My MacBook doesn't connect to my network, in one part of my room.

This is really strange.
I have a black macbook (4,1) running Lion 10.7.2.
It refuses to connect to my home wifi in a small area in my room; which happens to be where my desk is.
It's not the router, every other device is fine; I even have an XBox 360 a foot away from my macbook, and it's connecting fine to the network.
I am forced to go to the centre of the room, just to use the internet sometimes.
I've been working since October with my desk and router in the same positions and it's only been affecting me for the passed week or two.
It's not like I'm out of range, my macbook is right above the router (which is downstairs), and a bit to the right (from my working perspective). As I have previously noted, my XBox, which is a foot away, is connecting with no issues.
Is there something in the last update which may have caused this? Is it just wear-and-tear on an 'old' wireless transmitter/receiver? Could there be some form of interferience being generated by other devices?
Any help on the matter would be much appriated — it is very inconvieniant (to say the least) to have to come to the middle of my room to re-connect, and hope that the signal will continue (which it occationally does) when I go back to my desk; and when it doesn't; having to work in the centre of my room/ on my bed.
I look forward to any helpful comments
Thank You
Matt Parnell

It's a shame no one has an idea about this.
Since the post, I have discovered that the issue is due to my secondary monitor — somehow.
When the monitor isn't connected, webpages load quickly and normally; when it is connected this issue occurs often. I have just tested this by loading a page [which loaded fine], reconnecting the monitor, loading the same page from fresh [it got stuck], disconnected a reloaded the page from fresh [which loaded fine].
I tried this a couple times, which seems to suggest that connecting my secondary monitor affects my internet connection.
Any thoughts on the problem?

  • Does anyone know how to connect to wireless internet using a Hitron CVE-30360 cable modem. My Macbook doesn't even see the network?

I just received my cable modem from Hitron and I am unable to connect to it. My phone and other computers and see it as a wireless network but my Macbook doesn't even show it a network that I can connect to. It is totally invisible to my Macbook. Can anyone help with this?

Assuming "BellSouth" uses the same procedure as "SBCGlobal", which are now both ATT/Yahoo, as far as I know:
Take router from box. Connect to power outlet and phone outlet.
Take Ethernet cable, plug one end into the router's jack marked LAN, plug other end into your computer's Ethernet jack.
Point your Web browser to 192.168.1.1 (enter this into your browser's address bar, actual address might vary, check your router's documentation.)
A Web form will appear. Set router to PPPoE, if necessary. Enter the user name your ISP gave you. Enter the password.
Watch all the lights on your router go green.
Or, if the router is already set up, since you used it with your Dell laptop previously:
Take Ethernet cable, plug one end into the router's jack marked LAN, plug other end into your computer's Ethernet jack. Done.
The second from the left is your Ethernet jack:

  • New Macbook Pro. wont connect to wireless network once it has had a update

    hi
bought a new macbook pro last week, when you first start it up it connects fine to a wireless network, but once the software update is compltete it says that there is an error trying to jion network. there is already a powerbook g4 connected to the network and a pc. i have re installed tiger and it can connect fine until the software update has restarted the mac and the same error is back again. do i re install it again and never update it or is there a simple way to correct the fault

My girlfriends New Macbook Pro is doing the same thing. I does connect to non-secure wireless connections such as at the airport but doesn't connect to her home wireless connection that is run by an SBC DSL 2WIRE gateway. I can connect fine on her old IBM laptop that I am on right now through this network wirelessly.
There has to be a fix for this?

  • New Macbook won't connect to existing network

    Hi there,
I've just got my new macbook, and it won't connect to my wireless network. It comes up with an error message saying it cannot connect to the network. There's no hint of what the problem is. I have another laptop which connects to the network fine. Is it a password issue? And if so where do I go to change the relevant Airport settings?
    Thanks
    J

The System Preference, Network, is where you change these things. However, it will only ask for a password when you try to connect, and it needs one. If it didn't ask, the network doesn't have a password. If you tried to enter one before, you can try deleting the Keychain that holds the wireless password. Open Keychain Access from the Utilities folder. Look for your network name in the list of items and delete the one with that name. If you have more than one, that may be the issue. Just delete them and start over trying to connect. Otherwise...
We need to know more about the wireless network. Open, WEP, WPA? Type of router? What are the router settings?
What are the MacBook settings for the Airport Network settings? Is it set to join automatic or preferred networks. Try adding your network as a preferred network and try that.
The following are things that may work. Sometimes preference files prevent things like this, even on a new MacBook.
There is also a preference file, /Library/Preferences/System Configuration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist that controls some of the global Airport items. Try moving it to the desktop and then open system preferences and re-configure the network settings. Also there is preferences.plist. It has all of your network configurations and locations. If you move it, you'll have to add all of your network interfaces back into the Network Port Configurations and any Network Locations you may have made.
You can always move them back if it doesn't help, but you'll have to overwrite the new ones that were created. You must be an admin user to do this.

