help is EXTREMELY appreciated by this very frustrated Air owner!
    Thanks,
    Ed.

My first generation Air was sluggish from day one. Part of the problem is overheating, you can see that in the Activity Monitor as process 'kernel_task' taking 150% CPU or more. My fist generation machine crashed a lot, but that was eventually fixed with a firmware update that I suspect made the machine even slower. If I lift my machine up and hold it against a table fan, I can watch the 'kernel_task' CPU % claim down to almost zero.
I suspect another defect with the Air is the disk I/O system. I know the disk is not supposed to be the fastest, but if you have one application that do anything on the disk, everything else slows down to a halt. DMA (direct memory access) was invented 1989 or earlier, so I really don't know why the CPU should stall when some I/O is ongoing. It is so frustrating to watch a CPU load of 20%, have two CPUs, and still have a machine that is so sluggish that it is practically unusable.
I'm a double idiot, because when my first MacBook Air broke (the common hinge problem) I bought a second generation one, thinking that Apple fixed the problems. To be sure I was not the cause, I did a clean install.
Now I sit here tilting my almost new MacBook Air to give free airflow under my machine by my table fan, and still can't really use more than one application at the time, constantly restarting web browsers to be able to scroll pages, exactly the same problems as the first one.....
I have hopes for Snow Leopard fixing part of my problems, the disk I/O problem, but who knows.
I do think I will buy a new copy of CoolBook, the tool that saved me with my first MacBook Air. If underclocking and undervolting, it was kind of usable, could even watch videos!!!
    Apple, please, fix MacBook Air!!!!

    Hi Chalmita,
For your immediate issue of the MacBook Air not shutting down, try the following:
OS X Yosemite: Log out, sleep, restart, and shut down
    https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18786?locale=en_US
Hold down the power button until you see the restart, sleep, or shut down dialog, then click Shut Down, or press Return.
If you don’t want the app windows you currently have open to reopen when you restart your Mac and sign in, deselect “Reopen windows when logging back in.”
If your Mac won’t shut down, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to force a shutdown.
Important:   If you force a shutdown, you may lose unsaved changes in open documents.
The Mac is completely shut down when there is a black screen, no active power light, and no fan or drive noise.
What version of OS X do you have on your Mac?  It might be helpful to back up your computer with Time Machine and update to the latest version, which is 10.0.3.  Do the same with your iPhones so that everything is up to date.

i buy a macbook air with my friend and i changed the apple id also.at first i can update the application but now its impossible to update the application.when i clock to update it shows the id of my fren andsomebody do you have idea to solve this problem.

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted in Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.

I have a problem syncing iCal on my Macbook air (10.7.5) and my iPhone 4s (5.1.1) over iCloud. The following server error message comes up "The request (CalDAVAccountRefreshQueueableOperation) for account “iCloud” failed." Been to Apple Store - no luck instore, or with Super genius over the phone when with genius in store, taking data in real time via ethernet!
I had to do a full wipe of my system because of time machine back up issues 2 weeks ago, and the error has only occured at some point since then. I only did a drag and drop of my user account folders/files into an External HDD rather than a copy of my user account (advised by the staff in store at Apple to do this) and when reimported, the Mail folders are all present but each message is in a sub-sub-sub folder that is numerically named. I do not have a mirror image of the hard disk prior to the wipe, only a time machine back up from 2 weeks prior to it being done. I am uncertain if this reinstall has caused the issue.
I am not happy to upgrade the software in my iPhone until I have the calendars working. I have purchased Mountain Lion, but again am concerned about upgrading until the issues are sorted.
I have tried the other solutions on here with no luck. HELP please.
    Many Thanks.

    Progress Update.
I made a back of what existing phtos and Videos I had on my Iplhone.  I used Image capture to do this making an entire back up of photos and videoa that were still intact on the phone.
Image capture is god for this purpose, as it does exactly what you ask it to do without applying any rules or squishing the files back into iphote (which might also be corupted)
Image capture wil do the basic function of retriving the contents of the phone and save them as native files on your hard drive.
Once I did this I erased my iphone, and re intitialised it restoring an older back up from icloud.
As the retore was happneing - I did retreive the missing files that cuased the intial beviour as above, and I could play the videos that were missing in the above scenerio.  The wierd ting was however that even though the source files were now back on the device, the thumbnail previews were missing. Where I ahd balck thumb nails for server portions of the resotred content.
I then went to bed as the restore is a long process.  When I woke up the library had library had cleaned itself up.  Mysteriously the prcess had deleted the files missing the their thumbnails.
This is very perculiar and bad behavior.
I am now repeating the process, and will attempt to download the missing content as it is restored and prior to the phone trying to fix itself.
    Here are the lessons learned.
DO NOT rely on Photo Stream to keep back ups and synchornise videos from you IOS device. IT DOES NOT SUPPORT THIS CAPBILITY
DO NOT rely on iCloud Back Up alone - always fd an occassional iTunes back up or more reliably still always take a back up of photos and video files using Image Capture to be doubly sure that you a have backd up any content.
DO THIS NOW - dont wait to loose your phone ofr have your phone repaired by replacement at the apple Store.  (I did both :-(
