My MacBook fan auto turn on

After i turn off my Macbook, just suddenly, the built-in fan in my Macbook auto turn on, until my battery totally drained out, then it stops. I dun know why it happens, what can i do to help my MacBook, i just used it for about a month. Thanks

Help!!! Macbook fan not turning on!

I have a problem with my macbook fans. The fans do not turn on until the computer has been running at 80°C for 5 minutes and only then my macbook only runs at 3000 revolutions. The fans idle is 2000... I know this because I have an application from the mac app store called temp. guage and that tells me temperatures and fan speeds.
The fans to both of my brothers macbooks turn on once the computer is about 60-75°C and it turns onto 6000 revolutions and their idle is 2000 revolutions . Could it be that I have a macbook and not a macbook pro? Or could there be something wrong with my fans?
When I got the computer about 1 year ago the fans turned on a lot but I didn't have this app for various reasons but I could hear the fan turning on. I know that the fan back then was faster becaue i could heat it and when the fans now are at 3000 I can not hear it.
Could a connection be loose - I have never opened the back case but I carry the macbook a lot with my in school? Could there be so much dust on the fan that it tries to spin faster but it simply can't? Could it be the grease on the fan? can anyone help me narrow my decision? Do I need to replace my fan?
Today I was at the apple store and I did a diagnostic test. The only problem was with my speakers but I did not notice that. Point it the fans were all right in the diagnostic test but in reality the fans are not all right...
Someone please help! This is a desperate problem my computer keeps on shutting off because it gets too hot.

MacBook fan keeps turning on

Whenever I open up my MacBook, the fan turns on. Many people say it turns on because of your antivirus and because iStat Menus causes it to turn on, but I don't have either, and the fan still turns on. What should I do?

If you have high CPU activity you need to figure out what is causing it. Click "Go" on your toolbar, click Utilities, click Activity Monitor, click CPU on lower left, click CPU on upper left, click it again and see which Process Name is causing the trouble. Either you will know what to do (kill the process, delete it or investigate it, tweak it or whatever) or you will not know. But you will have something to tell the Genius when you visit Apple. If your CPU is high then that produces heat, which only means your fans are on high for a reason. In other words your fans are NOT faulty, but you are not managing your OSX effectively.
The SMC is free and do-able, and it DOES address fans (they are listed in the article) but like all of these maintenance operations they can potentially cause trouble. Only do these operations if you have cloned your OSX to an external hard drive, or if you are using Time Machine (same thing). Or if you don't mind losing all your data and wind up re-installing OSX from scratch.
* Kind of a side-issue: Open System Preferences and get into your System Accounts, click Login Items and see what is there. Myself, I pretty much remove everything using the + and - signs. These items will place themselves there without you knowing - sometimes you benefit, but rarely. And they can run in the background without you knowing.
* Kind of a side-issue Part II: Open System Preferences, open Print & Fax, open Print Queue, delete any jobs that might be there. The field under 'Status' should be empty.

Macbook and isight auto-turns on!

I've bought a new macbook, the middle one, and i don't have reinitialized it, so i have the original tiger installation.
I know which software i have installed, but i don't understand why my isight auto turns on randomly!
Happens some time, i see the green light, but i have not opened any software that use the webcam and, if i try to start ichat, it says that the webcam is already in use....
So, it's an hardware problem? it's happen only to me?

Hi Luke,
check your dock for any application opened that might use your iSight. Any application open will show black arrow/triangle at the bottom of the icon.
Suspected application are iPhoto, Comic Life, Instant messenger, etc.
Also reset PRAM and SMC on your macbook:

And repair your permission by opening application folder > utilities > disk utility > repair permission.
Update your software and hardware to the latest and do another repair permission after that.

Hmmm. You have done the basics. If you open the ActivityMonitor app in the Utliities folder, select CPU usuage in the column- flip it so highest % is on top. Is ther an app in that column that is spiked? Quit that app.
You can run the Apple Hardware Test by booting holding the D key on restart, this may generate an error code. Not the most complete test but it is a start.
If no AHT- Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the d key, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.

Macbook won't turn on, won't charge either (no green/amber light)

So I was cleaning my keyboard today (just with water and a towel) and after cleaning, the screen shut off but my macbook was still turned on (could hear the fans). It wouldn't respond to anything and I tried a hard shut down but this did not work either. I was forced to take the battery out to shut it down.
Now it won't turn on. I tried plugging it into my magsafe power adapter but it won't charge. There is no light (neither green or amber). My battery still has 2 green dots when I test it.
I've tried resetting the power settings by removing the charger, battery, and then holding the power down for 5 seconds. This did not work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had a very similar problem. My battery died about nine months ago and I've been going off AC since then. It recently started not turning on though.. I closed the lid one day and went for a walk and when I came back about an hour later it was like it was in a constant sleep mode. Since then it turned on once successfully. But I am getting the same dim green light for about three seconds and then it goes full. When I try to turn it on the fan or hard drive (not sure) starts spinning and the screen flashes but then it just sits with the sleep light on. When I read your thread though I realized I may have gotten it wet when carrying it to and from my car. I no longer have a warranty or care plan or whatever so apple won't help me one bit. SO yeah I thought I'd share that and maybe it can help you somehow..

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.