  • Airport doesn't connect and corrupts network.

    Hello,
This problem first started happening about 2 months ago. When I turn my macbook on and try to connect to my network, it connects but doesn't have an internet connection. After that it will corrupt the wireless and everything connected to the network is disconnected. This is fixed by resetting the router.
Before it was giving me an error that there was an IP conflict with another computer. So i manually changed it, but the problem persists.
    Thank you,
    Tom

Post a complete description of your system and we may be able to help.
What sort of internet connection is it, DSL modem make model other, what sort of wireless system, AirPort Base Station model, how are your network components connected etc.

  • Airport doesn´t connect automatically to Network with Zyxel

I am the proud owner of a new iMac Intel core duo 2,83Ghz since last wendsday. When I start the computer, Airport doesn´t connect automatically to my Home Network!! I checked all the settings - even them on the Router - severell times!! I use a Zyxell P-335WT Router. Fact is that allready had a Intel core duo based iMac. The automatically connection worked without any problem!!
Yesterday i phoned 1,5 hours with apple support - they couldn´t find the problem.
Has anybody an idea?? Last option is to put a new firmware on the router, and make new settings.

Same thing here. I have a belkin f5d7230 router. Wirelessly, my pc connects and stays connected, my old G4 with a reaktek wireless card connects and stays connected, and my new macbook pro connects and stays connected.
On my new iMac (purchased 3 weeks ago) airport extreme connects at start up and stays connected until the computer goes in a low power state or the screen saver goes on. then the connection drops. I have to click the little wireless "fan" graphic in the bar and select my network to connect again. This is CLEARLY an issue with this computer PERIOD. Apple needs to fix it one way or another preferably with a firmware update or something... I'm not interested in dragging this down to the apple store to have it sit there for a week.

  • XP Pro on MacBook Pro Cannot Connect to AirPort Network

I just installed Windows XP using the Boot Camp set up utility. After I installed Windows, I went to set up a wireless network and went through the full process of setting it up. Since I've done that several times, XP Pro on my MacBook will not connect to my AirPort network. I have an airport network on one end of the house and on the other end, I have an airport express to increase the signal.
    Any ideas?

I feel your pain! I can tell you how to get into a protected net ... just not how to STAY connected for any appreciable time! Haven't figured that one out!
Go to your wireless connection icon ... bottom rhs of tool bar (XP)
    - 2x click that icon ... that'll bring up your connection
    - Highlight your connection
    - Select the "Change Advanced settings"... lower lhs of screen
    - When the next window pops-up, select the "Wireless Networks " tab
    - The next window should display your connection ... if not highlight it
    - Select properties
    - In this window you should select:
    - Shared for Network Auth
    - Select WEP for Data Encrypt
    - Input your Network Key (You can get this off your Airport Admin Utility by bringing up the Airport and selecting the "Lock" icon that's named "Password". Select password and it'll give you the hexadecimal equivalent. Input that into your Network Key window and authenticate.
    - Select OK and you should be good for about 5 mins!

  • My Macbook refuses to connect to a network ...

