My Macbook disc drive is spinning discs then spitting them out - any kind too - CDs, DVDs, and blanks.

From the sound of it the whole thing might be broken.  I've tried resetting the PRAM, doing a full disk repair through disk utility, and testing all sorts of varieties of discs in the slot.  It will accept them, spin them for a bit, then spit them out without ever recognizing them on the screen.  I don't know how long this has been an issue, as the last time I used the drive was in March to play a DVD.  It worked fine at that point.  Is it totally shot? And if so, is there a cheap external version I can use that will work with my laptop?  I'm out of warranty and can't afford to cough up for a new one from Apple.

All over the internet, you can also pick them up in any electronics store or electronics section of a store (wal-mart for example).

  • My Mac won't read discs. Spits them out within seconds.

Why would it just stop working? We hardly ever use it. It won't even take the Mac discs. Help!!

Ok, I have already done all of these steps and nothing has helped!  Here's my related problem, any suggestions?
My iMac won't even burn a single disc!  Everytime I insert a blank disc it spits it out telling me it's not blank and won't burn onto it.  I know the CDs are blank.  I tried 10 from a brand new stack!  I finally sent the playlist to my husband's PC (he has iTunes loaded) and he burned the CD fine using the same blank discs that my iMac kept spitting out.
Today I tried to play a music CD.  It spit it out in seconds of me putting it in.  I can play it on my DVD player, my husband's computer, my entertainment center, my car CD player but not my iMac  No explanation, just wouldn't accept the CD.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON BUT IT'S VERY IRRITATING!!!
On top of all of this, when I upgraded my Apple Operating System the ChromCast program I was successfully using before stopped working giving me a Green Screen of Death.
    APPLE!!  ***!!!
Could really use some guildance here...starting to really give up on Apple...way too many problems with too many different items and no solution when my husband's PC is doing just fine!

  • My iMac G5 also won't burn or even accept discs, keeps spitting them out

It first stopped burning discs, and today it started throwing the DVDs and CDs back out.
When I originally called up within warranty (it ended at the end of last month), I was told something could be done as an exception (they apparently can't pick up my machine, as I don't have the expensive Applecare - why should I have to when I just want a system that works?).
I called back up when the department I needed was open, and told bluntly that nothing could be done, as did the next person I asked. Now I have a faulty computer, and my only choice is to find someway to get to Leighton Buzzard (an hour away in the car for me, I don't own a car as I bought this machine instead, a big mistake, it turns out).
My choices? Get to a repair centre, and that's it. I can't do that, how am I expected to lug an iMac G5 there on my own? One of my friends has a car but it would take time out of his and my days to get there and I doubt he'd be willing to go that far - plus I'm pretty broke, so can't afford to pay him much for the petrol (I'm a student at University trying to make ends meet).
By law, products such as these can reasonably be expected to last for upto six years, yet this didn't manage one. It was under warranty when I contacted you/Apple, and yet I'm treated as a second-rate customer because I didn't choose to take out an expensive warranty package on an item that's worth about two times the value of it. I've searched for replacement drives so I can fit one myself then bill Apple, but to no avail.
This service was offered in the past, and I know of people on forums that have had their iMacs fixed through the post before, why not me? Why isn't there a repair centre in Northampton?

Adamo which model G5 iMac do you have?
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301724#301724 How to identify your iMac
Depending on your model G5 there may be a solution. See the following links specifically the last one:
SuperDrive Spits dvd's off the desk
    CD drive spits out cds
    CD falls out
If you decide to contact Apple again ask "politely" but firmly to be put through to "Customer Relations". Customor Relations has more authority over Customor Service Techs.
As for the distance of repair shops, suggest that you check out User Groups: United Kingdom to see if they can help you in finding an AASP closer to you.
    Good Luck!

    Try the following:
In Finder, select the problematic volume and then press command-I.
Expand the Sharing & permissions section if it's collapsed.
If the section is locked, then unlock it by pressing the padlock button and then authenticating as directed.
Tick/check Ignore ownership on this volume.

Boot off your *original* Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD. Some have it on the Disc #2.
The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem.

  • I'm trying to install OS 10.6 onto my Macbook, which currently has OS 10.5.8. I clicked install (on the DVD) and selected my Macintosh HD drive. I was given the message that that disk cannot be used because it does not have the GUID partition????

I'm trying to install OS 10.6 onto my Macbook, which currently has OS 10.5.8. I clicked install (on the DVD) and selected my Macintosh HD drive. I was given the message that that disk cannot be used because it does not have the GUID partition. In order to have a GUID partition, it suggested I go to disk utility and make the change. I couldn't see the partition tabs in the disk utility application. So how do I accomplish the GUID partition?

The problem is, reformatting the partition may require you erase the hard drive.   Normally Intel Macs are preformatted GUID.    The fact that yours is not, says someone who initially installed the system on your Mac did you a disservice.   Regardless, you should backup your data before you upgrade.  GUID formatted drives generally are not compatible with iBooks (pre-2006 consumer notebooks by Apple) Powerbooks, and PowerMacs, and iMac G5s.    So if you indeed have machine with the MacBook name on the screen frame, it was not properly formatted from the beginning.

  • Workflow for marking clips and then exporting them out as individual clips with audio?

