My macbook doesn't wake up

I open up a webpage, let the macbook go to sleep and when I try to wake it up (sometimes by opening the lid of the mac or if it's already open just by clicking on any key), and to my surprise it sometimes doesn't wake back up. Other times it'll wake up without a problem but I have encountered the NOT waking back up problem more often. And this is a brand new macbook. I bought it from a reseller store, opened it up and started giving problems right away. Right now it's been sent to Apple Repair Center for the second time and magically it seems that there's no problem over there. The engineer cannot duplicate the same problem that happened to me at home and to the store tech, right in front of his eyes.
Any solution to this problem? I would like to use the mac one of these days since it's almost been a month and I may have had the mac with me for like 3 days total (of course rebooting every single time it wouldn't wake bak up). I must be the ONLY frustated and disatisfied Apple customer on the planet since from what the ad on the web about macbook says: It just works out of the box. Well, mine DOESN'T and nobody wants to take responsibility for it!!!

I realize you're frustrated, and any computer-related difficulty can give the blues, big time.
Give the technicians credit, they do the best they can, and try to solve your (and everyone elses) problem.
Have you done a serach through the support forums, Google, etc. for 'wake from sleep macbook', 'sleep issue macbook', 'won't wake up macbook'?
I don't want to blame you, but try to gather as much info about the problem as you can. I've had several issues with my Macs where it was my fault, not the Mac's, and I didn't reailze the solution was under my nose the whole time.
It could be indeed that you do have a hardware problem, and somewhere along the way they will find it, and you'll have it addressed, I'm almost 100% sure of it.
Make yourself a cup of whatever you need to relax, and take care of yourself. These forum are filled with people like you, and with people who are trying to help.
We all like it when we can exercise patience, and find answers for each other, so do your best to breathe deep, and smile- because your issue will be resolved.
Mac users and tech support are among the best you'll find, believe me.

  • MacBook Doesn't Wake Up (when External FireWire Drives attached)

Anybody else notice their MacBook not waking up from sleep when Fire Wire drives are attached, specifically through the FW port or the Express Card port.
Granted, the MacBook wakes up 50% of the time in general with nothing attached...kind of a crap shoot.

Hi, I have a macbook air for some time now. It works fine, starts reasonable fast and with one exception I'm pleased with it.If I closed the LID or press the on-off button the system sleeps. When I open the lid the next day (8 -12 hrs later) the system doesn't wake up. The log file which I presume is send to Apple did lead to a patch. I saw on the support site various conversations in respect to this issue with various results.
I see that the problem of James even returned and was not reported to be resolved until now.
In my log I have the following messages, "Sleep failure" of last few days. What should I do to resolve this, or is Apple delivering a patch for this?

  • Macbook doesn't wake up after automatic sleep

I've got a problem with my macbook. Whenever it goes asleep from not using it ( automatic, I set the time at 15 minutes ) I need to push the power button for like 2 minutes before it wakes up again. I've many friends who have macbooks, whenever they shut the computer down just by pushing the screen down on the keyboard, they simply need to open it again and it wakes up. Mine doesn't unless I close it and open it 2 minutes later. If I let it shut for something like 10 minutes I then need to press the Power button to have it revive. Sometime I need to press it 2 minutes, sometime a bit less.
That was the first part of the problem. At the beginning it didnt disturb me that much so I didn't try to solve the problem. Now the infaction has mutated. Whenever I put it asleep myself or when it goes automatically I can't restart it. I press the power button but whenever it restarts ( still need to push the power button for 2 minutes ) the screen recovers ( can see the recovering bar down ) and when it reaches the 3 last bar it stops, and an message comes on the front saying there is a problem and I need to restart the computer.
It's very nasty, I can't put my computer asleep, and can do nothing about it.
Has anyone encountered the same problem? Or does anyone know what I can do? I still have my warranty. Should I send it to apple?
Thank you very much for your help.

    Thanks for the help

    try these troubleshooting steps:
_*resetting the System Management Controller SMC*_
_*resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM*_
if that doesn't help, try booting into _*safe mode*_, then reboot normally.

  • Macbook doesn't wake from sleep (bluetooth)?)

My new aluminum macbook has been perfect aside from ...
I bought a new bluetooth mouse and every so often my macbook doesnt wake from sleep. I have read some other bluetooth bugs, is there a workaround? I have been purposely disabling bluetooth before sleeping now and it has worked, but is there a more elegant workaround?