I have my late 2013 Macbook Pro since March. I was able to connect to 3 different networks at home  without a problem from almost any place for 4 months. Suddenly, I could not connect to any network after "sleep". I solved it partially doing what was recommend in this case: SMC Reset, Set Service Order, Delete "SystemConfiguration" Folder, Turn Off Bluetooth, Disable Keychain Sync, etc. I said partially successful because I could not connect to a particular network (Network6) from a particular point (Point6) even if I did it flawlessly every day for 4 months and other devices (Dell laptop, iPad and iPhone) DO connect to that network at that point.
I can connect to that network from other places, but not in that Point6, where I usually work.
Setup: I have a Linksys WRT54GL Router (Network1) with a Hawking Technologies HiGain 300N Range Extender (Network6), both firmwares up to date. Poin 6 is less than 2 meters away from the Range Extender and I never had any issue there. Now, sometimes I cannot see that network, or if I see it I cannot connect, or if I can connect there is no internet access, even if there is an acceptable good signal, signal to noise ratio and low interference. Also, from that Point 6 I can connect to Network 3 that is more than 35 meters away and other devices can connect to Network6. I had reset the Range Extender 6 times and nothing. I have analized my home with Netspot Pro and there is very good Signal to Noise Ratio in Point6, very low noise and no interference with my neighbors networks because they have different channels: I am the only one who uses channel 6, they use 1,2 or 11.
So far I have concluded that:
    1) It is not a hardware problem because my Mac does connect to other networks and to Network 6 from other places but not from Point6 where it connected every day many hours for 4 months. (I am writing this connected to Network 6 in the basement and the Range Extender is in the floor above me; very good STN Ratio).
    2) It is not the Range Extender or Network 6 because I can connect to Network 6 from many other places farther away and because other devices connect to Network 6 in Point 6.
    3) It is not Noise or Interference in Point6 because a) Netspot detects the same acceptable level of noise everywhere, b) No interference from neighbors networks in that place (I am the only one in channel 6) and c) Other devices connect to Network 6 in Point6.
As I wrote, I have deleted the SystemConfiguration folder many times but nothing. It does not connect to Network 6 in Point6.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks Mario. I read those 2 articles before writing my post.
As I wrote before, I could easily fix the "wifi not connecting after sleep" issue with the SMC reset and deleting the SystemConfiguration file. But I could not fix the stubborn "no wifi at point6"  described in my post.
This morning, I decided, contrary to common sense, to just change the channel of the router default of 6 to channel 1. I also changed the channel of the Range Extender from 6 to 1. I said contrary to common sense, because 5 of my neighbors routers are in channel 1, the others are in channel 11 and I was the only one in channel 6, to reduce interference.
Big surprise! I recovered the wifi access in Point 6 and everywhere around the house where I had low signal and Signal to noise ratio. Remember that I measured the noise and interference with Netspot and they were more than acceptable in Point6. Later, I will measure them again with Netspot to see if there is any difference.
Maybe somebody in this forum can explain to me how I did not have any problem for 4 months in channel 6 and suddenly being unable to get wifi in that point without any change in noise or interference, but being able to get wifi with channel 1, the most popular channel in my neighborhood and the one with the highest interference.  There is a good article about this in     Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Potential sources of wireless interference
Anyway, thanks for your help and I am glad I finally got my wifi at point 6.

  • MacBook Pro Retina stopped detecting wifi network in one location.

Hey everyone, experiencing kind of a weird problem and was hoping someone would be able to help.   I was doing some studying at a Starbucks, connected to their WiFi network when randomly my computer lost connection to their network and was no longer able to detect that it even exists. I was worried this was some sort of problem with my wifi card as it could no longer detect any networks nearby, where as before it was detecting multiple networks in the area of the Starbucks. Oddly i was still able to connect to the network on both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. Upon returning home I was relieved to find that I was still able to connect to my home wifi network. Since then i've been to many locations with my laptop but not once had an issue connecting to or detecting wifi networks, with the exception being at that Starbucks location. I've returned many times hoping that the problem would somehow fix itself, and that maybe it was just a problem with their network, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It seems to be that for whatever reason something happened to the MacBook pro while I was at that Starbucks location that has caused it to no longer detect the wifi networks there, and only there.  One possibility could be the I updated Mountain Lion to the 10.8.2 supplemental update while there, but I don't see how that would cause the problem. If anyone has any ideas as to a solution that would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

I considered the network hog point, but I don't believe that I was using any excessive amounts of bandwidth. Also, because I can no longer detect any networks at the Starbucks location (not just the Starbucks network) I don't believe that this is the problem. Also, when I updated the operating system I was sure to disconnect from wifi first, I had already downloaded the update on my home network, just had yet to restart to install it, so my security shouldn't have been an issue either.  How exactly can I go about masking my MAC address so I could double check to see if it was the network issue?
Oh, also, I booted into Windows 7 via boot camp and for some reason Windows is also unable to detect any networks while at Starbucks as well, which is even more confusing.  I don't know if it's worth mentioning, but I bought this MacBook pro retina in Canada and am now in There UK for school. I've heard that north American macs don't play well with one of the network channels that is commonly used over here, so that also may play a role in all of this. But considering that I was able to consistently use their wifi for a couple weeks with no issue, I don't see how that could be the problem. As far as WEP encrypted goes, the network is unsecured so I don't believe that's the problem.
Thanks for the response, I appreciably appreciate it!

