My MACBOOK Air  shuts down

When I am using my MacBook Air, I will be in the middle of an action when the screen goes back to home and requires me to reinter password. I haven't left the screen or even stopped typing. Is there any way to stop this it will happen 3 or 4 times I am in the middle of something. It can be very annoying.Any suggestions will be helpfu.

I have not tried this - what would be the best way to go about a clean re-install? As I don't think the Air came with a physical CD copy of lion and my Mountain Lion purchase was made through the app store - I had no option when it installed for it to be a clean install, it just worked as an update.

My MacBook Air shuts down when its more than half way charged and won't turn on unless I plug it in to the adapter? Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

If you really do have a Mid 2013 Mac Air model then it is still in warranty, as the standard Apple warranty is one year from date of purchase. So take it into an Apple store and have it diagnosed and fixed under the warranty. There is some type of hardware problem that only Apple can fix.

  • MacBook Air shuts down automatically

My MacBook Air shuts down automatically. It does not start up .
    Any ideas?

Auto shutdowns outside of power feed issue indicates SSD or logic board failure.
Contact Apple for in shop free diagnostics and full evaluation for parts replacement. Avail yourself of the warranty you paid for

  • My macbook air shut down! Help!

My macbook air shut down because of battery level I'm guessing. now the keyboard is still lit up and the charger appears green, yet it won't turn on at all. Help!

Try holding the power key down for 10 seconds and then rebooting.
If that does not work try and SMC Reset.

  • Macbook air shuts down and then keeps restarting on its on after every few minutes

My macbook air shuts down after starting the maching and then keep restarting and shutting down in a loop untill I close the lid.
I had bought this machine last november so have just about completed a year. Please help me identify the issue?

last November is more than a year
How long will it stay on until it restarts itself? logic board or battery failure.
Contact Apple for appt. for full in shop diagnostic and possible repair.

  • My MacBook Air shut down is slower than other macs I have seen

I think this is due to the recent Mac OS 10.8.2 update
My MacBook Air shuts down slower than usual. It will get slow and show a white screen with a spinining wheel taking up to 15 seconds.
This is longer than the startup time.
When it was new, I think it was running Mac OS 10.8.1. Shutdown was super speedy and took maybe just 3 seconds. It then asked me to update, so I obviously did, since I thought new improvments were made.
So how can I get rid of this slow shut down timings?

You might try resetting the SMC. If that does not work, take it in for service (you are under warranty).

  • MacBook Air shuts down when I close it

Whenever I close my MacBook, it shuts down instead of going into sleep mode. At first, I thought it was a problem with my MacBook not waking up from sleep at all, but if I use the Sleep function from the drop down menu, it will wake up normally.
I've looked around the community to see if anyone had a similar issue, but most people say they need to reboot it to start it up again, which isn't my case at all. It just does a typical shut down. How do I make it go to sleep instead of shutting down when I close it?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    bzgrep 'Previous Shutdown' /var/log/system.log*
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • Macbook Air shuts down if it is not plugged into the power outlet through the adapter. What is happening?

    Problem description:
Mid-2013 Macbook Air 13 inch. Shuts down when unplugged from power adapter. It 1st started just shutting down intermittently on battery power. Sometimes when it powers back-up on the battery power only the fan would be blowing hard. But it is now at the point that if it is not connected to the power adapter it will not come on. I have tried resetting SMC and PRAM but to no avail. The battery is showing 100% charge with only 137 battery cycle count.

Tried to reset SMC many times but it didn't change anything. The battery however is no longer being charged by the adapter even the computer is plugged in. The light remains orange. I restored to one of my earlier back-ups on time machine with Mavericks and the iWorm and malware returned. So, I decided to erase the hard drive and restore to original OS. I was able to restore to Yosemite. Here is the result of the latest estrecheck and battery info:

At this point, the computer works fine with the adapter plugged in, light remains orange, the battery is not being charged. I believe the computer will still turn off once I unplugged the adapter from the computer although the battery is supposedly 88% charged.
If this is a hardware problem I hope it's just the battery. I believe that's the next step I have to take. Unless anyone has any other ideas.

