  • My macbook fell and since then a white screen with question mark appears

    hey guys!
i really need to know what to do, my macbook fell while it was on. it froze so i restarted it, but the white screen comes in with the apple begining sound and everything but the screen stays blank for about two minutes and then a folde with a question mark appears. i tried putting in the cd that came with it, samething happened but after a while the appe sign appears and the computer started off my installation disc, so i try re installing everything, but when i get to the screen that asks to select a destination, there is nothing available.
i realize that the best thing to do is to go to an apple store and then sort everything out, but i am in haiti where the nearest apple store is in miami, i really need your help and i'm desparate cuz i cannot do anything without my laptop... please send me your help as soon as possible.
    thanks in advance

Your hard disk has been damaged. At this point, it will need to be replaced with a new one. You'll need to call AppleCare and they'll have you mail it in for repairs. I'm not sure what the usual turnaround time for that is internationally, but in the United States it's about a week. I'd tack on a few extra days to get the laptop to and from Haiti.
Either way, your computer will need to be repaired and the data that was on your hard disk will be lost. (Unless you take the machine to a 3rd party repair shop that specializes in recovering data from damaged hard disks.)

  • MacBook fell, doesn't startup from DVD; hard drive remplacement necessary?

Hi, my son's MacBook fell and now it doesnt start up anymore, there's only a grey screen and a question mark.
Tried to startup from the 10.6 DVD, with C-key held down > no reaction, DVD is spit out.
Tried to startup from the 10.5 DVD (was originally bought with 10.5), and it reacts to that in that it asks for which language to use, but at the Select A Destination-window, the window stays blank: it can't find the hard drive it seems.
My brother in law says it will likely need a new hard drive. If so, what type to use and can I install it myself (once did so with a 10.3 iBook)?
From this computer I don't know the specifics (how many GB or RPM). Somebody else bought it.
    thanks in advance!

    >something tiny fell out as well. It went so fast, I'm not sure what it was, but I did see a tiny flat metal ring (4 mm or so)<
It's possible something associated w/ the hard drive/connector got broken when it fell. So search carefully for any other part that could have come out when you pulled the HD out, even if it's a tiny piece of broken plastic. Then could you put up a picture of that ring and what ever else you find? I'm pretty familiar w/ most parts in a MacBook and that part/s might be a clue to what got broken when it fell.
Also check the serial number and run it at:
    http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
The serial number is located on a sticker in the bottom of the battery well.
    >(once did so with a 10.3 iBook)< Holy buckets! That's impressive and way, way harder that what's involved in replacing the HD in a MacBook!
So based on that impressive statement I'm going to say:
Depending on what kind of external you have (Is it roughly the same general size as the MacBook HD? I.E. laptop HD size.). You could pull the HD out of the external and put the MacBooks internal HD in there ( Since they're probably both SATA) and see if it spins up when you have the external plugged in an start up the computer. If they're not both SATA you'll have to buy a USB dongle. I've gotten them for as cheap as $14.
If it spins up select it and try to boot from it. If it boots there then something broke as above.
If no spinup then HD probably toast. I've been able to get these running by tapping on one that wouldn't spin but if you try that be ready to clone it immediately. If you get it to spin up that way try not to move/disturb it, see if it mounts. If so clone it immediately. So you'll need to be ready w/ Data Rescue or Super Duper and have enough space available to clone it to something.

  • My macbook fell on the floor

My macbook fell on the floor and i turned on and it went black while active

Leave it powered off, and unplugged from the wall.  Take it to a Genius Bar.
Damage has been done, and this user-to-user forum cannot diagnose it.  Only an expert who is looking at the unit can.
    Good luck.

  • My macbook fell off the couch and now everything on the display is double and slightly transparent. Is there a fix for this other than getting it replaced?

My macbook fell off the couch and now everything on the display is double and slightly transparent. Is there a fix for this other than getting it replaced?

Only an Apple Store or an authorized Apple Service Provider can determine if a repair is economically justifiable. It may be as simple as a dislodged display cable.

