My Macbook is becoming slow after 3 years. (Advice Needed)

Hi Guys,
I have had my Macbook Pro for around 3 years now.... It's starting to become slow.... I use alot of RAM gobbling apps like Photoshop, Flash, Logic X etc etc. I'm a student and I cannot afford to buy a new Mac right now so I have been looking into upgrading my system.
I have thoroughly cleaned out my mac and followed all guides on how to speed up my mac online etc etc. It helps for half an hour or so but once I'm using multiple apps like the ones mentioned above it begins to die so to speak.
I have looked online and have come to the conclusion that It may be best financially for me to invest in some new RAM and maybe an SSD drive?
Would you recommed this? rather than paying out £1000 for a new laptop (which I simply cannot afford)....
RAM - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0070C2ND8/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&col id=1IU0LK5EQNXPM&coliid=IV98M7PZWAEN6&psc=1
(Possible) SSD - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-500GB-2-5-inch-Basic-Solid/dp/B00E3915Y4/ref=sr_ 1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1398171607&sr=1-1&keywords=macbook+pro+ssd+drive
Would it be worth getting both or would the RAM be okay alone? Also any idea's how many more years this would give my Macbook? I'm hoping it will prolong it's life by atleast another 3 years running at a good performance....
also when I upgrade would it be worthwhile to back up my system and re-install the OS? Start back from scratch so to speak?
If you have any other suggestions I'm totally open to them and look forward to reading replies.
Thanks in advance, Josh.

By the way, ANY SSD drive will work on your MacBook Pro. If you do specific searches for "macbook pro ssd drive" most likely you'll get all the expensive price tags.
I currently use SanDisk Extreme SSDs and Mushkin Deluxe SSDs both are usually more economical to other brands and they both perform amazing...
The standard HDD on your mac usually goes at around 70MB/s (read/write) both of these SSDs go around 470/ 270MB/s (read/write).
So the SSD upgrade will give you a pretty good speed improvement...

Spotlight may be indexing your drive(s).  Click the Spotlight icon at the right of your menubar; if it shows things being indexed, that's at least some of the reason.

I am having difficulty charging my iphone with the cable. Its been 1 yr since I bought the phone. Does the cable becomes useleless after a year. Whats the life span for the cable? It automatically gets disconnected and then get connected again.

That is shorter than normal. Any signs of wear? And you're sure it's the cable, not one of the pins in the iPhone's charging port?

  • Satellite A100 - Internet becomes slower after 10 minutes

    Hi,
the Satellite A100 worked fine for some years, suddenly the internet became too slow after 10 min from start.
When the laptop is switched on the first time the internet works fine the first 10 min then becomes slower and slower till almost no packets are received but the connection does not drop completely.
Suspected spyware, rootkit, did a clean up, then installed from the disk recovery
Then tried the same. Uninstalled the LAN connection then reinstalled from the device manager, nothing.
I suspected the Ethernet port is failing. Then I used a D-Link usb-to-Ethernet adapter which is completely independent from the onboard Ethernet hardware. Nothing, same behaviour, works fine first then Firefox shows a time out
The modem, cable, internet are all fine since i tested them with one PC and another Fujitsu laptop (5 years old) and they all work fine. Even the D-Link works fine.
The Toshiba pc diagnostic tool says specifically "Network Fail", but what fails exactly?
    Any idea or similar experience?

    Hi Keany,
oh yes, quite complicated cause i tried many things. unluckily i don't have a WLAN, and i don't want to hack the neighbors' just for the test.
i am thinking even if the RJ port is defect, than the usb2ethernet from d-link should work fine as it's not dependent on the LAN Ethernet port at all. the relationship is a mystery ..
the DSL/Modem work fine with two other computers.
also tried with ubunto live CD, connection is there but networking almost dead
the d-link usb2erthernet looked ok with another fujitsu-siemens laptop.
i might order a pcmcia network card and try if it works.
thanks for thinking with me ..

  • My macbook is running slow after upgrading to yosemite

Other's have posted similar experiences by when I ran etrecheck I didn't get a bunch of fails and yet my computer is extremely sluggish since moving from snow leopard to Yosemite.  So much so, that I'm considering going back.  Programs load slowly and switching between programs has a delayed response. Reminds me of the PC I had before I bought my macbook in 2008.
Any ideas on what might be causing the slow down?

    Thanks a million!

    What about this?
Good brand and a little cheaper:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148604
Would it be worth the $80 or should I just put it toward a used MBP?
    Thanks!

  • Why is my macbook pro running slow after os x yosemite upgrade

Why is my macbook pro running so slow after os x yosemite upgrade

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • Firefox becomes slower after long periods of browsing

Firefox runs great at first but gradually becomes less responsive over time. A temporary fix to this issue is simply restarting firefox (close FF then re-open FF), but this gets quite annoying. Firefox runs fast, then gradually I notice it become slower and slower until I restart the application. Then the process repeats.
Some issues I begin to see after 2 hours of browsing:
    1. slow response to scrolling. 0.5-1.5second delay after input, it scrolls.
    2. delayed typing. I type something in the search bar and it takes 0.5-1.5 seconds for the individual letters to show up on the search bar.
    3. Random lock ups
Reinstalling Firefox (including deleting my profile folder), clearing temporary and history files has no effect.
    I'm running 3.6.12 and I have the following add-ons:
    Ad Block Plus 1.3.1
    Download Statusbar 0.9.7.2
    Google Toolbar 7.1.20100830W
    Java Console 6.0.22
    McAfee SiteAdvisor 3.2
    Password Exporter 1.2.1

At this point I think you should get Applejack...

