My MacBook has reset by itself

Hi
Something that I can't explain to myself happened with my MacBook 10.4.11. Usually I do not turn it off while I am at home. Today I did and later when I started it again, everything inside was restored to factory settings. All applications and preferences. Folders are missing from my desktop, the bookmarks (safari) are not anymore there. I have found them in folder bookmarks somewhere in the comp. Playlists from I tunes and photos in I photo are missing there. They exist in data folders. Everything, absolutely everything is reset. And now its a big chaos here. Any ideas????

Hi
Did you rename your home folder by any chance? The one with the house icon. If you did follow these steps:

  • My four-year-old MacBook has started shutting itself down

My four year and one month old white Macbook, running Snow Leopard, has started shutting itself down - as in suddenly going from being on to being in a powered-down state - in the last two days.  In the last two days, it has shut itself down at least six times, I've lost count.  Before the last two days, it never shut itself down ever in four years that I can remember.  Five out of the six times it shut itself down, I was playing a PlayStation game via the PCSX emulator for OS X.  I had been playing this game on and off for about a week, give or take a day, before this started, without issue.
Yesterday, I started playing it, and the macbook shut itself down some time into it.  Thinking it was an overheating problem, I let it cool down for 15-20 minutes and tried again, and the macbook shut down again after maybe 10-15 minutes of use.  Again, I let the macbook cool down for 15-20 minutes, the results were the same.  I went through this again, this time ejecting the DVD that was in the drive and unplugging the power cord(to let the macbook run on battery, to see if that would make a difference), and it shut down again.  I then let the macbook cool down for probably 4 hours.  I then engaged in a two hour internet surfing session, in which the macbook did NOT shutdown.  I turned the computer off when I was finished, and a few hours later I tried the game again, and the macbook shut down again, after only 5-10(I think) minutes of use.
This morning, I tried again and there were was another shutdown.  After this, I tried another game(with another emulator), a 2D one as opposed to the 3D one I had been trying, and this went off without a hitch.  After that, I tried a different 3D game(in yet another emulator), and the macbook shut down again(and in this game I hadn't even started anything yet, I was just at the first menu screen were you select a save slot, that kind of thing).  After that, the computer was off for the rest of the day until the last two hours, during which I have been online, and there has been no shutdown as of yet.
I know this is a lot of detail, but I just wanted to illustrate the possible correlation between certain games and the shutdowns, even though I emphasize that I have played all of these games before without issue.  Additionally, I watched a full two and a half hour movie via DVD on my macbook either the night before or two nights before the shutdowns started(having trouble remembering) without any issue.  If it's an overheating issue, it just seems strange to me that it would get through a two and a half hour DVD without shutting down, but a game with 3D graphics - and this is mid-90s polygon early 3D graphics, not 2011 movie-like 3D graphics - would suddenly start making it shut down.
Anyway, I'm very concerned, and looking for any advice any of you can give.  Any assistance is appreciated.

I had two more shutdowns occur.  The first was while playing the same game that cause most of the previous shutdowns.  I had Activity Monitor open, and the CPU % was way over 100.  The second was while playing a 2D game, marking the first shutdown during a 2D game.  The CPU % wasn't as hight as the first time, but still up to around 75-85 or 90%.  I didn't notice the fans ramp up, but I may not have been listening hard enough.

  • My MacBook Pro just turned itself off while installing Windows 7. It has now got a black screen with a white flashing bar in the top left corner...what can I do?

I was just installing windows 7 onto my MacBook Pro. I selected to have 200GB for Windows and the rest leave for Mac.
I clicked install and the bar filled up as it should do. However, once the install had completed, my MacBook turned itself off. I assumed this was normal. Now, my MacBook has a black screen with a white flashing underscore in the top left corner.
What is wrong and what should I do?

Hold down the Option key when starting up then on the sceen that comes up select Mac OS X to boot from.
The Win 7 install didn't go well and is hung in some way. You should use boot camp assistant to remove the win partition and start over.
Make sure you are using a Retail version of Win 7. A Branded OEM version, like ones from Dell and HP, will NOT work to install Windows 7 on your Mac.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Since you don't have a backup, my first suggestion is to get an external Firewire hard drive and Prosoft Data Rescue.
It may be able to recover the information.
If you think you might have moved the User folder, or one of its subfolders by mistake, or named it something different, there is this article which can help:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107854
Though if your Applications are gone, I'm not sure that it will. Still take a look and see if that's what your issue is.