  • Macbook Pro Doesn't connect to Wireless network automatically

I just enabled WPA encryption on my router and now my macbook won't automatically connect to my router. I have to select my router in the wireless menu and then it joins. I don't have to type in my encryption key, I have my key stored in my keychain. Before I enabled encryption my macbook connected just fine. I'm have 10.4.11 and a D-Link DIR-655 router.

Could be a corrupt preference file. Not sure which one is relevent here. It may just come under the general Finder prefs. Have a look in User>Library>Preferences for anything wireless related. If nothing shows, try dragging com.apple.finder.plist to the desktop, then either relaunch the Finder or log out and back in. If no change just put it back and choose 'replace' when asked. If you find something more appropriate try that too. Not at a Mac right now otherwise I'd be a little more helpful.

  • Brand new macbook pro cannot connect to wireless networks

The first time I called apple tech, they thought it was a problem with my internet provider. I've called 4 times now, and I'm still getting the runaround.
I have an old (2001) G4 sitting right next to my macbook pro which can see numerous wireless networks and connect to them all. A strong connection at that. However, my brand new (refurbished) Macbook Pro Intel etc,.... supposedly best computer ever made, . . . . can see the same wireless networks but has never been able to connect. As a student, I saved for a year to buy this notebook so I could work at cafe's & study with my friends. My friends with PC's can all connect to these wireless networks. My friends with older, less expensive notebooks can connect no problem. I have never been able to connect. Bought this peice of junk 2 1/2 months ago - only because I didn't want to be stuck at home anymore with my desktop. Stupid me to trust apple.
I wish I could get my $ back, but I'm now being told that it's 30 days too late. Before they told me it was a minor thing and some software update could fix it. I did as told. downloaded and installed their 10.4.8 thingy - deleted all the keychain stuff - nothing. same peice of junk.
Now they are telling me to go back to the genius bar where folks are just rude to me and tell me they can't help me becuase I bought a "refurbished" model that didn't even save me $25. What do you know.
Anyone having problems like this? Anyone out there who can help me?

    Okay,
I apologie for calling it a peice of junk. I know you all probably worship this machine. I'm just really frustrated. I noticed that this is a very common problem - though most of the posts identical to mine have dissapeared from apple.com - this well known defect is all over other discussion boards and websites like macdefect, etc,....
So, can any of you tech gods help me with this very well known, common problem that I haven't been able to fix with 10.4.8 upgrade?
Thanks for your time and assistance,
    -mcgrafx

  • MacBook fails to connect to wireless network after sleep mode

My MacBook fails to reconnect to my wireless network after waking up.
After turning on my MacBook it establishes a decent connection to whatever wireless network I choose (mostly at home). When I close the lid and open it again the network connection is lost and is only reestablished after reboot.
Hopefully someone has a solution as this is very annoying.

Instead of a reboot go to your Wireless Menu icon and select "Turn Airport Off".
Wait a second and "Turn Airport On."
For me this has been a problem for about 2 years. This is much faster than a reboot!

    It's the same issue.

  • Macbook just stopped connecting to wireless network all of a sudden

    Hi,
I was using my macbook on the internet this  morning with no problem.
I then put it to sleep for a couple of hours by closing the lid.
Since then it is no longer connecting to my wireless network.
Message "None of your preferred networks are available".
It keeps prompting me for a password, when I select the network, which all of a sudden is no longer valid.
I know the password is 100% fine as is the router itself (3 other devices currently using it).
Reboot the laptop several times but same thing every time.
The OS X version is 10.6.7.
    Anyone else seen this issue?
    Cheers.

All too frequently, I'm sad to say.
Sometimes you can recover by rebooting the MacBook.  Sometimes by rebooting the router. Sometimes by changing the router channel number. Sometimes by renaming the network. Rarely by hurling the MacBook at a wall in frustration.

  • MBA doesn't connect to wifi network after waking from sleep

I just bought a new MBA 13". More often than not, it fails to connect to my wireless network when it wakes up from sleep. This is annoying to say the least. Any ideas?

    Hi,
I'm thinking about a trouble with the route table. Try this in a terminal session after startup:
    netstart -rn
    ping <network address>
After somes answer, close the cover to go to sleep mode.
Open the cover and look the result of the ping command
Normaly you don't have a network
cancel the ping command and redo the netstat commande
Normaly some rows are missing in the result (i don' know why)
