My Macbook experience

I've had my Macbook for almost two weeks, and after spending a lot of quality time getting to know it, I thought I'd share my thoughts for anyone who is on the fence.
I've never had a laptop before. I loved playing with my friend's Powerbook 12" whenever I had the chance, but I always thought the Powerbooks/iBooks were too underpowered for the price. The iBooks were total crap to me, especially after I played with one on display. I hated the clicker on the trackpad and was disappointed with the screen resolution and brightness (on the PB too). Seemed cheap, felt cheap, and technically was cheap. So when I got a computer last year, even though I wanted a laptop, I got an iMac. I loved that little guy and even though the Superdrive gave me some problems with reading discs and the fans got loud sometimes, I have to admit it was hard to say goodbye to it. I sold it on Craigslist with plans to get a Macbook.
I ended up getting the White 2.0 Macbook and upgraded the RAM to 2 gigs. I love the way this thing is built. Everything seems to mesh well together, from the screen to the keyboard, to the case. I have to admit, I had serious reservations about buying a white laptop. I've already had my girlfriend get ink on my wristpad (wash your hands before using it!) and scrubbed it off with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Consequently, you can see some of the finish has worn off if you tilt the Macbook to the right angle. Drives me crazy, but if it ever gets worse Applecare said that you can replace it for $89. Not bad. The keys are great and they feel better than the Powerbook's and more responsive. The trackpad is HUGE! I love having a two-finger right click and can never imagine having a laptop without it or two-finger scrolling.
This computer is a champion. It takes almost everything I can throw at it. It still impresses me every time I download or watch a movie and can do anything else without seeing a major slowdown. I don't get bummed everytime I have to restart, since restarts now take only 20 seconds. No joke. Photoshop CS (not CS2) seems to work pretty good. Of course my G5 runs circles around it with CS, but not very big circles. It's usable, but I generally close everything else when I use it. Universal apps FLY on this thing. iLife '06 is really impressive, especially since my girlfriend is a shutterbug and we play a lot with iPhoto. Frontrow...it's cool, but not that great. I downloaded MediaCentral and have only demoed it, but it seems like everything Frontrow could be. Search for it! I was seriously worried about the GMA 950 integrated graphics when I bought this computer, but I don't think it's a big deal now. I don't play computer games much, that's what my Xbox 360 is for. I downloaded Civilization 3 and find that with the RAM installed it works great. Oh and this thing is quiet! My G5 had fans that drove me nuts when I was trying to sleep. I'd describe myself as having very sensitive hearing and when the fans kick up during installs they are still quieter and less annoying than my G5 was. You never hear them during normal use unless the temps get over the 80 degree barrier. Even then they stay on for only about 30 seconds while the temps drop.
So what don't I like? This is my second Macbook. The first one had a terrible trackpad button and was flimsy and didn't register clicks well on the sides. It's been said before, so I won't drive it home, but this guy is hot. Yes you won't be able to keep it on your lap for a long time, but it's better that way. That heat can make you sterile, so use a desk or a lap stand. I'm buying one soon. The hard drive is small. So small I can imagine few people will not upgrade it. I was going to buy a bigger drive this week, but there was a deal on a 300 GB internal drive (that I made into an external)...and I was overdue for a backup. I can say that upgrading the memory is easy, but you have to really push the sticks in there pretty hard. Hard enough to leave marks on your finger for a while, but if you're lucky you only have to do it once. The screen gets dirty and scratches easily. The case does too, but you'll get over it.
This is a great computer for the money and a more than worth successor to the iBook/PB 12". I have no problem recommending it to anyone who asks. It does have some downsides, but it's a Macbook Pro minus the graphics card for almost $1000 less! Seriously, this little computer can outpace my year old G5 and costs the same as it did when I bought it. It's the most functional, flexible computer I've ever had. Barring serious problems down the line, I'm really happy with it!

