My macbook froze and won't reboot

I was using the RGB cable with the VGA adaptor to show a movie and my macbook froze in the process. I had to hold the power button down to get it to turn off, but when I pressed it again to reboot, all I my macbook does is that sound it does when it's trying to spit out a cd or dvd. I tried rebooting 5 times, and I still get the same result. My macbook has been acting up lately, where it freezes and tells me to hold down the power button, but this time it simply froze and I can't get a reboot.
In the prior week I used the Disk Utility to repair the disk, but that didnt seem to help, even after repairing it like 5 times.
Is there any hope to restore my macbook? Please help.

When the system tells you to restart with the power button that is a kernel panic.
Kernel panics are general caused by hardware problems, most frequently problems with RAM.
My suggestion is to boot from the install DVD and run AHT.
Report back any error you get.

  • MacBook froze and won't start up again, Help!

I was starting Adobe Photoshop when my MacBook froze completely. I turned it off by pressing the power button. I restarted it and the apple showed up with the spinning sign under, it stayed like this for about 5 minutes, then it started normally. When I started Photoshop again, it froze again. Then I tried to restart the computer, the apple came on with the spinning sign and after about 10 minutes, a black screen came up with a message that said something like disk2 something (UNDEFINED) and that was it. What can I do?

Try booting up from the Mac OS X install disk and try repairing the disk.

  • MacBook froze and won't turn on again

About an hour ago my MacBook all of the sudden froze, which it has never (14 months old) done before, and I can't do anything to get it started again. I had watched a DVD before and was working on Word after that. I noticed that the Mac twice had trouble saving a document and seemed to be about to freeze, but didn't. The third time it did so. Now, once I push the Start button, the screens turns grey, and a repeating clicking sound from somewhere around the DVD-Drive can be heard, which continues until I hit the start button again and turn the Mac off. If I don't do so, so ventilation sets in after roughly two minutes. Nothing else happens. I have tried all key combinations for all different kinds of resets suggested by Mac-support, all of which seem to work (according to sounds the Mac is supposed to make and does make), but did not change anything. I also took out the battery, no result. Thanks very much for any kind of suggestion

Hi kevven, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Just to expand a bit on Sig's great advice...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • My MacBook froze and won't turn on now.

I was watching Netflix and first the screen froze but the sound was still working. I thought it was Netflix having issues so I hit escape and nothing worked. I closed my MacBook so the sound would stop and it did. But then I opened it up 5 seconds later and the screen is black and is acting like its turned off. I tried to turn it on but nothing is happening. Not even the apple on the back lights up. The fan was loud too when it shut off. The fan is still on and it is loud.  What happened? I bought it not even a week ago.

Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again.
If this does not work, see if you can connect in recovery mode, explained in this aricle:
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
If it still does not work, this is a hardware issue and the phone has to be serviced by Apple or an Authorized Apple Service Provider:

  • In order to sell my macbook air I cleaned and reauthorized everything.  In rebooting to reset the original OSX (Mountain lion), it is not recognizing the wireless network and won't reboot.  Yosemite was installed prior to cleaning the machine.

I cleaned and reauthorized my macbook air for resale.  But I had upgraded to Yosemite before deciding to sell. (I bought a new machine).  When I went to reboot it it asked for my authorization, and in order to bypass this I reset the internet connection.  Now it won't recognize the wireless internet (I tried resetting the internet and even tried signing on as guest---?! was the symbol that produced).  I did notice that when I upgraded my system, it recognized my computer as a macbook pro, not a macbook air.  I also have a pro and wonder if the wrong operating system was installed in my macbook air and that's why it's giving me grief.  I need to sell this computer and need to be able to reboot it to show.  HELP!