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...

Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Swing JTextField becomes slow after entering large unicode text.

    Hi All,
We are developing a Indian s/w in Java, where we are using Indic InputMethods for taking user input in Hindi.
Things works fine for small amount of text entered into a JTextField, but when we try to enter large amount of hindi text (let's say 100+ lines), it becomes slow bit by bit, ultimately giving impression of a application hang.
We are using linux OS (Mandrake 10.1) on intel boxes with 265 MB RAM.
    Can any one help?
    Thanks in advance.
    Sanjeev

Hmm .. I think I may be aware of that cutting edge application ;)
Kindly let me know the solution.

  • RAM Used up quickly, Macbook Pro Becomes Slow

Over the past week or so I've noticed my Macbook Pro getting increasingly slower as the day goes by. Looking in activity monitor, my free RAM is often under a couple hundred MBs - and too often below 50MB. Figuring that I just had to clear up some inactive RAM left over from other programs, I purged the inactive RAM, but only to have it get used up again within minutes.
This hasn't ever been a problem to me in the past year that I've had my Macbook Pro, but now it becomes unresponsive very quickly. As an experiment, I booted up my laptop, and even then I had less than a GB of free RAM (never had that little upon bootup before). The only programs I have setup to start on boot are iTunes Helper, Caffiene, and Mail (Hidden). This hasn't changed in at least six months, so I know it's not one of these causing the RAM hogging.
Here is a log of my current Activity Monitor stats- after rebooting about an hour ago, the only programs I've opened were Chrome, iTunes, and Firefox. Everything was fine for a few minutes, then I noticed severe slow down and massive RAM loss, in addition to the cooling fans exceeding 6000rpm for a short while. Does anything here look abnormal?
*I should also note that I've verified the startup disk and repaired permissions, and the Page in/Page Out ratio is fine.

Thomas - yes, the page outs are less than 10% of the page ins, your site was actually what made me take a look at that haha. The reason that I'm concerned about my free RAM is that it has never been this low, and I like having a certain amount of RAM free when I run certain programs (ex. Ableton Live, a music production program, where ~500MB of RAM is needed to load some drum samples).
I had just installed Sophos Anti-Virus a few hours before my post, so that's probably running at startup along with a few others, which I will have to take a look at. Are there any other startup processes that you noticed that I should look into?
Lastly, I installed Final Cut Pro 7 about a week and a half ago. I only open it maybe three days out of the week, so I didn't think that's what would be causing it. However, there may be some background processes that are running even when the actual program isn't running. Can you spot anything like that?
updating the Mac OS X version was the fix for it.
I eventually will udgrade to Mountain Lion, but I would like to get this fixed first. I'm also looking at buying more RAM, but up until recently, 4GB was working fine. I couldn't have everything running, but the programs that I did have open ran fine.
Simple stop leaving program open that you are done using. Make sure you close the Program and not just close the window that the program is using. By default most Mac programs do not close when you close the window they are using. You have to manual close, Quit, those programs.
That's the thing though- I always close programs that I am not using (cmd+q, not just closing the window). I come from a Windows background, so closing a program entirely became a quick habit of mine!

Well, for one thing, you need to get rid of this a it does more harm than good:
    [loaded]    com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2Helper.diskSpaceWatcher.plist [Click for support]
        [loaded]    com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2Helper.scheduledScan.plist [Click for support]
        [loaded]    com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2Helper.trashWatcher.plist [Click for support]
    as well as this adware:
    [running]    com.conduit.loader.agent.plist [Adware! - Remove]
You can use either the manual method or download the app to do it for you:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/arg/
Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support
If your system is still sluggish after ridding your computer of these unwanted things, then consider installing additional RAM - 4 GB is considered the absolute minimum to run Yosemite.

  • Macbook pro runs slow after sleep mode.

This issue has bothered me for a long time already.
And because of this, I have re-installed the OS many times.
But apparently, re-installing the OS does not help.
The machine will runs slow again after a certain period of time.
    So, here is my problem.
When you do the four finger down swipe, there will be a zooming out effect, right?
(The same function as pressing F3, which let you knows how many applications you have opened)
This zooming out effect is smooth when I first bought my Macbook Pro.
It is smooth too after I re-install the OS.
But now, after a period of time, this effect becomes so choppy and slow.
As I mentioned above, I tried re-installing the OS. It works, but only works for a few days.
And then it becomes choppy again.
The only solution is to reboot my machine.
Can anyone suggest me what to do?
I guess I have to re-install the OS again tonight... LOL

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk instead of re-installing.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.