your mackbook experience sounds really lame!
Actually his MacBook experience comes off as very knowledgeable and believable, especially for an experienced Mac user.
check out the inquirer, do a search on the macbook,
read(big key), you'll see all the problems that you
have are the same as eveyone else.
The Inquirer isn't really a reliable or well-respected source for Mac users. 95% of all MacBook users haven't had problems, its the small majority of who have and of those, the largest majority don't even own or use a MacBook and are here trolling.
i really like the part about apple wanting to charge
you $89 to replace their faulty finished case.
Hey, you screw up the case and want it replaced, $89 is a small price to pay. Try getting a replacement for one of Lenovo's newer ThinkPads and you're talking $250 and up. I own three of those machines and haven't opened them since buying my BlackBook.
as for runnig hot, that's a HUGE problem. it's a
laptop, not a desk top, it should be on your lap!
remember all that cash-money you paid to have a
laptop??
No, it's a notebook dubbed a "MacBook" and it is no hotter than any other laptop on the market today. Dell notebooks are hotter as are ThinkPads. And with the latter you have to run an MS operating system which makes them a poor choice for the notebook user.
So when are you going to stop using your Microsoft machine and actually buy a Mac machine?

  • Black MacBooks - Experiences?

I'll be buying a new MacBook as soon as Apple announces the Leopard upgrade (and provides a voucher for a free bump). I really like how the black MacBooks look, and the price difference (only $50 more for black with a similar configuration) isn't that big of a deal. The postings that I've read about paint flaking and chipping have me concerned, however.
For those of you who own black MacBooks, would you recommend them? Would you buy black again after your experiences with your existing laptop?
I plan on keeping this for a few years, and know that the white finish holds up really well - just want to make sure, given the cost, that it will still be presentable after a couple of years.

I haven't had any problems yet with mine, and it was a Refurb... Some people say that the edges are "too sharp" and it hurts when your hand/palm sits on them, but they really aren't that bad and you shouldn't be having your hands resting in that area anyways (If you aren't typing you can move them elsewhere, they are your hands...).
I think this is where people were getting the peeling (where it first started) and also it is the same area that you use to open the MacBook up with your fingers (possibly causing the "paint to peel" effect).
But I don't think there are that many people compared to the number of Black MacBooks out there, that actually have this problem. My suggestion for if it starts happening, and I wasn't going to freak out about doing a "minor" fix to my laptop, I would just take some clear nail polish (or the "top coat" that they sell) and use it over the exposed area and over the edges of the matte black coat a bit. Make sure it looks smooth on the edges at least (even if not a straight line), the material underneath is supposedly Black too, just more shiny/polished like the white MacBooks, so the clear polish shouldn't make it much more shiny/glossy than it would look without a fix.
This way you at least get to seal it, and possibly reinforce the areas that were peeling (by adding another layer of material with different thickness and durability) as well as possibly preventing the top coat of the MacBook to keep peeling (just think of a bad sunburn and how it peels, if you can get it when the edges of the coating are still flat and attached- which will soon lift up and tear more- then you can possibly nip it in the bud).
Also, if you were to do this, you would want to make sure that you were really careful, have it in a safe place where it wouldn't be disturbed and could stay to dry for hours (away from pets etc), make sure everything could still be opened up ("don't paint the windows shut") and all that type of stuff. But just thinking of this offhand, I don't see any real problems in doing this (you would want to make sure that the nail polish wouldn't "eat away" at any of the layers of coating of course) and it is cheap and should be great for catching any areas from peeling before it gets too bad...

  • After upgrading on Yosemite my MacBook experiences sound problems

    Hi, everyone.
I have a MacBook Pro 13 with Retina Display, late 2012.
After I upgraded to Yosemite I faced a problem regarding to my speakers.
When I start to work with my Mac after it was sleeping for a few hours (after a night, for example), I simply can't control the volume of sound.
In other words, when I use F10-F12 buttons to regulate the sound, my Mac shows me a crossed circle, as I don't have speakers at all.
And the only thing helps me (except rebooting) is go to settings -> Sound -> Output volume and scroll the volume bar manually.
After these actions, the speakers are in control with buttons as well.
That is annoying and I duno how to fix it except reinstalling OSX.
The other fact I was upgrading to Yosemite from Mavericks.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi shenya,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know issues with sound can be very frustrating and it sounds like you have done some great troubleshooting already. In this situation I would recommend resetting the PRAM on your MacBook Pro. Please use the attached article for information on completing this process.