It was the Bluetooth setting. Here is how I fixed it:

  • Macbook doesn't wake up from sleep mode

When my macbook turn to sleep mode and I try to wake it up the screen display stays black .. the only thing that would work to get the screen to work again is to press the on button and then the screen goes grey with white bars and then everything would be fine it’s quite strange it started doing this today , somebody has a solution for me ?

    Try resetting the  SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

  • My MacBook Pro sometimes doesn't wake up from sleep mode

Dear users, my MacBook Pro (model 5,1 - 15" Late 2008) is behaving oddly since I upgraded to OSX Lion. Sometimes, after going into sleep mode, it doesn't wake up. When I hit a key (space or enter), I see the login screen, but it's not possible to type my keyword. The only thing active is "the spinning beach ball of death", so I have to manually shut down my Mac and start over. This problem (and also other problems) did not happen in Snow Leopard. The only thing that changed in my Mac is the OS; other programs remain the same. I already tried reseting PRAM and SMC, and fixing disk errors. Thanks for your attention.

try running a hardware test and see if you get an error code: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh35727.html

  • Macbook Air Haswell-doesn't wake up

As mentioned in the title, literally, my Macbook Air doesn't wake up occasionally.
Sometimes (3 or 4 times out of 3-50) when i close the lid of my notebook and open, nothing appears but  the black screen appears and only the light of the keyboard glows. No input(including trackpad and the keyboard) helps get out of the black screen and the only thing i should do is to turn the power of and turn it on again.
It seems that some users using Macbook Air Haswell and some Macbook Pro models.  And some explains it happens because of chrome browser. I purchased this notebook about a week ago and I can get a new one by contacting Apple Store. Should I get a new one and see if it happens? or should i just restore my notebook and see if it happens again? It's quite confusing and frustrating.

As Linc says, use the phone support, but you may find that Apple tell you a fix is in the pipeline.
There appears to be a glitch with current MBA's where, if it goes to sleep and you try to wake it immediately, it can freeze (search this forum for MBA won't wake from sleep, MBA crash to black screen and similar for loads of info - for example this massive thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5118135?start=0&tstart=0). Your description of what happens matches this picture exactly. Until Apple come up with a fix, you can either switch off sleep or resist the temptation to wake the MBA too quickly after it goes into sleep mode.
Some of us (including me) found this unsatisfactory - particularly as Apple are taking a lot longer to find a solution than they originally claimed - and got a refund. In my case I put the money towards a retina MBP.
As for the Chrome issue, I do not and have never used Chrome but was plagued by the problem nevertheless.
By all means get a replacement using the 14 day exchange, but you may well find that the new MBA does the same (this is what I did within the first 14 days and the replacement was no different).  If you decide the problem is unacceptable, you could consider a refund - then the choice is yours whether to wait, jump ship to a PC or get a different Mac.

  • Macbook air doesn't wake up after improper shutdown

    Hi guys,
I've had this issue for couple times in the past 8 months.
I've consulted Apple support but doesn't seem helpful at all.
They took my MacBook Air for invenstigation for over a week and returned and concluded no issue found.
Hence I had to consult genius on the forum.
I seldomly had this issue, my MacBook Air 2012 just shuts while it's in use, or while it's asleep, and I couldn't wake it up.
It looked like dead and nothing turned it back on, keyboard nor pwoer button.
I could only to wait for another 10 or 15 minutes, and then press the power button again.
Usuallys it comes back from a restart and return to the login menu.
After I log in, it shows there was an inproper shutdown.
This kinda annoys me as I don't know if there's going to be any potential issue after my warranty expires. (still 4 months left)
After suggestion would be much appreciated.

    Hi all,
Thanks for the help. Sorry for the late reply as I was away from Internet access for the past week.
I couldn't reproduce this at will. It happened again this morning.
I was pretty sure I had the power connected, lid closed and connected to my HDMI monitor and USB mouse and keyboard. I left the MacBook Air on when I went to bed, and I had power went sleep after an hour in the energy setting.
When I resumed my computer by pressing keys couple of times (strange, it doesn't wake my computer up with one press) on my USB keyboard, my computer went straight into the login screen. I knew it was shutting down again.
I just did reset SMC but I don't think it helps. I'll monitor it for another week.
I did have the crash log and will send to Apple Support for further investigation.
I'll post it here just in case anyone is interested.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't wake up from sleep mode

My MacBook Pro (late 2011) with OS Mavericks doesn't wake up from sleep mode anymore. Battery is fully charged and the cable is plugged in. I can still hear the ventilator running, but that's all. I never had any problems, but since about 2 weeks this problem occurs. It usually then woke up after 10-15min, but now nothing happened since 4 hours.
Is there anyone who could possible help me? Unfortunately there is no Apple Store in my area where I could go to.