  • Macbook fell, and it needs alignment.

    Hello,
My macbook fell on the same day i bought it. anyways, I was lucky enough that nothing really happened to the software of it nor the screen.
Anyhow, when ever I open it up, it "ticks" (makes a tick sound). So i go to the reseller where i bought it from and the guy says something about removing the plastic area surrounding the keyboard and touchpad and replacing it in order for the alignment to get the laptop in the "like new" mode.
    any ideas people?
(I live outside US and Canada, there are no official apple stores or anything like this..)

Go to Applications / Utilities and run System Information. In the left column click Power. What's the condition of the battery?
You can try to reset the SMC.

  • My MacBook fell and the screen lost all luminosity

Hi ! Sorry for my English, but it's not my native tongue.
Anyway, my MacBook was in his bag (a Muji stuff with paddings on both sides) and it fell from my desk. No problem for turning out the computer, everything seemed O.K., except the screen remained black. In fact, it's like there was a black veil in front of my computer desk : I can't see it and anything seems O.K. Is there anything I can do ?
    Thanks a lot
    napi

Hi ! I think you're right. I made a research on Internet and discovered some people withe same problem. In French, I have a problem of "rétroéclairage" and with my "nappe de connexion écran". Thanks a lot !

  • Macbook fell off bed while asleep, please help!

Hello- While I was sleeping, I knocked down my 09-10 macbook onto my hard wood floor. Now the jack for the charger is somewhat indented into the laptop, and now I have to angle the charger in a certain way for it to work. Please help!

I very much doubt there is anything you can do yourself to fix this.
You could take it in to an Apple store and have them look at it. If you are in North America the diagnosis is free, but you will have to pay for any required repairs.

  • My Macbook fell and now it's making a knocking sound and it won't start up.

It keeps freezing and nothing is popping up except my finder at the top and my background. HELP ME PLEASE

I don't live in America it's not that easy.
And, what does that have to do with the price of eggs? You need to have the machine repaired. Find an Apple retailer or licensed reseller. Unless, of course, you know how to fix it yourself.

  • MacBook hard disk failure - nothing retrievable

My MacBook fell off a guitar amp the weekend before last. It carried on working for the rest of the day without any problem, but after I shut it down, I was unable to boot it up again the following morning. It couldn't get beyond the grey screen and spinning wheel.
I took it to a Mac reseller/repairer who, after keeping it four days, reported that the hard disk was dead and because it was a mechanical failure, nothing was retrievable.
I've come home with a new hard disk fitted, but could really have done with retrieving some of my files from the old hard disk.
Does anyone know if this "nothing can be retrieved" diagnosis is correct?

You could put the bad drive in an external enclosure and then download Data Rescue II and see it it can find files to retrieve. If it can, then buy it for $95 (I think) and maybe you will retrieve everything you need. It worked for me on a drive that was otherwise un touchable.
The way I look at it is this; you will not be out a dime to try this procedure. The reason I say so, even though you have to buy an external enclosure, is that if you had already owned an external enclosure with a drive in it you would not have be in this predicament. You could have used it for an ongoing backup of your regular drive. So, if you were to buy one now, and also buy a good drive to put in it, you won't have this problem again. Otherwise you will likely experience it again some day as most people do experience a HD failure at some point,
Data Rescue II is free to try to see if it is going to work for you.

  • Dropped Macbook, need to figure out replacement part

I'll begin this by saying in hindsite I could have handled this a better way but it is what it is.
My white 2007 macbook fell off the bed (landed flat on the bottom on a thick rug) about a year ago and it worked fine until the battery died and I went to turn it on again. It would turn on but wouldn't go past the gray "loading" screen. Now it doesn't turn on at all. What do I need to replace? When it first happened I had a Mac IT guy (for a business, not for Apple) check it out and he said that all of the data was there I just needed to replace the OS (Snow Leopard?) However, now a year later it doesn't turn on at all. It's not the battery I don't think, the battery was only a few months old. I didn't take care of this at first because I didn't know anything about fixing things and erronously thought I would have to pay half a thousand to fix - now I know I can easily do most of it myself. I'm assuming it's the internal hard drive but I'm no expert. Thanks for your help.