5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

I started the recording when it was mooing, and then I ran a process to max out the cpu and heat it up. As you can hear, the hotter it gets, the harder the fan spins. Once I turn off the process (you will hear a beep on the movie when the process is terminated), you can hear the fan start to spin down. About 30 seconds after the movie was done, the macbook resumed mooing, and is still mooing as I type this.
It's an interesting look at how the macbook heat management is telling the fan to work.

Macbook fan keeps running, won't sleep or hibernate

So here's the deal, my macbook (late 2008 aluminum) fan is always running loudly, from 4500-6000 rpm, and the temperature stays around 80ºF even if the computer is idling. I have to shut it off for the fan to turn off. When I close the lid, the screen shuts off, but the computer won't sleep, even if I choose sleep from the apple menu. I tried unplugging the power and letting the screen turn off, thinking it would hibernate, but it will not hibernate either. I made sure there is no dust in vents or anything, tried SMC reset, installed latest software, am running SMC fan control, nothing seems to be working. I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.3. and my activity monitor shows no unusual activity. It does feel hot, so I don't think the heat sensor is off, it is just heating up and won't cool down. Could the fan be running poorly and not cooling properly? Please help.

There's a log in Event Viewer. It might have the issue logged.
Does uninstalling the Power Management driver and reinstalling v1.62 help?

MacBook Doesn't Turn On

It's a fact: my Windows PC doesn't freeze/crash as much as my MacBook does.
Just now my new MacBook froze up on me for the fith time in three weeks. Here's what happens: I shut down my MacBook the same way I always do, and then I close my MacBook's lid. I come back later to use my MacBook and realize that the "sleep light" is lit up. I open the lid and the sleep light fades away. I press keys and nothing happens, I move my finger across the trackpad and nothing happens, I press my clicker below the trackpad and nothing happens, I press and even hold the power button and nothing happens. I check the battery by clicking the battery button on the back of my MacBook each time, and never has it indicated that my battery was low (never has less than two out of five dots lit up). So the battery is not the problem here.
How I eventually get the laptop to start up is different every time. In the past pressing the keys over and over for a few mins seems to do the trick. Or holding power for a really, really long time. Today it didn't turn on until I held "option" and pressed power. Then I finally got a response, and my MacBook started up again.
And every single time I get the same message: "The computer was restarted after Mac OS X quit unexpectedly." I click "report" for more information and nothing ever pops up. Pity.
My guess is that when I try to shut down my MacBook, it occasionally doesn't shut down, for some reason. I'm guessing that the MacBook freezes up and goes into a deep-sleep mode or something... even though the screen turns black like it normally does after I shut down my MacBook. So then I walk away thinking my MacBook is shut down when in all reality it's semi-awake. It's irritating.
So that's mu dillema. My MacBook doesn't turn on... or perhaps it just never turns off. Because if it was fully off, there wouldn't be a problem turning it on. Haha.
Why is my MacBook doing this? Why can't it just shut down without a problem? What could be causing my MacBook to crash/freeze up at shut down like this?

Next time you shut down, wait until the computer is totally shut down -- i.e., make sure you don't hear your fan running, the screen is black and that the light is out on the front of the computer -- before you close the lid.
I had that exact thing happen once, and since I done the above, it's never happened since.

Macbook Fan Hack - force it on

hey guys,
just wondering if anyone knows a way to hack the macbook fans to manually turn them on. i just updated to 10.4.7 but the heat is still driving me nuts. and the fans don't seem to turn on as regularly as i would like.

What about a firmware update that enables the fans to come on sooner
Apple has made updates firmware or OS updates that seem to effect when fans come on. Its a tricky balancing act, turn the fans on earlier or faster and battery life suffers. Don't have them come on sooner and heat increases
What temp do the fans come on at? 80 C?
I think for my MB they start coming on in the mid to low 70s, and if the temps reach the mid 80s they ramp up full bore.

Loud MacBook fan

My MacBook fan is running at 6200 rpm, 75 degrees almost constantly. In a class yesterday someone asked me to move because my computer was distracting. Please advise!
Even running just one program (FireFox) the fan runs constantly.

hi first time to post here~
my questions goes: the fan of my black macbook has started to "go nuts" for the past few weeks and it never happened before! I checked the fan speed using smcfancontrol and it was always around 6000 (exhaust). at first i thought it got to be the fan control software which messed up my fan and made it run like crazy, but after the uninstallation the problem remained the same. So like some advices here I checked "Activity Monitor" when my fan went crazy again. i found out the latest-updated iTune 8.0 took almost 55% of my CPU-especially whenever I turned on the "Visualizer." as long as I stop using "Visualizer" my fan is back to normal and quiet like a sleeping baby. May I ask is this normal?? Should i take my 4-month-old macbook to apple store for check?

Macbook Fan Broken?

I think my Macbook fan is broken. It keeps getting hotter and all I keep hearing is the sounds of something loading (like the sound of a CD when it is being loaded in the CD ROM. I downloaded the Mac fan control program to see if that would help. The temperature was at 147 degrees fahrenheit. I put the base speed of the fan at 1800 RPM. The left fan turns on at 500 RPM and then quits after a second. The right fan is at -1 RPM. I set the lower threshold to 104 degrees fahrenheit and the upper threshold to 158 degrees fahrenheit. So far, I have not heard any, even minute, noises coming from the fans. And no air is coming out of the vents.

there is only one fan in a macbook and yeah it sounds broken...bring it to an apple store and check the price to get it fixed...
if you are handy you can change it yourself and check ifixit and ebay...if you are not...backup your data as the end of your laptop is really near...