    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article. That's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. Please read the whole article carefully (some of it is hidden by disclosure triangles) and don't skip any of the steps, including the ones under the heading "Additional troubleshooting." If you don't understand any of the steps, ask for guidance.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, from the menu bar select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility
If the checkbox at the bottom marked
              Enable access for assistive devices
is checked, uncheck it and test.
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Privacy ▹ Accessibility
If any applications are listed on the right and have a checked box next to them, uncheck all the boxes and test. You may first have to click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate as an administrator to unlock the settings.
    Step 3
In the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, uncheck the box marked
Put hard disks to sleep when possible
    Step 4
This and the next step must be taken as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You may see one or more reports with a name that begins with "Sleep Wake Failure" followed by a date. Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
    Step 5
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ Diagnostic and Usage Messages
In the search box in the window's toolbar, enter "powerd" (without the quotes.)
You may see one or more lines like this:
    com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure
If you do see that, and you did everything in the preceeding steps, then you're dealing with an internal hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011) doesn't wake the thunderbolt display after sleep

for some reason the display when connected to clamshell macbook pro 17" doesn't wake up when i go to wake up the display from sleep mode.
    what is going on?

The other day I got the blue screen, the fan going on high, and then when I disconnect my thunderbolt connection from my macbook pro - i get a shutdown.
Today I got flickering followed by the fan on high and then again I disconneced my thunderbolt cable and after a minute or two a shudown.
This never happened before.  Actually I was suprised to hear about a firmware update for flickering since that's never happened to me but since updating I now get the flicker.
Any ideas??  Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my work labtop.

  • My macbook pro doesn't wake up after sleep

my macbook pro doesn't wake up after sleep

I'm having the same issue. I've had my logic board replaced twice now, which I did last week and then Monday I had to take it to a Genius Bar again because my hard drive cable was malfunctioning. I don't know why it's happening but I'm really starting to get frustrated with my machine. I bought my MacBook Pro brand new last year in September and ever since I've dropped it in November, it's been really glitchy. After I dropped it, I had to replace my Logic board, graphics card, and hard drive and they covered it.

It has an external SATA controller and a video card with NVIDIA Quadro 4000 chipset on it.
It has a Snow Leopard installed.
The problem it has is that it doesn't wake up once it goes to sleep, either by choosing "Sleep" menu item or by using "Energy Saving" setting.
I notice some people mention a keyboard doesn't respond while his trackpad does. In my case, nothing works.
I don't know if it is due to keyboard or a magic mouse. I tried to connect another wired mouse to the enclosure of the Mac Pro directly, but it did't cause Mac Pro wake up.
By searching on Google, many people seem to have this problem, whether they have Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, and so on.
Personally, I have a 17" PPC iMac, 13" MacBook with Core Duo 2, and have used MacBook Pro 17", but they didn't have this problem.
I tried to reset the SMC, but it didn't help.
Do anyone know what cause this problem and how to solve it?
Is there any patch for this?
    Thank you.

Does it sound like it's waking up but the monitor just doesn't display anything?
I ask because if so, I'm experiencing the same problem.  I have a Quad-Core Mac Pro (no external devices) and if it goes to sleep I have difficulty getting it to display anything on the monitor after waking it up.  Now, I just recently hooked up an additional monitor (VGA) for dual display, and the funny thing is, that monitor will wake, but my main monitor won't.
Sometimes I get this error after boot-up too, where the computer will get to the login screen, but my main monitor is receiving no signal ("at least according to my monitor").
If that's the same issue, then I'll post any success I find for you!
    Best,
    J

  • My MacBook pro wont wake up from sleep. The screen is blank at all times, but I can hear the fan for 5 sec then everything stops. Please help! I don't kno what to do.

My MacBook pro is about 3 yrs old. It is a 2008 model right before the new design came out. Recently I closed it up which puts it to sleep and a couple minutes later when I opened it up the screen stayed blank but could hear the fan running but then the power clicked like it was shutting down and I could hear nothing more. My power supply is working and I have already tried resetting it. Can anyone help me? I don't live exactly near a Mac store to get help.