  • My MacBook turns on by itself as soon as I attach the AC adaptor

    Hi guys!
My black MacBook has developed a strange self consciousness...
Each time I attach the AC cord, and even with lid still closed (!!!), it turns on by itself, then a black screen with something like "non system disk, replace and hit a key" appears; if I turn it off and then reboot hitting "alt" key and choosing Mac HD (the only choice that is shown, as the CD is emty), then everything goes fine...
    Very very strange... Any suggestion???
    Thanks and Ciao!
    Sergio

    Hi Bmer,
tried to reset the SMC, the first time I connected the MacBook to the AC adapter this morning everything went fine; but then again tonight it happened... Tha Mac turns on by itself with lid closed as soon as I connect it to the AC adapter, I open it while it boots (no more black screen with "non system disk", just a normal login) and I also find the screen brightness to its full level, even if I usually keep it at its minimum...
I will try to investigate deeper and report any other hints...
Ciao for now and thanks again

  • MacBook Pro reset clock with lost idisk data files

    Hi,
I opened my MacBook pro this morning but it had reset the clock back to Jan 01, 2001 and had also lost all wireless passwords. This I have manually updated again which is fine but my iDisk on mobile me has reset itself to November 2010 meaning I have lost all files from then. As this is my primary method of storing my data as I work across multiple computers I am now stuck. Is there any way of recovering this data?

Is the information on your computer at all or on an external drive of some sort? The only group that really would be able to assist you with that is going to:
    www.apple.com/support/mobile
It is chat based support but unfortunately it's the only support apple has for mobile me as of right now, I am not sure if they keep backups of your backups. Sorry to hear about that, that's weird how it changed your date... did that happen after a softare update or something?

  • Macbook Pro Keeps Restarting Itself and then totally crashed

    Dear all.
    I am using Macbook Pro 13-inch (i7 2.9 Ghz, 8 GB DDR3, 750 GB) with OS X Maverick (10.9.4).
For the last few months, my Macbook Pro kept restarting itself and I usually ignored this issue until yesterday, my MBP fail to boot up, only display the grey apple logo and rolling icon below for almost 30 mins.
I tried the safe mode and reset NVRAM method and it still fail to boot up and sometimes a black text appears (aka kernel panic).
Then i took my macbook pro to the nearest Apple service provider and the technician said that it was probably due to the 750 GB Hard Disk since the HD itself is a faulty product, therefore we can't find any 750 GB HD nowadays. So he recommended me to replace my current HD with a new HD. I took his advice and I replaced it with 1 TB Toshiba HD. And then the technician reformat my MBP and installed the OS X Maverick. My Macbook pro able to boot up now.
However the next day I still find my MBP keeps restarting itself (until now) and take note that I didn't install any new softwares, I only updated the available  updates in Apps Store for the OS, iBooks, and iTunes.
Can anyone recommend me what to do? Is this a Hardware problem or software problem?
I'm thinking to switch back to OS Lion to see whether this is mainly due to OS Maverick.
    Thank you.

Unfortunately yes.   Since the computer is unable to boot up, that part of the software starts BEFORE the OS would.  Last time I had this problem, it turned out to be a faulty GPU (soldered to the logic board) and i needed to replace the logic board.    If you wanted to, you could indeed back up your personal data (you should ANYWAY, no matter what you do)  and you could try to do a fresh install,  but I'm fairly confident you are experiencing either faulty ram, or a faulty logic board.

Cannot move any files into trash to delete them. I get a Trash warning box saying "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'file name' could not be read or written.(Error code - 36)".Macbook has so much data it is almost not working.
I have tried reseting to factory settings by removing battery and holding down the power switch for more than 5 sec but this does nothing.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I think with so much unwanted data on the desktop and other places the whole os will crash very soon.
    Thanks, Rick

The hard drive may be dying anyway, or the directory damaged because it is so full.  You should never let the hard drive get over 85% full.
    A -36 error is a read/write error.
All you did with the power is reset the SMC.  Does nothing to reset everything to factory settings.
Do you have your original 10.4 installer discs for the MacBook?
    Is your data backed up?

  • The screen on my macbook has malfunction. When I change the brightness to zero and return to the first level of brightness it works briefly but then the screen starts to flicker brightness and quickly extinguished.

The screen on my macbook has malfunction. When I change the brightness to zero and return to the first level of brightness it works briefly but then the screen starts to flicker brightness and quickly extinguished. It seems to be a bad contact, it would not be normal for a quality product that should have, he has less than two years of use. Not because of the bad use or crash. Someone with the same problem or can help me? It's really a contact problem? I've done all the procedures recommended by the online support. Thanks.