  • Minor gripe about MacBook Eject CD/DVD button

I've been too positive about my overall MacBook experiences so far, so thought I'd post a minor gripe
Does everyone else's Eject CD/DVD key cause the CD/DVD drive to audibly try to access the drive, even if there is no CD/DVD in the drive?
The only reason I ask is that on my Mac Mini, pressing the Eject CD/DVD puts the Eject Icon on the screen, but doesn't actually make the CD/DVD drive audibly try to access it.
(Parallels also tries to access the drive as well on every startup, quite annoying )

You'll always see the eject icon on the desktop when you press the eject key. The weird thing is the drive actually trying to eject when there is no disc in the drive. None of my other slot drive Apples have done this.

  • Why should I buy another macbook?

Apple is incredible with both their software and the physical design of their products. HOWEVER, since owning my macbook which is three years old I have already had to replace the battery, my wife has also had to replace her macbook battery, and now my friend with a 1 year old macbook pro is having battery issues and needs a replacement. In addition, now my OS won't even boot up. This is so dissappointing because I previously had a dell laptop that I got 6 years out of never needing a new battery or having it cease to start up till it's last day. I don't mind paying more for a superior product but my macbook experience has not been superior with regards to performance. As much as I like apple I'm ready to get a PC laptop for half the price and without such a consistant record for battery failures and limited years of use.
I know apple care is out there but I take incredible care of my belongings and computers. I have yet to need insurance on any electronic item I have ever owned due to personal misuse and find it wrong on principle that I would need to buy it because a manufacturer has a track record of regular manufacturing problems.
Is anyone else dissappointed with long term use of apple products? The online forums are full of these battery and OS loading issues, which further discourages me. Anyone else considered or left apple and moved to PC?  Why should I continue to buy another product from them? Anyone switched from Apple's OS to Ubuntu?
    -Jason

As a PC veteran of 11yrs, I switched to Mac last year and got my first Macbook Pro in August 2010. I must say, after using Snow Leopard for almost a year, I am NEVER going back to PC. Honestly, I feel if you want to switch back to PC because of price, that's ok. But switching over reliaility issues w/ Macbook Pro, I can't agree on.
I would like to start by saying I DON"T WORK FOR APPLE
Now, the new Lion is coming out next month which is going to bring over 250 feautures to the Mac and even more stable.
Plus, statics show that over time, Mac computers last 3 to 4 times the average PC life span. I too can vouch on this as a PC user of 11 yrs.
My leaving apple, you leave 1 Cutstomer support, a company known for the best is build quality, and the most Advanced operating system on the planet.
I would advice you to take a look at the preview of " WINDOWS 8 ".
Moreover, I recently updated my 2010 13" Macbook Pro to a 2011 13" one and I can concur that you WILL NOT be disaapointed with the New Sandy Bridge implemented in the New Macs. Plus due to Mac AWESOME resale value, I was able to sell my old 13" one on eBay for $1099.
Tell me which PC sells for that much
    The choice is urs.

  • First Macbook

Hello i am new here and to Macs .I must admit i am having a terrible time with Safari hanging slow crashing i use FF but i am wondering if i am doing something wrong? this is my first notebook also i love the portability. i just want to enjoy the Macbook experience but so far i am just tearing my hair out.i read as much as i can here to learn the ins and outs of this MACBOOK so please bear with me as i learn my way around.. is there another browser that would work in place of SAFARI with less known problems thanks so much SUE

    Hello Sue,
Welcome to the world of Apple
You might find Safari acts a bit more spritely if you change the DNS settings on your machine. DNS is what one computer uses to find the location of another computer to be able to talk to it. If your DNS are slow to respond with the location then you will see Safari acting very slow. This link describes everything you would need to do. Have a read and see what you think:
    https://www.opendns.com/homenetwork/start/device/apple-osx-leopard
(Firefox appears to have it's own method for using DNS which is why it may appear unaffected.)
Other browsers you might want to try are:
    - [Camino|www.caminobrowser.org] (my favourite)
    - [Opera|www.opera.com]
    - [OmniWeb|www.omnigroup.com/omniweb] (not free, but lots of features)
    - [iCab|http://www.icab.de/screenshots.html]
    Hope that helps.