No, it does not work with the plug in. I haven't tried it with the battery out though. This not turning on started a while ago though, not recently.
I'm looking for a cheap fix (DIY...), I could take it in for them to figure out what's wrong but the closest store is an hour away and my macbook is an hour away in another direction with a Mac-knowledgeable family memember. So, taking it in will only happen if it isn't obvious as to what is wrong with it.

  • Macbook pro gets stuck on the startup screen...

This question is a little odd as i am typing it off of my macbook pro right now, but my macbook fell of my bed and then it froze. I then resarted it and it just sat on the start up screen with an ideling circle under the apple logo along with a loading bar at first. I let it sit for about 25 minutes and then realized that it was going to work.  I then tried to restart it in safe mood and that didnt work and i dont have the disk so i cant boot from that but then i tried this...
Hold command S on start up and then type
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    and then
    chmod 775 /
    and then
    exit
After that it booted up and now i am using it as previously stated but my only probelm is turned it off to see if it would come back on no problem and it doesnt i had to go through the same commands over again to get it to work.  So any suggestions on how to get it back to normal?
    Thanks

  • Is the Aluminum MacBook worth the extra $$$ over the new White MacBook

    Hello,
This is going to be my first Mac purchase and am leaning towards the White MacBook over the Aluminum model but I've read a few postings on issues with the White MacBook display...
    Thanks

Having a polycarbonate body, the white may look more fragile than the one piece aluminum but fragile is not a word I'd use to describe it. In the past year I've seen a MacBook that's fallen from a moving motorcycle - the case scuffed up but not broken and diagnostics showed the computer unharmed. Another owner brought in her MacBook that had been run over by a car - the top case cracked but the LCD unbroken and the computer passed diagnostics. I watched a student drop his MacBook as he carried it under his arm, it came to rest opened on the floor and I was certain the top had come loose but no. It was fine. And my own MacBook fell from the desk to a wooden floor and survived unscathed. Obviously others can recount examples where their MacBook was damaged by a fall but these examples indicate that the MacBook might be breakable but it isn't fragile. Not like the Dell notebook I saw fall from a desk this spring and shatter.

  • Sometimes volume keys or spaces don't work

    Hi all,
A couple of months ago my macbook fell to the floor (something like 30-40cm fall). It didn't broke but the unibody frame got a bit dented by the zone it hit the floor (one of the battery corners).
From then on, I have noticed that, from time to time, when I boot the laptop, it sometimes:
    a) boots slower.
    b) volume keys stop working and I cannot access to the volume options via system preferences (I can open the system preferences window but when I select the volume pannel, it gets stuck)
    c) Even if the ¿tap to click? option (first option in trackpad settings) is enabled, it doesn't work and I have to press the trackpad button.
    d) Spaces shortcuts won't work. Spaces works (I have several desktops and moving from program to program changes my desktop), but neither of my shorcuts work (alt+arrows)
    e) When I want to shut down the laptop and I push the power key it either doesn't show any shutdown dialog, or, if it shows it, I click shutdown and some programs close but some others (iCal, thunderbird, Firefox, and, eventually Finder) don't. I force exit them all, but, in the end, I'm stuck with a frozen Finder and I have to "hard-shutdown" (pressing the power button several seconds) the laptop.
It doesn't always happen, and not always with all the symptoms, but there are always a & e, and at least one from b,c,d. It began happening rarely, but during last week it happened 1/3rd of the time. My only workaround is to check if the volume keys work properly before I log in, in order to see if the system state is worth logging.
Any idea of what can I do?
    Thanks in advance,
    Txema

    Try a SMC reset.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
You might also try A pram reset:
Power off the MBP Then power back up holding the following keys: option, command,P,R (no commas) continue to hold these keys till you hear the start chime 2 times then release.
    Reboot.
    Hope this helps