    Hey everyone in Apple world!
I figured out how to fix the flashing yellow screen problem that I've been having on my MBP!  Yessssss!!!
I found this super handy website with the golden answer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
I followed the instructions on this page and here's what I did:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
I went through the 6 steps above twice, just to make sure I got rid of whatever stuff was holding up my bootup process.  Since I did that, my MBP boots up just like normal.  No flashing yellow screen anymore!!
(Note that I arrived at this solution when I first saw this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US)
Let me know if this works for you!

  • My macbook has recently started getting really hot after using it for a brief time, is there something wrong

    Hi
My macbook has started getting really hot after using it for only maybe 10 minutes or so, it can go up to 73 degrees quite quickly, I am only surfing the net etc but have a few pages open at the same time.
Also should I switch it off after I finish using it or is it ok to leave it in sleep mode for long periods of time......
it is about 1 year old
    thanks

    First try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If there is no change, install istat menus:
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and %CPU to display values from high to low.
Look for a process that consumes a large % of CPU.
You may post images of both for inspection.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook powers on by itself when i connect the power cable

    Hi,
Since Leopard, my Macbook has decided to no longer rely on the stupid user pushing the power button. It simply switches itself on every time i connect the power cable
You know: I often come home in the evenings with a drained battery, connect the cable and charge the battery overnight. I don't want to switch the baby on. But my Macbook thinks otherwise.
First i thought it maybe have somthing to do with the hardware-energy settings (power on after power loss), but the option is disabled.
So what? Has the Macbook become more intelligent or am I just to stupid to find the right option? (Care what you say..!)
    Cheers,
    Fox

    Hello World!

  • Macbook shutting down by itself, and very hot when being used

    Hello!
My 2009 Macbook has me worried. When I put it in sleep mode and plug it in, it shuts down by itself at some point, so every time I go to use it again, I have to turn it on as though I had initially shut it down. Also, the bottom of my laptop is very hot.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? I am so grateful for your input!
I am just outside of my Apple Care warranty coverage, unfortunately.

  • Why my iPhone 4S keep reseting by itself after iOS 7 update?

    Hello:
This s not funny at all.  After I updated to IOS 7.0.3 couple weeks ago, there s several times my phone is reseting by itself.
When I try to turned ON again, s telling me the battery s dead and need to connect it to the power source.
After connected, is coming back again to the live and telling me the right charge of battery I had before.
Battery it was never empty or close to be. Always is around 50 % of capacity.
This happens on the middle of a call, texting or mailing.
Tell me what I could do to stop this mess up,
    Please.

    janirch wrote:
I tried everything. I restarted it, I putted it on factory settings, I deleted every App but nothing helped.
In Apple Store, they told me that it is a hardware problem and my phone isn't able to use the new iOS 7.1 because my phone is too old but it's only 2,5 years old.
I suspect that something in that conversation was seriously misunderstood.  The iPhone 4S runs iOS 7 without any issues.
If the device has a hardware issue, then it does not matter what version of iOS is on the device, it will not function properly.

  • MacBook Turns off by itself

My MacBook has been shutting off automatically, it also shuts down my safari. This happens when my laptop goes to sleep. It will not shut down if there's 2 or more tabs open on safari because there's a popup that doesn't allow it to shut down. The popup asks if I'm sure that I want to close Safari. I am aware that the only reason that it doesn't shut when Safari has 2 or more tabs is because of the popup. I am unsure why it is automatically shutting though.
Anyway help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You.

I have been having a similar problem. My battery shows that its full capacity is 4336 mAh and under 190 cycles. I have the latest firmware update. After disconnecting the power adapter, my computer has been shutting down without warning and while showing a battery charge above 3800 mAh. I followed the directions to reset the SMC, and now my problem seems to be fixed, but I do not believe this was the true cause of my problem.
When I removed the battery, which was still showing five green lights, I noticed that one of the screws that holds the casing that gives access to the RAM and hard drive bay was loose. (I had to replace my hard drive 1 year and 1 month after I purchased my MacBook because the stupid hard drive just failed on me one day. Needless to say, I'm less than happy with this purchase compared to my old Powerbook G4.) I tightened that screw, and then completed the process to reset the SMC.
I also have read a couple other threads that suggest the problem can be a bad connection between the battery and the computer. I think this was the source of my problem.
So, while the SMC fix is often suggested, I am relatively sure my real problem had to do with the battery not making a good connection with the computer. Try checking this out, especially if the software resets and upgrades and everything don't work, and you believe your battery still is holding a proper charge.
    Good luck.