Can you help me? Thank you.

    Hi,
I am having the same problem on my Macbook Pro. I only get the issue at home. I use a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter as well as an external thunderbolt display. I actually bought the thunderbolt to ethernet adapter as a replacement for a non-Apple Sitecom USB 3 to ethernet in order to get rid of the random crashes. It did not help! Here is the report:

  • Macbook air Shut down problem

    Hi everyone,
I used to have the shut down problem with my Macbook air. I have an 11" Later 2011 Macbook air.
The problem did not go away after updating to Mountain lion.
I just realized that although I was closing all programs, I was not ejecting my 3G modem/dongle.
Once I ejected it before commanding it to shut down, it did shut down properly.
I thought I should share it with you. May be there is a program that has not been closed or a devise that has not been unplugged/ejected properly and is restricting the shut down.
It worked for me. Hope it will work for you.
    Enjoy your Mac.
    J.

        Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, you may have to take the computer to the Apple store
to have the battery checked out.
         Best,

  • MacBook Air shuts down unexpectedly

MacBook Air (2012) keeps shutting down unexpectedly. And then shuts down during start up several times before it works again.
I was getting an "Error: shrinkdb"  message in console for a while.
I tried reinstalling Yosemite which did nothing. I also tried downgrading to Mavericks which also did nothing.
I've verified/repaired permissions and the disk several times successfully with no change.
I've also got the message "unlink of file /users/***/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/fsCachedData" in console.
Also when repairing permissions I've gotten this message: warning: SUID file "system/library/coreservices/remotemanagement/ardagent.app/contents/macos/ardag ent" has been modified and will not be repaired

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • MacBook Air shuts down

MacBook Air OS 10.7.5 shuts down by itself and will not turn on again for several minutes.

Please try a few basic troubleshooting steps.
What to do if your Mac shuts down randomly
First, try plugging in your Mac to allow the battery to charge. If it is not a portable Apple computer, skip this step. Wait a few minutes, and then try powering on the computer.
    Next, try resetting your SMC.
Resetting the SMC of an Intel-based portable Mac with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: This will not delete any data.
The SMC is responsible for controlling various system functions. None of your data will be deleted by resetting the SMC.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
Release the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
Press the Power Button to turn on the computer.
    Then, try resetting your PRAM.
    Resetting the NVRAM/PRAM
Note: This will not delete any data.
The NVRAM/PRAM stores information such as speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and recent kernel panic information (if any). You should reset the NVRAM/PRAM if you experience issues relating to these functions.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Turn on the computer by pressing the Power Button.
On the built-in keyboard, press and hold the Command (⌘), Option (⌥), P, and R keys before the gray screen appears.
Continue to hold down the keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chime for the second time.
Release the keys on the built-in keyboard.
Then, try repairing the disk using Disk Utility.
Repairing a disk using Disk Utility on the Recovery HD.
Note: This should not delete any information or files from the disk.
Repairing a disk can help solve various file-related issues.
Make sure the computer is powered off before continuing.
Press the Power Button to turn on the computer.
Press and hold both the R and Command (⌘) keys on the keyboard until the Recovery partition loads. If this does not work, shut down the computer, press the Power Button to turn on the computer, and then hold in the Alt (⌥) button immediately after you press the power button. Then, select the Recovery HD partition to boot up in the Recovery HD partition.
    Select Disk Utility.
Once you are in the Disk Utility app, select the drive from the sidebar on the left.
Then, choose the Repair Disk button on the right.
If the Repair Disk button is grey or unavailable, select Verify Disk and then select Repair Disk.
If this does not solve your issues, you may have no choice but to reformat the drive using Disk Utility.
You should also repair your startup disk’s disk permissions as well.
Repairing a disk’s permissions using Disk Utility on the Recovery HD.
Note: This should not delete any information or files from the disk.
Repairing a disk's permissions can help solve various file-related issues.
Then, choose the Repair Disk Permissions button on the right.
If this does not solve your issues, continue on and run Apple Hardware Test.
Using Apple Hardware Test to troubleshoot a hardware problem
Your issues might be caused by a hardware problem. Running Apple Hardware Test can help you solve this problem by showing you the faulty hardware.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
Press the Power Button to turn on the computer.
Press and hold the D key on the keyboard before the grey starting screen appears.
Continue to hold the D key until the loading screen shows up. You should see a globe.
When AHT has loaded, select your Language and then press the Return (↩) key.
Select the Perform Extended Testing checkbox located under the Test button.
Press the T key, select the Test button, or press the Return (↩) key to start running the diagnostics.
Report any issues it shows in a reply.
If Apple Hardware Test does not show any issues, continue on and reinstall OS X.