You should follow these guidelines when preparing a Mac for sale:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/how-to-prepare-your-mac-for-sale/
In your situation, try this:  Boot the MBA with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys down.
The result should be a display of a revolving globe.
By following the instructions, you will be connected to the Apple servers.
Erase the SSD and you will be able to install the original OSX, Lion.
When completed, that should allow you to sell the unit.
Note:  you will need a solid Internet connection.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Air froze and won't start up again

My MacBook Air has been working perfectly until today I tried to open a movie in VCL and when I double clicked to go full screen, it all froze. There was a colourful circle where my mouse was meant to be and nothing would work. So I waited and then tried the force quit options and that didn't work. I then accidentally closed the lid on the laptop and when I reopened it, the screen was blank and the big apple on the too was not lit up anymore. I plugged in my charger but it had 60% battery when this happened, and the orange light was on. I tried the start up options but nothing is working. Please help thank you.

I had this happen to my MacBook Air and it died after two months off of extended warranty. The mother board had failed and needed a new one. I subsequently sold it for parts

  • Installing OS X Lion Update 10.7.3 (Client Combo) and it froze, now won't reboot - Help anyone?

The software update needed about 30 minutes to download and did so with no problems.  While initializing and "moving things into place" everything froze and I had no choice but to hold down the power button and try to reboot.
Now, the OS will NOT reboot, I can however, choose to use the Command-R keys and restore from TimeMachine or try to Repair from the DiskUtility. I wanted to find out if there was another way before going to these options, any suggestions?
    Thanks...

    Hi bernphys39,
With some patience and a lot of thought, I was able to reboot my computer without any glitches. Here's how I did it,
If you are using Lion there's a recovery mode: while restarting your computer hold down Command-R key which will bring up several options, re-install, restore via TimeMachine, disk utility etc. and an option to connect via Wi-Fi if needed.
These are great options, however, I didn't want to use any of those options (didn't want to erase my drive, didn't want to re-install etc. etc.). I decided to use the Safe-Boot option, in addition to a bunch of other tricks.
    1. I powered down the computer
    2. Removed the battery and let everything cool down
    3. Put the battery back in place
    4. Removed all peripheral devices, USB cables etc. except the power cable
    5. Pressed the Power Button and held the Shift key down - this is "Safe Mode"
    6. Once the computer booted in Safe Mode, I used Disk Utility and Verified my Disk which ran  a diagnostics test to make sure everything was running smoothly. The test should tell you if everything is ok, if not click Repair disk.
    7. Since all was good, I did one last double check on applications that start up on login
    8. I then powered down by turning the computer off - Shut Down
    9. Waited about 5 minutes and powered up again.
    10. Everything's working fine and making sure TimeMachine is on schedule for another backup.
Advice: Wait before you download the Client Combo! And read exactly what it does, if you feel it doesn't apply to your computer don't download it and wait. (For example, if you are using only Mac apps - no Microsoft apps, then don't download an update that fixes a glitch in Microsoft Word).
Hope this helps anyone who had the same problem as me :)

  • Blue screen appears after macbook froze and restarting

yesterday my macbook froze after trying to copy some files onto my hd. so i restarted it and switched back on only to find that the apple logo screen stays there forever and the system won't load. so i tried the apple support article number 306857 and used option c without success. i cant use option a because i dont have another mac and option b i cant use because my cd drive is broken atm. so if someone would be kind enough to show me exactly how to setup the commands so i could do it correctly, becuase i really don't understand how to type out the commands.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1545 shows these steps.
Start up in single-user mode by *holding Command-S after restarting the computer*. Note that single-user mode always uses the US English keyboard layout.
*Type these commands, each on a single line followed by Return:*
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    rm -rf /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/ApplicationEnhancer.bundle
    reboot

  • Sticks and won't reboot

Last night my ibook froze and I rebooted it with the circular button. Now it won't reboot. it stays on the blue gray screen and it sounds like something is stuck inside, almost like it needs a good wack to get past it. the keyboard lights up and I can get it into transfer mode if I hold down t. How can I get it to completely start?