  • Didn't eject my external hard drive now it will not reconnect

I just got my MacBook Air, been using a PC up until now.  Earlier this morning I plugged in my external hard drive and transfered some music onto my MacBook Air.  When I removed my external hard drive I didn't not eject it, now when I plug it in my MacBook does not even see it.  I tried different hard drives and I can see them. I even tried using that hard drive on my old PC and it works. How do I get my MacBook to recognize the hard drive again?  Still new to the whole MacBook experience.

I did the same and was able to see it in Utilities, but not mount it.  I read this article and followed the steps and it fixed the problem http://osxdaily.com/2013/05/13/mount-unmount-drives-from-the-command-line-in-mac -os-x/
    Utilities - Terminal
Type:  diskutil list  to find your drive (mine is disk2s2)
Unmount the drive:  diskutil unmount /dev/disk2s2
Mount the drive:  diskutil mount /dev/disk2s2
The drive immediately appeared on my desktop allowing full access with no damaged files or corrupt disk.

  • Weird name under the "Shared" of the Finder's sidebar

I have a macbook pro which is just upgraded to Lion.
It was going fine but few hours ago, a weird name that I don't know showed up under the 'Shared" of my Finder's sidebar. When I cliked it, it said "Connection failed" and disappeared. Now there is no "Shared" in the sidebar at all.
So first of all, what is this "Shared"?
And if there is another computer under "Shared", does it mean that computer can see what I'm doing or something?
Also, since it said it failed to connect, that computer wasn't connected to mine, right?
    Am I being hacked????????????
Thank you, I'm just a bit concerned with this... odd predicament that I never encountered to during my macbook experience.

So this unknown is using my network because of my insecure wireless router, but it's not like that device can look into my account?
Yes, that's a possibility.  If your wireless network does not have a password, that's the most obvious explanation.  I live in a suburban area, houses close but not too close, and I can see up to four of my neighbors' networks, depending on the day and what part of the house I'm in.  The ones that are open, I could join if I chose to.  In an apartment building, you're going to have many more people close to you, while if you live out on a farm somewhere, you probably have nobody living in range.  In any situation where you have people living (or commonly travelling) nearby, you should lock down your network with a password.
And no, that device can't hack your computer unless you have a service open in System Preferences -> Sharing.  You won't by default.  Of course, an untrusted person on your network could potentially view all your network traffic, which could be a problem.  All the more reason to lock down the network.

  • Airport Extreme Radio Mode

I have an Airport Extreme (older one that I believe doesnt broadcast dual radio mode).  I have multiple Apple devices (2 iPhones and 1 iPod Touch) that I would like to connect via WiFi.  When I have the wireless network broadcasting in b/g radio mode I can see and connect to my network but in that mode my Macbook connection is very slow (< 2mpbs per speedtest.net).  If I set Airport to n 5GZ or a compatible I get great speeds on Macbook (20 mpbs +) but cant access via iPhones/iPod Touch.
Is there anything I can do to have both access with mobile devices and still have decent Macbook connection?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    c-

    Bob,
Thanks for the reply.  I have tried the 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) mode.  When I use that mode I can indeed connect my iDevices however my Macbook experiences download speeds of < 2mbps (according to speedtest.net).  I use a real world test of trying to download Apple keynote from iTunes store under different radio modes.  Under N 5gh, N 2.ghz, or N (a compatible) the latest keynote which is 1.22gb will download in about 35 to 50 min.  When I use b/g compatible mode iTunes tells me it will be 7 hours.
Every once in a while I will set to b/g and test speeds and if I get lucky and see speeds of > 15 mbps and then leave it alone everything is perfect.  But it seems completely random.  I need to just keep trying, hope to get lucky and then hope it doesnt go away.
I was hoping that there was something in a deeper setting while under b/g compatible mode that would allow me to have acceptable speeds on Macbook.
    Thanks,
    c-

