My macbook does not start, gray screen, apple and turning gear appears

my macbook froze. then shut down the computer to clear the freeze condition. when trying to restart, the computer starts to boot, the apple appears on the screen, the gear rotates, however the computer does not continue to boot. can anyone help?

That would normally indicate a problem with the Hard Drive.
Do you have an Instal Disc to try to boot from? Hold the Mouse button down when powering up & eject if there's a Disc in it now.

    Reinstall OS X:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • My MacBook does not start

My MacBook does not start up. I do not get further than the apple logo and spinning wheel

You could try the processes described in the following Support article to test and troubleshoot the computer, before applying the SMC reset section here...
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
This covers several items, including SafeBoot and others, that could help resolve the problem; including the reset notion itself. When you troubleshoot, not all items are necessary; stop at the first one that works. If none of them work, try them again. Maybe up to three times.
If you have the OS X install disc DVD, you may need to use it at some point, in troubleshooting or repair; since there also may be a problem with the hard disk drive or system startup files on it. The booted OS X install disc allows one to use OS X utilities, such as Disk Utility, to attempt repair; not limited to installations, the utility can attempt a repair on an unmounted system disk drive, thus booting Mac from the DVD.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Macbook does not start

    Greetings. This is my issue:
I don't know why the macbook does not restart, if you try to restart it, it comes to black screen and i had to press the power button twice (Turn it absolutely off and turn it up), i took it to an apple authorized service center and he put an external HDD and restart it from this HDD then restart my macbook and it restarted normally, a few days later the problem persist.
Now the big deal: I turned it on, open safari and immediately it comes black screen and the status white led start blinking, i press the power button and stop blinking and press it again but it does not start, the blinking comes again... I left it off for an hour or so.
One hour later it boots normally but in few seconds it freezes and becomes a message in the screen that reads: " You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button". Then i press the power button, when i tried to restart it again there came a lot of strange stripes in the screen, gray and black with some color dots, a very weird thing, the "Start up chime" sounds about tree times and the stripes keep changing, always stripes. I restart it again, and the same thing happens one more time, and the third time i restart it it does not show anything on screen, all black and no sound, i tried putting out battery and everything Apple says to do when macbook does not boot, but nothing happens... i press the power button the sound of the HDD (I guess) that always sound, i can hear it, and the status white led is on, but not blinking, but nothing else....
    what should it be?
it is a late 2007 macbook and out of warranty, does not have apple care.

  • My new MacBook does not start

My MacBook will not start, I am getting a gray or light blue screen and nothing happens.
Apparently this has a tendency to happen when the ITunes and Photo Booth are open within one session before I shut down the computer.
So far every time that I start the computer I have to press and hold the (control alt P R) keys, then the laptop starts and I get the apple in the screen and the rotating gear.
    Please advice what to do?
I should point out that if I open other programs in a session and then shut down the computer, it does start normally when I restart.

The 4 times chimes is my old habit since os 7.5.3 sorry if that sound amusing to you, on apple sites 2 times is enough.
It will be the last option to do the re-installation.
But it usually help better, and you can narrow down the problem to other factor since the OS X is well installed and fresh.
I prefer install for the first time method, but you can choose archieve and install if you want to save your data there. Any method you choose make sure you back up your data before doing so.
But do you have a good connection in Thai, since I suggest you to update all the updater after you done the installation process.
    Good Luck

  • My new macbook pro (Mountain Lion) will not log into my 1and1 server to connect to my e mail. My snow leopard macbook does not have this problem - Apple support say it is a 1and1 problem! do I have to wait for an update of Mountain Lion?

My new macbook pro (Mountain Lion 10.8.1) will not log into my 1and1 outgoing mail server. ( It will receive mail - but does not send)My old Snow Leopard macbook does not have the same problem ( server settings etc. are identical) . Apple Support say its a 1and1 problem , 1and1 say it is an operating System prob - I have tried changing port numbers.

My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
    or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook does not start-how do I backup?

My Macbook is not starting properly - displays a gray screen with logo only. I have the MacOs installer ready to go into Disk Utility, Erase and then somehow install OS again.... I would like to know how can I make a backup of my files prior to erasing, since I cannot see my files anymore... any suggestions? Thanks!