    Hello,
I'm just starting to use Prelude.  I recorded an interview for my daughter for a school project last week.  The interview went well, but I want to mark as "sub-clips" all of the video interview's question/answer combos (e.g. "What is your name?  My name is John Doe.") and then save them out to individual clips rather than have to manage the full size files (about 40GB in all from my Panasonic GH3, 50mbps, IPB MOV) with clip markers.  I'll keep the originals as backups, but would really rather work with the individual clip files.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!  I would think this would be a very simple and common function.  Basically, just dividing up the original video into multiple, standalone video clips with the same bit-rate, encoding, etc., but with new headers/EOF markers.  Just chopping the original files up into chunks with no changes or reencoding necessary.  If I can do it the way I imagine it, it should be a very quick process, at least compared to transcoding the files.
    Best regards,
    Scott

    Hi -
Meg The Dog's suggestion will work if you don't intend to bring in all of your media off the card.  The Partial Ingest method will allow you to selectively create subclips during ingest and not transfer the full original clips.
However, you do state you plan to keep all your media - not just the parts you want to subclip. So here's my suggestion for the workflow:
    1. Ingest all your media from your cameras (the entire clips - not the partial clip method)
    2. Open each clip from the Prelude Project Panel and create your Subclip Markers using Prelude logging tools.
    3. In the Project Panel you will find new entries will appear for each SUBCLIP Marker you add to your master clips.
    4. You can organize you subclips into BINS as needed to keep track of the segments of your video
    5. When you're ready to create your timeline of subclips you can either
5a. EXPORT all the SUBCLIPS into their own files (select all subclips you want to export and use the FILE->EXPORT->MEDIA menu command)
       or
5b. Drag-Drop your subclips into a ROUGHCUT in Prelude to order your story. Then use the SEND TO PREMIERE PRO feature to send the Rough Cut into Premiere pro where you can finish your edit. All the media will come along for the ride into Premiere Pro (including your Subclips). You can then add titles and any effects easily enough in Premiere Pro).
There are some other options here you can also try out which might be interesting. For example, you can add transitions and any additional audio tracks to your ROUGH CUT directly in Prelude and then EXPORT the Rough Cut as a final movie - and not need to move to Premiere Pro unless you have wider editing needs.
    Hope this helps!
    Regards,
    Michael

When Microsoft decided not to support Windows Media any more, they made Flip4Mac available for free. If you have not taken advantage of that free download, this might be a good time.
It may not completely solve the problem, but your Mac will play more with the free player. No need to pay for the Upgrades.

  • My macbook does not have a firewire port. Is there any kind of adapter that will allow me to use my advc 300 (which need to plug in to the FireWire port)?

My macbook does not have a firewire port. Is there any kind of adapter that will allow me to use my advc 300 (which need to plug in to the FireWire port)?

Firewire, USB and the recent thunderbolt use completely different protocols, therefore there are no adapters for mutually adapting them, just a computer, which allows connecting them, and will work as an interface. For example, if you have an external disk in an enclosure with only FW connection and another one with USB connection, just your mac, having both, allows their interconnectivity.
If your mac does not have FW (the brief alu MB series, Air) you cannot connect a FW device, if only FW port is there.

Hi I am having the identical problem with my 24" intel iMac 2007..... Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I'm on round 3 now and with a completely blank grey screen and it won't start up from the disk 1.. I also have diskwarrior and techtool pro as well as the osx leopard and snow leopard disk... The HD is new.. Replaced by apple 3 months ago.. Don't know the cause the first time this happened about 9 months ago.. 2nd time, 6 months ago it never rebooted from the office for mac 2008 critical update... Did a clean install after backing up to TC... Took it to apple replaced HD even though it appeared ok, they checked all hardware and I ran techtool pro daily ever since. Last week software update had several updates avail. Office for mac being one of them.. I updated and have never booted since.. . I swear to never ever use another Microsoft product as long as I live if I can just fix this once more... Help me please

  • Imac Superdrive not recognizing inserted media, runs disc for a minute then spits it out.

2009 intel 24 inch Intel Imac either does not recognize cd or dvd I put in it and spits it out after spinning it around for a minute, or it swallows disc and I have to force shut down to get disc out. Other times it is able to read disc. Any ideas?

If the drive lenses have never been cleaned since you purchased your iMac, you may need to run the cleaning cycle more than once. Did you run the cleaning disc more than once?
If the problem is lessening, that means it still could be some dust on the lenses.
Also, look at the backs of the CD/DVDs to see if there are lots of scratches on the writing surface.
If there are, it may not be just the drive, but the discs, too!
I don't know about auto polishes for cleaning CD/DVDs, but they make consumer cleaners and polishes specifically to minimize, clear up most minor scratching on DVDs or CDs.
These are available in places that sell electronics and can be found online.
Maybe you need to try these ideas, first, before investing in a new drive.
Because if the CD/DVDs have surface scratches or imperfections that prevent it from being read or written too, this will still happen with the new external drive.
Trybthese ideas one more time, if still no joy, time to purchase an external FireWire CD/DVD writer.
    Good Luck!

  • How do I access files that I put in iCloud Drive on my iMac and MacBook Pro, and then access them with ANY iOS device?

For example, I put some .pdf documents into iCloud Drive. Now I need those files but I'm not home any more----I have an iPhone and iPad at my disposal. They are ALL signed into the same iCloud account and they are all on the same WiFi network. Those .pdf documents that I so easily dropped into iCloud Drive earlier appear to be non-existant on my iOS devices. I do see my "Pages" memos here in iCloud, but the other things I have put in, I can't find. The ONLY way so far that I have been able to locate them is to go back to my iMac or MBP and use a Finder window and i have direct access to iCloud Drive there. Are they purposely not allowing us to pick up all files on all devices? Or am I missing something? Thanks.

First, to access documents you must use an app designed for that specific Document type. So Pages will not be able to open PDFs. The Documents app by Readdle can handle PDFs though. In the latter case, you'd open the app, click the menu icon at its top left, and click Open to go to your iCloud Drive. With Pages, if you had files outside the main Pages folder, click + then iCloud and navigate to the file's location.