  • Really mixed feelings about discolouration repair

    Hi,
I've just had my white MacBook repaired for the discolouration issue, and I have really mixed feelings about it, so I hope no one minds too much my venting here...
Firstly, the repair service: well, it seemed excellent at first. Amazing, in fact. They sent me a box on Friday which I received on Tuesday. It shipped straight back to Apple who repaired it on the Wednesday and returned it to me on the Thursday (today) - great. And the inner casing of my MacBook is now pristine white again, which is lovely. However...
    1) They only replaced the casing around the keyboard, and did not bother to replace the casing around the screen. So there is still a tiny bit of yellow discolouration around the iSight camera, where I open the computer. I can understand how they would not notice this as it was not as exaggerated as the palm-rests, but of course, my hands to not stay in contact with it for as long so I imagine it will only get worse. What I am surprised about, however, is that they did not just replace that part too as a matter of course, given that both parts are made of the same material and came from the same batch.
    2) There is now a small nick on the polycarbonate casing right next to the part they replaced - blatantly caused by something they used to prise off the palm-rest plastic. It is only very small and I'm not going to be too anal about it, but it is annoying that engineers would cause any damage to a machine.
    3) They wiped my hard drive. Okay, I'm all backed up as they did warn me that they couldn't guarantee that my data would be saved, but I assumed that was just a standard warning. Why on earth would they have any need to wipe my hard drive when all they are doing is replacing the top casing?
I'm off to phone AppleCare about these issues right now...

Update... Having called AppleCare, it turns out that they didn't wipe my hard drive at all - they replaced it! It turns out that the diagnostic tests they do as a matter of course before returning a product suggested that the hard drive could potentially fail... Ouch.
As for the discolouration, it seems that Apple have only recognised the palm-rest issue as problem, and not the part around the screen - despite the fact that they are made from the same plastic. I spoke to a very helpful AppleCare rep, and I am about to send him pictures of all of these problems - the nick in the polycarbonate caused by an engineer, the discolouration around the iSight (which is actually impossible to take a photo of at this early stage) and - something I discovered whilst on the phone to them - how the new top-casing isn't quite flush on the left and beneath the trackpad (I can get my thumbnail between the top-casing and the polycarbonate).
The AppleCare folk have been very nice and very helpful, but I can't but help feel a little disappointed with my MacBook experience so far, even though everything else about it is great. All of these issues have just dampened the "wow" factor I used to have with my iBook...

  • Fan and HDD noise

    Hey guys!
I recently noticed the fan on my macbook pro mid 2012 13 inch to be a tad noiser than what it's use too, before the mac was so quiet you could hardly hear it working, now you can hear the fan noticably.
I checked out the fan app and it's roughly doing 2000rpm with the temp on the app saying it's around 48 - 52 degrees celsius when nothing is running other than safari.
I then used the temp app and got these results:
    http://puu.sh/6QwfB.png
    http://puu.sh/6Qwh8.png
I have also noticed over the last day that the HDD has got noiser, after running a S.M.A.R.T test it came back as verified but i am almost 100% sure that it is more noticable than before. The sound i hear is the read/write sound, i checked to make sure nothing was running and finder was not indexing or anything, it just to me sounds louder. obviously, as the mac is from mid 2012 it could of had some use so i am a bit worried about the noise incase it is starting to fail! (all files have been backed up)
I then noticed some issues with the windows partition i made with bootcamp, it became unbearably slow and would often crash when loading up chrome which is what it was not like before, i assume this points towards something wrong with the hard drive but i am yet to see any issues with OSX (will be taking it to lectures next week so im sure i can spot any issues then as i will be using it a fair bit!)
I hope i don't sound like too much of an idiot, i bought this macbook pro second hand (still has a year left of apple care!) and i am not 100% sure if the figures i have given are normal. I can live with the fan noise but the HDD noise is driving me insaine when in a quiet room!
Hope this is just me being silly, as i said im new to the macbook experience and hope to stay this way, hoping these are common things of a macbook and i'm just being a bit OTT.
    Thanks!

    Okay,
Just checked my console and this one error pops up:
    10/02/2014 12:06:48.000 kernel[0]: SMC::smcReadKeyAction ERROR TC0D kSMCBadArgumentError(0x89) fKeyHashTable=0x0xffffff801c040000
It seems to be doing it every 3 seconds or so!
EDIT: fixed this, was an app causing it!