Hi unsinkable and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
Now it won't reboot. it stays on the blue gray screen and it sounds like something is stuck inside, almost like it needs a good wack to get past it.
So that noise you're hearing is a rhythmic clicking? That would be the classic sound of a hard drive that had a head crash or "read error". Hopefully you've backed up? If not repair is a new hard drive and a data retrieval service is the only recourse to getting your data back. They're a lot cheaper these days some have flat rates.
There is a possibility that the drive will come back to life briefly and sometimes a good whack will bring it to life also ( or really kill it for good) The probability of either is minimal.
the keyboard lights up and I can get it into transfer mode if I hold down t.
Is the stuck sound still there when you do this?

  • Ipod Classic Froze and won't Restore (Error 1429)

    K, heres the story:
Me and my sister, who share the same computer, both have Ipod Classics Model No. A1238 and EMC. No. 2173. I downloaded a new version of itunes a couple days ago, and when my Ipod froze, so i plugged it into the computer to get it working again. The screen on my Ipod the went to a black and white "do not disconnect" sign, which is the same one that comes up on the really old Ipods. Then itunes said it detects a "corrupt Ipod" that needs to be retored. Reluctantly, i clicked restore, because I need my Ipod to work, its my life, since im in high school:). Then it said: Ipod "Ipod" cannot be restored, unknown error (1429).
I have tried many things to fix this, but none work. My Ipod seems to be permanently frozen, and once in a while it comes up saying "IPod needs to be restored" on the Ipod screen.
Also, the exact same things happened to my sisters Ipod today too.
any help would be great, i really need it fixed.
    thanks.

I was sort of relieved to read that I am not the only one with freezing issues.
I have been to the apple store twice only to be told there is nothing wrong and of course my warranty has expired !! I have the Model A1136 EMC No. 2065 80gig classic ipod. My dell computer is only 2 weeks old and works fantastic, however, when I open itunes and my ipod and it freezes, so does my pc and I have to do a task manager to get out of itunes and there are times when I can't and have to reboot my pc.
Well it has been two weeks now of me trying all that I can to fix the issue and only thing I can see so far that it freezes up when its in the analyzing the gapless sound upon adding music from my folders, etc etc. So I tried to "uncheck" everything that had to do with the sound and it worked. Oh and by the way, try setting your ipod on disk mode when you are trying to restore the ipod. It works better that way. Don't know what is going on but I am so angry with myself for being so attached to this ipod There is nothing out there that compares to my ipod and it's amazing the prices of mp3 that even come close to 80 gigs.
Good luck to all and if I find anything else to share, I certainly will Don't hesitate to email me if someone finds out or has a patch or something to get this thing going properly again bye for now ,,,,,,,,

  • [SOLVED] System froze and won't boot.

When I pluged in my power adapter on my laptop my entire system froze and forced me to cut the power.
Now when I try to boot it I get several errors about mounting and udev and more which I can't catch in the speed. Then it enters a long loop of printing
systemd[1]: Failed to start Journal Service.
    And finally prints:
systemd[1]: Failed to start Journal Service.
systemd[1]: Failed to start Emergency Shell.
systemd[1]: Dependency failed for Emergency Mode.
Now only thing I can do is reboot, with the same result. I have no clue what to do so now I reach out for help here.
    Thanks in advance.

    Indeed this was the cause.
Anyway I've manage to solve it, here is the steps:
    1) Boot a live cd
    2) Set up and enter a chroot according to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=154625
    3) Disable [testing] from /etc/pacman.conf
    4) Run:
    pacman -Syyf util-linux
    pacman -Syyf linux linux-headers
I got som wierd errors at first which was gone after reinstalled util-linux.
And to get rid of the cause:
    pacman -R laptop-mode-tools
    5) Although this did not really work out so I did:
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    6) Exit chroot and reboot.
Maybe not all of those cammands are needed but that's how I solved my problem(s).