What I have done in this situation is to plug in an external hard drive, and run the Mac install disk. Install Mac OSX on the external one. Then boot up from the external drive by holding down the option key at startup.
If you can't mount the internal hard drive, or see it on the desktop, you're out of luck. Probably a hardware issue. You could look into a more professional repair utility, or just bring it to a servicer.
However, if you can see the hard drive on your desktop, you can move on. Now we can make a clone of the internal hard drive. Go into Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/), and navigate to your boot drive (external). Go to the tab labeled "Partition". Add a new partition, and name it. This will be your backup partition. After you have done this, you should see an extra icon on the desktop. If not, troubleshoot "adding a partition."
Now we can make the backup. You can use free software such as SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy. Personally I use SuperDuper, and I will explain it with that software. Open it, and make sure you copy your internal hard drive (usually Macintosh HD), to the backup partition you just made. Now backup all files.
After this is complete you should have a bootable copy of your internal hard drive on your external hard drive. Try booting it up with by holding down the option key like before. From here, there are several courses of action.
    1. You can attempt to use SuperDuper to copy the backup back to your internal hard drive. This works sometimes, but your internal hard drive will have to be in good condition. I reccomend trying it though.
    2. Try reinstalling Mac OSX on the internal hard drive, holding option at startup and selecting the disk. There should be an option in the install process to import files and settings from another computer. Don't worry if you miss it though, because you can always do this from Migration Assistant (/Applications/Utilities/).
    3. If neither of the above options, either try going to the genius bar, or getting a new internal hard drive. (A new computer works too .) If you opt for a new computer or hard drive, try importing from your backup on the external hard drive with step 2.
I have done this several time by attempting to dual boot Ubuntu. Good luck!!

If you bought your RAM at a place that also sells PC RAM you may have gotten mislabelled RAM. PCs can handle different RAM speeds so they’ll often label higher speed RAM as a lower speed rather than make two different speeds of RAM. But Macs are much more picky. They require a RAM stick to be exactly 667mhz not 675mhz or 800mhz. The way to tell is to put one of your old RAM sticks in and it will force the new RAM to run at the correct speed.
This is from one review of PNY RAM:
"These modules are actually 800Mhz. PNY no longer makes or sells 667Mhz modules. Not all computers that require 667Mhz are compatible with 2 800Mhz modules. They refuse to down clock properly. This is especially true with a number of Core 2 Duo MacBooks. Spoke to PNY support, they flat out told me that yes, they sell 800Mhz modules in 667Mhz packaging. If you RMA a module that is 667Mhz (or supposed to be 667Mhz) they will replace it with an 800Mhz module as they no longer have any 667Mhz SODIMMs, not even for RMA replacement!"

  • Macbook does not start anymore after upgrade to Snow Leopard

I successfully upgraded my MacbookAir to Snow Leopard, but my son's Macbook refuses to start after having been upgraded.
    Please help!

    Hello,
my MacBook Pro (late 2008 unibody) just needs a main logicboard replacement, fortunatly still within warrenty, after updating to 10.6.0. I experienced the following: With an update from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7 the MBP freezed within 10min. after reboot, with every restart it freezed after a shorter period and finally freezed during the boot process. I've mounted the MBP as an external HD to my iMac, did an backup and deleted the internal MBP harddrive by overwriting it with zeros. I did the usual procedure of resetting SMC, P/V-RAM and reinstalled 10.5.6 - everything was fine again!
When Snow Leopard came out, I updated again, hoping the issue has been repaired. BUT I experienced the same problems and with some system permission deleting I got SL running as long as I did not turn on AirPort. As soon airport is activated and an internet connection is established I could count the seconds until the mac freezes. And it will only come up again by deleting the system configuration preferences (via single user mode booting).
Thereafter I was sure there is a hardware problem with the airport card or the logic board. The Apple Service Provider did not find any hardware failure and finally will change the logic board. Hopefully I got the Mac back next Tuesday. I let you know about the results.
    Best regards!
PS: Obviously software could damage hardware or some hardware components used by Apple are not compatible with some of their software.

  • MacBook does not open, display is clear and the apple fure can be seen.

Is there any way to restart macbook? I can only see the black apple and the rotary symbol!

NO - not correct.  Even if you are still using iWeb 08, you can still publish to another host and not MobileMe.  You do this by selecting the option 'Publish to a local folder" and this will publish the site to your desktop and you can then use an ftp programme such as Cyberduck to upload your site to your host.
MobileMe will not be here after the end of June, so you will have to find alternative hosting.  They are not taking any new subscriptions.
On new Macs, iLife 11 is pre-installed, but only iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand are included, not iWeb and iDVD. The Apple Online store is not selling the boxed version of iLife 11 any longer, so if you want to upgrade to iLife, then you'll have to look online at Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk for a boxed set of either iLife 09 or iLife 11.  Both contains iWeb 09, which is what you would want.

  • My new apple tv does not start after showing apple logo in LG Tv

I have got new atv3 and hooked it to hdmi port 3 on my LG tv
After displaying logo ao apple it shows no signal
I had also tried to restore software of apple tv but still problem remains.
Please help me what to do ?
    Thanks

I would test with another tv it could be that the lg does not support the resolution the appletv is trying to send
with the other tv for testing one could then try changing the reslotion and test with the LG again