Before resorting to an LB change-out, try this, as it has fixed many of the "silver-key" Macbook Pros with wake-from-sleep issues:
    1) To get the computer running, do an SMC reset. Instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Your MBP model uses the first option under the subhead, "Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)"
    2) If you get it running, go to System Preferences > Network and select your Airport connection
    3) In the result main pane, click the "Advanced..." button.
    4) You should be looking at a window with multiple tabs at the top; the "Airport" tab (far left) should be active---if not, make it so.
    5) There is a panel showing "Prefered Networks." Use the "minus" button below that window to eliminate any networks that you don't need to access on more than a weekly basis. I'm down to two: the home Airport Extreme Base Station and the network for a museum at which I volunteer once a week.
    5) Click "OK" and close System Preferences.
Now try letting it sleep and see it if wakes up.
When this happened to my Late 2007 MBP, I used Console to read system.log and found that, on waking, the compuer was looking for the wireless network at a lodge where I'd stayed weeks earlier and miles away. Clear the morass of old networks and keeping the list short has completely cured my wake-from-sleep issues.
The steps I listed take less time to do than to read, and are within the ability even of novice Mac users.
If that doesn't work, you may need to seek professional help. If you take it to an Apple Store and they recommend a logic board replacement, ask about a "Depot Repair." Instead of replacing the logic board on-site (which will whack you to the tune of US$700-1100), they send the computer to a central Apple refurb facility that fixes whatever they find wrong for a flat fee of about US$315 (last time someone reported using the service here). Turnaround is about one working week, and people who have taken of this service have reported being very pleased with the outcome.
You don't show a geographic location. This service may not be available if you are outside North America.

  • Macbook won't wake from sleep

My macbook won't wake from sleep.  I have to power down and restart.  I have also noticed that when it is asleep, the sleep indicator light doesn't pulse, it just stays on steady.  Could this be a bug in mavericks?  I have a Seagate external hard drive that I use for my Time Machine backups that it always connected.  But ejecting it before the macbook goes to sleep doesn't seem to solve the problem.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

You can access System Logs and other information on the computer's status in Console utility; where there are endless lists of all the processes ongoing in the Mac OS X. There are specific log-out and other automatic items the system will post to such logs.

Such articles are helpful in so much as they also have additional links.
Perhaps the computer is not going to sleep. The system logs can tell this.
Regarding power management, sleep, and other activities, have you read through the article about the System Management Controller to see if any of the items listed there can help? They'd take time to go through the list. And the end item is a reset of the SMC, after reading through and troubleshooting from the list.
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

A good idea is to make a backup of your content in the computer, to an external hard disk drive, so when or if you end up totally erasing the hard disk drive (to include secure erase one-pass overwrite) and reformat GUID, that an all new system could be installed on there, in part of a larger troubleshooting effort.
Actually, if you have an externally enclosed hard disk drive with its own power supply, (not port power) and then use Carbon Copy Cloner (see Bombich software) to make a bootable clone of your entire system to a large enough external drive capable of booting in OS X, then you could get to the bottom of this issue. While keeping a boot copy of what you already have, because you can run the computer from an external clone.

is macsales; or a place to look to compare real details.
The problem could be based in software, or in hardware. Troubleshooting against either possibility is how to resolve this problem. Some models of earlier MacBook & other intel-based Macs do not really like Mavericks; or perhaps like it less than an earlier system it may have shipped with. The earliest like Snow Leopard best.
Anyway, there is a solution but it won't be a one-liner.
I've done some 40 hour days, troubleshooting issues.
Worst problem for me was buying one w/Applecare.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • MacBook Air not wake up after sleep

    Hi,
My MacBook Air(Mid 2012) can't wake up after sleep. I recently updated operation system to Mac OS X Mavericks and now after sleep mode screen goes black and nothing happens after this. Only thing that I could do is hard reboot by pressing power button and boot again. Do anyone have the same issue and suggestions how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance
    Dmitrii

Same thing here. MBA 2011 working perfectly until I updated to Mavericks.
It often doesn't wake up fully. It does draw the password input box but there's no text cursor and no input is possible. The mouse cursor is not visible either. Waiting does nothing (tried ~15 minutes, no change). Closing the lid does not put the laptop back to sleep, it's fully frozen and the only way out is a reboot by holding the power button.