  • Macbook air shuts down when unplugged

    Hi,
My macbook air is just 2 months old. Since yesterday my laptop shuts down when unplugged. And the time settings changes and I have to reset the time again everytime i switch it on. I tried reseting the system using time machine. Even that didnt work. Please tell me how to solve this.
    Thanks
    Shahzad

    Hi shafi.shahzad,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your new MacBook Air. Based on your description (issues with power management/charging, not retaining time settings, etc), you may want to try resetting your System Management Controller (SMC) and PRAM, as outlined in the following articles:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM
    Regards,
    - Brenden

  • My macbook air shuts down instead of going to sleep.

My MacBook Air running OSX 10.7.5 shuts down rather than going to sleep when left unused for a short period.
I notice this started about 3 or 4 days ago.
It doesn't matter if it is connected to the power supply or running from battery.
I haven't made any changes to system preferences.
    Any Ideas.
It did a similar thing when I first got it and it had to back to Apple to have most of it's innards replaced under warranty.
    Regards,
    Joe

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • MacBook Air shuts down during boot

My Macbook Air (OS X Yosemite - Early 2014) automatically shuts down during boot, with the screen flashes during the loading bar at 40% and then shuts down. I've tried to reboot many times but it wouldn't get past the 40% on the loading bar.
I've also tried the following but none worked:
The Apple Hardware Test shows that "There may be an issue with a memory module." (PPM002, PPM003, PPM004) - though I've checked that the reference code and the definition doesn't match, as "There may be an issue with a memory module." should be PPM001, and PPM002-PPM015 should be "There may be an issue with the onboard memory.". I've sent this message to Apple and they'd only provided the option to visit their retail store.
Also, the Recovery Mode isn't much help either. As do not have a backup of my HD, I'm not able to restore from Time Machine Backup.
So, I've tried to reinstall OS X Yosemite, but it says "Unavailable to install OS X". A website online says that you can resolve this issue by correcting the date through terminal, but the basic menu bar won't appear, in which I'm not able to access Terminal during the Recovery Mode.
Therefore, I've also tried the Disk Utility, which it shows it can't be repaired, with the following messages: Invalid Node Structure (4, 57963), and 2 messages regarding the Invalid Extent Entry (4, 47013) and (4, 40808). The Single User Mode with the command fsck -fy yields the same message.
Is there any other options then to visit the Apple Retail Store?

      Invalid node structure
I'm pretty sure you need more then Disk Utility to repair the drive.

  • Why is macbook Air shutting down after lid is closed for around 5 minutes or more?

Just puchased refurbed MacBiik Air i7 256 gb.
When closing lid for extended time computer shuts down and need to restart using power button.
Ive been testing for 10 minutes. Will wake up if lid is closed for shorter duration.

Your MBA is going into deep sleep. When you restart, the MBA is loading the sleep image and not doing a complete reboot. When you MBA wakes up, how much battery charge do you have remaining.
Deep sleep is enabled if your battery is draining or near empty.
SmartSleep allows you to set the threshold of battery charge remaining, let's say 20%, when your MacBook will write the contents of memory to disk.
