My MacBook gets tweaky when I use the iMac as a display... suggestions?

When hooking up my MacBook Pro to my iMac (to use the iMac as a display, via Thunderbolt) it causes my MacBook to be tweaky, slow, taking too long to think, and then keeps Photoshop all the way to the right when I disconnect the iMac... any suggestions? I love using the big screen as a monitor, but need the luxury of the lap top for work (we travel a lot, and I cannot exactly tote around a giant 27' iMac...). I use Photoshop CS5 and I'm usually running it at the same time as Mail and Google Plus, but that's usually it. I have my Time Machine hooked up to back me up in case anything happens, of course, but I want the speed of the laptop even if it's hooked up to the iMac!
Thank you!

Can the iMac work as a display the same as the Apple display?
Only if it's a 27-inch model. Other Macs require a VNC setup or ScreenRecycler, which will be much slower.

  • When connecting Macbook Air to iMac, have to keep Macbook Air open in order to use the iMac as a display.

When I connect my Macbook Air to my iMac with Thunderbolt, I have to keep my Macbook Air open or else the iMac does not sense it. I've tried closing it to just use the iMac as the display, but then the iMac goes back to its regular screen. Also, I have to control everything from the MBA keyboard and touchpad- my iMac mouse and keyboard suddenly won't work. How do I fix this?

I get artifacts when I lighten (dark specks) or darken (white specks) when I use the adjustment brush to adjust exposure on my photos.   Any ideas why this is happening?  It would seem to be a big enough bug to get noticed and promptly fixed, unless I am doing something wrong.

  • Using the iMac as a Display

I have a PS2 and I was wondering if there was any way to use my iMac as a display to play it on. I saw some things used for video editing in the Apple Store but the Geniuses said that either I couldn't use them like that or the framerate would make it unplayable.
Does anyone know of/have any ways to do this?

Hi. Supposedly you can use this product from Elgato (The EZ): http://elgato.com/index.php?file=products_eyetvez
Note that their more expensive products will not work because they are encoders, delaying the video.
Supposedly the EZ product will work for this purpose, for there is virtually no delay, with what you see on screen.

  • I have a Thunderbolt iMac 27" with a Thunderbolt Display attached.  I would like to use the iMac and Thunderbolt display in Target Display Mode for my new Thunderbolt MacBook Pro.  So far, it seems I can only use the iMac screen itself.  How do I do this?

When I press the Command + F2, the iMac screen becomes a secondary for the MacBook Pro, and the Thunderbolt Display becomes the primary screen for the iMac.  I was hoping that both screens would become secondaries for the MacBook Pro.  Does anyone know how I should proceed?  I have tried to connect the Thunderbolt display directly to the MacBook Pro, and the iMac to the Thunderbolt Display via the separate Thunderbolt cable, but there was no difference.  And since the MacBook Pro only has the one Thunderbolt port, I'm not sure how to proceed.

Yes, eww, the language definitely states two thunderbolt displays, but I can understand the confusion and was siding with how they could make the mistake to think it would work like they want it to. My appologies for not being clear on that point, but I think you make it clear that the language in the ad says nothing about an imac.
Having said that all the language about TB would suggest that this would be possible. http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/
    High performance on display.
Thunderbolt I/O technology provides native support for the Apple Thunderbolt Display and Mini DisplayPort displays. It also supports DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, and VGA displays through the use of existing adapters. So you can connect your Apple LED Cinema Display or other display, along with multiple high-speed devices, all from a single port.

I happened to see your question on linuxquestions, and they're probably right about gcc 4.3 being the problem. You should mail the author (off the app in question) and tell him to update the "include statements" to comply with gcc 4.3

  • Using the iMac 27 screen with my macbook

    Hi there,
My wife has a Macbook Air and I've just ordered a 27" iMac (Dec 2012 model). Is it possible for her to plug her Macbook Air into the iMac via thunderbolt and use the larger display for the Macbook Air (much like you would with a thunderbolt display)?
Thanks for any help you can give

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    It depends. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
You have ordered a Late 2012 iMac, that has got Thunderbolt ports. If your wife has got a Mid 2011 or newer MacBook Air, you can use your iMac as an external display for the MacBook Air, because the MacBook Air has got a Thunderbolt port. However, if it's an older MacBook Air, you won't be able to use it because you can't connect a MacBook Air with Mini DisplayPort into another Mac with Thunderbolt to be used as a display.
If your wife has got a MacBook Air with a Thunderbolt port, just buy a Thunderbolt cable like this one and follow the steps of my link above to set up your iMac as a display.
If the MacBook Air has got Mini DisplayPort, you can still use the iMac as a display if you install a VNC client as ScreenRecycler on both computers. This application uses your network to use your iMac as a display for the MacBook Air and it works great, but it completely depends of the network

  • Can I use my iMac as a 'display' for my MacBook Pro?