  • Beware 10.5.5 + Openoffice & PDF export!  - downgrade option needed

First symptoms were blank or garbled menus, followed by ATSServer CPU hogging. Even having to turn off Airport connections to get at Finder before out of control CPU.
Multiple Hostile Restarts [ on!off ] later, and failed attempts to back up to the 10.5.4 dmg installer I had to boot the Time Machine back to Sept. 17...
Apple Dev Boys and Girls: I have enjoyed my MacBook experience, trouble free for most of this year - How about a Time Machine Option to UNDO hostile updates?

It's definitively not only a problem of OpenOffice PDFs. Have hundreds of PDFs generated with ReadIris OCR. They worked perfectly until 10.5.5 was installed.
When the finder generates the preview icons of the PDFs already at this timepoint the complete system hangs. If you have some PDFs on your desktop and the finder starts up the system hangs.
Had to start into single user mode and to move these PDFs from my desktop to get back a responsive finder. Incredible.
From within Acrobat Reader it is possible to open all these PDFs without any trouble - so this shows that the problem is not caused by the PDFs itself.
I checked if downgrading 10.5.0 will solve my problems - and indeed everything worked again.
To verify that it is really the update to 10.5.5 that causes all the trouble I run the 10.5.5 combi update again. AND the trouble started again.
Apple - what a shame!!! I'm using mac since begin of the 90s. Never experienced such a hassle with Mac and Mac software.

  • My MacBook Pro Experiences

    Hey Guys,
Since theres a lotta negative and positive stuff flying around here about everyone's MacBook Pro issues, I thought I would post with some of my experiences.
Firstly, whenever I got to buy something, I always research it a LOT and since this is the first Mac laptop I have ever bought, I made sure I did a LOT more!
After a lot of reading, I decided that the upcoming 17inch at the time was not for me, (student after all so way out of my price range) and since the graphics memory wasnt a huge issue for me, I decided to look further into the 1.83GHz version of the MBP.
As I'm a music student and I run a lot of applications like Logic, Reason, Ableton Live etc, processor speed is a small issue, but is not paramount as 95% of the time the devices I use such as Audio Interfaces will handle most of the stuff the processor normaly would.
This then brought me to memory. Astounded by how much the Apple Store wanted to put an extra sim of Memory into the MBP (£140 for a 1Gig) I decided to look around. First port of call was Crucial (www.crucial.com/uk) and lo and behold, they had the same stick delivered for £114 - I could do with that £26 quid!
Reading further, I found that Apple are nice and release some documentation on adding your own RAM to the MBP. This is helpfull, and means that I could actualy do it myself to get a REAL increase in speed for the machine.
(1Gig of RAM and above is the real sweet spot for MacOSX Tiger it seems)
So that aside I decided to order the 1.83GHz beast. I had to wait a while for some money to transfer from my acount, but in the mean time I rang the Apple store to find out some information about ordering the unit.
The guy i spoke to was very helpful and emailed me with his details saying, as soon as I was ready to order I should email him back and he would phone me to complete the order. Very nice.
I had to wait a couple of extra days for the money to transfer to my acount - it was going from one bank to another, but in the mean time I was able to email this guy back and have him reply with lots of details about my order and the unit itself.
The day finally came to order the beast. My money had successfully transferred, and I was ready. I emailed the guy from Apple at 7am. At 7.40 he rang me and we started the order. (20minutes before the Apple store is supposed to open to customers)
The order was simple, and I was able to obtain my student discount meaning I had the init for £1214.95 delivered. I also bought a mighty mouse as I'd had one before and they were great. The guy also informed me about the student diascount I could receive on the Apple Care plan. This meant instead of £279 it would cost me a mere £50 for the same thing. Bargain, and well worth it.
The order was completed, and although the product did not arrive the next day as I'd expected I was informed by them that it would take slightly longer as they had some problems and had longer lead times at the moment. Ordering on a wednesday I wasnt holding out for getting it by the end of the week, but I actualy did!
I got a phone call from home whilst I was out at my University saying that my package had arrived, but no one was home (DOH!) so they left a note.
I furisly rang up the company, and found out if I could go and pick the unit up, to which they told me yes. I would be able to go and pick it up from Oxford. I was all but racing down the motorway on my way home, before I got another call from home, saying "The delivery guy came to the door and said 'i heard you were going to go all the way to oxford for this, so i thought i'd bring it to you on my way home'" how very nice!
So my unit arrived and i rushed home to "play"
The box was very swish, made it look lovely - typical apple design.
Got it out and first thing I noticed were a couple of cosmetic damages to the front of the unit, on the keyboard, and to the right hand side on the speaker grill. Ignoring this I continued to boot it up and have a play.
Setup was really simple, configured my network and user acount flawlessly, without the need to plug it on once.
the mightymouse that also arrived that day and plugging it in during the setup process it simply worked. Lovely.
In a couple of minutes everything was up and running, I was browsing the web, listening to music from my windows computers and typing an email to Apple about those **** cosmetic issues. :-P
I have to say, I havent had any real problems with the heat issues. If you sit the unit on bare skin, maybe then it would hurt... but it's not burning hot, its warm.
As for the noises, yea, it has made some, but to be honest, I can barely hear them most of the time unless it's deadly silent in the room, and when is it ever in my line of work as a musician :P If I want to get rid of the sound, I can simply open the Mirror widget and it goes, simple as that. I havent tried any of the hacks and workarounds that people have been offering around on here, because I havent found it a big issue yet.
Screen problems - I hold my hands up right now and say that the ONLY screen problems I have found with my MBP is when I have used Windows on the machine. the rest of the time (In MacOS) it is FLAWLESS.
I do have to say though, the resolution is lovely, being able to have so much desktop real estate is fantastic, and the DVI to VGA adapter is brilliant for when I want to show things off, or use a second monitor with the laptop.
BootCamp - Afraid that someone might throw something Windows only at me one day at uni I decided to have a go with BootCamp on my box. Worked fantastically well. No problems whatsoever. (However I must add I almost never boot Windows on the machine just cos Mac OS is so useable for me!)
My only one gripe is that the @ and the " keys are in the opposite positions from where I wouild like them to be. But who cares.
I would highly recommend one of these machines to anyone who is looking at getting one... I have stopped using my desktop for good now. It's just pointless.
    I'm sure you'll love it
Thats the end of my story.
Really I just wanted another excuse to use this baby :P