Hi all, I am really hoping someone can help me here.
I am wondering if I can use my 24" iMac as a display for my MacBook Pro (both running Snow Leopard).
It's my father's 80th birthday party in about 24 hours time. I am doing up the music and slideshow (thanks Apple - so easy!).
My plan was to simply take my iMac and use it. However, I managed to drop the wireless keyboard (darn those dogs) and now my keyboard won't work. I have no backup keyboards here (gave the wired one to Dad to use with his Mac mini). I live in a country area with no access to a Mac store and it will take more than 24 hours to get a new one. Went to my local 'other computer' general store last night: I really don't want to buy an ugly black keyboard..... I have just had a great idea:
Can I network my MacBook Pro and use it as the source for the slide show and simply use the iMac as a display? I have plenty of DVI adaptors but am just not sure how I would go about the software side of things? Or should I simply buy an ugly PC keyboard (and if I do, will the WIndows button work as an Apple button???)
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
    Thanks!

The imac 24 can't be used as a monitor over a DVI connection or the like, Suzanne, but you may be able to achieve what you want to using "Screen Sharing" by networking the two computers. This lets your MBP effectively control what is running on the iMac.
See HERE for the basic setup. For information about how to access the "shareable" screen from the MBP see HERE.
One possible problem may be actually getting this set-up on the iMac if it is not already enabled, however, unless you can borrow a keyboard from someone (your password may have to be entered to enable it). You may be able to get around this, if necessary, using the "keyboard viewer" (which you can place in the menubar using System preferences > Keyboard, if you don't already have it there).
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Using '09 iMac as Target Display via Thunderbolt Cable Fail

I have a peculiar situation that I hoping someone can decipher with certainty:
    I have a late 2009 iMac core i7, 27" running 10.9.1
I just received a Mac Pro - my plan was to use the iMac as a display for the Mac Pro at least for a while. I purchased a thunderbolt cable. I have connected the mac pro via thunderbolt cable to the mini display port on the iMac.
Unfortunately I simply cannot get CMD-F2 to work, or FN-CMD-F2 on the iMac. I have tried PRAM resets etc. The system does nothing when I hit those keys. I verified the mac pro is working via HDMI.
I am now wondering if I have the right cable. I understood thunderbolt and mini display port to be interchangeable and backward compatible so that my situation would work.
What am I missing? Thanks much, really would like to get this mac pro on screen without buying a new monitor!

I found that MDP iMac MUST use a MDP cable. Which of course is not as easy to come by as the thunderbolt which I picked up. Really annoying.

  • Using 27" iMac as a Display for my 13" MBP

I've read a couple of posts on this forum, but am still unsure whether this is possible.
I have a 27" i7 iMac and a 13" MBP (2009) and I want to know if I can use the iMac as a display for my MBP. Is this possible, if so what do I need to acheive this (cables, software etc.) and how do you switch between the iMac and MBP on the same monitor. Also, has anyone had an experience with Henge Docks for the MBP ?
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can. This article explains how: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924
You will need a Mini DisplayPort cable.

  • Using an iMac as a display

Would it be possible to connect my MDD to an iMac, and then use the iMac as a display for both?

Not that I'm aware of. But, that said, you could mount your MDD tower on the network and use Apple Remote Desktop to display your MDD Desktop in a window on the iMac. I do this frequently around the house, and this means once you have the MDD setup with ARD (System Preferences/Sharing, click on Remote Desktop in left box listing sharing services in Tiger, or Remote Management in same box in Leopard), then set up Options to allow your iMac to access your MDD over the network.
This works perfectly, and the new iMacs are sufficiently powerful that responsiveness is good. If you're using Tiger, you'll need to purchase and install Apple's Remote Desktop software on the iMac to access the MDD's Desktop screen. If you're using Leopard, that's called Screen Sharing and you can access your MDD simply by opening a window on the iMac, going to the Shared area in the sidebar on the left side of the window, clicking on your shared MDD tower, then selecting Share Screen.
    Have fun...

    Hi,
    You have 2 solutions:
1 - You can use 2 differents icloud account
2 - You use the same account but you don't sync yours contacts.
You configure that in  Settings > icloud
You activate or desactivate what you want.