I just checked and I have a Week 14 model.
The scratches - apple told me about the process for sending it back... waiting, getting a new one etc... and i said what about compensating me, as otherwise the machine is fine. They agreed to give me a case for the machine and £50.
    Thank you very much Apple!
Heat - it gets warm, thats it. Not scalding. Warm. I can quite nicely put it on my bare legs and stomach if i'm lying down and its just "comfy" warm
Whine... i had a VERY slight hi pitch noise, but as i mentioned, it's NOTHING really... can barely hear it. No one else but i can actualy hear it (my young ears) and i can fix it by running and then closing the Mirror app if its really an issue.
As for anything else. It's perfection.

  • Please explain me, how to remove an usb stick or memory chip? With experiences only in pc:s, I do not find on my first apple e.g. MacBook Air a solution. Until now I have succeeded to destroy one chip full of photos and - there's no life more in the port.

Please explain me, how to remove an usb stick or memory chip? With experiences only in pc:s, I do not find on my first apple e.g. MacBook Air a solution. Until now I have succeeded to destroy one chip full of photos and - there's no life more in the port...
Someone told me just to remove the chip in clicking it to the trash can and voilá - it would be done. But as I did so, on the screen appeared a text which let me know, that that way had been the wrong one...
I should have clicked Finder plus something.... which I do not now remember but which was then not found behind the Finder.
So please would someone be so kind and tell me, where I can find explanations for the most simple functions. The manual I got does not include a clue.
    Thank you!

First make sure that no application is using or has open any files on the disk. Then:
Click and drag the disk icon on the desktop to the trash. Wait for the system to recognize the action, and the icon should disappear from the desktop. It is then safe to remove the device.
Alternatively, you can secondary click on the disk icon, and then primary click "Eject (name of disk)". Wait for the icon to disappear off the desktop, and then it is safe to remove the drive.
Here is a detailed help document on the subject.
